Opis:
The brake roller is one of the elements for the safe operation of gravity flow pallet racks. The brake roller of the magnetic (eddy current) type magnetic brake roller (MBR) is the most promising brake type. The working principle of the MBR is based on electromagnetic induction laws, according to which the braking of a conductor moving in the magnetic field is caused by the interaction of the conductor's eddy currents with the external magnetic field. In the paper, a mathematical model of the pallet motion on an MBR was developed. The equation of motion of the pallet on the MBR was derived. The calculation results were compared with the results of experimental studies of the pallet motion velocity on the MBR. For pallet speed under “drag peak” speed, the error of the mathematical model is <7.7%, and the error starts increasing once over the “drag peak” speed. Additional investigation of the coefficient of magnetic viscosity for speeds greater than the “drag peak” speed is required.

Opis:
Among the many elements of a modern vehicle, the braking system is definitely among the most important ones. Health, and, frequently, life, may rest upon the design and reliability of brakes. The most common friction pair used in passenger cars today is a disc which rotates with the road wheel and a cooperating pair of brake pads. The composite material of the pad results in changing tribological properties as the pad wears, which was demonstrated in experimental studies. The change is also facilitated by the harsh operating conditions of brakes (high and rapid temperature changes, water, etc.). This paper looks into how changing tribology reflects on the heating process of disc and pads during braking. And so a simulation study was conducted, as this method makes it possible to measure temperature in any given point and at any time, which is either impossible or extremely difficult in real life conditions. Finite element method analyses were performed for emergency braking events at various initial speeds of the vehicle reflecting the current road speed limits.

Opis:
When designing or developing friction materials, it is crucial to predict how the modification of the formulation will affect their properties. Fibres are introduced in the composition of the phenolic-based brake friction materials to improve their mechanical strength. Apart from reinforcing the composite, fibres can also affect its tribological and thermophysical properties. In this study two composite friction materials are compared. The difference between the materials was the type of reinforcing fibre used in the formulation – in one case it was glass fibre, in the other steel fibre. Thermal diffusivity of both materials was measured and thermal conductivity was calculated. Frictional characteristics determined by means of full-scale dynamometer tests are analysed and discussed. Substitution of glass fibre with steel fibre led to increase in the friction coefficient. Maximum average temperature below wheel surface, observed during the test of the material containing steel fibre, was lower as compared to the test results of the material with glass fibre in its formulation, despite higher heat flux in the course of brake applications. Thermal conductivity of the friction material was enhanced by including steel fibre in the formulation.

Opis:
In the paper an influence of the cover angle of the pad on temperature fields of the components of the disc brake is studied. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) model of the pad-disc system was developed at the condition of equal temperatures on the contacting surfaces. Calculations were carried out for a single braking process at constant deceleration assuming that the contact pressure corresponds with the cover angle of the pad so that the moment of friction is equal in each case analysed. Evolutions and distributions of temperature both for the contact surface of the pad and the disc were computed and shown.

Rapid temperature change in components of the sliding systems induces thermal stresses due to thermal expansion. This effect is particularly evident in disc brakes working under high thermal loads. This paper deals with the finite element modelling of frictional heating process in disc brakes and clutches to study the temperature and stress distributions during operation.

Opis:
In this paper analytical solutions of the thermal problems of friction were received. The appropriate boundary-value problems of heat conduction were formulated and solved for a homogeneous semi–space (a brake disc) heated on its free surface by frictional heat fluxes with different and time-dependent intensities. Solutions were obtained in dimensionless form using Duhamel's theorem. Based on received solutions, evolution and spatial distribution of the dimensionless temperature were analyzed using numerical methods. The numerical results allowed to determine influence of the time distribution of friction power on the spatio-temporal temperature distribution in brake disc.

Opis:
This study is primarily focused on the investigation of an impact of heat transfer coefficient on heat dissipation from the solid disc using the finite element method (FEM). The analysis was carried out within four individual cases of braking of the passenger vehicle simulating mountain descent with different velocities and the following release periods, where the convective terms of cooling were dependent on the angular velocity of the disc. For the purpose of confronting contrasting conditions of the braking action, apart from heating region, the whole surface of the disc was insulated. The process was performed under the operation conditions of a real front disc brake, whose dimensions and thermophysical properties of materials were adopted and applied to the FE model. It was concluded that the influence of cooling of the exposed surfaces of the disc during relatively short braking is insignificant. However the period after brake release results in considerable decrease in temperature of the disc.

Opis:
Disc brakes in passenger cars are extremely important due to safety concerns. Their operational quality largely rests on the conditions of contact between the working elements, which mainly consists offlat and dry sliding. The tribological phenomena thatoccur during braking are, unfortunately, extremely complex and difficult to recreate in laboratory settings. Many scientific institutes conduct research to improve our understanding of these phenomena. The results they present make it possible to continuously simplify the procedures for selecting friction materials and reducing the costs of identifying the properties of new products. This article analyses the methods commonly used by researchers. It also presents different set-ups of research stations, as well as the advantages and drawbacks of each method.

In this paper nine of formulas (theoretical and experimental) for the heat partition ratio were employed to study the temperature distributions of two different geometrical types of the solid disc brake during emergency brake application. A two-dimensional finite element analysis incorporating specific values of the heat partition ratios was carried out. The boundary heat flux uniformly distributed over the circumference of a rubbing path to simulate the heat generated at the pad/disc interface was applied to the model. A number of factors over the heat partition ratio that affects the temperature fields are included and their importance is discussed.

Opis:
A transient thermal analysis is developed to examine temperature expansion in the disc and pad volume under simulated operation conditions of single braking process. This complex problem of frictional heating has been studied using finite element method (FEM). The Galerkin algorithm was used to discretize the parabolic heat transfer equation for the disc and pad. FE model of disc/pad system heating with respect to constant thermo-physical properties of materials and coefficient of friction was performed. The frictional heating phenomena with special reference to contact conditions was investigated. An axisymmetric model was used due to the proportional relation between the intensity of heat flux perpendicular to the contact surfaces and the rate of heat transfer. The time related temperature distributions in axial and radial directions are pre- sented. Evolution of the angular velocity and the contact pressure during braking was assumed to be nonlinear. Presented transient finite element analysis facilitates to determine temperature expansion in special conditions of thermal contact in axisymmetric model.
