Opis:
Spin Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction is analyzed theoretically. We use the Keldysh technique for nonequilibrium processes, modified in order to take into account well-defined splitting of the Fermi surface due to strong spin-orbit coupling. Using such an approach, we reconsider the two-dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and show that impurity scattering processes suppress the spin Hall effect.

Magnetization curves up to 140 kOe have been measured in the temperature range 4.2-100 K on polycrystalline oriented samples for some RT$\text{}_{2}$X$\text{}_{2}$, RTX$\text{}_{2}$ RTX compounds. The magnetic phase diagrams for all samples are determined.

The magnetic properties of RCo$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ (R = Nd, Tb, Dy) compounds were studied by measuring the high-field magnetization in magnetic fields up to 140 kOe and over the temperature range 4.2-45 K. The magnetic field induces in NdCo$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ three metamagnetic phase transitions and two transitions in TbCo$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ and DyCo$\text{}_{2}$Si$\text{}_{2}$ compounds.

Opis:
The SU(2) coherent state path integral is used to investigate the partition function of the Holstein dimer. This approach naturally takes into account the dynamical symmetry of the model. The ground-state energy and the number of the phonons are calculated as functions of the parameters of the Hamiltonian. The renormalizations of the phonon frequency and electron hopping for bonding and antibonding states are considered. The destruction of quasiclassical mean field solution is discussed.

Anti-Stokes luminescence is observed in chromium doped and in undoped ZnSe crystals. In the former case anti-Stokes luminescence is due to two complementary ionization transitions of Cr ions. In the latter case two-photon absorption becomes important at a high excitation density.

Opis:
In this paper we propose a method of intercalation of layered single crystals with atoms of 3d-metals in a magnetic-field gradient. We report on structure properties of Co_{x}InSe and Co_{x}In₂Se₃ layered crystals intercalated by cobalt. It was established that ferromagnetic ordering at room temperature is observed in the intercalated crystals. The crystals are a nanocomposite material that consists of a layered matrix and arrays of Co nanoformations on the van der Waals surfaces of InSe and In₂Se₃ layers.

Opis:
We report on MBE growth and study of optical and structural properties of (ZnSe/MgS)/ZnCdSe distributed Bragg reflectors with λ=520 nm and R$\text{}_{max}$=97%. The samples were grown pseudomorphically on GaAs substrate using ZnS as a sulphur source. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical measurements showed good optical and structural characteristics of the Bragg reflectors.

Fast spin relaxation of Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ ions in a magnetic quantum well of CdMnTe with 1% Mn fraction is related to a very efficient spin-flip interaction between Mn ions and free carriers. This mechanism of spin relaxation becomes dominant at increased excitation densities. The observed response of the photoluminescence bands to the Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ magnetic resonance indicates that free carriers are heated at the magnetic resonance conditions. A decrease in formation/recombination rates of free and trion excitons is observed. Donor bound exciton photoluminescence is enhanced, which we relate to delocalization of free excitons, caused by interaction with microwave heated free carriers.

Opis:
The influence of addition of Zn on band parameters of Zn$\text{}_{x}$Cd$\text{}_{y}$Hg$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Te solid solution at different temperatures (4.2-200 K) was investigated. The cyclotron resonance at 4.2 K and magnetophonon resonance at 77-200 K were used to determine band structure parameters. The temperature dependence of band structure parameters (energy gap, effective mass of electron) for the composition of series of epilayers (x varied in 0.08-0.20 range and y - 0.07-0.12) was obtained. It is found that band structure parameters for some compositions (for example x = 0.17, y = 0.08) are almost independent from temperature and equal: γ₁$\text{}^{L}$= 19.55, γ₂$\text{}^{L}$ = γ₃$\text{}^{L}$ = 8.5, K$\text{}^{L}$ = 6.48, F = -0.5, E$\text{}_{g}$ = 0.35 eV, E$\text{}_{p}$ = 17.9 eV. The effective mass of electrons was found to be greater with addition of Zn while the effective mass of heavy holes is left unchanged.

Opis:
The electronic structure of the ternary RAgSn (R=Ce,Pr,Nd,Dy) compounds which crystallize in the hexagonal LiGaGe-type structure was studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Core-levels and valence bands were investigated. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy valence bands are compared with the ones calculated using the spin-polarized tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. The obtained results indicate that the valence bands are mainly determined by the Ag 4d band. The spin-orbit splitting values Δ$\text{}_{SO}$ determined from the XPS spectra of 3d$\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ and 3d$\text{}_{3}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ are equal to 18.8eV for R= Ce, 20.2eV for R = Pr and 22.6eV for R = Nd. The analysis of these spectra on the basis of the Gunnarsson-Schönhammer model gives a hybridization of f orbitals with the conduction band. The calculation of the total energy for two models of the crystal structure: an ordered of the LiGaGe-type and a disordered one of the CaIn$\text{}_{2}$-type indicate that in these compounds the LiGaGe-type structure is stable. Additionally, the temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity of CeAgSn and DyAgSn are investigated. At high temperatures the resistivity is not a linear function of temperature which indicates an electron-phonon interaction in the presence of a small s-d scattering, whereas at low temperatures anomalies connected with the magnetic phase transitions are observed.

Opis:
The core-level and valence band electronic states studies of single crystalline transition metal silicides (Mn$\text{}_{1-x}$Fe$\text{}_{x}$)$\text{}_{5}$Si$\text{}_{3}$ (x=0 and 0.05) by the X-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopies are reported. The Mn 2p core-level spectra for both compounds were ascribed to the relevant Mn sites in their crystal structure. The valence band spectra were compared with the result of ab-initio band calculations using the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method. It was concluded that the enhancement of the spectral density within the 2 eV binding energy region below the Fermi energy comes from the effect of strongly correlated Mn 3d electrons.

We report on molecular beam epitaxy of CdSe/CdMgSe heterostructures on InAs(001) substrates and studies of their optical and structural properties. The CdMgSe energy gap versus composition dependence is determined. The zinc-blende MgSe band-gap energy and optical bowing parameter are estimated to be 4.05 eV and 0.2 eV, respectively. The CdSe quantum wells embedded into CdMgSe barriers demonstrate intense photoluminescence. Effective mass approximation calculations of electron-heavy hole optical transitions in CdSe quantum well are in a good agreement with the experimental data obtained.

Optical absorption measurements were exploited to study periodic InN:In structures grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy with the thickness of the metallic inclusions varied from 2 to 48 monolayers. We demonstrate that the observed higher-energy shift of an effective absorption edge may be due to In depletion of the InN matrix via the coalescence of In into large clusters, accompanied by the respective higher-energy shift of the Mie resonance. The relevant uncertainty in the optical gap of InN is discussed.

The paper reports on plasma-assisted MBE growth of good quality N-face GaN layers directly on c-Al₂O₃ substrates. Growth kinetics under different growth conditions (substrate temperature, Ga to activated nitrogen flux ratio, etc.) during deposition of GaN(0001) and GaN(0001̅) both by the ammonia-based MBE or plasma-assisted MBE was studied. It was found that atomically smooth surface of 1 μm thick GaN(0001̅) films can be achieved by plasma-assisted MBE at the relatively high substrate temperature $T_S$ ≈ 760°C and Ga to activated nitrogen flux ratio $F_Ga//F_N^\ast$ ≈ 1.8.

Opis:
A comparative analysis of several methods of interpretation of solvent influence on molar Kerr constants of solutes was done. The analysis was based on experimentally determined electro-optical and dielectric properties of binary solutions of organic substances with various polarities, polarizabilities and optical anisotropies. It was found that the role of universal van-der-Waals interactions treated via London-Debye-Keesom potentials was best accounted for by a modified orientational theory of Kerr effect that developed the ansatz of reactive field and local dielectric permittivity. An extrapolation method of determination of gas phase molar Kerr constants of solutes was deduced from the theory.
