Opis:
In New Zealand a peculiar language contact scenario has emerged from the mutual influence between the indigenous Māori language and English (cf. Benton 1985). Sharing the fate of many indigenous languages, Māori was overwhelmed by an imperial power but it was not eradicated. What remained of Māori was indisputably affected by English, but Māori also left its traces on the variety of English that developed in New Zealand. While the lexical influence of Māori on English has already been the subject of various studies, the impact of English on Māori still remains to be accounted for to a large extent (cf. Harlow 2004). This paper explores the presence of English lexical borrowings in Māori by analyzing the one thousand most frequent Māori words in the Māori Broadcast Corpus (Boyce 2006). In particular, the study will consider which types of English loans emerge among the core vocabulary of Māori and how these loans have been integrated in the language.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to look at the changes currently taking place in regards to the Basic Colour Term buí in Irish. Irish, a Celtic language, is, along with English, one of the official languages of Ireland although it is very much a minority one, with an overwhelming number of L2 speakers of varying linguistic ability. As a result of this, and the fact that the language itself is surrounded by a sea of English, English syntax and vocabulary—and its way of perceiving the world—is constantly being brought to bear on the language, and L1 speakers are continually being exposed to this and coming under its influence. One illustration of this is the Basic Colour Term buí. Traditionally, this term had its focus on ‘yellow’ but also covered ‘orange’ through light brown or ‘tan’. However, it is nowadays most frequently understood by L2 speakers as a one-to-one equivalent for the English term ‘yellow’, with oráiste‘orange’ and donn ‘brown’ being used, as in English, to cover those other shades that would traditionally be part of buí. To this end, I present results from field-work carried out amongst L1 native speakers of Irish to see how far this change has taken place in their own understanding of the language and how much the traditional Irish colour system is yielding to that of English.

Opis:
The paper discusses the range of complementation patterns available to regular action nominalizations in Irish and raises the issue of possible interference of English. Cross-linguistically, verbal nominalizations exhibit the process–result dichotomy, which is closely connected with the co-occurrence of NP and PP modifiers corresponding to event participants. In syntax-oriented accounts, such as Grimshaw (1990), Alexiadou (2001), Alexiadou and Grimshaw (2008), a distinction is made between Complex Event Nominals with an associated argument structure and Simple Event or Result Nominals which lack it. The basis for this classification is, among others, their ability to take obligatory arguments, license event-related PPs and the ability to pluralize. Doyle formulates a hypothesis that there may be some constraint in Irish “to the effect that nominalizations do not inherit the subcategorization frames of their verbal bases” (Doyle 2002: 101). In Grimshaw’s terms, this would amount to there being no Complex Event Nominals in Irish. This statement is argued to be too strong. However, it has to be conceded that verbal nominals characterized by a greater affinity to their source verbs are hard to come by, though not impossible, in Traditional Late Modern Irish and that they are more readily attested in Non-Traditional Late Modern Irish, i.e. in a variety influenced by English and L2 speakers of Irish (Ó Béarra 2007)

Opis:
The main goal of the paper is to answer the questions whether Frisian can be referred to as an endangered language and if it managed to survive the constant influence of the surrounding larger cultures and languages. The first point to be analyzed is the geographic distribution of Frisian. The second issue to be considered is the historical and present cultural and social status of the Frisian language. The third matter to be analysed is the lexical variety of Frisian language and its complexity, which made its survival possible. The article takes the diachronic perspective and expounds upon all the mentioned factors and their role in the preservation of Frisian until today. The paper presents an analysis of Frisian along Fishman’s Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (GIDS), its extended and modified version offered by Lewis and Simons (EGIDS) and the UNESCO’s ‘Language Vitality and Endangerment framework’ (LVE) guidelines (2003).

Opis:
Contact-induced language change is pervasive in contexts involving historically minoritized languages, where social contexts are not particularly conducive to equitable intergroup relations. Empirically driven studies involving these language contexts allow us to more thoroughly understand the social and cognitive processes that lead to language change. Paradoxically, empirical data on minoritized languages is relatively scarce and expensive to generate. But in the digital age we have the ability to look beyond the traditional data types used in language studies, like spoken data gathered under fieldwork conditions, literature, etc. In this paper, I will explore the potential utility of user-created wiki data in investigating Polish influence on the Kashubian language.

Korean is spoken by around 75 million individuals in South Korea, North Korea, China, Japan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. The relationship between Korean and other languages is not precisely known; however, several etymologists believe it to be an individual tongue from the Altaic group of languages. Human mobility and access to global information cause the interaction between one language and another, thus giving the possibility of loanwords in the native language. The Korean language is also the type of language in which many loanwords can be found. In Korean there are numerous loanwords from English. Nowadays the young Korean generation use Konglish, which is an Interlanguage consisting of English and Korean words. Konglish contains Korean lexical items with English loanwords nativized into Korean. English words used in daily conversation, advertising, and entertainment are included and seen as fashionable. However, usage of this type can frequently give rise to misunderstandings due to issues of sentence structure or vocabulary.

Anthropological Linguistics

Opis:
The idea for this text was dictated by the need to develop a comprehensive taxonomy of Language Anthropology, and in particular the place occupied by Anthropological Linguistics in this classification. The first extensive attempts to determine the exact place that Anthropological Linguistics occupies in this taxonomy were presented over a decade ago (Chruszczewski 2010, 2011), and they were later developed and modified (Chruszczewski 2018). The present classification of Anthropological Linguistics is based upon the current state of knowledge and above all on research undertaken in numerous scientific centers around the world where it is obvious that language is an integral part of human culture and it is recognized that both of the phenomena influence each other and that the most reliable results can be obtained by studying language and culture simultaneously. It goes without saying that scholars are thinking, hard-working and creative beings. Therefore, the increase and updating of knowledge, including research fields and disciplines, is very large and takes place very quickly. Many working research ideas from not so far ago are already recognized and autonomous scientific disciplines. Hence, I share the opinion of those researchers who believe that from time to time it is necessary to modernize, re-describe and explain anew the classification of the disciplines in which we work, so that the readers of our works can see how we ourselves understand the discipline of our core research. On the one hand the following classification of Anthropological Linguistics can be seen as exactly this kind of explanation of how the author of the paper understands this research field, and on the other hand it can be seen also as an open invitation for discussion.

Opis:
Malta is a small European island with over 440,000 citizens inhabiting the area of 316 square kilometers. Despite the geographical restriction, Malta has a highly interesting linguistic situation. Throughout the centuries, Malta was conquered and inhabited by numerous nations. In consequence, Maltese developed in the situations of constant language contact, which is traceable in the sounds recalling Arabic as well as the weaving of Italian and English phrases (Brincat 2006). The characteristic language contact situation is pending: since 1964 Malta has both Maltese and English as its official languages. Considering that Maltese does not have plenty of speakers and is not a widely spread language, it could be assumed that the present linguistic tendency on the island, especially among the young, would lean towards the usage of the current global language, which is English. Such a tendency among the young generation would imply the beginning of an end for the Maltese language. Nevertheless, the questionnaire conducted among a group of students of the University of Malta indicates that there is no such threat. All of the respondents point to Maltese as their native language and use it on a daily basis when talking with friends, family members and doctors. English is mostly used when counting, reading scholarly papers or watching TV. Interestingly enough, Italian, which was an official language of Malta till 1934, is still quite popular among the young. As far as the attitudes are concerned, English is considered as highly useful but inferior to Maltese.Knowledge of the language is thought to be significant for numerous reasons, yet it does not make the person speaking it more educated or intelligent as it used to. The researched group is small; however, it indicates some general tendencies in the area, which should be further researched.

Opis:
The authors of the book are focused on the field of creolinguistics: a relatively new but rapidly developing domain of science located within the frameworks of anthropological linguistics. The main aim of the book is to describe thoroughly the location of creolinguistics, in general, from the viewpoint of anthropological linguistics, and in particular, analyzing the key concepts and entire methodological apparatus used by creolinguists. In the first chapters, an outline focused on a new taxonomy of linguistic anthropology is proposed with a particular place given to creolinguistics. In the following chapters, a precise study of the main components of creolinguistics, as well as its theoretical background and numerous references to practical examples are given. Finally, in a broad section, an extensive list of the literature focused on creolinguistics, as well as three types of indexes are delivered. All in all, the comprehensive knowledge contained within, broadly explained with numerous references to real life examples and vivid language, makes this book an excellent academic work which may be used by both processional linguists and students interested in broadening their horizons. Moreover, equally important is the fact that this is the first academic book focused on creolinguistics fully in Polish which makes it both a unique and fundamental work for further generations of linguists.
