Anselm Feuerbach był malarzem znanym, choć niepopularnym, po części klasycznym, ale też roman- tycznym i nowoczesnym. Rozczarowany niepowodzeniami postanowił pisemnie przedstawić koncepcję sztuki, którą chciał uprawiać. Przygotowany przez jego macochę, Henriettę Feuerbach materiał – Testament (Ein Ver- mächtnis) – to zbiór nowatorskich, niekiedy prekursorskich myśli o sztuce, często bliskich teoriom Konrada Fie- dlera, ale też nierzadko je porzucających w poszukiwaniu prawdziwej sztuki.
Anselm Feuerbach was a well-known but unpopular painter, partly classical but also romantic and modern. Disappointed by his failures, he decided to put into writing the concept of the art he wanted to create. The material prepared by his stepmother, Henrietta Feuerbach – Testament (Ein Vermächtnis) – is a collection of innovative, sometimes precursory thoughts about art, often close to the theories of Konrad Fiedler, but also often abandoning them in search for the true art.

Ekonomiczne uwikłania jednostki i języka w Wyznaniach Jeana-Jacques'a Rousseau" Szkic stanowi próbę ukazania zróżnicowania sposobów ewokacji i wieloznaczności problematyki ekonomicznej w Wyznaniach Jeana-Jacques’a Rousseau. Liczne motywy biograficzne wskazują paradoksalność sytuacji i wyborów autora Rozprawy o nierówności, jednocześnie kwestionującego społeczne funkcje pieniądza jako formę zniewolenia i poszukującego stabilizacji finansowej jako rękojmi wolności. Tekst Wyznań problematyzuje także kwestię relatywności stosunku pieniądza i towaru oraz braku samoistnej wartości pieniądza, jak również przeniesienie tej wizji na relacje międzyludzkie. Ekonomizację myślenia o świecie dostrzec można też w intensywnym dialogu z publicznością i w znaczeniu nadawanemu pismom autobiograficznym w walce o ustalenie własnej wartości w oczach czytelników.
"The Questions of Value. Economic Entaglements of the Individual and Language in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions" This article discusses the multiple ways in which the Confessions by Jean-Jacques Rousseau evokes finances, income, loss, and the worth of money itself. Born in the lower class, Rousseau vividly portrays the struggles caused by the 18th-century economy, which became one of the most important topics in his oeuvre. He treats money with intense ambivalence, accusing it of having a delinquent effect on society and each human being, while longing for a steady income with no need for work. On the other hand, he depicts money not as a measure of worth but as an empty sign that can be seen as a metaphor for the conventional nature of language. These observations pose questions how societies form their notion of worth and value.

Piotr Skarga was a Jesuit theologian, preacher, hagiographer, Catholic polemicist, one of the greatest prose writers of the Polish Renaissance, the author of, among others, famous the Kazania sejmowe. Thanks to the historical and literary legend created during the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and surviving to modern times, he became a symbol of a great priest – a patriot. There is a black legend of Piotr Skarga, in which he appears as a huge nietolerant and almost eager for blood of dissidents. There is no lack of objective studies on the other hand, along with a critical analysis of the works of Piotr Skarga.

Even though the character of Augustine’s mother, Monnica, has been studied from different angles, the students of the Confessions have not paid much attention to a curious image of her standing before the tribunal of God, which appears in Augustine’s prayer after her death. This short scene, which could be called the “trial of Monnica” is a carefully created passage, in which Augustine juxtaposes Pagan and Christian ethical ideas, probably alluding to Socrates’ trial and confronting the Christian attitude of his mother to that of the greatest of ancient sages. Augustine argues that Monnica should not respond to the Devil’s accusations and should not try to defend herself, because that would make her salvation impossible. On the contrary, abandoning of defense and loving trust in God’s mercy can save her soul from eternal damnation. This attitude is contrary to the proud self-defense of Socrates, who emphasized his innocence and moral perfection. Augustine’s image of Monnica before the court of God is an  expression of his idea of original sin and of human inability to achieve virtue without God’s grace, which is a significant break with the Pagan ethical tradition. The end of Book Nine is also an intriguing combination of such elements as the traditional idea of old age as the time of assessing one’s life, Roman rhetorical and judicial tradition, and integration of Biblical and philosophical truths into an original, influential Augustinian synthesis.

Artykuł podejmuje temat stworzenia, który obok filozoficznego zagadnienia szukania prawdy i teologiczno-duchowej  confessio stanowi jedno z głównych zagadnień  „Wyznań” Augustyna.  Najpierw autor wskazuje na ważność tego zagadnienia w tym dziele i poszukuje sposobu powiązania go z dwoma odmiennymi tematycznie częściami „Wyznań”, autobiograficzną i egzegetyczną. Dalej ukazuje Augustyna „krętą drogę” poszukiwania prawdy o Stwórcy i stworzeniu wiodącą przez czas błędów młodości i okres zagubienia się w sekcie manichejczyków (materializm, dualizm metafizyczny). Objaśnia zaistniałe u Augustyna, pod wpływem neoplatonizmu  doświadczenie „powrotu do samego siebie” i uzyskanie światła prawdy o Stwórcy i stworzeniu, a potem uzyskanie pod wpływem lektury Słowa Bożego łaski nawrócenia jako daru „nowego stworzenia”. W ostatniej części artykułu autor na podstawie ostatnich ksiąg „Wyznań” przybliża teologię i duchowość „nowego stworzenia” objaśniając je w sensie  dosłownym i alegorycznym. Artykuł podejmuje temat stworzenia, który obok filozoficznego zagadnienia szukania prawdy i teologiczno-duchowej  confessio stanowi jedno z głównych zagadnień  „Wyznań” Augustyna.  Najpierw autor wskazuje na ważność tego zagadnienia w tym dziele i poszukuje sposobu powiązania go z dwoma odmiennymi tematycznie częściami „Wyznań”, autobiograficzną i egzegetyczną. Dalej ukazuje Augustyna „krętą drogę” poszukiwania prawdy o Stwórcy i stworzeniu wiodącą przez czas błędów młodości i okres zagubienia się w sekcie manichejczyków (materializm, dualizm metafizyczny). The article aims at answering the question whether John Henry Newman (1801-1890), a prolific writer of the Victorian era, can be considered a wordsmith whose writing reached the highest degree of artistic mastery. The paper analyzes the most important genres Newman employed in his Anglican and Catholic periods of life, and subsequently presents the opinions of literary critics regarding the quality and value of his writing. Finally, the author examines the impact of Newmans literary works on culture and art, as well as on literature of both his era and in the centuries to follow.

Frantaisies amoureuses to anonimowa powieść w pierwszej osobie napisana w postaci jednego listu o charakterze wyznania miłosnego. Celem pracy jest wykazanie wpływu, jaki forma listu wywiera na refleksję autotematyczną w dziele i na przedstawienie życia wewnętrznego głównego bohatera. Nieznany pisarz-narrator zwraca się do swego przyjaciela, konkretnego odbiorcy listu, i proponuje mu podwójną zabawę epistolarną, w duchu już to humanistycznej korespondencji literackiej, już to lirycznego wyznania. Narrator wspomina, że jego list jest fragmentem szerszej wymiany epistolarnej, stąd cały szereg niedomówień, przemilczeń, niejasnych aluzji, które adresat rzekomo pojmuje w mgnieniu oka, ale które pozostają tajemnicą dla rzeczywistego czytelnika. Narrator oscyluje między chęcią wyrażenia swoich prawdziwych przeżyć a pragnieniem ukrycia ich pod powłoką literackości. Zdaniem autorki tworzy on "estetykę kłamstwa", którą dobitnie ukazują przejścia od śmiechu do płaczu. Wykorzystując dramatyczne i narracyjne możliwości konwencji epistolarnej, pisarz wciąga potencjalnego czytelnika w swoistą grę: wprowadza go w arkana sztuki literackiej, wiele wątków pozostawia jego domysłom, skrywa przed nim rzeczywiste uczucia głównego bohatera. Poprzez swą dwoistą budowę powieść Fantaisies amoureuses jest poszukiwaniem środków wyrazu dla przedstawienia subiektywnego świata przeżyć postaci literackiej, a oddzielając warstwę fabularną od refleksji nad sztuką narracji zapowiada autonomię współczesnej prozy powieściowej.

The article deals with the religious and confessional identity of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time of Ottoman and then the Austro-Hungarian authorities, and it is trying to define the elements of nationality in their identity. The reasons for initiating the rounding-up of three national identities in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Muslim/Bosniak, Croatian and Serbian) and not a common one are also highlighted. It identifies the external factors as well as the circumstances of the internal dynamics of society that have influenced the formation of the nation on the dominant principle of religious/confessional affiliation of the population.

According to Søren Kierkegaard, the development of Christianity is a history of going away from it, or at least of mitigating the criteria of belonging to it. Dane proposes two models of the trans confessional faith: (1) The recognition of the earthly life of Jesus Christ, of his death and resurrection, and nothing more. (2) The recognition of the faith as that which was defi ned above in the fi rst point and, additionally, on this basis of the choice of the Bible, which is possible as the secondary act related to the faith but not as its starting point. Moreover, all the interpretations of the beyond-confessional faith should be subjectively considered by a single individual. Kierkegaard mentions here some mystical elements. All the religious relationships should be personal in character. As far as the questions of faith and reason are concerned, the standpoint of Paulinism – either/or – is binding. Kierkegaard demands that the existing churches recognise themselves as representing the mitigated forms of Christianity; otherwise they have to undergo criticism. For him, the fi rst two centuries of the existence of Christianity are the ideal ones, and the personal model is the „witness of the truth”, of which he gives the detailed description. The increasing phenomenon of the trans-confessional faith has its roots in the civilisational changes (the secularization) as well as in the intensive manifestation, in the history of Christianity, of the practices which are inconsistent with the biblical background.

The article deals with issues concerning the pedagogical aims of studying traditional humanities in present realities of Polish society, which at the end of the 20th century overthrew communism. The new political and civilization conditions have caused major social changes that require a new approach to the humanities. Meanwhile, in Poland there is still a traditional and conservative cult of national identity and heritage, which prevents the development of an open society based on cultural tolerance and understanding of the differences that separate us from the West and other cultures. Humanities should be an academic tool for shaping an individual and creative personality and not for preserving national cultural and historical mythology. Such social pedagogy leads to a closed society oriented towards the past and not towards modernity. An educational policy that promotes this attitude treats cultural heritage as a tool of political control over society. In our times, humanities consist in discovering and interpreting the world around us and in forming an independent thinking. Literature, philosophy and other liberal arts cannot be just a sterile studying of a dead tradition.
