Physical Therapy Congress
Opis:
Between 1 and 4 May 2015, I participated in the World Confederation for Physical Therapy Congress (WCPT) 2015 in Singapore. The Congress took place at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, and attracted 3500 attendants. In total, 572 oral reports were given and 1578 posters were presented. Furthermore, 25 focused symposia, 11 panel discussions, 18 seminars and 36 networking session were organised. The level of discussions varied. I found the reports concerning the application of new post-stroke rehabilitation methods to be the most interesting, and especially the session entitled ‘Best practice for arm recovery post-stroke: an international application’, presented by Professors Steven Wolf from Atlanta, Gert Kwakkel from Amsterdam, Mark Bayley from Toronto and Michelle McDonnell from Adelaide. At the poster session, I presented a study entitled ‘Effects of gait training with partial body-weight support (PBWS) in the early stage after a stroke – a preliminary report’ (by Jarosław Szczygieł and Józef Opara). The World Confederation for Physical Therapy brings together approximately 23 thousand physical therapists from all over the world. It was announced that the outgoing WCPT President, Marilyn Moffat, has been succeeded by Emma Stokes from Dublin. The next congress will be held between 2 and 4 July 2017 in Cape Town.

Opis:
Objectives: Recently in Poland as a result of the high rate of aging population and high rates of morbidity, a growing demand for the physiotherapist profession is observed. The results of this study can be used to formulate principles for better organization of physiotherapist's workplace in order to prevent occurrence of burnout. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of gender on satisfaction with life and burnout among active physiotherapists. Material and Methods: The survey was anonymous and voluntary, and involved a group of 200 active physiotherapists working in health care units and educational centers in Poland. The study group was selected randomly and incidentally. Each respondent received a demographic data sheet and a set of self-rating questionnaires (Life Satisfaction Questionnaire, Burnout Scale Inventory). Results: Burnout among men decreased along with increasing satisfaction with one's work and occupation, friends, relatives and acquaintances, sexuality, and increased due to greater satisfaction with one's housing status. Burnout among women decreased along with increasing satisfaction with one's health, free time and friends, relatives and acquaintances, and increased due to work at a setting other than a health care unit or educational center. Statistical analysis failed to reveal any significant differences with regard to the BSI domains and with regard to the overall burnout index as well as with regard to the assessment of satisfaction with life between female and male physiotherapists. Conclusions: Satisfaction with children, marriage and partnership, with one's work and occupation, interactions with friends, relatives and acquaintances and sexuality may contribute to reduction of burnout among men. Women who are satisfied with their children, family, health, free time and contacts with friends, relatives and acquaintances are less prone to burnout. Weak financial situation among women and deficiency of free time among men can induce burnout. Improving staff happiness may contribute to decreasing burnout.

Opis:
Cancer is a very important problem in both medical and social respects. In recent years, there has been a shift in approach to oncological prevention, diagnostics and treatment. As a result, oncology has become an interdisciplinary field. Factors relevant for successful oncological treatment are: sequence, type and scope of intervention, including diagnosis of the cancer, assessment of its progression, systemic treatment, surgery, radiotherapy, supportive therapy and rehabilitation. Rehabilitation addresses the realm of psychology (psychooncology), as well as somatic and social issues. Physical therapy is a notion inseparably related to medical rehabilitation and it encompasses a range of treatments which are based on the body’s reactivity to stimuli. The purpose of this article is to present the specific character, the methods and the role of physical therapy in oncology, as an increasingly popular strategy in medicine, which helps to improve performance and physical function in cancer patients. Physical therapy is essential in primary and secondary cancer prevention and it greatly contributes to improving the quality of life of patients and helps them recover quicker. Four basic kinds of intervention in oncological rehabilitation include: preventive interventions, restorative interventions, supportive interventions and palliative interventions. The main principle in rehabilitating a patient with an advanced cancer is progressing steadily but gradually. The primary and essential form of rehabilitation for cancer patients is movement exercise i.e. kinesiotherapy. Integration and cooperation during group exercise are also among the strategies that therapists seek to employ while working to improve the condition of patients diagnosed with cancer. Kinesiotherapy prevents pulmonary and thromboembolic complications in cancer patients. One method of physical therapy applied in cancer treatment is lymphatic drainage (massage), which improves circulation of lymph. To sum up, physical therapy plays an increasingly important role in holistic care of cancer patients. It is indispensable and should become a standard approach, as a method of reducing the risk of complications, helping in faster recovery and limiting the economic and social costs of treatment.

Social and cultural factors can lead to gender-biased expectations in physical therapy (PT) career. In Saudi Arabia, female physical therapists might be undergoing more cultural competencies than males to develop their career. This study aimed to investigate whether there are differences between men and women physical therapists (PTs) in their career expectations in Saudi Arabia. We tested 496 responses 192 (38.7%) were males and 307 (61.3%) were females. 325 (65.5%) responses were obtained from students including those in the internship year while the rest of the responses 171 (34.5%) were from graduated PTs. A descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken using a questionnaire sent electronically to PT students and graduates in Ha’il City, Saudi Arabia. The answers to questions regarding the future career expectation and the perception of PT career among other healthcare professions were analyzed. Statistically higher female numbers were expected to conduct research activity, become faculty teaching staff, continue their education, and attend special courses. No sex-related differences were found regarding the expectation to occupy a governmental job, own a private business and participate as an active member of the Saudi Physical Therapy Association. A higher proportion of females see that PT practice is as independent and prestigious as other medical and health specialties. Both genders considered PT is an prestigious as other heakth professions. There are sex-related differences in PT career expectations and the perception of PT career compared to other healthcare professions.

Movement is an essential characteristic that has developed over the course of human evolution. With the inclusion of various populations in sports activities, sports have become an important part of people’s daily lives. Knee injuries are common among athletes, with knee joint being the most vulnerable to various injuries. Knee injuries require appropriate treatment to allow the athlete to return to their sports activities. Additionally, this study aimed to increase awareness of the importance of preventing knee injuries in sports and to highlight the potential impact of such injuries on an athlete’s ability to participate in their sport.A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the functional outcomes of athletes with knee injuries. The study included 38 patients with knee injuries (ACL, meniscal injuries, collateral ligament injuries) out of which 21 were physically active athletes, 9 were not, but they were athletes who were not involved in sports at the time of the testing and 8 were recreational athletes. The majority of respondents (76%) reported that they sustained the injury during sports activities. Knee pain was reported as at least once a week by most respondents. The study highlights the importance of proper knee injury prevention measures during sports activities and the need for prompt and effective rehabilitation for those who do suffer injuries. Overall, these findings have important implications for the treatment and management of knee injuries among athletes and individuals seeking to maintain an active lifestyle.

Introduction and aim. The whole-body vibration has become known for optimizing the production of muscle power due to mechanical oscillations that are dependent on vibration frequency. However, the effects of varying the vibration frequency on flexibility have still been little explored. Compare the effects of two frequencies of whole-body vibration on flexibility and extensibility of the lower limbs. Material and methods. Randomized clinical trial with a sample of 42 young adult volunteers of both sexes, who performed squatting sessions with individualized load on a platform and distributed into three groups of vibration frequency: control group (CG), with the platform off; low frequency group (LF), with a frequency of 30 Hz; high frequency group (HF), with a frequency of 45 Hz. In total, the intervention was carried out in 12 sessions and lasted 6 weeks, with 2 sessions per week. Flexibility, evaluated before and after the intervention by the sit and reach test (Wells bench) and by evaluating the extensibility of the ischiotibials by goniometry. Results. No statistical differences were observed for any of the outcomes evaluated. Conclusion. None of the proposed frequencies produced gains in flexibility and extensibility of the lower extremities and there was no superiority of one frequency over another.

Opis:
Background: Primary menstrual pain affects approximately 45–95% of women between 20–25 years of age. A non-invasive method in reducing menstrual pain by relaxing muscle tension is a massage. It brings the structural tension to normal levels and restores correct blood flow in the pelvic region. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to test the usefulness of a self-massage in reducing the primary menstrual pain. Material and methods: Out of 180 female students, 34 women aged 19–30 were qualified for the study with the use of a survey. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and visual analog pain scale (VAS) were used for the assessment before and after the therapy. Women in the experimental group performed tensegrity selfmassage a few days before the onset of bleeding for two menstrual cycles. Results were analyzed using Student’s t test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Applying the self-massage statistically proved to significantly reduce the perception of pain (p = 0.001) and the number of days with pain (p = 0.007) in the experimental group. Within this group, the difference was noted in all participants except one. In addition, a third measurement was taken in order to assess the duration of the effect. The result of the average pain and number of days of pain after the extension was higher than in the second evaluation, but significantly lower than before the experiment. The significance was in accordance with the evaluation of pain, p = 0.002 and number of days p = 0.03. Evaluation of the quality of sleep in the experimental group was significantly better (p = 0.04) than before treatment. Conclusions: Self-massage reduces primary menstrual pain in women and can be used as an assisted form of self-therapy. It improves the quality of sleep.
Dodatkowo dokonano trzeciego pomiaru w celu sprawdzenia czasu trwania efektu automasażu.

Opis:
In this article, authors wish to share their experiences in work with the patients after cardio-thoracic surgery. Consecutive stages of early hospital rehabilitation and applied methods of therapeutic conduct have been described in detail. There are two main stages in cardio-surgical physiotherapy. Stage I – pre-operation preparation, stage II – early rehabilitation consisting of two periods: the first one run in an intensive care unit (ICU), the second one in a surgical unit. Along with the description of physiotherapeutic techniques, the most frequently occurring problems a therapist can face as well as the ways of managing them have been presented. The authors present certain dissimilarities in surgical rehabilitation of persons with different kinds of interventions on heart: CABG, plasty or the exchange of heart valve (aortic, mitral, more seldom tricuspid), the heart transplantation, operations of chest aortic aneurysm and abdominal aortic aneurysm, plasty of cervical arteries and corrective operations of cardiac defects. In the first stage the significance of patient’s complex preparation for the operation highlighting the importance of the patient’s education, which guarantees better postsurgical rehabilitation, is emphasized. In the second stage standard physiotherapeutic methods need to be aided by modern equipment: BIPAP Vision or Cough Assist. It has been observed that education, life quality assessment and support groups for patients after cardio-surgery have positively contibuted to rehabilitation process.

Purpose: Low back pain (LBP) occurs among approximately 60-80% of the population, gradually contributing to long-term or recurring disability. We aimed to evaluate the efficiency of two physiotherapeutic treatments (namely, Träbert current and kinesiotherapy) among patients with LBP. Material and methods: Comprised of function tests and scales of pain and functionality, clinical tests were performed according to a prospective method in a regional hospital in Lomza. Forty patients randomly distributed into two groups: one group a subject to physical therapy with Träbert currents, the other group to kinesiotherapy following a proprietary programme. Physiotherapy was performed from Monday to Friday for two weeks in a series of ten treatments. Results: The treatment used in both groups significantly decreased pain and increased functionality of patients, evaluated by Laitinen’s survey, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire. Results of the Schober’s and “fingertip-to-floor” tests also showed increased improvement. Conclusions: The physiotherapy facilitated a significant decrease in pain, an increase in the mobility in lumbosacral segment of the spine and a decrease in disability among patients with LBP.

BackgroundPhysical therapists are known to be susceptible to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), but the prevalence of WMSDs in Saudi Arabia has not been documented. This study aimed to establish the prevalence, characteristics, and risk factors of WMSDs among physical therapists in Saudi Arabia.Material and MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among 113 physical therapists in Saudi Arabia using a 6-component questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, incidence, percentages, and χ2 test were used for data analysis.ResultsThe response rate was 68.8%. The reported 12-month incidence of WMSDs was 83.8%. The low back (63.7%) was the most common site of these disorders, followed by the neck (59.2%), while the hip/thigh (4.4%) was the least involved body part. Incidence was related to gender: females were more affected than males (neck, shoulders, low back); age: younger therapists were more affected than older ones (shoulders, low back); working sector: government sector workers were more affected than those employed in other sectors (neck); and specialty: orthopedic specialists were the most frequently affected, followed by those specializing in neurology (thumbs, upper back, knees, ankle/foot). Most of the physical therapists had >5 periods of neck, shoulder, and low-back WMSDs. The most important risk factor for WMSDs was treating more patients in a day (47.7%). The most frequently adopted handling strategy identified to combat WMSDS was modifying the patient’s position (62.8%).ConclusionsOverall, WMSDs among physical therapists in Saudi Arabia are common, with the low back and the neck constituting the most frequently affected body regions. Professional experience and the awareness of ergonomics principles can help prevent the early development of WMSDs among physical therapists. Med Pr. 2021;72(4):363–73

Opis:
Introduction and objective. Low levels of physical activity (PA) and sedentary lifestyle have become a major public health problem in developed countries, even among the young population. The aim of the study was to determine and compare physical activity levels, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain symptoms (MPS) among the students of Physiotherapy and Social Sciences. Materials and method. A cross-sectional survey was performed on 517 participants and included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Short Form, SF-36 Health Survey, and the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Results. The majority of students (61.7%) met the criteria for the category “high” PA, and 11% respondents were in the “low” category. Male students accumulated higher levels of vigorous- and moderate-intensity PA, and scored higher in the domains of general health, vitality, and social functioning, while females scored higher in mental health (p<0.05). The physical component summary score was higher for Physiotherapy students, while Social Sciences students scored higher in the mental component summary score (p<0.05). The prevalence of MPS in the last year was 80.9%, more among female and Physiotherapy students (p<0.05). A weak association was found between MPS and lower levels of total PA, moderate- intensity PA and several domains of HRQoL (p<0.05). Conclusions. Students of both disciplines reported high levels of PA, but also a high prevalence of MPS which could have affected their HRQoL which was lower than in the general population. Gender differences were found in both PA levels and HRQoL, which suggests the need for the development of gender-specific preventive programmes.
