Opis:
Decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of 2 at.% Cu in Al was investigated by means of electrical resistivity and high-resolution positron lifetime measurements. The phase composition of this alloy was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed by a classical four-point method. Positron lifetime spectra were measured by means of a spectrometer consisting of two BaF$\text{}_{2}$ detectors and a standard fast-slow coincidence system. The specimens were first exposed to the solution heat treatment at 783 K for 19 hours with a subsequent quenching. Then the specimens were isochronally annealed in the temperature range 293 ÷ 573 K. Annealing responses of electrical resistivity and positron annihilation were studied. Resistivity measurements as well as transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the well-known decomposition sequence of the Al-Cu alloy. The decomposition of the alloy was manifested by the decrease in the intensity of positron lifetime component τ$\text{}_{2}$ = (207 ±2 ) ps correlated with simultaneous appearance and increase in the intensity of τ$\text{}_{3}$ = (180 ± 5) ps component. Component τ$\text{}_{2}$ originates from positron annihilation in vacancies trapped at the Guinier-Preston zones while τ$\text{}_{3}$ comes from annihilation of the positrons localized in the misfit dislocations at coherent precipitates of the Al$\text{}_{2}$Cu phase. The shortest observed component τ$\text{}_{1}$ apparently belongs to annihilation of untrapped positrons.

In this study the Al-Cu aluminum alloy with 4 wt% Cu was prepared under controlled atmosphere and coated by microarc oxidation technique for the durations of 40, 80, and 120 min. The phase composition, surface roughness and hardness of the coating were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, profilometry. The outer region contains larger sized porosities while fine porosities were formed in the inner dense region of the coating. The longer coating duration resulted in dense inner region with finely distributed $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ precipitates. The presence of Cu in the outer region is not significant while the presence of Si in inner region was lower than in the outer region. Mullite and $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ phases were formed for 40 min and $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ phase was additionally formed for 80 min and 120 min coating time. The coating thickness increased from 38 μm (40 min) to 115 μm (120 min) while the surface roughness $(R_{a})$ increased from 5 μm (40 min) to 9 μm (120 min).

Opis:
The microstructure of an aluminum alloy containing 53 wt% Zn, 2.1 wt% Mg and 1.3 wt% Cu as main alloying elements has been studied with the focus on the precipitation behavior during the spark plasma sintering process. The starting material was an atomized Al-Zn-Mg-Cu powder with the particle size below 50 μm. The particles showed a solidification microstructure from cellular to columnar or equiaxed dendritic morphology with a large fraction of the alloying elements segregated in form of intermetallic phases, mainly (Zn,Al,Cu)₄₉Mg₃₂ and Mg₂(Zn,Al,Cu)₁₁, at the cell and dendrite boundaries. The microstructure of the sintered specimens followed the microstructure of the initial powder. However, Mg(Zn,Al,Cu)₂ precipitates evolve at the expense of the initial precipitate phases. The precipitates which were initially continuously distributed along the intercellular and interdendritic boundaries form discrete chain-like structures in the sintered samples. Additionally, fine precipitates created during the sintering process evolve at the new low-angle boundaries. The large fraction of precipitates at the grain boundaries and especially at the former particle boundaries could not be solved into the matrix applying a usual solid solution heat treatment. A bending test reveals low ductility and strength. The mechanical properties suffer from the precipitates at former particle boundaries leading to fracture after an outer fiber tensile strain of 3.8%.

Opis:
Amorphous $Y_{50}Cu_{42}Al_8$ ribbon was prepared by melt-spinning technique on the Cu wheel. The crystallisation process was analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Differential scanning calorimetry curves characterising two crystallisation stages of $Y_{50}Cu_{42}Al_8$ alloy were measured in non-isothermal dynamic mode at different heating rates. Activation energies of both steps of crystallisation process were acquired by the Kissinger method and are equal to 570± 56 and 290±29 kJ/mol for the first and second stage, respectively. By annealing the ribbon at a given temperature for various times the nanocrystalline phase grains of the sizes of about 40 nm in diameter were created. The influence of the annealing temperature on the grain size evolution was also examined.

Opis:
Thermal stability and magnetic properties of thin films, of a few Fe-based amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys, have been studied. The alloys belong to the class Fe-M-B, whose representatives are: Fe$\text{}_{87}$Zr$\text{}_{4}$Cu$\text{}_{1}$B$\text{}_{8}$, Fe$\text{}_{87}$Zr$\text{}_{7}$B$\text{}_{6}$, and Fe$\text{}_{87}$Zr$\text{}_{7}$Al$\text{}_{1}$B$\text{}_{5}$ and are of particular interest because of their wide variety of magnetic properties. The films were prepared by flash evaporation onto liquid nitrogen cooled substrates. Measurements of the Kerr effect, the Hall effect, and ferromagnetic resonance in the films were carried out as functions of the annealing temperature. It was found that the changes in the coercive field H$\text{}_{c}$, resonance linewidth ΔH$\text{}_{pp}$, effective magnetization M$\text{}_{eff}$, Hall parameters, and resistance were correlated with the structural changes in the studied films.

Opis:
Thermal analysis techniques remain important tools amongst the large variety of methods used for analysis of the precipitation and dissolution of the Guinier-Preston zone and metastable phase θ' in Al-3wt% Cu. In the present study, the kinetics of precipitation and dissolution of the Guinier-Preston zone and metastable phase θ' in Al-3wt% Cu was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry carried out between room temperature and 430°C at heating rates of 20, 25, and 30°C min¯¹. The activation energies evaluated through isothermal differential scanning calorimetry treatment using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami theory were 25, 100, and 80 kJ mol¯¹ for the Guinier-Preston zone precipitation, formation of θ'/θ and dissolution of θ', respectively. The Avrami constant n obtained by the Ligero method was about 1.5 for the formation of θ'/θ indicating that bulk nucleation is dominant in θ'/θ formation controlled by diffusion from a constant number of nuclei.

Opis:
$Al_{73}Cu_{11}Cr_{16}$ alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying of the irradiated by $Ar^{+}$ ions elemental powders. Evolution of alloy structure at ball milling, as well as during the further annealing, was investigated using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that ball milling leads to the Cu dissolution in Al and Cr and to the formation of $Al_{2}Cu$ intermetallic phase. An increase of the milling duration leads to an increase of the $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content in the samples. Ion irradiation of initial elemental powders results in an increase of their interaction rate at milling. In the case of irradiated powders using as initial materials, a content of $Al_{2}Cu$ phase after milling is higher than in the case of using non-irradiated elemental powders. No effect of irradiation of initial elemental powders on the phase transformation at heating was observed. The annealing results in the decomposition of Al- and Cr-based supersaturated solid solutions. An increase in the $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content at heating was observed only in the samples, which were milled for 4 h. In the samples milled for 14 h, nearly no increase in $Al_{2}Cu$ phase content at heating was observed. Heating up to 500-600°C results in the single-phase decagonal quasicrystalline phase formation for all of the studied samples.

Opis:
The $Al_{65}Cu_{20}Fe_{15}$ alloy has been prepared by conventional casting to the mould and by melt spinning or atomisation techniques. The melt spun ribbon was in the form of fragmented, brittle flakes, atomized powder has spherical shape with average size 17.2 μm. It was found that icosahedral I-phase was the main phase in all types of prepared samples. In the conventionally cast alloy the following phases have been identified additionally: $λ-Al_{13}Fe_4$, τ-AlCu(Fe) and $η_2-AlCu$. In the melt-spun ribbon the formation of $η_2$ is avoided, while in the atomised powder the I-phase coexists with small amount of copper rich τ-phase. In the cast ingot the I-phase form as a product of peritectic reaction λ + L, while in the ribbon and in the powder quasicrystal solidified from the undercooled melt as primary phase and next metastable cubic τ-AlCu(Fe) was formed at the interdendritic areas. Single I-phase grains of the sizes about 1 μm are observed in the ribbon close to the wheel side.

It is well known that Cu and Ag addition on Al-Mg₂Si alloy can enhance its mechanical properties due to solid solution hardening. Several reports are available about the effect of each alloying elements, Cu and Ag, on Al-Mg-Si alloys. In this research, Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Ag alloys have chemical compositions of (1) 0.18Cu-0.18Ag and (2) 0.35Cu-0.35Ag [at.%] fixed Cu/Ag rate of 1.0 are prepared using casting to estimate effects of Cu and Ag amount to precipitation behaviour and mechanical properties. The Vickers microhardness measurement was conducted to estimate mechanical property after ageing treatment microstructure observation was carried out using transmission electron microscopy. In peak-aged at 473 K hardness of each alloys was almost the same, but in peak-aged at 523 K, hardness of 0.35Cu-0.35Ag was higher than 0.18Cu-0.18Ag alloy.

At present study of Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy system is used. Some physical properties of martensitic and bainite phase transformatios in Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn (wt%) alloy were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. In scanning electron microscope observations of Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy were noted two kinds of martensitic phases. These phases were defined as β'₁ (M18R) and γ'₁ (2H) martensites structures. According to differential scanning calorimetry measurement results, the deformation induced temperature is expected to be higher than the thermally induced temperature in Cu-9.97%Al-4.62%Mn alloy for martensite and bainite structures.
