Opis:
X-ray diffraction studies of liquid naphthalene and, for the sake of comparison, of liquid benzene and diphenyl were performed. The results permitted the determination of the intermolecular distances and the packing coefficient. A comparison of the structures of liquid naphthalene, benzene, and diphenyl shows that in benzene and diphenyl 3 coordination spheres of molecular ordering can be distinguished in the range up to 18 Å, while in naphthalene only two in the range up to 15 Å. Analysis of the space packing in (benzene, naphthalene, and diphenyl) all liquids studied has proved its substantial increase with increasing volume of their molecules.

Opis:
As it is difficult to obtain human stratum corneum for testing the pharmacological effect of the drugs, many researchers have tried to find alternative membrane for this purpose, instead of the human skin. Many animal skins e.g. pig, reptile, or fish skin seem to be suitable for this purpose. Therefore this project will provide more details to help understand more deeply the structure of these alternative skins. This project is focused on the fish skin because such skin can be easily found in Germany. Two different techniques i.e. small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) have been applied for characterization of some local fish skins. The results showed that different skins (i.e. human stratum corneum, pig, shed snake, and fish) showed small differences in SWAXS patterns as well as in DSC thermograms. The drug paracetamol and the surfactant sodium lauryl sulphate can penetrate into the fish skins and they can affect a rearrangement of the inner structure which contains different lipids and proteins. The data are in agreement with those obtained for the shed snake skins in our previous study.

Results of electrical resistivity and $\text{}^{119}$Sn Mössbauer effect measurements for two samples of CeAg$\text{}_{2}$Sn$\text{}_{2}$ compound are presented. A sharp drop in resistance of an annealed sample at 3.5 K might have suggested a superconducting transition while for the as-melted specimen only a modest change in ρ vs. T slope is observed at this temperature. Resonance γ-absorption reveals differences and similarities on a microscopic scale between the two samples. The occurrence of certain regions of a long-range magnetic ordering within the CeAg$\text{}_{2}$Sn$\text{}_{2}$ phase is unambiguously demonstrated by the presence of hyperfine splitting. Temperature variation of the hyperfine field follows a molecular field spin-½ function.

The local electronic state of Te in the helical chains of CuXY$\text{}_{2(1-x)}$Te$\text{}_{2x}$ (X = Cl, Br; Y = Se, S) were studied using the Mössbauer spectroscopy of $\text{}^{125}$Te at 10 K and 70 K. The isolated chains of Te in these compounds are less rigid than those in elemental Te. The determined data of quadrupole splitting Δ and Debye temperature Θ$\text{}_{D}$ are indicative of strong local ordering of Te in one of the two non-equivalent crystallographic positions. It was not possible to resolve crystallographic positions by the Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Opis:
The magnetic translation group was introduced as a set of operators T(R)=exp[-iR·(p-eA/c)/h]. However, these operators commute with the Hamiltonian for an electron in a periodic potential and a uniform magnetic field if the vector potential A (the gauge) is chosen in a symmetric way. It is showed that a local gauge field A$\text{}_{R}$(r) on a crystal lattice leads to operators, which commute with the Hamiltonian for any (global) gauge field A = A(r). Such choice of the local gauge determines a factor system ω(R,R') = T(R)T(R')T(R+R')$\text{}^{-1}$, which depends on a global gauge only. Moreover, for any potential A a commutator T(R)T(R')T(R)$\text{}^{-1}$T(R')$\text{}^{-1}$ depends only on the magnetic field and not on the gauge.

Opis:
High $T_c$ cuprate superconductors are characterized by two robust features: their strong electronic correlations and their intrinsic dynamical local lattice instabilities. Focusing on exclusively that latter, we picture their parent state in form of a quantum vacuum representing an electronic magma in which bound diamagnetic spin-singlet pairs pop in and out of existence in a Fermi sea of itinerant electrons. The mechanism behind that resides in the structural incompatibility of two stereo-chemical configurations $Cu^{II}O₄$ and $Cu^{III}O₄$ which compose the CuO₂ planes. It leads to spontaneously fluctuating Cu-O-Cu valence bonds which establish a local Feshbach resonance exchange coupling between bound and unbound electron pairs. The coupling, being the only free parameter in this scenario, the hole doping of the parent state is monitored by varying the total number of unpaired and paired electrons, in chemical equilibrium with each other. Upon lowering the temperature to below a certain T*, bound and unbound electron pairs lock together in a local quantum superposition, generating transient localized bound electron pairs and a concomitant opening of a pseudo-gap in the single-particle density of states. At low temperature, this pseudo-gap state transits via a first order hole doping induced phase transition into a superconducting state in which the localized transient bound electron pairs get spatially phase correlated. The mechanism driving that transition is a phase separation between two phases having different relative densities of bound and unbound electron pairs, which is reminiscent of the physics of ⁴He-³He mixtures.

This study is based on laboratory experiments for computing depth of local scour around group bridge pier, considering the effects of upstream flow conditions, size of pier, median size of bed material and spacing between bridge piers on the maximum scour depth and scour pattern around bridge piers. The study was conducted using a physical hydraulic model for bridge piers, operated under clear-water condition and using uniform cohesionless sand as bed material. Three different models of bridge piers, having different sizes were used for showing the effect of the size on the local scour.

Scanning force microscopy was used in the contact mode to determine the adhesion force between a mica surface and a silicon nitride tip. The measurements were performed in an aqueous solution of sodium and calcium chlorides. The adhesion force according to the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey- Overbeek theory depends on the competition between two kinds of forces: van der Waals and electrostatic "double layer". Two different curves of adhesion force versus salt concentration were obtained from the experiment with monovalent and divalent ions. The tip-surface adhesion force was determined from a statistical analysis of data obtained from the force vs. distance retracting curves.

A simple spin system is constructed to simulate dynamics of asset prices and studied numerically. The outcome for the distribution of prices is shown to depend both on the dimension of the system and the introduction of price into the link measure. For dimensions below 2, the associated risk is high and the price distribution is bimodal. For higher dimensions, the price distribution is Gaussian and the associated risk is much lower. It is suggested that the results are relevant to rare assets or situations where few players are involved in the deal making process.

Non-local electron-positron correlation effects in solids are studied. The weighted density approximation is applied to calculations of the non-local electron-positron correlation functions. The calculated weighted density approximation electron-positron enhancement factors for the core electrons are compared with those obtained within the local density approximation. Also, differences in the electron-positron enhancement factors due to the s, p, d and f angular momentum channels of the electron charge density are studied. The formalism is applied to ab initio calculations of positron lifetimes in a variety of metals and silicon. The influence of various approximations to the electron-positron interaction on the positron lifetimes is also presented. The weighted density approximation results are compared to those calculated within the local density approximation, the recent generalized gradient approximation and with experimental data.

We consider precursor effects of the superconducting order which possibly show up in the normal state of high temperature superconducting materials. The local pairs of electrons or holes are formed there well above the transition temperature T$\text{}_{c}$. Due to strong quantum fluctuations the single particle density of states can be partly depleted near the Fermi energy leading to the pseudogap. We claim that this feature should go hand in hand with emergence of the Bogoliubov-type quasiparticles. In the normal state they are expected to be damped and acquire the long lifetime upon passing T$\text{}_{c}$. These Bogoliubov-type quasiparticles may nevertheless become correlated on a finite spatial and temporal scale. We discuss how such short-range pair correlations can be detected experimentally.
