The mother/daughter bond is the central subject of Amy Tan’s two powerful books, The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Tensions that arise in the novels between a Chinese mother and her Chinese-American daughter are often described by the critics as being the result of two important factors. One is based on the misunderstandings caused by the generational gap, while the other comes from the cultural gap. For a Chinese-born mother the American reality instigates various confusions, as she still views her life with the eyes of her traditional Chinese upbringing. On the other hand, her daughter lacks any profound knowledge about her Chinese ethnicity, which makes her unable to recognize the influences of her mother’s Chinese past over their relationship. But in her novels Tan portrays also the relationship between the Chinese immigrant mother and her mother in China. Their relationship, which grew up exclusively on the grounds of the Chinese culture, is characterized by empathy and appreciation. In this paper I am going to discuss the change that occurred to the mother-daughter relationship after it has been replanted into a different cultural context. The line of argument will reveal in what ways the mother-daughter relationship underwent a significant transformation.

Communication in the Adolescent – Daughter and Mother and Communication with the peers of the same sex. Without a doubt relationship between Mother and Daughter is the most intense of all relationships. On the other hand, peers play a very important role in interpersonal relations during the period of adolescence. The purpose of the research was to determine the relation between the quality of communication between an adolescent daughter and the quality of communication with peers of the same sex. The data were collected from a sample of 138 female students aged 15 and 16. The researcher employed: Scale of Communication of Parents with Adolescents (PACS) and a sociometric questionnaire – Plebiscite of Kindness and Reluctance of Korczak. The initial results of the research indicate that the quality of communication between adolescent daughter and her mother is highly influenced by sociodemographic factors and communication with peers of the same sex depends on quality of relationships with mother.

Finding new forms for a literary representation of the father is a challenge, as family relations constitute one of the most popular literary motifs. Éric Chevillard’s innovative presentation of this subject takes the form of an unconventional blog, which is more literary than personal, and which exists in electronic and print formats. This peculiar – half-fictional, halfautobiographical – diary tells the story of a “housewriter,” combining creative pursuits with everyday fatherly duties, and thus invites the reader to reflect on the father–daughter relation and the changes it is undergoing in our times.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an English-speaking writer who was born in India in 1956 and is currently living in the United States. In Queen of Dreams published in 2004 she depicts the conflicts between Rakhi, a young American in her thirties living in California, and her India-born parents. Rakhi reproaches them for refusing to initiate her to Indian culture, particularly blaming her father for not being able to communicate. However, the mother’s death is the trigger for the father’s story. The father becomes the one who tells his daughter about life in India, thus embodying the missing cultural link in Rakhi’s family tree. The aim of this article is to offer an analysis of the father-daughter relationship as presented in Queen of Dreams. It intends to put into light the part played by the father in helping his daughter understand the way transgenerational loyalties work, and create a new identity of her own.

The paper presents how female migrants from the Opole region identify with their mothers, how different are their views of family and marital life, and what they would like to inherit from their mothers. The answers to these question are based on a number of women’s accounts of these issues and of the power of socialization. Sixty six interviews and letter diaries of female migrants have been analyzed in the paper. The presented research indicates that for most of the interviewed women their mother has been a strong role model of womanhood, but that they are different from their own mothers particularly in their perception and performance of the role of a woman. Although they admire their parents’ marriages, they do not always want to get married and cherish their marital relationships themselves. Taking up this role involves dilemmas. In the organization of social life Opole women expect their needs to be as important as those of men. They also hope for favorable circumstances under which they would have the chance of developing their full potential. Such wishes are especially characteristic of young women. Most female migrants attempt to expand their roles through labor market activity. Their migration, often caused by economic factors, has enabled them to feel active and needed.

The work Daddy #3 (2012) by Italian artist Giulia Andreani, inspired by a photographic archive, represents Heinrich Himmler with his daughter Gudrun. By means of adapting the photographic image into painting, the artist evokes the burden, sometimes heavy to carry, of family legacies. Moreover, Daddy #3 reveals Andreani’s interest in the woman artist figure, and in the issue of artistic heritage. The painting, which provokes one to ponder the political uses of the image of the family, can also be seen as one of the rare works of art representing an emotional relationship between a father and his daughter.

From the second half of the 20th century, the issue of women’s writing has been of considerable interest in literary studies, highlighting the need to know women as writers and as literary subjects, in order to understand female experience first-hand. This approach to written texts is based on two fundamental aspects of study: women as writers and the representation of women in the text. This has made it possible to examine how women are represented and what topics women writers prefer, for example, motherhood, a literary topos par excellence in Italian literature. Despite this, although motherhood is present in numerous works, the voices of actual mothers are largely absent: mothers and motherhood are in fact narrated from the point of view of daughters. In view of that, there are two main aims of this study: (1) to examine the possible reasons for the absence of the mother’s point of view and (2) to analyze some contemporary Italian literarature narrated by mothers themselves.

Life experience and narrative identity Narrative identity is a story about one’s biography. The story is composed with a use of interpretative schemas, which are provided by the culture. The story changes, when a person passes an important experience. It can change in a typical way, if the experience is typical, because culture offers particular set of possible interpretations of typical human experiences. A spectacular example of that phenomenon is the change of a story about one’s mother, when a woman becomes a mother herself (what is illustrated by conducted research). 50 woman married no longer then 4 years, were asked to tell a story about their mothers. Half of them have got one child (no older then 3 years), a second half have no children yet. Narratives were compared. Stories told by young mothers differ from childless’ women’s in many aspects, especially in paying attention to mother’s relations with others. Women, who have no children, speak of mother’s individual activities (her behavior, work, childhood etc). An experience of motherhood, as can be observed, changes the way the person perceives previous experience. It indicates that the narrative identity is not an agenda of the life events, it is rather a structure of the event’s interpretations – the interpretation constructed in terms of the general schema of meanings or, in other words, the general idea of one’s life.

Edith Stein was born in a traditional religious Jewish family. In her youth, she stopped praying and lost her faith in God. She was, however, very faithful in searching for the truth, which had become her life's passion. First, the article presents various definitions of truth. Then it deals with phenomenological methods of discovering the truth about man, which were characteristic of Edith Stein. Finally, it shows her discovery of the God of Love, who pulled her towards mystical union in the spirituality of Carmel. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) died in the concentration camp at Auschwitz experiencing the mystery of the Cross of Christ and sacrificing herself for her nation.

This paper aims at the interpretation of the father as an empty figure of authority in Samuel Beckett’s radio play entitled Embers. Through the close-reading of this play and the analysis of the relations between the protagonist and the two feminine characters, Ada and Addie, it demonstrates how the father figure coincides with the classical impasse of Beckett’s oeuvre: the subject unable to manifest itself. Due to that fact, the father is presented in the constant process of wearing his authorial space out. It is eventually demonstrated that in Embers the subject is coerced to balance between its self-deconstruction and the paternal violence: its focus on its own materiality results in the collapse of language, whereas overt attention on the linguistic cognition puts forward the logic of remnants resisting father’s orders, be it in the form of sound collage, or material element immune to symbolisation.

The article aims to show the role and meaning of the father in his daughter’s life. For a daughter who grew up without a father – who was absent in physical and emotional way – what results are serious consequences which affect her adult life. For example, those results are different types of psychological difficulties (of emotional, intrapsychic, or interpersonal nature). The author’s survey of the cases is based on the letters of adult daughters to their fathers, which contain a kind of retrospection. On the basis of the analyzed material what has been distinguished are the following consequences: the deficit of time spent with father becomes for daughter the cause of her inability to establish interpersonal relationships and create relationships; the deficit of affection shown by father is a source of impoverishment in his daughter’s emotional life; father’s absence in or abandonment of the family is for his daughter the cause of stress and depression.

W artykule przeprowadzona została analiza krytycznoliteracka, kontekstualna oraz egzegetyczna Wj 2,1–10. Przeprowadzono ją pod kątem wydobycia z tej perykopy ewentualnych „najstarszych” informacji z tradycji o Mojżeszu. Wnioski wyciągnięte na tej podstawie nie pozwalają potwierdzić archaicznego i niezależnego istnienia tej perykopy w jej pierwotnej wersji. Zdaniem autora elementem najstarszej tradycji jest jedynie samo Mojżesz – lewita (Wj 2,1–10)... 119 imię Mojżesza. Wszystkie pozostałe informacje zawarte w tej perykopie mają wyraźne odniesienia do bliższego i dalszego kontekstu z Księgi Rodzaju i Wyjścia.
he article was carried out analysis of the literary-critical, contextual and exegetical Ex 2,1–10. It was carried out for extracting the potential of this passage “oldest” of information from the tradition of Moses. The conclusions drawn on this basis does not allow you to confirm the archaic and independent existence of this passage in its original version. According to the author of the oldest part of the tradition is the same, only the name of Moses. All other information contained in this pericope May explicit reference to the proximal and distal context of Genesis and Exodus.

Communication in the relationship of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law may pose in many families some serious difficulties. The aim of this article is to present the results of a study involving mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. In this study varies aspects of this relationship were investigated, but in the present article only the results concerning communication are reported on. In total, 53 daughters-in-law and 29 mothers-in-law participated in the study. The research method involved questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The interview results were subjected to a detailed analysis of the four types of difficulties in communication identified in the research materials: geographical barriers, forms of address, conflict avoidance and discussions on difficult issues, and communication via son/husband. The research results showed that the key obstacles in communications between the mothers-in-law and the daughters-in-law were a lack of willingness to talk openly, avoidance of certain topics and not dealing directly with certain issues.
