Opis:
In this paper, we study the export performance determinants of firms in selected MENA countries, both jointly and separately, as well as compare them with the performance of firms from countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The analysis is based on information about individual firms found in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and World Bank Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey (BEEPS) V database, covering the period 2011-2014. We estimate the probability of exports, while controlling for country- and sector-specific effects, using the probit model. We find that, in both groups of countries, similar variables affect firm export performance. Our empirical results obtained for Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and CEE countries indicate that the probability of exporting is positively related to the level of productivity, firm size, spending on research and development (R&D), the share of university graduates in productive employment and the internationalization of firms. State ownership and the perception of corruption by firms are mostly not statistically significant. The results obtained for the two groups of countries are statistically not very different, but enough to have some policy implications, while results for particular countries and subgroups of countries reveal a large degree of heterogeneity.

Opis:
The study objective was to examine the role of marketing strategies on export performance of fresh produce fi rms in Kenya. A major stream of research has considered marketing strategy and performance within the context of a domestic economy. A census survey was carried out among all the 100 fresh produce fi rms that were ordinary members of the Fresh Produce Export Association of Kenya (FPEAK) as at 31st June 2019. The study utilized a positivist approach. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted. The results of regression analysis revealed that the relationship between marketing strategies and export performance was positive and statistically signifi cant. To policy makers, the study recommends regional and bilateral trade agreements that seek to increase the market share for fresh produce fi rms. To management practice, the study provides guidelines on how to design and implement sustainable but competitive marketing strategies for the export market. For future research direction, the study recommends additional moderating/mediating variables that may infl uence export performance.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to show that the main driving force behind the dynamic development of international service trade in recent years was an increasing role of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) in this trade. The first part of the paper focus on indicating main factors that have contributed to rapid growth of KIBS in service trade, defining KIBS trade and presenting a short review of related research. The second part of the study is empirical. The author shows an increasing role of KIBS in world service exports, as well as studies the situation in different groups of countries. The analysis refers to the exports of total KIBS and of each KIBS categories. The paper uses UNCTAD database. The analyzed period usually covers the years 2000-2013, because data on individual components of Other services have been available since 2000.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relation between exports and economic performance, and the extent of state ownership in the largest non-financial enterprises in Poland in 2011–2015. We address the following research questions: (i) What is the share of export companies in the group of the largest non-financial enterprises in Poland in terms of ownership structure (stateowned and privately-owned companies) and sectors? (ii) Are there differences in the economic performance of exporting companies compared to their non-exporting counterparts? Among the largest exporters, state-owned companies and companies from the manufacturing and mining sectors still dominate. Exporting state-owned enterprises have higher productivity than non-exporters, which could be caused by their dominant position on the domestic oligopolistic market. Exporting private-owned companies performed better in the case of ROA and ROE than exporting SOEs. This could be explained by the fact that private companies have a higher efficiency of property management and are expected to pay dividends by their shareholders.

Opis:
Research background: Due to having lack of financial power and low amount of revenues, most of SMEs' major concerns are bankruptcy and low financial performance. Those issues are risky situations for SMEs when making for their exporting activities. Therefore, depending on their performance and bankruptcy risk, they might more intensively perceive export barriers and this fact might determine their export decisions. Purpose of the article: This paper examines whether financial performance and bankruptcy concerns of SMEs affect their perceptions of export obstacles or not. Methods: This research performs random sampling method and directs an internet-mediated questionnaire to the selected respondents who are the executives of 408 Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian SMEs. To examine the influences of firm performance and bankruptcy on the perceptions of export impediments by SMEs, this paper employs Ordinal Logistic Regression Test. Findings & value added: The results show that SMEs having less healthy financial conditions less intensively perceive cultural-linguistic export barriers in comparison with SMEs having better financial performance. Moreover, firm performance is not a predictor variable in the perceptions of export costs, legislative and tax-related barriers by SMEs. On the other hand, while SMEs having more bankruptcy concerns more intensively perceive tax-related and cultural-linguistic barriers, bankruptcy concerns of SMEs do not influence their perceptions of export costs and legislative differences. Although many studies have investigated the impacts of financial conditions of SMEs on their internationalization and exporting decisions, they are isolated with only a market or only with a financial issue. The limited extents of those studies cause a partial investigation of export and financial issues of SMEs and make readers having a narrow perspective in this specific area. By focusing on various export obstacles and financial issues that SMEs face in different markets, this research offers a detailed understanding of SMEs' perceptions regarding their financial conditions and export barriers, from a comprehensive perspective. In this regard, this is the research gap that this paper aims to fill.
