Opis:
Thermo-optical properties of hydrogenated amorphous carbon nitride layers (a-C:N:H) deposited on crystalline silicon by plasma assisted chemical vapour deposition were studied. The layers were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and their chemical composition, i.e. [N]/[C] ratio, was determined by energy dispersive X-ray technique. The optic measurements were made by spectroscopic ellipsometer Wollam M2000 equipped with a heated vacuum chamber. The measurements of ellipsometric angles were carried out during heating the sample from room temperature to 300°C. Refractive index, extinction coefficient and the layer thicknesses were calculated by fitting the model of the layer to the ellipsometric data. The results confirm that at about 23°C the layer properties are changed. The measured thermo-optical parameters, dn/dT and dk/dT, show abrupt change from negative to positive values which can be explained by structure graphitization. Simultaneously, the bandgap decreases from 2.5 to 0.7 eV and the layer thickness drops to about 50% of the initial value.

Opis:
Strong optical polarization anisotropy observed previously in the exciton photoluminescence from [100]-oriented quantum wells subjected to the in-plane magnetic field is described within microscopic approach. Developed theory involves two sources of optical polarization anisotropy. The first of them is due to correlation between ψ-functions phases of electron and heavy hole which arise owing to electron Zeeman spin splitting and joint manifestation of low-symmetrical and Zeeman interactions of heavy holes in an in-plane magnetic field. Other optical polarization anisotropy source stems from the admixture of light-holes states to heavy-holes ones by low-symmetry interactions. The heavy hole splitting caused by these interactions separately and the effects of their interference are analyzed. The domination of C$\text{}_{2v}$ low-symmetry interaction connected with quantum wells interfaces and/or in-plane deformations takes place in relatively low magnetic field. The directions of this perturbation determine main directions of the π-periodical optical polarization anisotropy. The cubic anisotropy of valence band can add the π/2-periodical contribution to the optical polarization anisotropy. In the case of quantum wells with semimagnetic barriers the Zeeman term contribution can reach value, which dominates the C$\text{}_{2v}$ ones, and crossover to polarization connected with magnetic field direction may be observed in low temperature.

Nanocrystalline CdO thin films were prepared by sol-gel dip-coating method using a different solution. The as-deposited films were subjected to drying temperature of 120° in air. The prepared films were annealed in different temperatures of 200, 300 and 400°C. The characterization of samples was carried out by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Results show that the samples are polycrystalline in nature and the crystallinity of the films improves with temperature. The average grain size is in the range of 19-34 nm. It was observed that the optical parameters of the films were affected by annealing temperature.

Optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides monolayer of MoS₂ are analyzed using multi-orbital tight-binding models with only Mo d-orbitals (three-band model) and with an inclusion of S p-orbitals (six-band model). We look at band structures, momentum matrix elements between valence and conduction band, and joint optical density of states. Good agreement between the two models is shown in a vicinity of K point of the Brillouin zone. On line connecting K and Γp points, a local conduction band minimum at Q point is recovered only by six-band model in agreement with density functional theory and experimental results. We show that optical transitions at this point are active for both light polarizations. A peak in joint optical density of states is also seen at this point suggesting its potentially important role in a proper description of excitonic effects.

The undoped and lanthanum doped cadmium oxide thin films were prepared by sol-gel method. The CdO films were doped with various percentages of La, 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 at.%. We have investigated the structural properties of the CdO films by atomic force microscopy. The obtained results show that both the grain size and the surface roughness of CdO films reduce with increase of La doping content. Additionally, the result shows a significant decrease of the transmittance in the range of 300 to 500 nm with increase of La doping level. The optical band gap of CdO films increases with La doped CdO films. It was found that the band gaps to be 2.25, 2.36, 2.4, 2.28, and 2.31 eV for La contents with 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 2 at.% doped CdO, respectively.

Opis:
A review on selected areas of research on low-dimensional structures consisting of diluted magnetic (semimagnetic) semiconductors is attempted. In the introductory part, after short historical preliminaries, we describe some early ideas and speculations concerning properties of such structures and we confront them with real results obtained in the course of their experimental investigations. Several issues are addressed to but, in view of the richness of the field, the review is by no means not pretending to be an exhaustive one. We begin with early studies of metal-insulator-semiconductor structures and progress to structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We discuss, in particular, the idea of a spin superlattice, type-I-to-type-II transition, wave functions mapping, and detailed determination of the profiles of realistic quantum wells. We put special emphasis on digital growth and, specifically, parabolic and half-parabolic quantum wells, use of tunable g-factor in studies of trions, self-assembled quantum dots, spin injection and, finally, on hybrid structures of ferromagnets and diluted magnetic semiconductor structures. The focus of the present paper is on work done in the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, mostly in the Laboratory of Growth and Physics of Low-Dimensional Crystals.

This paper represents an overview about exciton systems in the molecular nanostructures (ultra thin films and superlattices) and their implications on optical properties, primarily on absorption coefficient, which is given in the form of dielectric permittivity. With utilization of Green's function method, we have calculated dispersion law, spectral weight of exciton states and dielectric permittivity for every type of nanostructures. All obtained results are compared with optical properties in bulk crystals. Dielectric permittivity in all types of nanostructures shows very narrow and discrete dependence of external electromagnetic field frequency, which is a consequence of the expressed quantum effects, very thin thickness in these structures (or at least one dimension confinement) and boundary conditions.

High-resolution photoacoustic spectra of trinitrato-bis[N-(2-pyridyl-methylene)-N'-benzoyl-hydrazine]R (III), (R = La, Ce, Pr), and binitrato-bis[N-(2-pyridylmethylene)-N'-benzoyl-hydrazine]R(III) nitrate (R=Y, Nd, Eu, Yb, Tb, Gd, Ho, Dy, Er) complexes, in the visual region, were studied for powder samples. Very intense photoacoustic spectra of various shapes were attributed to the intraligand transitions of the π → π* type located mainly on the C=N group and the n → π* transitions located on the carbonyl group. The intensity of these transitions essentially depends on the type of rare earth ions. The existence of f-f electron transitions could influence the relaxation processes, which play an important role in intensity determination of the above transitions. For many investigated samples the energy levels of excited states of rare earth ions were identified (f-f electron transitions). The radiation energy for some of the rare earth ions were compared with the d-d electron transitions of certain copper(II) organometallic complexes, which are very important in biogenic systems. The correlation between ions with localized and extended wave functions is suggested.

A microscopic theory of optical properties of thin molecular films, i.e. quasi 2D systems bounded by two surfaces parallel to XY planes was formulated. Harmonic exciton states were calculated using the method of two-time, retarded, temperature dependent Green's functions. It was shown that two types of excitations can occur: bulk and surface exciton states. Analysis of the optical properties (i.e. dielectrical permittivity) of these crystalline systems for low exciton concentration shows that the permittivity strongly depends on boundary parameters and the thickness of the film. Influences of boundary conditions on optical characteristics of these nanostructures were especially analyzed.

Opis:
The elastic stiffness tensors for wurtzite GaN and AlN show a significant hydrostatic pressure dependence, which is the evidence of nonlinear elasticity of these compounds. We have examined how pressure dependence of elastic constants for wurtzite nitrides influences elastic and piezoelectric properties of GaN/AlN planar superlattices and quantum dots. Particularly, we show that built-in hydrostatic pressure, present in both quantum wells of the GaN/AlN superlattices and GaN/AlN quantum dots, increases significantly by 0.3-0.7 GPa when nonlinear elasticity is used. Consequently, the compressive volumetric strain in quantum wells and quantum dots decreases in comparison to the case of the linear elastic theory. However, the z-component of the built-in electric field in the quantum wells and quantum dots increases considerably when nonlinear elasticity is taken into account. Both effects, i.e., a decrease in the compressive volumetric strain as well as an increase in the built-in electric field, decrease the band-to-band transition energies in the quantum wells and quantum dots.

We investigated the influence of zero-point fluctuations (vacuum fluctuations, optical quantum noise) to the optical response of electromagnetic metamaterials containing dielectrics with third-order Kerr-like nonlinearity. We determined the zero-point noise and calculated it for different analytes, including those used in forensic analysis and organic pollutants. The zero-point noise level is highest for shortest-wavelength plasmons and decreases towards long-range plasmons. It may be tailored through a convenient design of the metamaterial structure. Since noise spectral power is proportional to the nonlinearity of the analyte species present, we considered the possibility to use zero-point noise as an auxiliary tool for identification of targeted nonlinear samples. We believe that our investigation could be of importance in homeland defence, forensics, biomedicine, etc.

We show how to compute electro-optical spectra of semiconductor superlattices in the region of interband electronic transitions. The method uses the microscopic calculation of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the macroscopic real density matrix approach to compute the electromagnetic fields and susceptibilities. The electron-hole screened Coulomb potential is adapted and the valence band structure is taken into account in the cylindrical approximation, thus separating light- and heavy-hole motions. We calculate the electro-optical functions, including the optical Stokes parameters and ellipsometric functions for the case of oblique incidence. Results are given for Zn$\text{}_{1-x}$Cd$\text{}_{x}$Se/ZnSe superlattices and a good agreement with experiments is obtained.

Noisy, non-resolved emission spectra of the (0,0) 391.4 nm N$\text{}_{2}$$\text{}^{+}$ molecular band are employed for the rotational (and in some case vibrational) temperature evaluation in different sources in the range of 320-7900 K when the apparatus function of the recording system is unknown. The following sources are examined: an ovoid-shaped transferred arc at atmospheric pressure, a low-pressure transferred arc, a high-voltage high-pressure electric discharge, a low-pressure radio-frequency discharge, and an atmospheric pressure laminar plasma jet. The described method is based on a normalization of the experimental spectrum with respect to the (0,0) band-head amplitude followed by a point-to-point comparison of the real spectrum with respect to a computer simulated spectrum using the best-square fit criterion. This criterion is found as the good one: the relative error on temperature evaluation had the same order of magnitude as the noise-to-signal ratio, even if the last one was relatively high. It was also found that the rotational and vibrational temperatures in the radio-frequency discharge are very different, which indicates an out of thermodynamic equilibrium characteristic of such a discharge. The proposed method of temperature evaluation is shown as quite precise and simple to use for even the non-spectroscopists.

Synchrotron radiation has become a valuable tool for many fields of basic research. Several of the methods which were here developed are also suitable for solving industrial problems. Perhaps the most promising ones are the various X-ray techniques, e.g. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) and X-ray fluorescence. In the following article the theoretical and experimental basis for these techniques is shortly introduced and some instructive examples for such applications for actual industrial problems are dicussed. In the last section, X-ray lithography for the production of microstructures is presented as an example where synchrotron radiation is already today used for industrial production.
