Opis:
Essential nutritional components are quantified in the study in addition to major antioxidants, carotenoids, phenols and flavonoids. Their antioxidant activities were also analyzed using DPPH, ABTS and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activities and by determining their iron reducing power. Results indicated that the highest quantity of nutritional and antioxidant components was obtained in red variety (4.63 mg/g ascorbic acid, 10.32 mg/g total carotenoid content, 61.50 mg/g total flavonoid content, 310.27 mg/g total phenolic content) followed by orange, yellow and green varieties. Similar trend was observed while analyzing their antioxidant activities by different methods. In studying correlation between components and antioxidant activity, a strong correlation was obtained for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total phenolic content (R2 = 0.722) and total carotenoid contents (R2 = 0.709), while moderate correlation was observed for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total flavonoid contents (R2 = 0.517) and ascorbic acid (R2 = 0.673).

Opis:
Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural antioxidant, belonging to the group of polyphenolic compounds. It displays a broad spectrum of pro-health effects, ranging from the prevention of cancer to antiviral properties. It is present in many fruit from the rose family (Rosaceae): strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and walnuts as well as cranberries and grapes. The available literature states that the fruit of roses, in addition to their aesthetic and functional applications, also show therapeutic properties, which, among other things, are associated with a high content of polyphenols, including ellagic acid derivatives. The aim of this research was to determine the differences in the content of free ellagic acid in the fruit of selected rose species. The test material consisted of freeze-dried sublimation and ground fruit from the following species of roses: R. canina, R. moyesii, R. pendulina. The fruit was separated into two fractions: flesh and seeds. Quantitative analysis of free ellagic acid was carried out by spectrofluorimetry. The free EA was present both in the flesh and in the seeds of the studied species of roses. Its content in the mentioned fractions varied depending on the species. The flesh of R. pendulina was characterised by the highest level of EA in free form (247.72 μg·g–1 of dry weight). The seeds of R. moyesii proved to be the most abundant in free EA (105.69 μg·g–1 of dry weight).

Opis:
Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is an ornamental bulbous plant and a famous cut flower in tropical and subtropical regions. Post-harvest senescence of the cut flowers is the main factor limiting the marketability of most of these species including tuberose. From the perspective of metabolic changes, senescence happens as the result of oxidative processes induced by active oxygen species production. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and salicylic acid (SA) are compounds with some functions in the post-harvest physiology of some plants. The present study focused on the effect of GABA and SA on vase life and some post-harvest traits of cut tuberose flowers. The plants were sprayed with GABA (5, 10, or 15 mg L–1) and SA (50, 100, or 150 mg L–1) at three stages during growth and before harvest in a greenhouse (30, 45, and 60 days after the planting of the bulbs) and were observed after harvest until senescence. Results showed that GABA and SA positively affected the vase life, water uptake, fresh weight, ion leakage, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll, protein, and catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase enzymatic activity. They postponed senescence. The highest and lowest vase lives were observed in plants treated with 10 mg L–1 GABA (11 days) and control (distilled water) (7 days), respectively. It was found that the treatment of tuberose with GABA and SA during growth can improve its post-harvest quality. However, it is recommended to conduct further studies on them.

The current survey aimed to study the effect of exogenous salicylic acid (SA) application on salinity stress of grapevine cv. ’Sultana’. The leaves of hydroponically cultivated grapes that were under 0, 75 and 150 mM salinity conditions treated with 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mM SA and after two weeks, the factors such as Na+, K+, proline and MDA contents, leaf electrolyte leakage and enzymatic activities were measured. The results showed that all SA treatments were significantly effective at tolerance enhancement by reduction in Na+/K+ ratio, leaf electrolyte leakage, MDA and H2O2 values and promotion in proline content and the enzymatic activities (POD, APX, CAT and SOD) of grapes. These results indicated that SA application at salinity condition could be applied as a promising method for increasing the salinity tolerance of ‘Sultana’ grapes.

Opis:
Blackberries (Rubus spp.) have significant nutraceutical properties, providing phenolic compounds for the consumers. These compounds are useful to human health due to their high antioxidant activity. However, most blackberries destined for fresh markets become unmarketable in 2 to 3 days due to decay and leakage, because they have thin and fragile skin. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on extending the postharvest quality and bioactive compounds of blackberry during refrigerated storage. Blackberry fruits cv. ‘Jumbo’ were dipped in 2% CaCl2, or in 2.0 mM salicylic acid (SA) for 10 min. Total soluble solids contents, titratable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid contents, total phenolics contents, and total antioxidant activity were investigated initially on 4th, 7th, or 10th day (d) of storage. Changes in fresh weight, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and total phenol contents were markedly delayed by both treatments. Berries treated with 2 mM SA or 2% CaCl2 exhibited markedly better visual quality during the storage period. Considering the overall findings, this study revealed that postharvest SA or CaCl2 applications maintained the storage-life and conserved the valuable marketing features of blackberries over 10 d in cold storage, presumably due to their inhibitory effects on fruit senescence.

Seed infection with Alternaria spp. is an important source of severe carrot diseases. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of carrot seed treatments with acetic acid, grapefruit extract and volatile compounds of fir (Abies alba Mill.) and thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) essential oils on their germination, vigour and health. Seeds of two samples were soaked for 30 min in 0.5, 1 and 2% acetic acid, 0.5 and 1% Biosept Active (33% of grapefruit extract), or treated for 72 h or 96 h with volatile compounds of fir and thyme oils individually (10 µl), and jointly (5+5 µl). Controls were untreated seeds and seeds soaked in distilled water. Acetic acid effectively controlled A. alternata and A. radicina in both samples, and did not affect adversely seed germination, however, at the highest concentration deteriorated seed vigour. Biosept Active was less effective, however at 1% concentration decreased seeds infestation with A. alternata in sample I, and at concentrations of 0.5 and 1% reduced percentages of seeds infested with A. alternata and A. radicina in sample II. Essential oils treatments in some cases favoured growth of A. dauci and A. radicina.

This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of water salinity and nano-silica (NS) and humic acid (HA) on Bermuda grass. The study was carried out under greenhouse and exterior space conditions in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangements. Treatments included 4 water salinity levels (0, 5, 7 and 9 dS/m) and 4 level of NS (0, 1, 2 and 3 mm/l) as well as 4 level of HA (0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/l). Results indicated a decrease in chlorophyll content, and increase in proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and electrolyte leakage (EL) with increasing levels of salinity. The chlorophyll content in greenhouse and exterior space also increased with increasing levels of NS and HA, while proline in two environments, with increasing levels of NS and HA decreased. EL with increasing levels of NS fluctuated, but with increasing levels of HA, it decreased in two environments. With increasing levels of NS, CAT in both environments was eventually decreased after the oscillation, but there was no particular trend in HA levels. With increasing levels of NS and HA, MDA in the greenhouse decreased and in the exterior space – it increased. Finally, by increasing levels of NS and HA, SOD did not show any change in the greenhouse condition, but in the exterior space, the SOD was decreased.

In this study, the effects of salicylic acid to antioxidative activity and photosynthetic characteristics in waterlogging stress of two peony cultivars (‘Fengdanbai’ and ‘Mingxing’) were investigated. 4-year-old peony grown in different levels of waterlogging stress and then different concentration prepared SA (0.0, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mmol L⁻¹) sprayed on fresh leaves of peony. The antioxidative enzymes activities include superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), chlorophyll content, relative conductivity and MDA content were measured in leaves about different waterlogging treatment, the photosynthetic characteristics were also measured using photosynthetic measurement system. The results showed that waterlogging stress decreased the chlorophyll content in all peony cultivars leaves, but with SA treatment can inhibit the decrease of chlorophyll content. Relative conductivity increased as the extension of waterlogging time in two cultivars. SA treatment could effectively inhibit the increase of relative conductivity, and 0.5 mmol L⁻¹ of SA was the most suitable concentration. SOD, POD, CAT activity increased first and then decreased in different waterlogging condition, SA significantly increased the activity of various enzymes. MDA content was increase as the expansion of waterlogging time in two cultivars. SA inhibits the increase of MDA content. Of all concentration of SA, 0.5 mmol L⁻¹ was the best concentration to inhibit the waterlogging stress. For the photosynthetic characteristics, the net assimilation rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr) and intercellular CO₂ (Ci) were decreased under different waterlogging condition. SA treatment can increase Pn, Gs, Tr and Ci of peony.

The research focused on the effect of GA₃ and BA on the yield of Allium karataviense ‘Ivory Queen’. The substances in concentration of 500 mg₃·dm⁻³ were applied in the form of a 60-minute bulb soaking prior to planting or plant spraying in the green bud phase. It was discovered that GA₃ applied in the both forms causes the inflorescence shoot elongation and the increased number of flowers in inflorescence, and increases the total yield expressed in the bulb weight. When applied in the form of plant spraying, it increases the number of bulbs in the total yield. Plant spraying with BA leads to the production of a greater number of flowers in inflorescence. BA application in the both forms increases the total yield expressed in the bulb weight.

Opis:
Salinity stress is a serious problem in urban landscape of arid and semi arid regions. To overcome the adverse impact of salinity, the application of organic matter and plant nutrients in the growth media for improving the plant growth is essential. An experiment was conducted in order to determine the response of Salvia splendens to salinity levels and also the role of humic acid in the salt stress alleviation. In the current experiment, five salinity levels (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 mM NaCl) and three humic acid (0, 100, 500 and 1000 mg/l) treatments were prepared. The effects of these treatments were investigated on some growth parameters, physiological characteristics and also biochemical compounds. The results indicated that the growth parameters decreased in saline-treated than control plants. Different salinity levels significantly affected relative water content, evaporation rate and also electrolyte leakage. Salinity caused the increase in proline, malondialdehyde, sugar content, DPPH, total phenol content and decrease in chlorophyll, compare to the control plants. Application of humic acid on Salvia splendens decreased the leaf area and plant height compared to the control plants. Thus, regarding the growth parameters, it is probable that the effect of humic acid on the biochemical compounds is similar to salinity effect. The findings suggest that sage is an ornamental plant sensitive to salinity and humic acid (in the studied levels) could not alleviate the negative effects of salt stress on this plant.

Opis:
Broad bean seeds, with a high nutritional value at green maturity stage, are used for direct human consumption and in food processing. However broad bean green seeds had as a very shortly time to use because the green seeds very quickly lost the white-green fresh colour. The aim of the study was to evaluate the content of biologically active substances in fresh broad bean seeds immediately after the harvest and seeds from pods stored for a week under low temperature conditions. Experimental material consisted of fresh, green broad bean seeds of Bachus, Basta, R-366/1, Bolero, Jankiel Biały, and Windsor Biały cultivars. Broad bean seeds were sown in the second decade of April at 60 × 10 cm spacing, 100 seeds per plot of 6.0 m2 area. Broad bean pods were harvested once at the stage of technological maturity of seeds in the second and third decade of July. Marketable seed samples of 500 g were collected for laboratory tests. At the same time, immediately after the harvest, samples of 2 kg marketable broad bean pods of each cultivar were collected and storage within 7 days at 1–4°C. The contents of L-ascorbic acid, chlorophyll (a + b), flavonoids (QE), free phenolic acids sum (CAE), and dry matter were determined in broad bean seeds directly after the harvest as well as in the seeds from the pods stored for 7 days. In the results of the investigation indicate that green faba bean seeds from the storage pods had a good white-green colour and marketable quality, however the seeds had the significantly lowest content of L-ascorbic acid and chlorophyll (a + b). The content of selected biologically active substances in the seeds after storage in the pods indicates a significant difference in dependence on cultivar.
Materiałem doświadczalnym były świeże, zielone nasiona bobu odmian: Bachus, Basta, R-366/1, Bolero, Jankiel Biały i Windsor Biały. Nasiona bobu wysiewano w drugiej dekadzie kwietnia w rozstawie 60 × 10 cm, 100 nasion na poletku o powierzchni 6,0 m2 . Strąki bobu zbierano jednorazowo w fazie dojrzałości technologicznej nasion w drugiej, trzeciej dekadzie lipca.

Opis:
Optimization of the process of biotransformation of hydroquinone into its β-D-glucoside – arbutin, was performed in agitated shoot cultures of Schisandra chinensis. The optimisation involved testing various concentrations of the precursor and different ways of administering it. Arbutin was accumulated mainly in the in vitro cultured biomass (85.2–98.6%). By optimizing the process, a 2.26-fold increase in the overall product content was obtained. The highest amount (17.8 mg·g–1 DW) was found after administering 384 mg·l–1 hydroquinone in a dose divided into two portions. An experiment with the biotransformation of 4-hydro- xybenzoic acid did not produce arbutin but a mixture of two products of glucosylation of the precursor – hydroxybenzoic acid 4-O-β-glucopyranoside and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid β-glucopyranosyl ester. The identity of all biotransformation products was confirmed by 1H-NMR analysis. The results for the production of arbutin by the biotransformation of hydroquinone are of potential practical importance. On the other hand, the fact of confirming the presence of two glucosylation products has a great cognitive value.
