Opis:
Polycrystalline diamond films with preferred (111) and (222) facets were fabricated inside hot filament chemical vapour deposition reactor on silicon wafers using a mixture of 1% methane in hydrogen at various reactor pressures ranging from 10 to 50 mbar. Regarding characterization of diamond films, internal texture, surface morphology, quality of diamond and electrical conductivity were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, the Raman spectroscopy and four-point-probe van der Pauw techniques, respectively. Results of these studies demonstrate that polycrystalline diamond structure is grown in random orientation with (111) facet being dominant showing sharp grain boundaries. Moreover, growth rate was found to increase with pressure up to 20 mbar and then decreased for further rise in pressure. That is why grain density is high with relatively smaller grains at higher pressures caused by higher nucleation rates. In contrast, electrical resistivity decreased ≈3 orders of magnitude showing a minimum at 2.9×10⁶ Ω cm as pressure was increased in the reactor. Reactor pressure during film growth resulted in poor surface morphology, absence of sp³ bonds and low resistivity. Hence, decrease of resistivity makes diamond films desirable for many electrical applications in semiconducting/electronic devices.

Opis:
Polycrystalline diamond films were deposited by electron assisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition method on (001) Si substrate using a mixture of propane-butane and hydrogen as working gas. In morphology investigation of diamond films using scanning electron microscope, it was found that diamond film morphology is changing from (111), for hydrocarbon concentration below 0.5 vol.%, via (100) to the so-called "ball-like" structure. The diamond film quality and defect structures in it were investigated by Raman and electron spin resonance spectroscopy for the purpose of obtaining basic knowledge which will aid the growth of defect free epitaxial diamond film for electronic and optical applications.

The use of diamond as material for X-ray detector is subject of investigation and practice in radiotherapy, space and material science and technology. This paper presents the results of application of Monte Carlo method for simulation of photon transport through diamond detector. The aim is restitution and demonstrating of numerical technique for characterization of electrical properties for different detector conditions and configurations. Monte Carlo code was adopted to determine the energy deposited and dose distribution in the structure of diamond detector. Our results show that the use of numerical simulations may be of essential help in design of diamond detector systems.

Models of social response concern the identification and delineation of possible responses to social pressure. Most models are based on simple one-dimensional conceptualizations of conformity and its alternatives even though more sophisticated models have been available for a number of years. The diamond model is perhaps the most refined of the two-dimensional formulations. It is particularly useful in building agent-based models of opinion dynamics because it gives clear and explicit operational definitions of basic types of social response. In fact, the diamond model is actually a ready recipe for a microscopic model of opinion dynamics. Moreover, it fits quite well Einstein's simple but no simpler strategy. In this work, we will present the logic of the diamond model as well as its implications for agent-based modeling.

Opis:
Dual-frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition was used to grow diamond-like carbon thin films from $CH_4,$ $H_2$ gas mixture. The effects of radio frequency, microwave power, and gas ratio were investigated. Various species have been identified in the $CH_4-H_2$ plasma using optical emission spectroscopy and their effects on film properties have been studied. Increasing the RF power to 400 W, the variation trend of refractive index and CH, $C_2$ intensity ratios change beyond the 300 W, but the growth rate shows the continuous increasing character from 6 to 11.6 nm/min. Increasing the hydrogen content in the system, the intensity ratio of CH, $C_2$, $CH^{+}$ and growth rate show decreasing tendency and the refractive index rises from 1.98 to 2.63. Adding MW produced plasma to the system grows the refractive index to 2.88 and growth rate to 10.8 nm/min. The water contact angle rises from 58.95° to 73.74° as the RF power increases to 300 W but begins to reduce until 400 W. In addition, the contact angle shows a growing tendency by increasing the hydrogen flow to the chamber. In addition, the structures of the films were investigated by the Raman spectroscopy.

Opis:
Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films with diamond like structures have been formed on different substrates at very low energies and temperatures by a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process employing acetylene as the precursor gas. The plasma source was of a cascaded arc type with Ar as carrier gas. The films were grown at very high deposition rates. Deposition on Si, glass and plastic substrates has been studied and the films characterized in terms of $sp^3$ content, roughness, hardness, adhesion and optical properties. Deposition rates up to 20 nm/s have been achieved at substrate temperatures below 100°C. The typical $sp^3$ content of 60-75% in the films was determined by X-ray generated Auger electron spectroscopy. Hardness, reduced modulus and adhesion were measured using a MicroMaterials Nano Test Indenter/Scratch tester. Hardness was found to vary from 4 to 13 GPa depending on deposition conditions. Adhesion was significantly influenced by the substrate temperature and in situ DC cleaning. Hydrogen content in the film was measured by a combination of the Fourier transform infrared and Rutherford backscattering techniques. Advantages of these films are: low ion energy and deposition temperature, very high deposition rates, low capital cost of the equipment and the possibility of film properties being tailored according to the desired application.

Bragg-case synchrotron section topographs were studied in parallel slabs cut from a synthetic diamond of a good quality. The topographs revealed the Pendellösung fringes and images of dislocations and other defects containing several fringe systems. The experiment provided the opportunity for studying of the theoretical dislocation images obtained by numerical integration of the Takagi-Taupin equations. A program employing a variable step of integration in the Bragg-case has been presented. The influence of the finite slit width and of the limited beam divergence on the theoretical images is also discussed.

The low power reactor for microwave chemical vapor deposition process is described. The rotating Mo holder of 12 mm diameter and 6 mm height with the diamond substrate was heated by 2.45 GHz microwaves to temperature about 800°C in the range of (1.5-7)% $CH_{4}//H_{2}$ mixture to create plasma at pressure 70 Tr. Stabilization of the holder temperature was performed by optical observation of radiation from the holder followed by adjusting of the magnetron power. Diamond detectors are produced using microwave chemical vapor deposition process grown on single crystal diamond high pressure high temperature Sumimoto substrates, [100] oriented. The response of diamond detectors for X-rays has been measured in the current mode using medical X-rays tube. The linear response of the diamond detector current versus X-ray tube current (dose) is presented.

Thin polycrystalline diamond films were deposited on prepared (100) Si substrate by hot filament chemical vapor deposition using a mixture of hydrogen, propane-butane and argon. During investigations the gas flow of argon was varied from 100 sccm to 400 sccm. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that the addition of argon to the gas phase influenced the growth rate and film structure. An increase of argon concentration provokes an increase in film porosity and decrease in crystalline facetting. The quality of these films was investigated with the use of the Raman spectroscopy.

Surface conductivity of thin diamond films was measured as a function of temperature up to 450°C. Hydrogenated diamond was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition in hydrogen/carbon plasma. Low values of charge carrier activation energy ( ≈ 10 meV) were observed, when hydrogenated diamond films were exposed to the ambient humid air. However, the activation energy increased by two orders of magnitude as film temperature exceeded 300°C. We have attributed this behavior to the desorption of the $H_2O$ adlayer. The jump of the activation energy did not occur, when experiment was performed in vacuum. We have also shown that donor doping leads to the up-shift of the Fermi level much above the acceptor-like band gap levels induced by surface C-H bonds, which cannot be compensated by transfer of electrons from diamond to the double $H-H_2O$ layer.

The Haruta method is used for stereoscopic observation of a 1.5 × 4 × 4 mm$\text{}^{3}$ cuboctahedral synthetic diamond with transmission double-crystal topography. The experiments were performed using a synchrotron double-crystal arrangement with asymmetrical diamond 220 reflection selecting 1.0 Å radiation. The appropriate Haruta pairs were matched from a series taken with positions on the rocking curve changed by small intervals. A reasonable stereoscopic effect was observed for most defect images, particularly dislocations, stacking faults and growth sector boundaries. It was established that some interference fringes do not produce good stereoscopic effects and appear on the exit surfaces of the diamond.

This work reports some thermoluminescent properties of chemical vapour deposition diamond film grown by 5 kW microwave assisted plasma chemical vapour deposition. The 2" diamond sample with the thickness of 32 μm was exposed to gamma radiation in the dose range 0.6-55 Gy. The thermoluminescent glow curve of diamond sample displayed a peak with the maximum centered at 240°C. The linearity of the detector response in the range of 10-55 Gy was observed. The bleaching effect, seen as fading of the thermoluminescent signal when the device was exposed to light in the visible range, was also noticed. Two-dimensional dose distribution was measured using 2D thermoluminescent reader equipped with a sensitive 640 × 480 pixels charge coupled device camera. The surface morphology of the diamond film was observed with scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The grain size was estimated as about 15 μm. The Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize phase purity. The width and position of the diamond Raman band around 1332 $cm^{-1}$ indicated that the coating is crystalline and of good quality. It is concluded that good quality chemical vapour deposition diamond coating could be promising material for thermoluminescent dosimetry.

The lattice parameter for polycrystalline diamond is determined as a function of temperature in the 4-300 K temperature range. In the range studied, the lattice parameter, expressed in angstrom units, of the studied sample increases according to the equation a = 3.566810(12) + 6.37(41) × $10^{-14} T^{4}$ (approximately, from 3.5668 to 3.5673 Å). This increase is larger than that earlier reported for pure single crystals. The observed dependence and the resulting thermal expansion coefficient are discussed on the basis of literature data reported for diamond single crystals and polycrystals.
