    L’articolo prende come obiettivo d’esame una delle produzioni più cospicue e poderose del cinema muto italiano, ossía "Cabiria" (1914) di Giovanni Pastrone, la quale viene considerata qui tanto come una messa in scena dell’ epoca di guerre puniche assai riuscita quanto come una manifestazione di certo tipo d’esperienze tipiche per gli italiami negli anni della spedizione conquistatrice in Libia. Uno dei modelli più significativi per la sua azione, oltre a quelli di Flaubert e Salgari, è stata "Sophonisba" di Gian Giorgio Trissino, un celebre dramma rinascimentale dal quale sono stati tratti alcuni personaggi, come Masinissa, Scipione e Sophonisba stessa, nonché avvenimenti essenziali, poi integrati con successo con la trama principale del film. Si esamina dunque in grosso modo la maniera in cui il racconto trissiniano viene trasferito sullo schermo tenendo presente prima di tutto di questioni come la visualizzazione della realtà antica, il semplificare dei conflitti morali e l’ostentazione del Pastrone nel trattare scene del sogno della principessa e della sua morte suicida.

    Autor wskazuje i poddaje analizie wszystkie pojawiające się w twórczości Jana Kochanowskiego wzmianki o Neapolu i Kampanii, które odwiedzić miał  okazję poeta w 1555 r. Jednym z takich przypadków jest pojawiające się w łacińskiej elegii III 17 sformułowanie"Parthenopea lues", które stanowi peryfrastyczne określenie syfilisu, choroby, jaka w czasach Kochanowskiego doprowadziła do śmierci wielu Europejczyków. Wzmianka ta wchodzi w obręb rozbudowanej tyrady wymierzonej w niewymienioną z imienia kobietę, która - zgodnie z żarliwie wypowiadanymi życzeniami podmiotu mówiącego - zapłacić ma srogą cenę za swe występki przeciwko miłości. A ostatnią, i najdotkliwszą z kar, jakie przyjdzie jej znieść przed finalnym pochłonięciem jej przez Tartar, ma być właśnie "morbus gallicus". W artykule rozważa się kwestię identyfikacji kobiecej protagonistki wiersza, biorąc pod uwagę istniejące na ten temat hipotezy. Opatruje się też komentarzem stosowny, poświęcony kile, passus elegii, zwracając uwagę a to na nieco osobliwe miano, jakie przydaje jej poeta, a to na wiedzę z zaskresu syfilitologii, którą dzieli się z czytelnikiem.
    The author gathers and scrutinizes the cases in which Jan Kochanowski, the most prominent poet of the Polish Renaissance, mentions Naples or Campania, one of his destinations while travelling through Italy in 1555. One of the designations in question appears to be „Parthenopea lues” from his Latin elegy III 17, a periphrastic term for syphilis, a disastrous veneral disease which truly decimated the population of then Europeans. It’s mentioned as part of a long tirade against a woman who, according to the poet’s wishes, is going to pay high price for her wrongdoings, especially those against love. The ultimate punishment she will suffer, right before immersing herself in the abyss of Tartarus, will be, devastating for her health, „morbus gallicus”. The paper ponders on the right identification of the female protagonist of the elegy, taking into consideration the existing theories about it as well as comments on a peculiar name syphilis was given by the poet and the medical knowledge she shares with a reader.

    The paper takes a common view of those works by Jan Kochanowski which reflect the relationship between the author and the act of the Polish-Lithuanian Union established on 1 July 1569 in Lublin. The only text that is the poet’s direct reaction to the event in question is Proporzec or Hołd pruski, which does not mean that there are no other works of this type by Kochanowski. The examples are the poem Zgoda / Concordia, Fragment XXI (Battle with Amurat at Varna), the Latin Ode IV (Ad Concordiam) or Fraszka II 107 (Na most warszewski / On the Bridge of Warsaw).

    Opis:
    The article focuses upon the description of the massacre of seven Maccabean brothers and their mother, from the seventh chapter of the Second Book of the Maccabees, as one of the most important representational patterns for the chronologically later Christian hagiographic literature, and also outlines theological foundations, developed by the Fathers of the Church, for the inclusion of the heroes of the Jewish uprising from the second century B.C. in the category of martyrdom characteristic of Christianity. In the part devoted to the Old Polish reception of this theme, special attention is devoted to a separate literary rendition of the story, which is the only one of its kind, in A Pathetic Story of one Mother by Samuel Dowgird of Pogowie. A detailed analysis focuses on both placing this adaptation within the entire translation work of the Lithuanian author and the idea of its interpretation. The paper is complemented by a critical edition of Dowgird’s work.

    Author, pondering over various meanings of “fraszka” in the work of Jan Kochanowski, expresses his doubts in regards of Sante Graciotti’s thesis, claiming there is no one single case of its genological use in it. Sufficient enough to prove it wrong is the fact of him naming his epigrammatic collection – simultaneously to the process of putting in proper order his output – with the use of nothing other but this exact notion. The impending appropriation of such a use in Polish language has been shortly after confirmed by Melchior Pudłowski’s Fraszek księga pierwsza (1586). In further part of the article author tries to establish the precise moment of the first ever use of the word “fraszka” in print. As it turns out, although Kochanowski makes a use of it for the first time in his Satyr (1564), he was slightly preceded by both Stanisław Orzechowski’s Rozmowa albo dyjalog około egzekucyjej (1563) and anonymous Historyja trojańska (1563).
    Autor, rozważając sposoby rozumienia leksemu „fraszka” przez Jana Kochanowskiego, poddaje w wątpliwość tezę Sante Graciottiego, jakoby nie pojawił się ani razu w twórczości pisarza genologiczny sens tego leksemu. Za dostateczny dowód, iż jest inaczej, uznaje on opatrzenie przez czarnoleskiego poetę takim a nie innym tytułem swej obszernej epigramatycznej antologii w momencie porządkowania dorobku całego życia, a potwierdzenie, iż sens ten doczekał się rychłego zadomowienia, przynosi wydany krótko potem zbiór Melchiora Pudłowskiego Fraszek księga pierwsza (1586). W drugiej części artykułu próbuje się ustalić, komu należy przypisać pierwszeństwo, jeśli chodzi o użycie wyrazu „fraszka” w druku. Jak się okazuje, u samego Kochanowskiego leksem ten po raz pierwszy pojawia się w Satyrze (1564), wyprzedzają go natomiast nieznacznie zarówno Rozmowa albo dyjalog około egzekucyjej (1563) Stanisława Orzechowskiego, jak i anonimowa Historyja trojańska (1563).

      The article casts light on a poorly known and rarely appreciated figure of a late-Baroque Dominican, keen preacher and devoted translator of both laic and religious texts, Jan Alan Bardziński. The author firmly states that Bardziński’s literary activity remains strongly connected to his multiple duties as a monk as one of the main values he searches for in his readings is a didactic one. Nevertheless he certainly can be defined as a consistent adapter of some renowned ancient works as well, which puts him among other 17th and 18th century followers of the humanistic and classicist traditions and enables us to rank high his erudition and philological preparation. The essay makes a brief survey of his works, describing their content and underlining some important notes given by the translator himself regarding his goals and prorities. Some general observations on the characteristics of his texts are made and the question of integrity or disintegrity of his literary production is highlighted as well.     The article is devoted to little known and rarely appreciated late-Baroque Dominican Jan Alan Bardziński who was a keen preacher and translator of bothsecular and religious texts. Bardziński’s literary activity is strongly connected to his duties performed in the order as one of the main values he searches for in his texts is of a didactic nature. Simultaneously, he may certainly be perceived as an adapter of some ancient works which puts him among other 17th and 18th-century followers of the culture of Classicism. In the article we briefly discuss his works and provide the readers with their distinctive features. Moreover, we shall take into consideration Bardziński’s notes which allow us to define his goals and priorities and underline the moral values included in his works.

    The article lists all references to the New Testament characters, like Jesus Christ, Saint Peter, and Lazarus, in Jan Kochanowski’s works. To some of them additional commentaries are given, e.g. to Elegy I 10 (from the collection Elegiarum libri duo) where the scene of the betrayal of Judas is used as a warning to the bellicose pope Paul IV who intended to regain Naples. The article also points to the fragments where the presence of Christ may be seen as desirable or even necessary and yet he is conspicuous by his absence. This particularly applies to Laments, as the collection completely ignores the Christian perspective on the redemptive power of suffering. Given the scarcity of references to the New Testament in Jan Kochanowski’s works, which is even more striking when compared to the multiple references that they make to David’s psalms, the article speculates on the reasons for Kochanowski’s preferences as well as opens a broader discussion on the confessional aspects of Kochanowski’s poetry.

    The paper includes two Polish translations of two Latin elegies of Jan Kochanowski. Their author is a Late-Renaissance poet Jan Daniecki (died after 1611), known for his passion for the antique tradition since he also translates some works of Lucian of Samosata. The first work tells the heroic deeds and tragic death of the legendary princess Wanda; the second one presents the story of two lovers, Odatis and Zariadres, overcoming all odds to unite and live happily ever after.

    The article constitutes an attempt at elaborating upon a distinguishable type of text composition appearing in the parts that conclude individual books of Jan Kochanowski’s Fraszki. What is especially emphasized by the author of the article is a peculiar, in terms of convention, way of crowning the collection by two epigraphs whose character is obviously obscene: Marcinowa powieść (III 85) and O flisie (III 86). In the light of the argumentation presented, the sense of the poets’ concept implemented therein should be sought in a much dichotomous relationship between the two said fraszkas and the preceding poem Na słup kamienny (III 84), but also in the figure of achieving a defined aim, which appears in both the fraszkas. The author of the article also considers some correspondences occurring between the fraszka O flisie and the pieces Na most warszewski (II 106–108) and the elegy III 15.
