Opis:
The Jews and Armenians inhabiting the Poland of days gone by had much in common, despite their different beliefs. Previous research has, however, devoted little attention to this problem, and even when it has the discussion has not been entirely objective. In recent times, the problem was discussed by Krystyn Matwijowski and Nadzieżda Bańczyk and Karina Mkrtczian. While in the last twenty years studies on the history of Jews have been thorough, the history of Armenians has to a large extent been neglected by Polish historiography (with the exception of the works of M. Zakrzewska-Dubasowa and K. Stopka).

As a hierarch of the Church, Józef Teodorowicz had a unique capacity for combining his calling to priesthood with a concurrent dedication to social and national ministry. That is why he always strongly advocated an authentic development of autonomy and religious freedom of the Armenian minority and of other national communities in Galicia. He was convinced that only by maintaining the community's distinctiveness and identity can traditional values be truly guarded. Teodorowicz was aware that genuine spiritual and cultural ties in a national community living in diaspora can only be cultivated in an attitude of trust and by setting personal example of worthy conduct. Hence in his pastoral letters and on other occasions he attached such powerful prominence to his deep concern about pouring into the hearts of the faithful the spirit of love and courage so that they could be living carriers of the most profound national traditions.

Magazines of national minorities can be a source to learn about them. The article analyzes selected issues of the journal “Biuletyn Ormiańskiego Towarzystwa Kulturalnego”, which have been published by Armenians in Poland since 1993. The author is interested in the picture of contemporary Armenia in this periodical. The analysis showed that there are relatively few messages about today’s Armenia in this journal. This is because Armenians in Poland are very assimilated and they are mainly interested in the history of their own group. And yet in the Bulletin there is more information about contemporary Armenia than in other Polish magazines.

Among Armenians living in Poland, the town of Kuty was an exception: until the outbreak of World War II, Armenians spoke their dialect, closely related to the West Armenian language. In the late 19th century, J. Hanusz, a Polish linguist spent several weeks in Kuty to study the local language spoken by Armenians. His work has become the research base of this article. It is intended as a review of Polish loanwords identified in the Kuty dialect (on top of Turkish, Kipchak, Russian and other loanwords). As far as it was possible, the author has listed and analysed the origin of these loanwords. However, nearly each of them should be explored in more detail in the future.

The hero of these memoirs, father Adam Roszko-Bogdanowicz, was born on July 12, 1898, in Dolininy into the Armenian family of Stanislav and Wanda de Oroszena Bohdanowicz. He finished middle school in Lviv and the Latin Seminary there, and was ordained a priest in 1920 by Armenian Archbishop Józef Teodorowicz. He was one of the organizers of the Library of Religious Knowledge in Warsaw (1920-1923), then he was vicar of the Armenian cathedral in Lvov (1923-1927), administrator of the parish in Horodenka in Pokucie (1927-1935), from 1933 a general canon of the Armenian chapter in Lvov and editor of the theological journal "Gregoriana" (1935-1938). He became known as a valued pastor, catechist and retreat leader, tireless confessor and spiritual director, patriot, journalist and publisher of religious literature. During World War II, he became involved in patriotic activities in the Union for Armed Struggle, and was arrested by the NKVD in 1940 and sentenced to death, which he avoided. He was held in the prison on Kazimierzowska Street (the socalled "Brygidki") in Lviv, where he was murdered by the Soviets on June 24, 1941. They exchanged views on a wide range of religious life, professional work, current problems and difficulties. A reliable biography of father Adam Bogdanowicz has not been compiled so far, therefore the published memoirs provide many interesting and previously unknown details of his life and religious, social and patriotic activities.

Opis:
The article discusses the state of research on liturgical monody of the Armenian Apostolic Church. This monody is a collection of musical and literary works, coming mostly from the period from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries and performed during the liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In the Middle Ages khaz (neumatic) systems were developed for recording the melodies of monody, but most of the systems have been forgotten. In the nineteenth century in several centers of Armenian culture, melodies of that monody were written down from the oral tradition with the so-called new Armenian notation. Studies of the monody since the eighteenth century were followed by both researchers of Armenian origin, as well as other nationalities, but to this day no university has established any entity, which could be regarded as a center for research on liturgical monody of the Armenian Apostolic Church. In the world literature no monograph has been written, which would include general issues concerning the liturgical monody of the Armenian Apostolic Church. There are several lines of research on this monody: history, theory and khazology (neumology), retrieving, processing and cataloging sources, the study of medieval commentaries on sacred music, the study of various kinds of the monody, and finally performance practice in the liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church. There are difficulties in conducting research on this monody, including scattered sources and limited contact between researchers from Armenia and other countries. The final conclusion of the work is that the issues concerning the Armenian Apostolic Church monody not yet been sufficiently studied.

The presence of the Kurds in Karabakh, the contemporary Armenian-Azerbaijani borderland, since the beginning of the 18th century was used by great powers in their geopolitical rivalry in the South Caucasus. In the beginning of the 20th century, the Kurdish minority in Karabakh became part of the conflict between Armenian and Azeri nationalists as well as an element in the Soviet policy on nationalities. As a result, the Kurds got an autonomous county within Soviet Azerbaijan. They were indirectly supported by Armenians against the Azeris and finally assimilated by the Azerbaijani majority. The article is a short overview of the history of the Kurds in Karabakh and contains an analysis of their role in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. The paper maintains that both Armenians and the Azeris used the Kurds for their own political goals.

Diocesan schema constitute a valuable source of knowledge on various ecclesial, diocesan or monastic communities. These important publications were also drafted for Eastern Rite Catholic Churches. One of the most interesting documents, albeit largely unknown, is the Armenian Rite Archdiocese of Lviv schema prepared in 1939, currently stored within the Archdiocese Archive in Gniezno. The information contained within this document reference the period directly preceding the start of the Second World War, which for the Armenian Rite Archdiocese of Lviv was a time of sede vacante after the death of Archbishop Józef Teodorowicz. Thanks to data contained within the schema, it is possible to recreate an image of the Armenian Rite Archdiocese of Lviv, which in 1939 was divided into 3 deanaries (Lviv, Stanisławów and Kuck), 8 territorial parishes and 1 personal parish (for the military in Łowicz). It consisted of ca. 5300 followers and 25 clergymen, of which 17 worked directly as priests. The schema additionally supplies a lot of information related to rich Armenian history and culture, their input with regards to propagating education in the Eastern borderlands and to aiding those in need.

In the course of history, peoples and tribes have given each other designations on the basis of distinctive features, qualities and circumstances. The pretext for the creation of such names was the geographical area, special qualities of a particular people, religious affiliation or epic genesis. With the beginning of the Arab conquests and campaigns in the middle of the 7th century CE, Armenia fell under Arab domination becoming part of the Arab Caliphate within the next decade. The aim of the paper is to present what names were given to Muslims in what historical context, how these names reflected the perception of a different ethnoreligious community.

The article examines genocide as a category that has been used and abused in various, especially historical, political, and ideological, discourses. It considers whether the extermination of Jews (the Holocaust) should be studied in the context of other mass crimes. I investigate various sources of twentieth-century organized violence and their literary representations. I also discuss the works of Polish literature (by Nałkowska, Gębarski, Woroszylski, and Margolis), which depict twentieth- -century acts of genocide (the extermination of Jews and Armenians, in particular) in the context of other mass crimes.

The main topic of this article are modern Polish patronymic surnames (with the suffixes -icz, -owicz/-ewicz), whose origins can be pointed to, or are owed to, Armenian lexemes (the author also encompasses Armenianised anthroponyms which are hereditarily foreign). The first Armenians‑who used the Kipchak language‑arrived in Polish lands in the 14th century. During the 18th century, in the South-Eastern Borderlands, a new Armenian wave of migrants arrived; the newcomers used to communicate in a dialect which belonged to the Western Armenian group of dialects. The Slavic surroundings they found themselves in (Polish and Ruthenian-Ukrainian) gradually influenced the Armenian anthroponyms: both Kipchak lexemes and Armenian patronymic suffixes were modified with Slavic patronymic suffixes. In this article, there are presented 57 anthroponyms (contained in 25 dictionary entries) which originate from, or may come from, Armenian proper nouns.

The article concerns Stefan Żeromski’s Przedwiośnie, one of the most important Polish novels of the twentieth century. So far the work was considered, especially its first part (Szklane domy), whose plot is set in Baku, mainly in the context of the Bolshevik Revolution. It was ignored, however, that the historical background of the novel (its plot) are also other, linked with that revolution (and partly caused by the Bolsheviks), dramatic historical events: ethnic feuds between Armenians and Azeris (“Tartars”) and the Turkish intervention, which is one of the stages of the Armenian Genocide. The fate of Cezary Baryka, the main character of Przedwiośnie, is usually seen in terms of transformation, education, ideological development. It is worth noting that the Baku massacres are for Cezary not only a lesson or a warning, but they are also the source of his demoralization; it can be concluded that the hero is “infected with death”.

Opis:
Turkey, as a state operating in accordance with the well-known saying by its first President, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Evde sulh cihanda sulh, and aspiring to good relations with all its neighbours, started negotiations on establishing diplomatic relations with Armenians in 2009, using Switzerland as a mediator. Armenia’s increasing economic and financial dependency on Russia contributes to the growing poverty in widening social circles in the country, which are to a certain extent interested in opening the border with Turkey. Cross-border trading could improve the material situation of many Armenians. Turkey, on the other hand, aspires – although not unanimously – to join the European Union, who is pressuring it to raise the standards of, among other things, democratic behaviour towards its ethnic minorities; the current Turkish government is therefore very interested in softening and regulating its relations also with Armenia (who wants to strengthen its relations with Europe), which would be very well received by the West and to a certain extent move forward the difficult process of integrating Turkey with the EU. Therefore in both countries, Armenia and Turkey, the trends towards establishing diplomatic relations and open the borders have been growing recently. This was supported by the pressure from the USA, as the American diplomacy was making efforts to bring both feuding countries to start negotiating.
