Opis:
The article analyses the structure and functions of seventy-three titles extracted from the first Polish-language popular-science journal, i.e. Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone. It was determined that the examined titles included both uninomial and binomial titles (25) as well as multinomial ones (48). Uninomial titles relate only to relatively short texts whose publication fell within a single issue of the journal. Long texts, divided into several parts and published in subsequent issues of the journal, had multinomial titles. The analysed titles (just as in the case of the titles of strictly-scientific modern articles) fulfilled the informative and substantial function. However, they did not perform the pragmatic and persuasive functions typical of the headlines present in modern popular-science press.

Opis:
Although Kraków is regarded as the cradle of Polish press (Merkuriusz Polski dzieje wszystkiego świata w sobie zamykający dla informacyjej pospolitej was the first printed and systematically published newspaper, from January 3rd to May 5th, 1661), its role in the history of Polish journalism had been very small until the beginning of the 19th century. Before the establishment of the Free City of Kraków (or the Republic of Kraków) in June 1815, several periodicals – most of them short-lived – were published by printers or book dealers. The role of professors of the Academy was important here. The publishing activity was inaugurated by Feliks Radwański (1756–1826), an alumnus of the Academy which he was associated with for many years. In order to promote his ideas, Radwański published, in 1806–1807, at his own expense, Dziennik Gospodarski Krakowski. It was the first paper of its kind in the history of the Polish periodical press. The author wrote about the application of plaster in bricklaying, about the cultivation of potatoes (until then unknown in our country), about new agricultural tools, farming, and the necessity of establishing agricultural schools. These pro posals were premature, too modern to fi nd followers willing to utilize them in middle-sized farms. This was the reason why Radwański discontinued this interesting publication. Jerzy Samuel Bandtkie, who published Kraków’s fi rst historical journal, Miscellanea Cracoviensia in 1814–1815, is, however, considered to be the pioneer of periodical press in Kraków. He also published Rozmaitości Naukowe in 1828–1829 and 1831. Antoni Z. Helcel published Kwartalnik Naukowy (1835–1836), regarded by scholars as the best periodical specializing in the humanities. Rocznik Towarzystwa Naukowego z Uniwersytetem Krakowskim Połączonego (1817–1872) is worth mentioning among academic journals.

In the text entitled “Press advertising – varieties and sub-varieties. Methods of promoting the press”, the author discusses press advertising, which is a fast developing mass-media phenomenon. Modernity has granted press advertising a high quality of print and paper, as well as Infinite possibilities of combining various promotional forms with the press. The author argues that press advertising is one of the best ways in which a company can communicate with the market. Its advantage is, above all, a high frequency of distributing the contents and the possibility of conveying accurate advertising information in vast quantities.

Polish political press (1918–1939)
digitised press
Opis:
Digital libraries provide an easy and convenient source of data for journalistic academic research. In this paper, the author answers the question of whether the most well-known socio-political Polish press titles published between 1918 and 1939 are available online and to what extent they are fully digitised and accessible in digital libraries. Through media content analysis and the press content analysis methods of Walery Pisarek, all the digital resources available for an ordinary Internet user were browsed. The main role of the analysis was to establish which journals and periodicals were published weekly and as daily newspapers. Also, the nature and political leanings of press publications were taken into consideration (each press title was usually associated with a particular party). At the same time, the texts were profiled as regional, national, Catholic, etc. Finally, an attempt to develop a typology of the given titles is made.

Particular attention was paid to the features of the handwritten press and their relationship to the structure of their texts. The press rumour was shown as an informative genre specific to this type of press, responding to the communication needs of the audience. The analysis of the rumour texts focuses on genre-specific indicators, particularly those indicating the degree of reliability of the information.

The Polish film press in the first half of the 20th century (1913-1939) tried to find its place in the Polish publishing market. Inspired by film thought and still developing Polish and global cinematography, the Polish press wanted to uphold true art. However, the times of censorship, interference of state authorities, fragile publishing politics, and omnipresent commercialism have all strongly influenced the history of the Polish film press. The article mainly presents the history and characteristics of film journals, dividing them into those loyal to the art of cinematography, as well as those that have been commercially influenced by film in general. It describes their profiles, forms, language, as well as editorial policy of individual editorial offices used to get valuable readers.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to describe and evaluate the changes that took place in the weekly Przekrój from the year 2000 to the end of its publication in 2013. Eighty-three editions from the years 2000 to 2013 are included in the analysis. After a brief introduction encompassing relevant facts concerning the history of the weekly magazine, formal changes (policies, typography, electronic distribution) to the magazine and its content are analysed. The transformation of Przekrój after 2000 is the most extensively discussed aspect, as this period in the magazine’s existence was considered to be the beginning of regular and sweeping changes in its formula. The article is an attempt to construct a hypothesis about the changes which contributed to the disappearance of the weekly magazine from the market. The aim of this analysis is to indicate the reasons for the crisis of one of the most popular and longest-running weekly magazines in Poland.

Opis:
The system and practices of both German censorship in Norway in 1940–1945 and of Soviet censorship in Estonia in 1944–1990 were, because of their totalitarian nature, very similar. Some aspects of the reorganisation of the press in Norway and Estonia after the shift to freedom of expression are compared. In both countries freedom of the press released a high level of activity in publishing, attracting a lot of new and untrained journalists to the field. This created a generational shift , if not a cleavage, between old hands and neophytes. Since the younger generation was more numerous, the transition also implied tensions and ambiguities between different ideas of profes- sional practices and values. When media began to consolidate in both countries, the job market be- came more competitive and journalists found themselves under commercial pressures and, somewhat paradoxically, in the same process became more professionalized. In Norway the old multi-party press re-emerged after a short while together with old routines from the mid-war period. In Estonia, the old Soviet press system was replaced with completely different one, based on private ownership and ruled by the free market.

The article addresses the issue of the meaning of student editorial practice in teaching in journalism degree programs. It aims to discuss theoretical matters related to this kind of extra-formal activity and to present a specific example of how a student press editorial office functions at the University of Szczecin. The author’s interest is focused around the benefits that accrue from this kind of student activity regarding the acquisition of knowledge, practical skills and soft competences, as well as shaping attitudes indispensable in their future work in the media. In the initial theoretical part of the article, the assumptions of modern teaching in journalism programs were discussed with a reference to models of teaching that function in European countries, with the significant role of practical teaching of journalism skills also indicated. The latter part of the article is a specific case study that includes a closer look at the ways of implementing student editorial activities conducted simultaneously with the content of the study program. The analysis covers general assumptions, organization of work in an editorial office, a description of the publishing activity of an editorial office and the issue of student press in the space of the new media. Moreover, an attempt was made to assess the effectiveness of the conducted activities. In conclusion, the author states that being active in student media may constitute a valuable complement to obligatory student apprenticeships and allow students to perfect their journalism skills on an ongoing basis throughout the course of studies.

Opis:
Women’s press in the Pomeranian publishing market in the interwar period constituted a new, or even experimental, phenomenon. Local editorial o¢ ces quickly noticed the opportunities women’s press provided. By the end of the 1920s there had been issued eight titles of women’s press – all in the forms of supplements. The next decade brought another five titles – including two independent periodicals. Women’s press supplements were issued by the press bodies of all the most important political parties in the province: „Gazeta Grudziądzka” („Dobra Gospodyni”), „Słowo Pomorskie” („Dom Rodzinny”), „Dzień Pomorski” („Women’s Movement in Pomerania”). The analysis of the content of the supplements and women’s magazines issued in the Pomeranian Province showed that they could be divided into three types: presenting a woman as a housewife, a quasi-modern woman, and an active woman. The types frequently overlapped each other. The Pomeranian press for women did not differ greatly from the titles issued in other regions of Poland. It continued to view a woman as a mother, wife and caretaker of hearth and home.
