Opis:
Christensen has defined a generalization of the property of being of Haar measure zero to subsets of (abelian) Polish groups which need not be locally compact; a recent paper of Hunt, Sauer, and Yorke defines the same property for Borel subsets of linear spaces, and gives a number of examples and applications. The latter authors use the term "shyness" for this property, and "prevalence" for the complementary property. In the present paper, we construct a number of examples of non-shy Borel sets in various groups, and thereby answer several questions of Christensen and Mycielski. The main results are: in many (most?) non-locally-compact Polish groups, the ideal of shy sets does not satisfy the countable chain condition (i.e., there exist uncountably many disjoint non-shy Borel sets); in function spaces $C(^ω 2,G)$ where G is an abelian Polish group, the set of functions f which are highly non-injective is non-shy, and even prevalent if G is locally compact.

Preview: Bergson noted that the cinematographic image does not really move. It is, then as now, a series of still photographs. The real motion in such images is produced by machinery, which imparts a kinesis, an energy of movement, to the succession of fixed images. Our perception then endows such images with their “life,” insofar as they can be said to possess life. It is an illusion, it is “virtual” both as space and time. The real duration, as generated by the machinery or as lived by the perceiver is part of a broader system of images that includes those still photographs and their succession. Images of images of images, by the time they are processed by our bodies and appear to our mind’s eye as inhibited acts we have not enacted.

It seeped down from theoretical physics through the social sciences, as “the problem of the observer”, then to popular culture and finally into the daily vocabularies of the developed world. The effort simultaneously to know both the position and velocity of a sub-atomic particle became a symbol of the way that all of our efforts to know are disturbed by the very effort we exert in the task.

The prevalence of permutations with infinite cycles

Opis:
A number of recent papers have been devoted to the study of prevalence, a generalization of the property of being of full Haar measure to topological groups which need not have a Haar measure, and the dual concept of shyness. These concepts give a notion of "largeness" which often differs from the category analogue, comeagerness, and may be closer to the intuitive notion of "almost everywhere." In this paper, we consider the group of permutations of natural numbers. Here, in the sense of category, "almost all" permutations have only finite cycles. In contrast, we show that, in terms of prevalence, "almost all" permutations have infinitely many infinite cycles and only finitely many finite cycles; this set of permutations comprises countably many conjugacy classes, each of which is non-shy.

Preview: This is a relatively brief reflection on where we are with our “culture” in the present, a time when Politics has done a great deal of damage to our communicative purposes and hopes. Our culture has become a “post-culture,” we believe, in a sense to be defined here. It is hard enough to say what one means by “culture,” so the challenge of describing what “post-culture” means will be greater. It should be attempted because there has been a deep-seated change, in recent decades, in how human beings interpret themselves. The rate of change has accelerated even in just the last ten years. We create culture for many lesser reasons, but the over-arching reasons for our efforts all relate to knowing who and what we are and why we exist at all – what is our purpose? Culture is our attempt to address both our hopes and doubts.

Preview: In the United States Higher Education is undergoing a rapid change. Some aspects of this change are welcome, some are simply the inevitable march of progress, and some changes are troubling. The keepers of the humanities in every generation must consider all three sorts of change and adjust to them as required for the flourishing (or at least the maintenance) of humanistic thought as a presence and an active factor in civilization. The very rapidity of the current changes makes that duty a difficult one in the present. The concomitant result may fairly be called an emerging crisis in education in the US, and the situation is likely to spread to Europe and to the rest of the world where educational institutions are obliged to exist alongside of corporate-dominated capitalism. The tendency toward the welfare state in many nations will slow and perhaps counteract these problematic developments, but it is fair to say that the more powerful corporate capitalism becomes, and the more it absorbs the political machinery of the nation state to its ends, the more difficulty the educational establishment will encounter in maintaining the kind of education that is more than mere training of persons for service to the corporate machinery. Obviously, the humanities, as they have existed historically, do not seem to be necessary to the coming corporatized university.

Opis:
We analyze and cite applications of various, loosely related notions of uniformity inherent to the phenomenon of (multiple) recurrence in ergodic theory. An assortment of results are obtained, among them sharpenings of two theorems due to Bourgain. The first of these, which in the original guarantees existence of sets {x,x+h,$x+h^{2}$} in subsets E of positive measure in the unit interval, with lower bounds on h depending only on m(E), is expanded to the case of arbitrary finite polynomial configurations in subsets of positive measure in cubes of $ℝ^{n}$. The second is a direct computation of a lower bound, uniform in a and b and depending only on ∫f, for ∫f(x)f(x+at)f(x+bt)dxdt, where 0≤f≤1 is a function on the 1-torus. Our methodology parallels that of Bourgain, who originally considered the case a=1, b=2.

Suffering as an Ecumenical Paradigm in Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Edith Stein

Opis:
Edith Stein and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, were both twentieth century ‘martyrs,’ who experienced personal loss and suffering. However, it was suffering for others, deliberately chosen and consciously endured, that was of theological significance for both of them. This paper seeks to demonstrate that for Stein and Bonhoeffer suffering was understood by them as providing an essential example or model of Christian discipleship and that both utilised the expression Stellvertretung—vicarious suffering—to describe this. This theological interpretation of suffering for others illustrates a fundamental ecclesial reality which is of ecumenical significance because of its Christological significance, which is why such suffering transcends confessional and denominational differences and is of paradigmatic significance. Furthermore, this paper will suggest that both Stein and Bonhoeffer understood that the Christian disciple, in vicarious suffering, becomes a Schuldübernahme: a bearer of the sins of others.

This paper investigates the history and construction of paper armor, tracing its roots from Tang dynasty China, across Asia and India and into Western Europe. Source material is examined in detail to provide clues as to paper's first use in armor, how its construction style evolved, its migration, and effectiveness against period weapons from its point of origin through nineteenth century. While paper armor was by no means invulnerable, provided an inexpensive defense against swords, arrows, spears and even muskets for over a thousandyears.

Opis:
Aleksandr Dugin is sometimes called “Putin’s brain,” and there can be no question that Putin’s global strategy for expanding Russian power has followed quite precisely a strategic plan created, published, and advocated by Dugin beginning in 1996. This aggressive plan of political destabilization, economic hostage-taking, and ultimately militaristic invasions has been defended with a philosophical patchwork called “the Fourth Political Theory.” Dugin claims his “National Bolshevism” can stand alongside communism, fascism, and liberalism as a genuine contender in ontology, the philosophy of history, and political philosophy; and that it is the only theory that stands in genuine opposition to neo-liberalism and corporate capitalism. I show that this view, built from a distortion of Heidegger’s idea of “human-being” as Dasein, is not a coherent philosophy or worldview. I contrast it with personalism, which has always opposed the very aspects of communism, fascism, and liberalism that Dugin opposes, and does so quite effectively and without militarism, expansionism, or the need to take the nation state as some final end of human political development.
