A review is presented of the anomalous magnetic and superconducting properties of the heavy-fermion compound UPt$\text{}_{3}$ that has been a subject of extensive study during the past twenty years. The normal-state and superconducting properties of the compound were evaluated from magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic studies. In addition, neutron-diff raction and muon spin relaxation experiments were performed in the normal and superconducting states. The compound is characterized by a multiple superconducting phase diagram and by the coexistence of superconductivity and short-range antiferromagnetic interactions with quasi-static moments of the order of 10$\text{}^{-2}$μ$\text{}_{B}$/U-atom. Upon substituting Pt by Pd, the short-range magnetic interactions give way to long-range antiferromagnetic order with a maximal ordering temperature of 6 K for the 5 at.% Pd alloy and a magnetic moment of 0.6μ$\text{}_{B}$/U-atom. Superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic order are in competition resulting in a critical composition of 0.6 at.% Pd. At this concentration, non-Fermi liquid behaviour is observed.

Opis:
TOF mass spectrometer for research of third-harmonic generation effect in isotropic media was used. The nonlinear medium in the experiment was Xe gas, the incident beam had the wavelength of 3546 Ǻ and the generated radiation had the wavelength of 1182 Ǻ. A measure for the intensity of generated VUV was the intensity of the ion current generated at the spot where a non-homogeneous effusive molecular (2,2-dimethylbutane) beam was crossed by the VUV beam. The influence of parameters like the diameter of the UV beam and the Xe pressure on the VUV generation process was examined. The third-larmonic generation theory was used to verify the mass spectrometric data.

Opis:
Transverse magnetoresistivity (H ∥ [001]; and current ∥ [110]) of U$\text{}_{3}$As$\text{}_{4}$ has been measured in field up to 35 T. An abrupt change of the magnetoresistivity behaviour from saturated (low field) to unsaturated (high field) type was observed at the spin reorientational transition (19.1 T at 4.2 K). The transition is accompanied by a peak in the magnetoresistivity. The behaviour is ascribed to fractional spin polarization of the band electrons.

Opis:
The low-temperature specific-heat C(T) data of high-T$\text{}_{c}$ superconductors RBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-x}$(R123O$\text{}_{7-x}$) were reviewed. A discussion of the C(T) data obtained on single-crystalline samples of Er123O$\text{}_{7-x}$ and Sm123O$\text{}_{7-x}$ compounds in applied magnetic fields for better evaluation of the crystal-electric-field parameters is given. The C(T) measurements of Sr-substituted compounds RBaSrCu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7}$ revealed the λ-type of peak related to the antiferromagnetic order at 1.2 K and 0.6 K respectively for Dy- and Er-compounds. The magnetic singlet ground state in these compounds is produced by weak exchange interactions of -0.05 T/μ$\text{}_{B}$ and -0.035 T/μ$\text{}_{B}$, respectively. For Nd- and Sm-compounds, only a broad anomaly around 0.6 K was observed which is well fitted with a Schottky-type anomaly with an energy splitting of 1.4 K.

Raman scattering measurements on (MnTe)$\text{}_{8}$/(Cd$\text{}_{0.64}$Zn$\text{}_{0.36}$Te)$\text{}_{8}$ multilayer grown by MBE method and on various (MnTe)$\text{}_{n}$/(CdTe)$\text{}_{12}$ multilayers (where n=8,12,16,24) were performed at low temperatures. In the z̅(x,x)z polarization, structures corresponding to folded acoustic phonons were found. In z̅(x,y)z polarization new complex structures were observed in the low-frequency part of Raman scattering spectra. A possible magnetic origin of these structures is discussed.

Opis:
Gallium nitride bulk crystals grown at about 15 kbar and 1500 K have been examined by using the high resolution X-ray diffractometry. An analysis of a set of the rocking curves of various Bragg reflections enabled us to estimate a dislocation density. For the crystals of dimensions lower than about 1 mm it is lower than 10$\text{}^{-5}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$. For bigger samples the crystallographic quality worsens. With an application of the reciprocal lattice mapping we could distinguish between internal strains and mosaicity which are both present in these crystals The results for the bulk crystals are compared with those for epitaxial layers.

We have investigated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on magnetic properties of TbNiAl, crystallizing in hexagonal ZrNiAl-type structure. TbNiAl orders antiferromagnetically below $T_{N}$=45 K and undergoes further magnetic phase transition to another AF phase at $T_{1}$=23 K. The magnetic field of $B_{c}$ ≅ 0.3 T applied along the c-axis at 2 K leads to the transition to ferromagnetic order. By applying the hydrostatic pressure, both $T_{N}$ and $T_{1}$ remain almost unaffected whereas $B_{c}$ shows a strong increase. The hydrostatic pressure stabilizes the antiferromagnetic state which can be related to development of structural parameters.

Electromagnetic pollution generated by the electrical devices has been regarded as a new form of pollution, harmful to the society as air and water pollution. The operation of electronic devices in a polluted electromagnetic environment has caused electromagnetic interference to become important concerns. Devices that are vulnerable to interference must often be shielded to protect them from the effects of electromagnetic interference. In this work we describe an interaction of a magnetic fluid based on transformer oil with alternating magnetic field. The magnetic fluid was composed of a transformer oil and dispersed magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. Among the wide range of topics covered, we pay attention to an important field related to the absorption of electromagnetic field by magnetic fluid as a suitable candidate for applications where it is necessary to electrically isolate, remove excess of heat, and to shield electromagnetic fields. We present a method for the determination of shielding effectiveness of the magnetic fluid under high-frequency excitation conditions from 750 MHz to 3 GHz by means of magnetic near field measurements and analysis. Herein, we report the effect of magnetic volume fraction in the magnetic fluid and the effect of the sample thickness on the shielding effectiveness. We have found that the magnetic fluid has a frequency dependent "windows", characterized that either absorb the magnetic field, or facilitate penetration of the magnetic field through the barrier.

Recently a new wave of interest in physics of RCo₂ compounds has been boosted by reports on unusual magnetic short range order configurations in the heavy rare-earth RCo₂ ferrimagnets in paramagnetic state. The newly observed phenomenon called parimagnetism consists in a short-range antiferromagnetic coupling between small ferromagnetic Co clusters and the nearest rare-earth moments. This paper is devoted to results of our experimental investigation of carefully prepared and characterized samples of TmCo₂, a compound on which controversial results can be found in literature. Detailed magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements revealed two magnetic phase transitions at 4.6 and 3.6 K, respectively. The anomalies connected with the transitions are strongly dependent on magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure. The AC susceptibility anomaly connected with the onset of parimagnetism has been found at $T_{f}$=35 K. Contrary to other heavy rare-earth RCo₂ counterparts $T_{f}$ of TmCo₂ is entirely pressure independent.

Opis:
GaN crystals are grown using ammonothermal method at pressures below 5 kbar and temperatures below 550°C. In this method, GaN is synthesised from high purity metallic gallium. The main role in the low temperature GaN crystallization is played by the chemically active and dense ammonia and dissolved mineralizer. Morphology of the obtained crystals as well as solubility experiments prove that gallium nitride is dissolved and crystallised from solution. Physical properties of GaN crystals obtained using ammonothermal method depend on the growth conditions and the type of mineralizer. All GaN samples reveal very intensive photoluminescence, also at room temperature. The spectra of crystals grown with lithium compound mineralizer are shifted towards higher energies in comparison to crystals grown with potassium based mineralizer. At helium temperatures, phosphorescence is also observed.

The intermetallic compound $PrCo_2Ge_2$ exhibits very interesting physical properties: antiferromagnetism below $T_N$ = 28 K, an order to order transition at $T_R$ = 8 K, a rich magnetic phase diagram, and huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy as observed by recent experiments on a single crystal in a magnetic field up to 14 T. We performed first principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The localized $4f^2$ configuration of $Pr^{3+}$ was treated using the open core approximation. The electronic densities of states were obtained and the position of the Fermi level was found. The hybridization between the Co-3d, Pr-5d and Ge-4p states is discussed. The calculated magnetic moment of Co is found to be quite small $(m_{Co} < 0.1 μ_B)$. The first principles calculations of the crystal field interaction were performed as well: the obtained crystal field parameters were used as the starting parameters for further refinement in comparison with experimental data of the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. The crystal field splitting of the 4f states was determined.

Two (Ga,Mn)As samples having different magnetic anisotropy (one with in-plane easy axis and another one with out-of-plane easy axis) were studied by means of magnetotransport experiments. Anisotropy field B_{A} was determined for both samples as a function of temperature. For the sample having in-plane easy axis, an inversion of the direction of planar Hall effect hysteresis was observed upon increase of temperature. This result was simulated using the Stoner-Wohlfarth model.

The growth process of cobalt on Ru(0001) was characterized by photoelectron spectroscopy excited by X-ray and synchrotron radiation. The binding energy position and intensity of the Co 2p$\text{}_{3}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ and Ru 3d$\text{}_{5}\text{}_{/}\text{}_{2}$ core levels as well as the shape and structure of the valence band spectra corresponding to the different stages of the deposition were investigated. An observed small positive binding energy shift is a consequence of an increase in the cobalt adatoms coordination number. The core-level shift between bulk and surface Ru atoms is determined as -360 meV. Upon adsorption of cobalt, the interface peak appears with a shift of -(70÷80) meV relative to the bulk one. On the basis of unchanged energy positions and widths of the Ru-derived features of the valence band spectra, a weak interaction between cobalt and substrate is suggested. The measured valence band could be reproduced by superimposing the spectra of the pure elements.

This article builds on the previous work and describes the interaction of transformer oil-based magnetic fluid (MF) with the radio frequency (RF) magnetic near-field. Three prepared samples of the MF used as a barrier to magnetic near-field, consist of transformer oil and dispersed magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. We pay attention to the important area related to the electromagnetic field shielding by the MF. Such sample of the MF may be a good candidate for applications where it is necessary to simultaneously electrically isolate, remove the excess of heat and to shield electromagnetic interference (EMI). We present a method for the determination of shielding effectiveness (SE) of the MF under RF excitation conditions ranging from 500 MHz to 3 GHz. We report the effect of magnetic volume fraction in the MF and the effect of the sample thickness on the SE.

Opis:
The paper presents results of sintering proppants parameters and its influence on light ceramic proppants obtained by the mechanical granulation method. The proppants were prepared basing on a ceramic composition consisting of three raw materials such as kaolin, clay and bauxite mixed with poly(vinyl alcohol) binder with a molecular weight 26000 g/mol and hydrolysis degree of 88%, added in amount of 5 wt% with respect to the powder. Sintering temperature range oscillated between 1200 and 1225°C, kiln rotations were 1-2 rpm. Sintered proppants were characterized in compliance with PN-EN ISO 13503-2 norm and bulk density, sphericity coefficient, turbidity, solubility in acids and scanning electron microscopy observations have been estimated. The results demonstrated that sintering temperature and kiln rotation have an essential effect of the proppants parameters.
