This is an overview of long-term studies (1966-1997) on the bank vole - Clethrionomys glareolus (Photo 1). population inhabiting Crabapple Island in NE Poland. The history of recognition of causes affecting population dynamics as well as variable interpretation of the facts comprising the theory of functional relations in that population is described. Meandering ideas can be illustrated by Fig. 1. The population dynamics (each year data on population numbers in April, July, and October are shown) is presented in Fig. 2. The evidence is provided that the population exhibits a weak 3.8 year and a much more clear 9.4-year cycle (Fig. 3). The number of sexually mature females, that is those able to reproduce, has been relatively stable and independent of the population size or of the immature female numbers (Fig. 4). The reason is the territoriality of mature females: the female territory (part of the female home range) cannot be visited by other mature females. A tendency toward territoriality was also noted among mature males, which numbers were limited by the availability of mature females, and therefore also relatively stable. Such a social system can be considered gynocentric.

The studies were carried out in Kosewo Górne in the Mazurian District (North-East region of Poland), in September 1995, September 1996 and between May 1997 and June 1998 each month. The animals were trapped in live traps, and after study they were marked and released. The infection of trypanosomes was detected using microhaematocrit centrifugation technique and in blood smears. The intensity of infection had the range from 50 to 150000 individuals in 1ml of blood. The maximal prevalence of infection was in August and September and there were 45% and 38% of infected voles respectively. The infection was detected also in May 1998, in other months the prevalence had low level. There were no individuals of bank vole infected in succecding months. The females of bank vole are more often infected with trypanosomes than males.

The accumulation of lead, cadmium, iron, nickel, copper and zinc in the femora of yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) and bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) living near the site of coal power station Novaky (Slovakia) was investigated. The content of heavy metals in the bones was assessed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry method. Altogether 20 femora of adult individuals were analysed. Higher concentrations of Cd, Ni, Cu and Zn were detected in the bones of bank vole. Significant differences were observed for the concentrations of Cd, Ni and Zn (p < 0.05). On the contrary, higher concentrations of Pb and Fe were found in the femora of yellow necked mouse. However, the differences were not significant. Our results indicate that Clethrionomys glareolus may be considered as more bone loaded zoomonitor in comparison with Apodemus flavicollis.
Zbadano kumulację ołowiu, kadmu, żelaza, niklu, miedzi i cynku w kości udowej myszy leśnej (Apodemus flavicollis) i nomicy rudej (Clethrionomys glareolus) zasiedlających tereny w pobliżu elektrowni Novaky na Słowacji. Zawartość metali ciężkich w kościach zmierzono metodą spektrofotometrii atomowej. Przebadano 20 kości udowych podchodzących od dorosłych osobników. Większe zawartości Cd, Ni, Cu i Zn stwierdzono w kościach nornicy rudej niż w kościach myszy leśnej. Istotne statystycznie różnice między badanymi ssakami dotyczyły zawartości Cd, Ni i Zn (p < 0.05). Z drugiej strony kości myszy leśnej zawierały więcej Pb i Fe niż kości nomicy rudej. Różnice te nie były jednak istotne statystycznie. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że kości nornicy rudej kumulują więcej metali ciężkich niż kości myszy leśnej, co może mieć znaczenie dla przyszłych badań monitoringowych.

Opis:
Fragmentation of the environment by natural barriers (lakes, mountain ranges) and human activities (towns, major roads, agriculture) can lead to isolated subpopulations of hosts. The study was carried out in Mazury Lake District in North−East of Poland, the region rich in forests, lakes, rivers and canals, which are able to create passable such barriers. Population of bank voles (Myodes glareolus) and yellow−necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis) — dominant woodland rodents — showed local differences in helminth communities in fragmented forest habitat. The sites were chosen on the basis of the similarity of their habitat structure and type, and isolation from one another. The impact of nematode (Heligmosomoididae) infections on co−occurrence and dynamic of Cryptosporidium parvum infection was studied in both rodent species Myodes glareolus (n=781) and Apodemus flavicollis (n=302) from three different habitats. Presented results clearly revealed that natural nematode invasion could facilitate the presence of chronic infections of Cryptosporidium parvum in wild rodent populations. Also, the intrinsic (host sex and year) as well as extrinsic (season and year of study) factors have obvious effect on dynamics of infections with both groups of parasites. However, there are also some evidences that steroids hormones associated with stress and reproduction may mediate trade−offs between physiology and immune function and can affect co−occurrence of both groups of parasites.

The prevalence and abundance of Cryptosporidium parvum were studied over a three year period (1997-1999) in three species of rodents sampled from forest and abandoned fields in the Mazury Lake District, Poland. The overall prevalence was consistently higher in voles compared with Apodemus flavicollis (70.6% in Clethrionomys glareolus, 73.0% in Microtus arvalis and 27.8% in A. flavicollis). The prevalence and abundance of infection also varied across the 3 years of the study with 1998 being the year of higher prevalence and abundance of the parasite. Fewer older animals carried the infection, and their infections were relatively mild. We found no consistent pattern of seasonal changes despite the significance of seasonal differenccs. Host sex did not influence either the prevalence or abundance of infection with C. parvum. A great proportion of recaptured voles developed chronic infections between consecutive trapping sessions and only a small number of animals recovered. However, yellow-necked mice seem to be much more resistant to infection that became self-limiting. Our results firmly establish that the common woodland and grassland wild rodents in the Mazury Lake District constitute a significant and hazardous reservoir of C. parvum for animals and humans.

The aim of the study was to investigate the pattern of daily activity and connections between daily and spatial activity in relation to the forest undergrowth phytocenosis of the two most common rodent species – bank vole Myodes (Clethrionomys) glareolus (Cricetidae) and yellow−necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis (Muridae). The research was carried out in July 2017 in the oak−hornbeam habitat in the Browsk Forest District in the northern part of the Białowieża Forest. For rodents catching and vegetation evaluation the 1 ha study plot was divided into 100 squares of 10×10 m. Catches were made according to the catch−mark−release method. Wooden live traps (with bait and food for caught animals in the form of the grains of cereals, juicy fruits and aromatic fat) were set in the center of each square. The traps were controlled during 4 days at 3−hour intervals (0 a.m., 3 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.). Traps occupied by rodents were marked with colored adhesive cards according to the established code. Twice a day – at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. caught rodents were identified to the species and released next to the traps. The catch time was recorded. In total, 151 catches were registered. The daily activity of rodents was determined based on the total catches into assumed time intervals and at different times of the day (day, night, dawn/twilight). We provided a detailed description of undergrowth features of the area where rodents were caught. In each square we assessed the dominant species (on this basis the plants communities were established), the average height of vegetation and the degree of soil coverage with plants (undergrowth density). Collected data were used to the interpretation of the spatial activity of rodents in relation to the different undergrowth characteristics. The bank vole was distinguished by an even, day−and−night activity rhythm, while the yellow−necked mouse by monophasic – remarkably nocturnal activity. The dependence of the phytocenosis characteristics and spatial distribution of rodents was revealed for the daily activity of bank vole and twilight−dawn activity of both species. At dawn and dusk voles and mice were active in places with high vegetation. The density of undergrowth was the most important feature for bank voles during the day.

The maintenance of Borrelia burgdorferi s.1. in the environment is dependent on the zoonotic cycle involving tick vectors and certain reservoir hosts. It is well known, that the same species of wild rodents, as well as the vector Ixodes ricinus, are often co-infected with at least two genomospecies of B. burgdorferi s.1.: B. afzelii and B. garinii. The ticks collected from two rodent species: Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis were examined for the presence of B. burgdorferi s.1., as well as for B. garinii and B. afzelii. In this study, an immunofluorescent antibody assay (lFA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocols were used. The high level of infestation in rodents (90% for C. glareolus and nearly 100% for A. flavicollis) shows that wild rodents are important hosts of the immature stages of I. ricinus. A high percent of Borrelia positive ticks collected from bank voles and yellow necked mice; above 7% determined by 1FA and 2% determined by PCR, elearly revealed that these species of animals are competent zoonotic reservoirs of B. burgdorferi s.l.

Maintaining biological diversity is one of the main goals of modern forestry. To reach this objective we need to know how management practices affect forest species. This study summarizes the results published in papers on the influence of clear−cutting on small mammals. Most of the studied species increased in abundance on clear−cuts. The response of voles (Microtus agrestis and M. arvalis) was uniformly positive. Mice (Apodemus flavicollis and A. sylvaticus) and shrews (Sorex araneus and S. minutus) varied in their responses but generally their number increased on clear−cuts. Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) appeared to be associated with the heterogeneity of habitat rather than with the age of forest stands per se. Nevertheless, our knowledge on the effects of forest management on small mammals is far from complete. In particular, there are almost no studies on the subject conducted in Western Europe or concerning management practices other than clear−cutting.
