Opis:
The aim of the article is to publish and discuss the late Roman solidus of Theodosius II (408-450), found in 2018 in the vicinity of the village of Prełuki, Komańcza commune, Sanok County. The coin was found randomly by treasure hunters, eventually recovered and donated to the Historical Museum of Sanok by Robert Fedyk. It is the second find of a late Roman solidus in the Upper San River basin. Several years ago a solidus of Valentinian III (425-455) had been found in Prusiek, Sanok County. Both coins belong to the early Migration Period finds horizon in this area. This consists of few bronze buckles, a sword, and fragments of a Hunnic cauldron finds. In all likelihood, the solidi found their way into the Upper San River basin as a consequence of the Hunnic-Germanic relations. They should be also treated as a part of the latest wave of Roman coins arriving in the present Lesser Poland area in the 5th century AD.

Opis:
The aim of the analysis of Theodosius’ II solid was to determine the chemical compounds of the coin alloy and to conduct a traseological analysis. The results show that the fineness of gold of which the coin was made was very high (obverse: 99,16% which means 23,8 karat gold and reverse of 99,20% which constitutes for the 23,81 karat gold), and the alloy metal was silver (0,65% and 0,62%). Traseological analysis has shown, that the hole in the lower part of the obverse, 2,1 mm in the diameter, was drilled with a very sharp, narrow, conical tool, the marks of which are still visible on the inside of the hole. Also, some traces of work concerning the coin’s die have been spotted. The engraving of the die was done gradually. Traces of consequent scratching with a graver are well visible both on the obverse and reverse. The character of places where sharp edges framing letters and some images are preserved serve proof of those being prepared with the use of a narrow, triangular-ended graver. All this suggests, that the maker of the die had a developed set of technical and artistic skills.

Opis:
Praca dotyczy badania temperatur przemian fazowych (temperatur solidus i likwidus) z użyciem różnych metod analizy termicznej. Podano ocenę krzywych nagrzewanie/chłodzenie DTA i DSC. Porównano i omówiono uzyskane temperatury solidus i likwidus.
The paper deals with the study of phase transition temperatures (solidus and liquidus temperatures) with the use of different thermal analysis methods. Currently, the key thermal analysis methods are DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and ‘direct’ thermal analysis (TA). The study presents the basic principles of these methods, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and results obtained with these three very often used methods. There paper presents results from the high temperature region (above 1000°C) with the focus on the melting and solidifying region of real steel grade – multicomponent alloy. The paper discusses results obtained with the three mentioned methods at heating/cooling process, with different loads of analysed samples and other factors that can influence the obtained results. The evaluation of heating/cooling curves, DTA and DSC – curves at heating and cooling is demonstrated. The obtained solidus and liquidus temperatures are compared and discussed.

This paper analyses the changes in the level of infection with the freshwater parasite Schistocephalus solidus of the three-spined stickleback from the Gdynia Marina. Environmental factors such as salinity, pollution and eutrophication or the presence of other species affect the transmission of parasites. Infection indices have been increasing since the 1990s. Differences in the infection level of morphological forms were also found: this may be due to their environmental preferences.

Opis:
The number of new, amateur finds of Roman coins have been increasing rapidly in recent years. Researchers generally agree that coins from amateur finds are fully legitimate numismatic sources. It is estimated that non-archaeologists made no less than 90% of old discoveries of Roman coins from the area of central Barbaricum. This is also true for the beginning of the 21st century. The disadvantage of this situation lies in the fact that the lack of information about the context of most of the amateur finds significantly decrease their source value for archaeology. However, the mass representation of the material is a big advantage. In order to obtain more data on new discoveries from Poland, it was necessary to develop a project that would allow for collecting anonymous information about finds of Roman coins. The scheme of action was thus based on two kinds of activities. One of them involved searching information about the new discoveries of coins on the Internet and then expanding and verifying these data. The other involved propagating the project of recording finds as wide as it was possible in order to encourage finders to pass as much information about their discoveries as possible. During the realisation of the project, from May 2004 to November 2007, the number of 518 pieces of anonymous information had been gathered. This material comprised of 1,028 Roman coins from 448 finds. Among the newly reported finds, there were: 11 treasures and 437 small finds (113 group finds and 324 single finds). Basing on the collected data, we may assume that single finds of Roman coins are relatively rare in Poland, which can mean that they usually appear in a broader archaeological context. Unfortunately, in most cases we have no information about the context whatsoever. Some interesting observations on the collected material are worth mentioning here: • Republican denarii quite frequently occurred in small finds; • Denarii subaeratii also occurred quite frequently; we may assume that no less than 10 percent of all small finds of Roman denarii in Poland were in fact denarii subaeratii; • Three hoards similar to Drzewicz hoard were discovered in the basin of Bzura river, which may suggest that there were “Drzewicz type” hoards in that area; • The example of four hoards found in the Polish Jura suggests that hoards deposited on this territory in the Migration Period often contained a number of denarii and jewelry, including gold coins adapted for pendants. General methods of critical approach to such new material are still being developed, since information regarding the coins and the circumstances of their discovery happened sometimes to be, no matter if intentionally or not, false or distorted. Registration activities were continued in 2008 which resulted in capturing two important single finds: a siliqua of Constantius II discovered in a field in the village Prusice (commune Złotoryja) and a solidus of Arcadius found in a field in Rotmanka in the suburbs of Gdansk (6 figures, 2 tables).

Opis:
The Numismatics Department of the National Museum of Ukrainian History has in its keeping a little-known, but at the same time quite extensive and extremely interesting collection of ancient coins. Its core is formed by a collection which originally belonged to King Stanislaus Augustus. In its day it was the most magnificent Polish collection of coins and medals of recognized European rank. The collection went through rather complicated changes of fortune: e.g., by way of the Volhyn High School in Krzemieniec and Vilnius University it finally found it way to Kyïv. There it was initially kept at the University of Saint Vladimir as a part of coin room (Paweł Jarkowski, former librarian of the Krzemieniec High School was its organizor and keeper). Then it passed by the way of Peczersk Lavra to the National Museum of Ukrainian History. Until the Bolshevik Revolution it continued to grow, first through donations and acquisitions, and then also thanks to coins from excavations. Piercing or adding suspension loops was typical of gold Roman coins in the territory of Barbaricum, particularly those associated with the Dancheny-Brangstrup archaeological horizon (which linked the region of the lower Danube with Denmark by the way of Wielbark and Cherniakhiv cultures). These additional elements, as well as the domination of denarii from the time of the Antonines in the bulk of silver coins in the Kyïv collection, indicate that a part of this collection must have originated from local finds in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later from the area of Volhyn and Ukraine at large. Unfortunately, due to the fact that a vast part of the archives regarding the collection had perished or cannot be traced and the collection itself had become completely disorganised by numerous relocations and putting into hiding, it is usually impossible to establish provenance of specimens. There are, however, exceptions to this rule, and one of them is a quaternio of Licinius discussed in the article. Similarly, it is often difficult to determine whether the individual coins belonged to the collection of Stanislaus Augustus, or were acquainted later in Krzemieniec or Kyïv. Some of them must have been described in detail in handwritten catalogs prepared by F. Skarbek-Rudzki in the Volhyn High School in Krzemieniec and P. Jarkowski in the University of Vilnius. So far, these manuscripts have not been located in Kyïv archives. Some specimens from the Kyïv collection, especially the unique ones, can still be linked with J. Ch. Albertrandi’s descriptions of coins from the collection of Stanislaus Augustus. It is the case of four unique coins: an aureus of Septimius Severus, medallions of Valerianus and Licinius I and solidus of Valentinianus II; these specimens kept now in Kyïv colection must originate from the collection of the last Polish King (4 figures).
