Opis:: Infectious diseases, at the interface between wild animals and livestock, have been observed and studied for decades. Recently, there has been an upsurge in our understanding of the epidemiology of multi-host infections and availability of better diagnostic tools. Many diseases, affecting livestock, have already been identified in wildlife, especially in wild ungulates. Numerous factors, most anthropogenic, have facilitated the emergence of diseases from wildlife. Increasing interactions between wildlife, humans and domestic animals may always result in disease emergence, that requires innovative strategies for disease surveillance and management in wildlife. The frequency of emergence and reemergence of infectious diseases in wildlife reservoirs has recently increased. That is posing new questions about diseases pathogenesis and epidemiology and is heightening the urgency of finding effective wildlife disease management. The goal for disease management in wildlife is to develop efficacious ways to accomplish standard animal disease management practices of vaccination, therapy, quarantine, surveillance, testing and slaughter, or depopulation, when needed. This article provides the most comprehensive overview of the knowledge on infectious diseases at the wildlife–livestock interface. Furthermore, the risk factors associated with interactions between wild and domestic animals, regarding emerging infectious diseases are summarized.

Opis:: The transmission of pathogens between wildlife and livestock is globally recognized as a threat to the livestock industry, as well as to humans health. The frequency of emerging (and re‑emerging) infectious diseases has increased, posing new questions about their epidemiology and wildlife reservoirs. Anthropogenic landscape modifications create new interfaces between livestock and wildlife, potentially exacerbating processes that favor pathogens transmission. Deer and roe-deer can serve as reservoirs for a number of bacteria, viruses, and parasites, transmissible to humans and domestic animals through direct interactions through contaminated food or indirectly, through contaminated environment. Transmission of the diseases by cervids, could also negatively impact their effective control, management or eradication resulting in prolonged epidemics in the livestock. This article presents major issues on the increasing risks for both, farm animals and humans, resulting from the infectious diseases transmission from the wildlife reservoirs.

Opis:: The aim of this study was to present the current situation of trichinellosis, basing on the results of examination of the tissues of animals hunted in Poland. Investigation was carried out from 1st January to 30th June 2022 in the Department of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases of National Veterinary Research Institute in Poland. Samples were collected out of 103 wild boars (Sus scrofa) and one wolf (Canis lupus), originating from 14 voivodeships. The study of wild boars muscle tissues revealed 89 positive samples, including 60 T. spiralis, 21 T. britovi, two T. pseudospiralis, and five mixed invasions with T. spiralis and T. britovi. In one case no amplification products were obtained. T. britovi was also found in the sample of wolf muscle tissue. This study emphasize the fact that trichinellosis in hunting animals is still a zoonotic threat, and should be closely monitored.

Opis:: This article presents the issues of the wild animal welfare, basing on the example of the deer family members, implemented by hunters as part of the conducted hunting management and individual selection, focused on the lack of undesirable individuals. This way of managing renewable natural resources seems to be rational, as it creates the possibility of using the population of individual species on the principles of sustainable development. It allows to regulate population structure, mainly its density and gender and age structures, which directly affect aspects related to animal welfare. At the same time, it was proposed to assess the welfare of wild animals through a modified principle of the five freedoms applicable to pets. Due to behavioral specifics, as well as living conditions and fulfilling basic life functions, such assessment should be based on the “principle of six groups of activities”, performed as part of managing individual populations. Meeting the guidelines resulting from the proposed principle, should ensure optimal conditions for the welfare of wild animals, as well as set out research directions for the assessment of their welfare.

Opis:: This papers presents the issues of the rights of wild animals and their property rights in terms of the idea of dereification. From the time of antiquity, animals had virtually no rights, and in terms of jurisprudence they were treated as things. A breakthrough in this respect was the theory of Jeremy Bentham, according to which animals were empowered in a way. This theory became the basis for the development of modern laws and codes. However, dereification itself did not really improve the fate of animals and should be treated in ideological rather, than legal terms. Nevertheless, the newly introduced regulations significantly influenced the human-animal relationship, and consequently strengthened, at least partially, the principles of humane treatment, and at the same time certainly contributed to the abolition of the practices of cruelty towards animals. The empowerment of animals however, did not change the categorization of their property, both in the free state and after recovery, regardless of its form.
