Opis:
The universal frustration measure and its extension to anisotropic systems is calculated for a family of spin Hamiltonians modeling a hypothetical ring-shaped chromium-based molecular magnets. The proposed extension takes into account the impact of single-ion anisotropy on the magnetic centers and behaves more consistently with respect to the isotropic counterpart. The influence of anisotropy on both measures is assessed, which leads to a conclusion that frustration decreases with increasing absolute value of single ion anisotropy.

The properties of hyperspherical representation where the one-body orbitals are expressed in terms of the square root of the electron density, ρ(r) and the angle functions {θ$\text{}_{i}$(r)}$\text{}_{i=1,...,N-1}$, (R.F. Nalewajski, P.M. Kozlowski, Acta Phys. Pol. A74, 287 (1988)) are discussed, and the expression for the kinetic energy density functional is analyzed. This expression contains the Weizsäcker term plus a correction determined by the angle functions. Taking into account both the limit of only one occupied level and the slowly varying electron density with large N, it is shown that the kinetic energy density functional interpolates correctly between the known results. Finally, an example of a linear harmonic oscillator is given and the relation between the usual orbital pictures is discussed.

Opis:
Zero-temperature limits of the local and global thermodynamic quantities in the nine-membered antiferromagnetic s=3/2 spin ring are investigated by means of numerical exact diagonalization. An anisotropic Heisenberg model with tunable bond defect reflecting continuously varying topology (from closed to open ring) is exploited. The frustrated and non-frustrated phases are identified in the ground-state phase diagram determined by a bond-defect strength and magnetic field. Near the phase boundaries significance of the thermal fluctuations affecting the estimates of the local magnetic quantities found earlier at T=1 K is revealed. For the global quantities the effects of thermal fluctuations are found much weaker. A sequence of the local magnetic moments is analysed and their experimental verification at the edges of the non-frustrated and within the entire frustrated phase is suggested at sufficiently low temperature.

We report results of investigation on the fluorescence induced in sodium vapour by pulses of laser light tuned near the 3S → 4P transition (330 nm). The fluorescence was observed in perpendicular and parallel directions in respect to the laser beam. A depletion of fluorescence intensity corresponding to the 5D → 3P transition (498 nm) was observed along the laser beam. We explain this effect as a result of reabsorption that is caused by intense population of the 3P level due to cascade stimulated processes. The most intense depletion occurs about 20 ns after the laser pulse and it corresponds to the moment of maximal population of the 3P level.

The phase diagram of the Askhin-Teller model in two dimensions is determined. Numerical calculations are performed for the simple square L × L lattice using transfer matrix technique. Exploiting finite-size scaling all unknown critical lines were obtained with good accuracy. An extended version of the Ashkin-Teller model is also considered within the molecular field renormalization group method and the critical surface for three-parameter odd-parity Hamiltonian is calculated.

Quantum transfer matrix technique and numerically exact diagonalization method are applied to the Heisenberg spin systems to model ring-shaped molecules. Two cases are investigated: (i) a dozen of S = 1 spins with additional biquadratic exchange and (ii) a dimetallic molecule $Cr_7Cd$, where it is assumed that exchange anisotropy is determined in a local coordination system. In the latter case the calculated susceptibility is compared with experimental results.

Opis:
In this paper we review our results of comprehensive study of molecular nanomagnets recently synthesized in the form of the chromium-based molecules and bimetallic copper-containing chains as well as we present some new findings. We focus on effects of anisotropy, geometry and frustration appearing in various thermodynamic properties of the nanoscale magnets which are described by Heisenberg-like spin models and simulated by accurate numerical methods. We show that bond-dependent exchange anisotropy is needed to model magnetic torque in the Cd-doped chromium ring. We argue that only in the limit of infinite rings (n → ∞) frustration can be considered as the opposite to bipartiteness in the odd numbered (3 ≤ n ≤ 9) s = 3/2 quantum spin rings. We analyse the influence of exchange interactions and anisotropy on magnetic susceptibility of bimetallic (S = 3/2, s = 1/2) chains composed of Cu ions linked to different 3d ions by fitting experimental data. We reach the remarkable consistency of the density functional theory estimates of the magnetic couplings in $Cr_8$ molecule and provide strong support to the spin models exploited in the literature.

Opis:
High-resolution photoinduced transient spectroscopy has been applied to investigating the effect of the 1 MeV neutron fluence on the electronic properties of radiation defects in Czochralski grown silicon in magnetic field. A new approach to the analysis of the photocurrent relaxation waveforms as a function of time and temperature has been presented. It is based on using a two-dimensional numerical procedure with implementation of the inverse Laplace transformation for creating images of the sharp spectral fringes depicting the temperature dependences of the thermal emission rate for detected defect centers. In the material irradiated with the fluence of 3×$10^{14} cm^{-2}$, the dominant traps with activation energies of 75 meV and 545 meV are tentatively identified with an aggregate of three Si interstitials and the trivacancy, respectively. In the material irradiated with the fluence by the order of magnitude higher, the activation energies of the main traps are found to be 115, 350, 505, 545, and 590 meV. These traps are tentatively attributed to an aggregate of four Si interstitials, as well as to vacancy related centers such as $V_3$ (2-/-), $V_2O$ (-/0), $V_3$ (-/0) and $V_4$ (-/0), respectively.

A model enabling the equilibrium conductivity and transient photoconductivity of semi-insulating 4H-SiC to be simulated has been demonstrated. Using this model, the simulations of both equilibrium conductivity and transient photoconductivity have been carried out. Both the simulation and experimental results have shown that the evolution of photoconductivity in time after switching on the band-to-band generation of electron-hole pairs is strongly affected by the properties of deep level defects. The results of transient photocurrent measurements confirm the simulations results indicating that the $Z_{1/2}$ center is a very effective recombination center in semi-insulating 4H-SiC having detrimental effect on the transient photoconductivity.

Systematic magnetic saturation moment and electrical resistivity measurements of the Fe$\text{}_{3(1-\delta)}$O$\text{}_{4}$ and Fe$\text{}_{3-x}$M$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{4}$ (M = Ti, Zn, Al) are presented. Cation distributions for low level doping are proposed and compositional dependencies of the Verwey transition temperature are determined. The latter show striking similarities in their dependence on cation vacancies and dopant concentration for any extraneous cations. These data are the basis for the analysis of the correlation between the presented cations distributions and the Verwey transition.
