Opis:
This article is an attempt to analyze the functions, which Piotr Skarga gives in parts of Żywoty świetych focused on the martyrdom of Jesuits. Their biographies can be considered as the argument in the current debate on true and false martyrdom. Skarga, referring to the authority of The Bible and the works of the Church fathers, tried to prove that only the Catholic martyrs are the true ones. Persecutions of Jesuits in England, France, and during the missions to India and to the Americas are also an opportunity for Skarga to show how groundless the allegations are against the Jesuits. In the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, they were accused of pernicious influence on king’s political decisions and greed. Author of Żywoty świętych, using the examples from the life and martyrdom of Jesuits attempted to rehabilitate the opinion of his order.

The article presents both the formal aspects of the poetics of Tuwim’s pamphlets (enumeration, hyperbole, grotesque, irony) and the figures of those who are the targets of his satirical addresses. Tuwim used verse satires to create polemical and ironic portraits of individual people (the main figure being a nationalist journalist and literary critic Stanisław Pieńkowski) as well as to ridicule state institutions, ideologies and political parties. The author also analyses pamphlet-like lyrical poems, columns and literary criticism by Julian Tuwim. In conclusion the author describes some elements of the cultural milieu which the poet refers to in his satirical writing (popular culture and the media, totalitarian ideologies, mass-society).

The polemical article addresses and questions the findings and determinations given by Zamącińska, who treats Norwid’s poetry as heavily marked emotionally which, according to the literary researcher and scholar, is decisive in assigning the poet to the generation of Romantics. Questioning the arguments given by Zamącińska, the present author points at a considerable decrease in individualism and direct expression in the writings of Norwid in favour of the so-called “quidamization”, i.e. a forming process of underdetermined man and “one of the may”. Concurrently, emotions find their way to the poetical image co-created by the description in which general notions constitute a substantial component. The poetics of conditionality, sensitivity to the changeability of the world and the momentous character of reality, and at the same time sensitivity to light, sphericity and multicolourness of poetical space are decisive in attributing the artistic workshop of Norwid to the aesthetics of the second half of the nineteenth century.

Aim. The proposed study examines the subversive polemics of Fo’s theatre which serves as a catalyst for social, political and cultural change. It aims to foreground the revolutionary politics of Fo who uses theatre to combat the oppressive system bringing to fore the working-class struggle for a classless society. The present study will be done with the help of the analysis of Fo’s select plays. These plays will be interpreted using the Gramscian framework of cultural consensus, an enabling provision of authority and control and the role of intellectuals in countering the same. Concept. The paper underlines the significance of art in facilitating a deeper understanding of the complex social realities of our world. The paper engages with the question of power and control, oppression and marginalisation as well as art and education as contextualised in Dario Fo’s theatre. Results. Fo’s use of drama to humanize the history of Italian working classes tells us about the expedience of art to enage with matters most urgent. This tells us that art and culture can be an important link in the mobilization authoritarism. Conclusion. A comprehensive discussion on power politics is presented in the paper with the aim of keeping people informed of the subtle working of these underlying structures which govern power relations in society. Originality. The originality of the study is contingent on investigating into how power is acquired, legitimised, practised, and maintained, how it can be resisted and what role art and artists play in the construction, dissemination and opposition of it.

Autobiograficzna twórczość Sławomira Mrożka, obejmująca pokaźne dzienniki z lat 1962-1989 oraz obszerne tomy korespondencji, wciąż otwarta jest na nowe odczytania. Ponieważ kluczowym – a nieopisanym do tej pory – problemem w jej warstwie metaliterackiej jest relacja do Witolda Gombrowicza jako twórcy i człowieka, w artykule dokonano historycznoliterackiej i komparatystycznej analizy i interpretacji wieloletniej polemiki z estetycznymi i filozoficznymi poglądami autora Ferdydurke, prowadzonej przez Mrożka w dziennikach od 1965 do 1987 roku. Podkreślono procesualny charakter autorskich odniesień – od pełnej szacunku akceptacji do zdecydowanego przezwyciężenia wpływu Gombrowicza – których finałem było otwarcie Mrożka na metafizykę, nieobecną w światopoglądzie mistrza. Wskazano na szczególną rolę twórczości Gombrowicza, będącej dla Mrożka lustrem, w którym pewności i kształtu nabierało jego myślenie o sobie jako artyście i własnej sztuce.
The autobiographical works of Sławomir Mrożek, which include his extensive diaries from the years 1962–1989 and large volumes of correspondence, continue to be open to new readings. Since the key, and until now undescribed problem in the meta literary layer is the relation to Witold Gombrowicz as an artist and as a human being, the paper analyses and interprets, from a historical literary and comparative point of view, the multi annual polemics with the aesthetic and philosophical views of the author of Ferdydurke, which Mrożek conducted in his diaries from 1965 to 1987. The process based nature of the author’s references is emphasised: from respectful acceptance to the decisive overcoming of Gombrowicz’s influence, ending in the opening of Mrożek towards metaphysics, absent from his master’s worldview. The particular role of Gombrowicz’s work is pointed out as a mirror for Mrożek, where Mrożek’s reflection on himself as an artist and on his own art took shape and gained confidence.

The paper deals with a famous critical controversy of Poland’s interbellum period, the polemic about what Karol Irzykowski called “nonunderstandableness,” stirred up by his article Niezrozumialstwo (1924). Begun on the pages of the weekly “Wiadomości Literackie”, the controversy continued in other periodicals in essays by eminent writers and critics of the time (including T. Peiper, J. Przyboś, S. I. Witkiewicz, J. Ujejski, J.N. Miller, J. Hulewicz and J. Brzękowski) until the outbreak of the World War II. Its importance in the history of the nation’s literary criticism between the wars consists not only in that it promoted the category of “nonunderstandableness”, which has since then become an essential “figure of the reading” of the literary texts of that period (W. Bolecki), but also in Irzykowski’s penetrating campaign employing this category, which diagnosed and exposed the recondite affinity of the literary aesthetic principles and strategies of Young Poland and the later avant-garde. The aim of the paper is to explain Irzykowski’s attitude within this controversy: (1) to identify the personal and abstract, explicitly and implicitly named targets of his attack; (2) to place the category of “nonunderstandableness” within the system of the writer’s opinions from the area of literary criticism; and (3) to interpret the paradoxical manner in which he conducted his critical dispute.

The aim of this paper is to present a fragment of Wykład nabożny piosnki „Salve Regina” (A pious interpretation of the song “Salve Regina”), a ca. mid-16th-century manuscript by Jerzy Argiglobyn, in the context of the Reformation by means of a lexical and semantic analysis of the sequative names (Lat. nomina sequativa) and proper names occurring there. The selection of the fragment was determined by the fact that, on the one hand, it is the essence of the discussed manuscript as a polemic work, which arises from the accumulation of references to the Reformation, and on the other hand, this fragment is the most problematic one when it comes to a lexical and semantic analysis. The author of the manuscript, when referring to the Reformation, enumerates the names of the theologians associated with it and mentions the places important to the new faith and the followers of the proliferating Reformation denominations. He provides each piece of such information in a manner presenting it in a negative, at times even insulting, light.

In more general terms, the dispute is over the issue of the incomprehensible nature of poetry. The most heated stages of the discussion reveal the basic and repeated arguments put forward by both parties, as well as  the differences in the perspectives and points of reference, indicating the changes which occurred in literature in the meantime.

Antun Gustav Matoš is the father of the Croatian literary polemics. By confronting his con- temporaries, he shaped a unique style of polemicizing which is characterized by straight- forwardness, wit, elegance of speech and artistry. This style is based on various procedures which Matoš used in his polemics as well as on different textual patterns through which he articulated his polemical thought. The paper descibes and exemplifi es seven stylistic proce- dures (portraying in oposition, polemical quote, polemical naming, polemical verb, polemical maxim, word play, polemical point) and eight textual patterns (literary criticism, fi ctitious dialogue, comical story, polemical poem, aphorism, drama, polemical epistle). The opulence of Matoš’s style produces a polemics which is both carnevalesque and fi ctional. He brings together what is seemingly incompatible – the polemics which is based on the truth principle and fi ction which is essentially indifferent towards that principle.

The author of the article focuses on introducing and interpreting the dispute over Slavic philosophy that took place in the 1840s in Slovak magazines (between J.M. Hurban, C. Zoch and P.Kellner-Hostinský). This dispute is an important testimony of the era, it concerned the fundamental issues of the time: the identity of Slovak culture, its philosophical background, its place and role in the Slavic world, its attitude to tradition. The author of the article focused primarily on two aspects of the “slovanská veda” project: the relation to German philosophy and the key cognitive category “viďeňja.” The author also points to the role that this dispute played in shaping the model of Slovak culture. Since the Slovak Romantic literary discourse has recently been enriched by many new revisions, the author also briefly refers, sometimes polemically, to the latest research.

Analizuję retorykę sporu między Karolem Irzykowskim i Witkacym, traktując polemiczne wypowiedzi jako wyraz skrywanych resentymentalnych uprzedzeń. Spór ten interpretuję jako pojedynek dwóch nieuznanych intelektualistów, oskarżających się o anachronizm i przyznających sobie miano prekursora. W psychomachii Irzykowskiego i Witkacego podkreślam nieustanne wykraczanie obu pisarzy poza normy etyczne artystycznego sporu, przez nich samych postulowane.
This essay offers an analysis of the rhetoric of the dispute between Irzykowski and Witkacy that takes into account both artists’ strong statements of opinions as an indication of their hidden recurring resentments. In the essay, the dispute is interpreted as a duel between two unrecognised intellectuals accusing each other of anachronisms and honouring themselves with a label of a precursor. What is more, the author of the essay points out how the nature of this psychomachy-like dispute manifests itself with a constant violation of by and large accepted ethical norms of an artistic dispute of which the two were eager proponents.

The article presents the major hypotheses concerning the emergence of the 364-day calendar within Judaism and the related calendrical controversy, which presumably caused the separation of a certain group of Jews, known to us as the Qumran Community, from the temple cult in Jerusalem. It is not known whether the 364-day calendar tradition is older than that of the Astronomical Book, or whether the adoption of this tradition was accompanied by conflicts. The Qumran texts do not provide unequivocal evidence for any calendrical polemics. The only witness to these polemics is The Book of Jubilees, copies of which were found in the Qumran library. However, the Qumran Community itself did not share the radical line of The Book of Jubilees, which condemns reliance on the moon in time-keeping. The 364-day calendar is presumed to have been a distinctive feature of the Qumran Community, which however did not arouse any controversies within Second Temple Judaism.

Artykuł stanowi odpowiedź na głosy krytyki w zakresie kluczowych kwestii z punktu widzenia celów nowelizacji Kodeksu postępowania cywilnego. W tekście zwrócono uwagę na ratio legis przywrócenia odrębnego postępowania w sprawach gospodarczych, co nastąpiło z dniem 7 listopada 2019 r., kiedy to obowiązywać zaczęła zasadnicza nowelizacja Kodeksu postępowania cywilnego z dnia 4 lipca 2019 r. Wskazano, że obowiązujące od dnia 3 maja 2012 r. do wejścia w życie omawianej nowelizacji przepisy nie sprawdziły się oraz generowały liczne problemy. W dalszej części zmierzono się z krytyką niektórych praktyków i teoretyków kwestionujących rozwiązania przyjęte przez ustawodawcę. Polemika została podjęta w szczególności w zakresie zagadnienia sprawy gospodarczej, postrzegania przedsiębiorcy, czy kognicji sądów (wydziałów) gospodarczych.
The article is a response to criticism regarding the key issues, from the point of view of the objectives of the amendment to the Code of Civil Procedure. The text highlights the ratio legis of the restoration of separate proceedings in commercial cases, which took place on 7th November 2019, when the fundamental part of amendment to the Code of Civil Procedure from 4th July 2019 became effective. It was indicated that the provisions in force from 3rd May 2012 until the entry into force of 160 the amendment in question, did not work out and generated numerous problems. Later, criticism of some practitioners and theorists who questioned the solutions adopted by the legislator was challenged. The polemic was mainly raised with regard to the issue of economic matters, the perception of an entrepreneur and the jurisdiction of economic courts (departments).
