$Lu_2SiO_5$:Ce (LSO) scintillator is one of the scintillators used for positron emission tomography because of its high efficiency of gamma-ray detection. We tried to use LSO for positron annihilation lifetime and age-momentum correlation measurements because the high efficiency is needed to reduce the positron irradiation effect during measurements. The high efficiency with reasonable time resolution was successfully obtained by use of the dynode signals from photomultiplier tubes.

ZnO nanocrystalline powders were fabricated by the solutions prepared by dissolving zinc acetate in isopropyl alcohol. Ethanolamine was used to enhance the solubility of acetates. Nanocrystalline powders were obtained either from the dried gels or precipitated solutions followed by calcination at different temperatures. Microstructural characterization of the powders showed that both morphology and the crystallite size of powders significantly altered based on the fabrication method and the calcination temperature.

Opis:
In this work we were interested in the use for the localization of the ship noise sources in the water environment. Particular interest was dedicated to identifying of narrow band contribution to the total spectra of the ship hydroacoustic noise. The analyses were performed in time and frequency domain. The diesel engine, the electric motor and the propeller have notably been studied and the different frequencies connected to these devices have been listed. Extensive measurements were made of the underwater radiated noise of K1 and K2, small vessels powered by an electric and diesel engines. The discrete Fourier transform and the short time Fourier transform and sound intensity method were used for a precise analysis. The coherence function was also performed to associate each component of underwater noise with the vibrating part of the engine, which generates it. The measurement results obtained here have been later analyzed and a criticism of each method has been done, focusing on its advantages in the field of the identification of the noise sources.

The paper presents the problems encountered during calibration of devices equipped with all-weather microphones, which results in frequent omissions in the periodic check-up of monitoring systems. Such a check-up should be regularly carried out, as it would result in broadening and unification of the knowledge concerning the measurements and the evaluation of their uncertainty in the environmental conditions.

Theoretical discussion about the ultrasonic relaxation process related to energy transfer between translational and vibrational degrees of freedom as well as to the existing of chemical isomerism is presented. Two basic ultrasonic measurements methods of absorption and velocity in very wide frequency range from hundreds kHz to tens GHz are described. Several experimental examples of advantage of the ultrasonic spectroscopy are also shown.

Powder diffraction covers a variety of applications ranging from high resolution structure determination to time-resolved experiments. This wide range can be covered if the properties of synchrotron radiation, especially the continuous spectrum and the high collimation, are properly taken advantage of. The latter property favours parallel beam geometry. The instrumental function for such a setup is aberration-free and can be derived using only the angular characteristics of its optical components, namely the divergence of the incoming beam and the reflection or transmission curves of the optical elements. The continuous spectrum allows either anomalous dispersion experiments or the use of a broad energy band for experiments on a short time scale. To achieve high flexibility in combination with the use of specialised setups for the different types of experiments a special diffractometer has been built at HASYLAB.

Short overview of optical methods which proved to be useful in the characterization of HTSC thin film substrates is presented. Preliminary tests in polariscopic arrangements, interferometric measurements, optical absorption and emission spectroscopy reveal macroscopic deficiencies of the crystal. Intentionally introduced impurity ions serve as probes of a local strength and symmetry of the crystal field. Results of optical study of SrLaGaO$\text{}_{4}$ and SrLaAlO$\text{}_{4}$ crystals are presented and discussed.

In this article the author presents improved techniques of signal processing used in low-coherent measurement systems. The author proposes to utilize the synthesized sources in the system with the temporal signal processing. It will be shown that the exploit of such a source can substantially reduce the signal-to-noise ratio required to identify the central fringe position. In case of using spectral signal processing, the author proposes to control the position of maximum in the spectral pattern which modifies the phase difference between interfering beams. The results of experimental works will show that described techniques can be an effective method for improving the signal processing in low-coherent measurement systems.

Opis:
The paper describes measuring methods of weak resonant scattering signals occurring in X-ray diffraction pattern of a crystal containing light atoms (C, N, O, F) in its unit cell. Difficulties resulting from the large distance on the energy scale between the K-absorption edges of light atoms and contemporary available energy range of X-ray sources for diffraction experiments may be overcome using mixed synchrotron radiation and sealed tube measurements. Techniques such as high resolution synchrotron radiation diffraction experiment, low resolution azimuthal scan, top reflection azimuthal scan are discussed and their applications are presented. Several enantiomer correctness indicators, evaluating the confidence level of absolute structure determination, are applied for crystals containing oxygen or nitrogen as anomalous scatterers. Resonant scattering of light atoms, which are fundamental constituents of organic molecules and polymers, carries the information about the absolute structure. Growing importance of stereospecific drugs which follows recent recognition of drug-receptor interaction mechanism increases the demand for determination of drug molecule handedness. Investigation of absolute structure for molecules in their original shape (without the introduction of heavy anomalous scatterers) is potentially a vast application field of the described methodology.

Opis:
The nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation times of solvent water nuclei are known to decrease upon addition of diamagnetic solute protein. For this reason NMR relaxation methods are able to provide information on molecular dynamics changes of water protons and their interaction with macromolecules' surfaces. We present results of measurements of relaxation rates $R_1$ = 1/$T_1$, $R_2$ = 1/$T_2$ and $R_{1ρ}$ = 1/$T_{1ρ}$ in the rotating frame for three proteins: chicken egg white lysozyme, egg white albumin, and bovine serum albumin, obtained at proton resonant frequency of 60 MHz. Besides the relaxation rates dependences on concentration in the 4-23% (g/100 g solution) range, the analysis of the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill CPMG multi-echo $T_2$ experiments with variable pulse rate τ was performed. The dependences of relaxation rates on protein concentration are linear at low concentration. When protein concentration increases the slope of the straight line rapidly changes at so-called "critical" concentration which depends on MW of the diluted protein. Investigated dispersion of $T_2$, obtained using the CPMG method with a variable pulse rate, for concentrations higher and lower than the "critical" one, exhibits unequal behavior. At high concentration one-exponential curves and at low concentration two-exponential curves correspond closely with experimental data. The obtained parameters of exponents allow an estimation of the ratio of the amount of water with the determined motion freedom, that is free and bounded water, in solution. We showed that the CPMG dispersion method applied to aqueous protein solutions may widen the current understanding of the nature of molecular dynamics of hydrated water protons in non-perturbed environment.

Opis:
In this paper we propose a quantum mechanical evaluation model for homolytic dissociation energies. Using AM1 and PM3 semi-empirical methods we have characterized molecular structures and fragments that resulted from the chemical bond dissociation. Total binding energies were determined for the geometrically optimized molecular structures of fragments that resulted due to the breaking of chemical bonds, as well as for transitional states. The reaction enthalpy and activation energies were correlated with homolytic dissociation energies. Accuracy of the method and application fields of different evaluation modalities were achieved by the intercomparison of obtained values with experimental ones found in literature. More than 74 organic and inorganic compounds were analyzed.

The paper presents two methods of determining the planar waveguide birefringence and the measuring stands, which are used to determine the beat length of planar waveguide structures. The light is introduced into the waveguide through a prism coupler. The first method applies measurements of scattered light. The second method uses an immersion coupler. The most fundamental property of an immersion coupler is the possibility to change fluently the propagation length while immersing the waveguide.
