Opis:
This paper contains an analysis of the determinants of predispositions of individuals to cope with stress in adulthood, very likely shaped in childhood. The theoretical part defines stress and ways to cope with it and describes the conclusions reached to date of studies on attachment styles determinants to cope with stress. Presents the results of the author’s own research showing the preferences of choosing different strategies to cope with stress depending on an attachment style shaped in childhood. The research conducted in 2013 and 2014 was participated by 180 women and 180 men aged 20-40 (M = 28.99, SD = 4.23), living in the Zachodniopomorskie and Lubuskie Voivodeships in Poland. Participants filled in questionnaires defining their ways of coping with stress and their attachment style. The research results obtained show that the respondents who the most frequently manifest active coping with stress and seeking support in difficult situations come from families that built in their child a secure attachment style. Helplessness and avoidant behaviours are more often evinced in stressful situations by the respondents brought up in families who built an anxiety-ambivalent and an avoidance attachment style.

Opis:
The following article presents the theoretical basis and practical reasons related to the concept of personality and stress coping styles. Sport dance is not yet popular in the field of Psychology of Sports. Dancing is often referred to in the literature as a form of art. The aim of the study was to present a psychological profile of the dancer as an athlete. Dominant personality traits and styles of coping with stress among the dancers are indicated in this paper. Also differences between men and women who are committed to continually work together as a dance couple are shown. 94 dancers were studied (W-46, M-48), aged 15-24 years (mean age 17 years, standard deviation 2.25). Subjects presented different levels of advancein sports, meaning they have different dance class which definesa skill of a dancer. They had also diversified dance training time, calculated as the number of trained years. Subjects came from nine Polish dance clubs. In the study were used: NEO-FFI Personality Inventory of Costa &McCrae and Coping Inventory of Stressful Situations of Endler& Parker. In order to obtain additional data and personal information related to the training process of dancers a surveyconstructed by the author was used. The results show the differences between women and men in terms of personality traits and stress coping styles. Women show a style focused on avoiding the stressful situation and seek social contact more than men. Women are agreeable and conscientious. Studies also show a correlation between age and type of coping style in a difficult situation. Older dancers are more focused on the task, while the younger focus on experienced emotions, avoiding the task or problem, engage in alternative activities. In addition, studies have found an importanceof advancement of sport styles in somestress coping styles and in selected personality traits. The dancers with a higher dancing class, that are more advanced present style of coping with stress concentrated on the task, less advanced dancers are more emotional and neurotic.

The purpose of this study was to test the association between individualistic, collectivistic and affiliative orientation and stress coping style. It was hypothesised that highly individualistic subjects will mainly choose change, self-blame and problem oriented styles, highly collectivistic subjects will choose emotional regulation and imitative coping style, whereas highly affiliative subjects will prefer the acting out style, defined as a tendency to express negative emotions and discuss problems with others. The Polish version of Lazarus and Folkman’s Ways of Coping Questionnaire (adapted by Łosiak) and Adamska’s Individualism, Collectivism and Affiliativity Questionnaire were used. Individualism was positively correlated with problem orientation, collectivism was positively correlated with resignation and situation accepting styles and negatively correlated with emotional regulation. The affiliative orientation was positively associated with problem orientation and imitative coping styles. The preferred coping style depends on the dominant social orientation.

The aim of the study was an evaluating the frequency for adapting different strategies within the group of surgeons to cope up with stress and determining the differentiation on their usage depending on the type of the hospital unit and social-demographic variables.Material and methods. The samples were 40 surgeons from hospitals. Following research methods were applied: 1. Latack Coping Scale was used to investigate the strategies of coping with stress; 2. Personal questionnaire was used to obtain general social-demographic data about subjects.Results. The Latack scale is a reliable tool for testing work related stress coping strategies within a group of surgeons. Active strategies are more common than avoiding strategies. Surgeons mostly use Direct action and Positive thinking strategy in coping with stress at work. In turn, Alcohol use strategy is rarely use by subjects to solve difficult professional situations. The lack of significant differences in frequency of usage of particular strategies in correlation with the hospital type was observed. There is positive correlation which is statistically significant between analyzed social-demographic variables and usage of Avoidance/Resignation strategy within examined surgeons. The more experienced, older people are, the more likely it is that they will use this strategy in stressful situations.Conclusions. Surgeons usually use adaptive strategies in coping with stress at work.

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between different intensity of creative attitudes and the level of social competences and coping with stress style among first-year students. The theoretical basis was the Stanislaw Popek Theory of Creative Attitudes, Anna Matczak Theory of Social Competences and N.S. Endler and J.D. Parker Theory of Coping with Stress Style. There were 130 students evaluated by Creative Behaviour Questionnaire KANH by S. Popek, Social Competences Inventory KKS by A. Matczak and Stress Coping Strategies Questionnaire CISS by N.S. Endler and J.D. Parker, in Polish adaptation by Szczepaniak, Wrześniewski. It was found that, there are differences in social competence levels and coping style among participants with different intensity of creative attitude. In general, creative people have higher social skills than the people with imitative attitudes. They have higher scores in KKS Inventory than once with imitative attitudes in the following scales: social exposure situations behavior (ES), situations requiring assertive behavior (A) and in the overall result (WL). Also people with medium intensity of creativity have higher social competences than those with imitative attitudes. Participants with creative attitudes are more problems oriented than people with imitative attitudes and with medium level of creativity. They also have lower scores in CISS Questionnaire, in scales: emotion-focused coping, avoidance-focused coping, including involving into substitute activities, like watching TV or playing computer games.

Opis:
Abstract Selecting specific professional activities (e.g. a brigade officer) and methods for coping with difficult situations may result from personal predispositions of a given person. Personality is founded on the innate temperament. The way of dealing with stress depends on personality traits whose influence is manifested, amongst other things, in the selection of specific coping styles. The current study aim to examine the level of correlation between personality and temperamental traits with manifested coping styles. The study covered 58 volunteers – male fire brigade officers. The following tools were used: Personality Inventory, NEO-FFI, Formal Characteristics of Behaviour: Temperament Inventory – Revised Version, FCZ-KT (R) and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, CISS. Emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations correlates with the following traits: positively, with perseveration (r=0.5115) and with emotional reactivity (r=0.4927), and negatively, with briskness (r=-0.3926) and endurance (r=-0.5408). The task-oriented coping style for stressful situations correlates positively with extraversion (r=0.3236) and conscientiousness (r=0.3088), and negatively with neuroticism (r=-0.3368) in the NEO-FFI. The emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations is positively correlated with neuroticism (NEO-FFI) (r=0.4150). In fire brigade officers, As far as personality traits were concerned, fire brigade officers scored relatively high in extraversion, conscientiousness and low in neuroticism and were likely to demonstrate the task-oriented coping style for stressful situations. Lower level of perseveration and high level of briskness and endurance were associated with emotion-focused coping style for stressful situations. Similarly, the tendency to focus on emotions experienced in stressful situations were associated with high level of neuroticism in the study group.

Presented paper deals with the dependency between organisational interpersonal atmosphere in organisations and coping strategies, used by polish and german workers. There were 30 Polish and 30 German subjects, representing three kinds of business companies: commercial, concerning computer technology and productive. The methods were Kolb’s Questionnaire for Organisational Atmosphere and Coping Inventory of Stress Strategy by Endler and Parker, both in Polish or German linguistic version. The results suggest that there is certain difference between Polish and German workers: the former are used to apply coping strategies, which are appropriate to the perceived organisational weaknesses, the latter – mostly use strategies directed towards the emotional discomfort and tension. Surprisingly, the Poles who are functioning in well organised office are motivated to use mainly emotional (and avoiding) strategies, what may be understood as a result of weak identification with the organisation.

COPE inventory, coping with stress, football, gender differences, sports stress
Opis:
Background: Stress is an inseparable attribute of sports activities. The answer to the question of how to effectively cope with stress in a competition is one of the most important challenges of sports psychology. The aim of this research is to analyze the stress-management strategies used by football players. Methods: Participants in the study were 32 students of physical education specializing in football and 39 students of management, aged between 19 and 27 years (M = 21.41, SD = 1.76), including 24 women (34% of all respondents). Coping strategies were assessed through application of the multi-dimensional COPE inventory. Results: In comparison with the sample of management students, the group of footballers use the strategy of positive reinterpretation and growth significantly more often, and less frequently use alcohol or other psychoactive substances in a stressful situation. Women use the strategy of seeking emotional support significantly more often than men, while significantly less often using psychoactive substances and humor. Conclusion: This research revealed that trainers and sport psychologists should take into account gender differences and the specificity of the sports discipline of the athletes when working on selection of the best strategies for coping with stress during competitions.

Opis:
Introduction: There are studies, which prove a positive influence of biological drugs on effects of medical therapy but there are few of them, which focus on aspects of quality of life and coping with stress. Purpose: To assess quality of life (QoL) and methods of coping with stress depending on the used form of therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment. Materials and methods: Comparative analysis included 64 patients: I group B – treated with the method of biological agents; II group T - treated according to rheumatologic standards. The study used: Short Form 36 (SF–36)- general questionnaire use for assessment QoL, HAQ (Health Assessment Questionnaire) scale of functional efficiency, Mini-COPE inventory for coping with stress. Results: Assessment of QoL with the use of the SF-36 questionnaire showed low QoL of patients in both groups. Higher QoL was observed in group B in all domains except PF domain where group T got a higher score. Analysis of QoL within total physical and mental health assessment also indicated higher QoL of patients from group B relatively PCS (39.8% vs. 33.5%) and MCS (56.9% vs. 40.9%; p<0.001). Analysis of coping with stress showed that the most common strategies of coping with stress in group B are positive: sense of humour (1.06 vs. 0.61; p=0.008) and planning (1.95 vs. 1.81), positive redefinition (1.59 vs. 1.48), acceptance (2.00 vs. 1.95). Whereas among patients in group T the strategy ‘turn to religion’ prevails (1.44 vs. 0.91; p=0.014). Conclusions: Biological agents favourably affect assessment of QoL and a degree of functional disability in patients with significant intensification of the disease symptoms. In patients treated with biological drugs using positive strategies of coping with stress, and difficult situation is observed. Patients treated with biological drugs show better satisfaction from treatment and fewer unfavourable symptoms resulting from the used therapy.

The concept of personal resources is used in health psychology in reference to all the factors that help in coping with stress. Moos and Schafer define personal resource as: ‘relatively stable personal and social factors, which influence the way the individual tries to tackle life crises and stress transactions’. Many researchers count the following as important personal resources: social support, ways of coping with stress, self-esteem and self-efficacy, sense of coherence, level of optimism, ability to act assertively, locus of control. Paramedics can be associated with jobs requiring above-average level of both health and psychological costs. Thus, determination of the relation between the sense of coherence and ways of coping with stress will be the subject of this project.

Opis:
Early intervention and  early support are actions aimed at  a child with disturbed development and  their families. The emergence of any developmental disorders in a child is always a stressful situation and demanding changes and taking action to support parents. The resource enabling one to get additional help is the social network of the family. The quality of services depends on the size and category of persons that compose it. It should be borne in mind that focusing solely on the rehabilitation of the child – taking for granted the needs of the remaining family members – may lead over time to the dysfunction of the whole family. Restrictions that appear and result from the child’s disability, create a real threat of marginalising or even exclusion of the family from social life. It is unable to overcome the crisis without any help, therefore the actions of family support networks also play an important role. The main objective of this article centred around the information on the relationship between the size of a support network, the kind of the disorder in children and strategies for coping with stress in parents of children participating in the process of early support or early intervention. The study covered 93 parents. The Map and Questionnaire of Social Support of Zdzisław Bizoń and Inventory to Measure Coping Strategies with Stress – Brief COPE were applied. Analysis of the results showed no significant correlation between the two variables. The applied statistical analysis allowed us to identify the most commonly used strategies to cope with stress by parents and enabled us to characterise the size of the network and the categories of people who create it. The article ends with conclusions concerning the areas of practical actions under early intervention.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd psychologicznych koncepcji stresu i radzenia sobie. W pierwszej części zawarto charakterystykę klasycznych koncepcji stresu i aktywności zaradczej. W dalszej części opisano narzędzie badające poszczególne wymiary proaktywnego radzenia sobie – Kwestionariusz Reakcji na Codzienne Wydarzenia (The Proactive Coping Inventory – PCI).
Current paper provides a review of the psychological theories of stress and coping. The first part describes the classic concepts of stress and coping. According to the traditional approach in psychology stress is seen as a stimulus, a person’s reaction to a threatening factor, or as a result of interaction of both. The second part introduces an alternative concept, called – the proactive coping. This approach provides understanding of the stress situation in terms of challange. It stands in an opposition to classical (reactive) concepts in which stress is a synonym of danger. Following part gives a description of tool that measures the dimensions of proactive coping – the Proactive Coping Inventory (PCI).
