Opis:
People’s feelings of confidence in the correctness of their knowledge while answering a knowledge test can be inferred in two ways: either by averaging the values of specific confidence values assigned to each item in a test (local confidence) or by asking after the termination of the test for an evaluation of the number of correct answers regarding the entire test (global confidence). Surprisingly, when local and global confidence values of the same test are compared, global confidence tends to be significantly lower than local confidence (the confidence frequency effect). In the present study a heuristic process explanation for the effect is presented and its validity is empirically tested. The global confidence heuristic (GCH) process is based on the ability of participants to recall, after a test was completed, the frequencies of specific confidence values which were assigned to the test’s items. Participants build their global confidence by adding about half the number of their guessed answers, to the number of questions with sure answers. The proposed GCH process was supported quantitatively. A content analysis on retrospective explanations provided by participants indicated that this process was feasible. Further research is needed in order to fully explore the power of the explanation suggested here for the confidence-frequency effect.

Opis:
After Vosikovsky (1975), the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate (CFCGR) characteristics have been divided into three regions. The region-III rates are very close to mechanical fatigue crack growth rates. CFCGR formulae, including the long-crack length effect (in region I only), the loading frequency effect (in region II only), and the saltwater temperature effect, have been proposed. It has been assumed that CFCGR is proportional to f –k, where f is the loading frequency and k is a constant. The averaged k-value for all steels of yield stress (YS) below 500 MPa, usually with ferrite-pearlite microstructures, is higher than that for YS > 500 MPa, usually with quenched and tempered microstructures. The temperature effect does not appear in region I below room temperature. In the remaining cases, that is, in region I for elevated temperatures and in region II for both low and elevated temperatures, the CFCGR increases with increasing temperature. Under a potential of –0.8 V, a long-crack-length effect, qualitatively similar to analogous effect for free corrosion conditions, appears.

Opis:
The current study addresses the nature of developmental reading deficits in Romanian upper primary grade students. We investigated the presence of a primary deficit in reading speed and the nature of reading strategies employed by Romanian dysfluent readers. This study is a part of a work in progress. Students with dyslexia were compared to students without dyslexia on measures of accuracy and speed of reading a text and non-word stimuli. The lexical procedure was investigated based on intra-individual comparisons of non-word vs. word reading, and high frequency vs. low frequency words. Our investigation yield interesting results. Students with dyslexia in third and fourth grades presented not only a reading speed deficit, but also less accurate reading. Also, there is evidence against the over-reliance of dyslexic children on the sublexical route.

The main purpose of this study is to build a Computational model based on ModelFest dataset which is able to predict contrast sensitivity while it benefits from simplicity, efficiency and accuracy, which makes it suitable for hardware implementation, practical uses, online tests, real-time processes, an improved Standard Observer and retina prostheses. It encompasses several components, and in particular, frequency dependent aperture effect (FDAE) which is used for the first time on this dataset, which made the model more accurate and closer to reality. Shortcomings of previous models and the necessity of existence of FDAE for more accuracy led us to develop a new model based on Wavelet Transform that gives us the advantage of speed and the capability to process each frequency channels output. Considering our goal for building an efficient model, we introduce a new formula for modeling contrast sensitivity function, which generates fewer errors and better timing performance. Eventually, this new model leads to having as yet lowest RMS error and solving the problem of long execution time of prior models and reduces them by almost a factor of twenty.

Ultrasound has a wide range of applications in oil sands separation industry due to its green and nopolluting characteristics. The combined ultrasounds technology has been widely used in many industries by virtue of the synergistic effect of cavitation effect; meanwhile, dual-frequency ultrasounds have been reported being used in lotion oil sands technology. Based on this idea, this study focuses on the application of multiple frequency ultrasounds in oil sands separation, and a comparative study has been conducted between the combined ultrasounds systems with the difference in the number of the ultrasound. The results show that the oil production rate of the samples treated by the lotion of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and assisted by multiple frequency ultrasounds (96%) is significantly higher than that of the single frequency ultrasound (76%); the bigger the number of the ultrasound participating in the combination is, the higher the oil production rate of the oil sands is; the lower the frequency of the ultrasounds employed in the combined system is, the higher the oil production rate is. The optimum treating conditions for tri-frequency ultrasounds assisted technology are as follow: the treating time is 10-15 min, the treating temperature is 20-30°C, the concentration of surfactant in the lotion is 1.5 g/l, and the mass ratio of the lotion to oil sands is 1.8. In short, the use of multiple frequency ultrasounds can improve the oil production rate of oil sands, reduce the energy consumption during the separation process, and reduce the environmental contamination; therefore, multiple frequency ultrasounds assisted oil sands separation technology is a promising technology for oil sands resources exploitation with high efficiency.

This paper proposes a self-excited induction generator model with saturation effect for power generating mode in a remote site. The model is led through the space vector mathematical formalism and allows one to analyze the steady and dynamic states. It is developed for a squirrel cage induction machine. This model provides magnetizing inductance variation able to influence the build-up and the stabilization of voltage generation when the load changes. The final result is a realistic approach model which takes into consideration the dependency of the magnetizing inductance versus magnetizing current. This novel model is validated through experimental measurements to demonstrate its validity and practicability.

We analyze the effects of coloring of a beam traversing a light-scattering medium. Spectral investigation of the effects of coloring has been carried out using a solution of liquid crystal in a polymer matrix (polymer-dispersed liquid crystals – PDLC). It is shown that the result of coloring of the beam at the output of the medium depends on the magnitudes of the phase delays of the singly forward scattered partial signals. We consider the influence of interference coloring effect on the transmission scattering and spatial-frequency filtering of the radiation which has passed through the PDLC.

The secretiveness of sonar operation can be achieved by using continuous frequency-modulated sounding signals with reduced power and significantly prolonged repeat time. The application of matched filtration in the sonar receiver provides optimal conditions for detection against the background of white noise and reverberation, and a very good resolution of distance measurements of motionless targets. The article shows that target movement causes large range measurement errors when linear and hyperbolic frequency modulations are used. The formulas for the calculation of these errors are given. It is shown that for signals with linear frequency modulation the range resolution and detection conditions deteriorate. The use of hyperbolic frequency modulation largely eliminates these adverse effects.

The first extensive investigation on the Lombard effect with Polish speech has been performed. Characteristic parameters of Lombard speech were measured: intensity, fundamental frequency, spectral tilt, duration of words, duration of pauses and duration of vowels. The effect was investigated in a task involving real communication – solving a Sudoku puzzle. The speakers produced speech in quiet and in three different backgrounds: competing speech, speech-shaped noise and speech-modulated noise. The experimental conditions were held as close as possible to those in the study by Cooke and Lu (2010) so that conclusions could be drawn whether differences between the Lombard effect in Polish speech and English speech existed. Most of the findings on the Lombard effect known from the literature have been confirmed with Polish speech. In three parameters, Polish speakers were more sensitive to modulated backgrounds while English speakers were more sensitive to a stationary background. In both languages, the modulated backgrounds induced speakers to extend pauses in the communication tasks.

Opis:
Mobile heavy machines as unsprung vehicles exhibit low dissipation ability, hence the ride even at low speeds may give rise to intensive vibration. Particularly dangerous situations occur when the road wheels break away from the road surface due to the ’galloping’ effect, being the result of excited vertical and angular vibration of the machine frame in the vertical plane of symmetry. That implies a major restriction on the ride velocity, which negatively impacts on the machine performance. Vibrations thus produced are mostly in the low-frequency range and hence energy dissipation in tyres will reduce the vibration intensity in a minor degree only. The motion of tired wheels will always involve some slipping. While investigating the feasibility of increasing the efficiency of the vibration reduction systems, one ought to take into account the variable adhesion of road wheels due to different dynamic loading acting on the vehicle axles during the ride. Observations of unsprung machines during the ride suggest the occurrence of self-excited vibration. Mobile machines constitute dynamic systems, which can be governed by nonlinear, sometimes non-stationary differential equations of motion. Their stability also depends on intensity of external vibrations. This study investigates the motion of unsprung mobile machines, taking into account the dynamic processes in the driving system under the conditions of the variable adhesion of road wheels. The model of interaction between a tired wheel and the terrain takes into account the relationship between the road wheel adhesion factor and the slipping action. Mathcad supported by Matlab-Simulink and in the frequency domain – simulations in the time domain. The purpose of the simulation procedure was to find the causes of the vibration modulation frequency and determine the conditions triggering the occurrence of self-excited vibrations. Simulations are supported by the analysis of motion stability.
