The article deals with influence of the Serbian elite in the scope of the Yugoslav Foreign Service during 1918–1939. The influence of the elite circles was particularly prominent in the Yugoslav Army and in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as was the case in Serbia until 1918. As non-institutional factors had great influence on the work of state institutions, the first aim of this paper is to examine the main aspect for selection, career development and obstacles in the life of Yugoslav Diplomats, derived from the power struggle among elite circles. The second aim is to compare Serbian and Yugoslav experiences in order to establish similarities and differences in the characteristics of the pre-War and Interwar Diplomatic-Consular personnel. The analysis is based on Yugoslav archival materials, as well as on foreign published documents, memorial literature and relevant Yugoslav/Serbian and foreign historiography.

Post-Yugoslav film art is, similarly to Yugoslav cinema, exemplary of masculine cultural domination, approaching socio-national themes in a highly gendered mode and reflecting a return to patriarchy, more brutal than that during the existence of Yugoslavia. A new generation of cinéasts explores, with a backlash mixture of contempt and compassion, the themes of violence, displaying a new assault on female emancipation, which seemed to be in line with the socio-political context of rising nationalist movements that led to the bloody events of the Yugoslav war in 1991. The female character is re-located to a place traditionally assigned to women not as the subject of narrative or discourse, but as the object of love and/or hatred by a masculine subject. The films chosen to be analysed here are full-length auteur feature films – Virgina, Grbavica, Djeca, Bure baruta, with a specific focus on the work by Danis Tanović – are not representative of post-Yugoslav cinema, but as rare exceptions demonstrate that, contrary to the dominant post-Yugoslav public opinion, both the Yugoslav wars and post-war traumatic realities remain cinematically unexplored.

In this paper, I approach to the relationship between the art and the democracy via discussion of two histories of Yugoslav literatures. I propose and try to defend a thesis that both accounts of the history of Yugoslav literatures synchronize temporalities of the different national literatures, reducing thereby differences between them. Both histories substantialize Yugoslav literature as a remnant of the lost community. They argue that immediacy of that community had dissolved into the variety of nations, which led separate lives under the rule of empires. In the name of that mythical past, heterogeneous temporalities are synchronized to the single temporal flow. However, the similar substantializing operation and synchronization is present in the more recent concept of (post)-Yugoslav literature.

The article attempts to outline the problem of exile in essays of Predrag Matvejević, a remarkable Croatian intellectualist, defining himself as Yugoslav. Starting with a short presentation of his nonconformist views on political and social issues and review of constantly returning charges against the essayist, the article focuses on tracking main features of his writing about political emigration. The paper discusses the condition of writer in exile and the consequences of being between exile and asylum. The conclusion is statement that only cultural identity offers asylum.

However much interest the Yugoslav conflicts of the nineties seem to have sparked within the broader academic community, some relevant topics are still found to be missing or underresearched. The forced mobilization during the Milošević regime that culled men of almost all age in order for them to fight for their country is one of them. With the recently published Untold stories of the victims of the forced mobilization, some new light has been shed on the cullings of the 1990s. This article explores those stories, including recently emerged transcripts from the governmental sessions discussing them, and puts them through a historical lens.

One of the central notions of the post-Yugoslav literature is the status of democracy in national states formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia. From the perspective of the exile, not only as banishment, but also as a liberating outside view into the once common social, cultural and political space, the post-Yugoslav writers question the social democracy praxis in their former home states comparing it to the social practices in the states of their current residence. In her books of essays, Dubravka Ugrešić ironizes different forms of social ideology in Croatia from the beginning of nineteen-nineties. Her writing recognizes the standards of European democracy accompanied with the ideological view into the questions of social rights, religion and language as the stumbling block of modern society. Ugrešić describes democracy as a notion hiding different things: the praxis of ruthless capitalist exploitation, loss of media freedom, media manipulation, the censorship of corporate capitalism, production of lies, modern slavery... (Don’t take it personal, 2014), validating in her essays the importance of literature in disclosure of autocracy masked as democracy.

The main thesis of the paper implies the historically changeable characteristics of symbolical resistance in the texts of „jeans prose” (Flaker). Using jeans as a symbol of global popular culture, freedom, casualness, the American lifestyle, resistance to forms, rules, and high culture etc., jeans prose had its specific life in Yugoslav socialism which dynamically changed during the last three decades of socialist Yugoslavia. In the early sixties it was a symbolic place of critique of dominant socialist ideology and in later period, in a more commercial orientated Yugoslav society when jeans as commodity became a part of everyday life, jeans prose lost its primal rebel energy and malted into the culutral mainstream.

In this article, I analyze the relations between humans, non-humans, and infrastructure in Vjeran Miladinović Merlinka’s fictionalized autobiography Terezin sin. I argue that queer humans and non-humans share a particular ontological and axiological space and time in urban ecology in relation to the built environment of cis-heteronormative socius grounded in reproductive heterosexuality.The fictionalized autobiography that is explored in this article offers a particular view of minoritarian relation as it depicts a queer form of relationality that is lived sideways to the cis-heteronormativity and reproductive heterosexuality as an oppressive form of life that creates a specific kind of infrastructural intimacy for itself in the urban built environment. Relations between queer humans andnon-humans under these conditions are decidedly messy, as they are described as both caring and exploitative in Terezin sin.

The subject of this paper is a new generation of female directors in former Yugoslav (Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) cinematography. It considers the stylistic, narrative and representational strategies in the films Clip (Klip, 2012) by Maja Miloš, Sonja and the Bull (Sonja i bik, 2012) by Vlatka Vorkapić, Our Everyday Life (Naša svakodnevna priča, 2015) by Ines Tanović, Zagreb Cappuccino (2014) by Vanja Sviličić, Trampoline (Trampolin, 2016) by Zrinka Katarina Matijević, You Carry Me (Ti mene nosiš, 2015) by Ivona Juka, and Quit Staring at My Plate (Ne gledaj mi u pijat, 2016) by Hana Jušić. The movies are related through conceptual, thematic and/or stylistic features. They examine the position of female protagonists in a patriarchal society and their daily experiences, wherein they dissect gender, economic and social problems that exist in countries in the territory of former Yugoslavia.

Games of a subject: A sketch of the (early) works of Mladen StilinovićThe article concerns the conceptualization of the subject in the works of the contemporary Croatian visual artist Mladen Stilinović. The object of analysis are most of all works (collages, texts) from the 1970s and early 1980s, when the artist formulated the basis for his creative philosophy and at the same time determined the directions of their research. His system of reference were the socialist state order and the traditionalist, academic system of artistic practice, which he criticized from the perspectives of Diogenes, philosophical Cynicism and constructive anarchism. Until this day, the attitude of resistance is the main creative principle for Stilinović’s art. He sets strong, conscious and autonomous creator’s “I” against symbolic violence of different systems (political, ideological, educational, etc.). This “I” is not so much the material and object of expression as a space of play based on concpetualism and self-irony. Gry w podmiot. Szkic o (wczesnej) twórczości Mladena StilinoviciaArtykuł dotyczy konceptualizacji podmiotu w twórczości współczesnego chorwackiego artysty wizualnego – Mladena Stilinovicia. Przedmiotem analizy są przede wszystkim prace (kolaże, teksty) z lat 70. i początku 80. XX wieku, kiedy to artysta formułował podstawy filozofii twórczej i określał kierunki swych poszukiwań. Układem odniesienia były dla niego wówczas socjalistyczny porządek państwa i tradycjonalistyczny, akademicki system praktyki artystycznej, które poddawał konsekwentnej krytyce z pozycji rozumnego, diogenesowskiego cynizmu i konstruktywnego anarchizmu. Do dziś postawa oporu jest dla Stilinovicia podstawową zasadą twórczą. Przemocy symbolicznej wszelkich systemów (politycznych, ideologicznych, edukacyjnych itp.) przeciwstawia mocne, świadome i niezależne „ja” twórcy. Jest tu ono nie tyle tworzywem i przedmiotem ekspresji, ile polem gry opartej na koncepcie i autoironii.

In this article the problem o f Yugoslav Newspeak, in the Croatian version that appeared in the period o f the so-called Croatian Spring (1971), is taken into consideration. The aim ofthe analysis is to demonstrate how Croatian national values and beliefs - understood in semiotic terms as a ‘m onal codę’ - were conveyed within the rigid and inflexiblecommunist discourse (understood as a ‘communist codę ). Thus, the Stalinist slogan “National in form, socialist in content” is dcliberately shifted into “Socialist in Form andNational in Content”. This shift aims at demonstrating that the Croatian elite took advantage of the communist Newspeak in order to explicate its own national consciousness without being accused of anti-Serbian nationalism, or de stroying the idea o f “brotherhood and unity”. The interrelation of the two codes brings about a very complex linguistic phenomenon. In the article the analysis concems several problems: (1) the semiotic capacity of the genre that enablcd one to convey national values without questiomng Yugoslav unity, (2) discursive formations hringing about sensitive relations hetween Croats and Serbs, including certain semantic and formal strategies, and (3) the issue o f the purist consciousness with respect to Newspeak. The article demonstrates that the communist political leaders play an important role re-establishing independent Croatian discourse. This stratégy is not limited to Croatia sińce in all of the former socialist republics o f the Yugoslav I cderal >n the same situation occurred.

The Perception of Yugoslav-Bulgarian Relations in the Daily “Politika” in the Context of the Pan-Balkan Entente Concept in the First Part of the 1930s.The Yugoslav-Bulgarian rapprochement, initiated by the king Aleksandar I Karadjordjević in the early 30s of the twentieth century, with an idea of inclusion of Bulgaria to the planned Balkan Pact was one of the biggest reorientation in the Yugoslav policy at the turn of 20s and 30s. Since the end of the Great War, the eastern neighbour of Yugoslavia was treated rather as one of the greatest threats to the postwar order in the Balkans. This reorientation, resulting primarily from the geopolitical situation in Europe required propaganda action of warming the image of Bulgaria in the eyes of the Yugoslav society. This would not be possible without the support of the press, which in the first half of twentieth century, was still the most popular and definitely most accessible medium of information, which could significantly affected on the perception of current political events by the public opinion. The aim of the author was to present changes in the way of presenting the Yugoslav-Bulgarian relations in the daily Politika, the biggest and most read newspaper in the interwar Yugoslavia, in the context of political activities of king Aleksandar I towards the creation of the so-called Balkan Entente. Postrzeganie stosunków jugosłowiańsko-bułgarskich na łamach dziennika „Politika” w kontekście idei tzw. Ententy Bałkańskiej w pierwszej połowie lat 30. XX wiekuZbliżenie jugosłowiańsko-bułgarskie zainicjowane przez króla Aleksandra I Karađorđevicia w latach 30. XX w. z myślą o włączeniu Bułgarii do planowanego tzw. Paktu Bałkańskiego było jedną z najpoważniejszych reorientacji w jugosłowiańskiej polityce zagranicznej przełomu lat 20. i 30. XX w. Od zakończenia I wojny światowej wschodni sąsiad Jugosławii traktowany był raczej jako jedno z największych zagrożeń dla powojennego ładu na Bałkanach. Wspomniana reorientacja, wynikająca przede wszystkim z sytuacji geopolitycznej w ówczesnej Europie, wymagała ocieplenia wizerunku Bułgarów w oczach jugosłowiańskiego społeczeństwa. Zadanie to byłoby niemożliwe do realizacji bez wsparcia prasy, która w pierwszej połowie ubiegłego stulecia była nadal najbardziej popularnym i zdecydowanie najłatwiej dostępnym źródłem informacji mogącym realnie wpływać na odbiór bieżących wypadków politycznych przez opinię publiczną. Celem autora było przedstawienie zmiany sposobu prezentowania stosunków jugosłowiańsko-bułgarskich na łamach dziennika „Politika”, największego i najbardziej poczytnego czasopisma międzywojennej Jugosławii, w kontekście działań politycznych zmierzających do utworzenia tzw. Ententy Bałkańskiej.

Kosovo and Albanian-Yugoslav relations in the period of 1944–1948 The period of the first four years after the end of the Second World War was one of a few examples of cooperation in Albanian-Yugoslav relations. It was one a of a few times when these relations were based not only on ideological similarities but on pragmatic grounds as well. This pragmatic outlook is quite specific for the attitude assumed towards the problem of Kosovo. The abandoning of the concept of Greater Albania propagated in 1941–1944 by the occupation authorities and the incorporation of Kosovo into the Republic of Serbia (within the Yugoslav Federation) aroused resentment among a number of Albanian population living in Kosovo. For the new elite ruling in Tirana cooperation with Belgrade became such an important factor in the process of stabilisation of the state and of the new system that the problem of Kosovo was treated as an internal Yugoslav issue. When in 1948 Yugoslavia was expelled from Cominform, Albanians made the most of this opportunity and freed themselves from under the rule of their northern neighbour. This put an end to the process of unification of the two states. The events of 1948 limited, for quite some time, migration from Albania to Kosovo making the Albanians living in Kosovo „hostages” in Albanian-Yugoslav relations. For Albanian historians, especially those who wrote their works in the period between 1992 and 1997, this short-term Albanian-Yugoslav cooperation resulted in the stigmatisation of a number of people who were labelled traitors of the Albanian nation as they expressed loyalty towards communism joined with a servile attitude towards Belgrade. Serbians pointed to the experiences of 1944-1948 as an example of possible reconciliation between the two states for which the problem of Kosovo was not a destructive issue

The director uses the ornamental style, modeled on Italian cinema, to portray the change of power in Dubrovnik in 1941 – at the beginning of the fascist occupation of the city. He juxtaposes the licentiousness of Italian, German and Croatian fascists and the fall of the Dubrovnik aristocracy and the rebellion of communists. The political changes in the city are presented against the background of its rich cultural tradition. Zafranović highlights the beauty of Dubrovnik’s architectural and natural landscape that fascists desecrate. Decadent poetics with its aesthetic excess allows him to refresh and deepen the communist interpretation of the fascist occupation.
