The goal of this paper is to present the results of the empirical analysis of the role of emerging Asian economies in the global market for business services. The focus is on India, as the leader in advanced business services in the region. The method applied in this paper is the quantitative analysis of data related to trade and foreign direct investment in services. The novelty of the paper lays in focusing on business services through their international exchange and activities of multinational corporations. This papers aims to focus on broader economic perspective rather than usual offshoring. The main conclusion of the paper is the rising role of services in economies that were previously focused on manufacturing and merchandise trade. Both due to the structural changes in foreign markets and home governments’ policies the process of tertiarisation is taking place. Special focus is on advanced business services which require and create vast amount of knowledge.

Opis:
Along with the dynamic development of the business services sector in Poland, both in terms of quantity (increase in the number of employees) and quality (increase in handling complex processes), the competence of employees and candidates to work becomes an important determinant of this process. The article analyzes reports on the sector of modern services and the labour market in the scope of desirable competencies of employees in the context of upcoming technological changes (Industry 4.0). As a result of the analysis, a catalogue of meta-competencies was identified, which are key from the point of view of the development of the business services sector and other branches of the modern economy.

The main goal of the paper is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) in advanced business services sector on economic development. We analyse the topic on the regional level as FDI in Poland is not equally distributed across the country. In order to investigate the research problem we estimate linear regression model using panel data. The dependent variable is the value of GDP per capita as the indicator of economic development. The most important independent variable from the point of view of the main objective of the paper is the number of foreign-owned advanced business services firms. This variable will be also lagged to control time necessary for investment to materialise and influence the economy. The main conclusion of the analysis of data over the period of 10 years is that there is a positive influence of operations of foreign-owned firms in the analysed sector on the economic growth of particular regions in Poland.

Poland has experienced a relatively large inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last two decades. FDI has been flowing mainly into services and manufacturing similarly to the trend observed in global capital movement. Within the services, the financial intermediation played the biggest role in terms of attracting FDI, but real estate and related business activities (legal, accounting, auditing, tax, marketing, etc.) also saw a high inflow of foreign capital. The paper analyzes the evolution of inward FDI stock in Poland over the period 1998–2012 with a particular emphasis on real estate and related business activities. It also discusses how Poland differs in terms of sectoral decomposition in the services of inward FDI stock from other Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries representing both Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and advanced economies. Finally, the paper answers the question how Poland is performing relative to other OECD members in terms of FDI attractiveness.

The aim of this paper is to study and compare the competitiveness of the new EU member states in international trade in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). The first part of the paper presents a definition of KIBS trade, indicators to measure competitiveness in international service trade, and a short review of research in this field. The second part of the study is empirical. First the author carries out an overall analysis of transactions on KIBS trade in the countries involved. Then the competitiveness of the new EU member states in KIBS export is studied (in total KIBS and in each category of KIBS). International competitiveness is measured by export performance, trade balance and the RCA index. The author compares the competitiveness in KIBS exports between the analyzed countries, and tries to answer the question whether it could have been positively affected by their accession to the EU. The paper uses the WTO database. The analyzed period covers the years 2000–2013, because data on particular categories of ‘Other business services’ have been available only since 2000. The analysis refers to the 12 countries that joined the EU in 2004 and 2007.

The strategic importance of the services has increased recently because many countries have turned into real service economy. This article aims to help managers to optimize their decision regarding the purchasing process of business services. The article starts with describing the business services and their importance. We concentrate our attention also to the important role that purchasing department has in the procurement process of the business services. Next, we present some findings from practice regarding to the implication of the purchasing department in the procurement of business services. Furthermore, the paper presents a conceptual framework that we developed for the optimization of the purchasing process of business services. At the end of the paper we present some recommendations for managers about how the way that they can optimize their decision regarding the purchasing process of business services. Key words: purchasing management, business services, optimization, management decision.
Strategiczne znaczenie usług wzrosło w ostatnim czasie, ponieważ wiele krajów zwróciło się ku realnej gospodarce usługowej. Celem tego artykułu jest wspomożenie menedżerów w optymalizacji ich decyzji dotyczących procesu zakupu usług biznesowych. Artykuł rozpoczyna się od opisu usług biznesowych i ich znaczenia. Koncentrujemy naszą uwagę na znaczeniu roli jaką pełni dział zakupów w procesie składania zamówień na usługi biznesowe. Następnie, prezentujemy niektóre wnioski płynące z praktyk dotyczących następstw mających miejsce w wyniku działań działu zakupów w zamawianiu usług biznesowych. Ponadto, artykuł prezentuje ramy koncepcyjne, które zostały opracowane w celu optymalizacji procesu zakupu usług biznesowych. Na zakończenie artykułu, prezentujemy kilka zaleceń dla menedżerów, dotyczących w jaki sposób mogą oni zoptymalizować swoje decyzje dotyczące procesu zakupu usług biznesowych.

Knowledge-intensive business services are one of the most dynamically developing areas in contemporary economies and at the same time they constitute one of the fundamental pillars of a knowledge economy. The services are provided by private enterprises, the activity of which is mostly based on the professional knowledge of workers. They supply knowledge-based products and services delivering satisfaction to intermediate demand. These are related, among others, to research and development activity, legal activity, activity in the sphere of architecture and engineering or information technology services. Interest in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) is a result of rapidly occurring changes in recent decades, the creation of a knowledge economy and an information society, the growing importance of knowledge and human capital as well as innovativeness. The goal of the article is to present the changes occurring in the sphere of KIBS in Poland between 2005 and 2012 with special attention focussed on employment and its forecast.

The article investigates the potential of regional initiatives supporting business clusters. It begins with an overview of Michael E. Porter’s concept of clusters and the impact competitive clusters can have on productivity, innovation, and employment. The author also briefly examines the ways clusters might be supported by local government. Next, the trends of outsourcing and offshoring, which influence the growth of business and technology services sector worldwide, are described. The third section focuses on a business services cluster in Kraków, Poland, which is now a key outsourcing destination in Europe. The final section draws on interviews with employees of 15 cluster-based companies conducted between August and December 2016. The goal of this research was better understand Kraków’s strengths and weaknesses as an outsourcing location, gather insights on ways to improve the local business environment, and obtain information about predicted changes in companies’ activities and management over the next few years.

The article is related to the growth of young companies operating in the business services for firms sector, that are listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange alternative market – NewConnect. The growth opportunity models are introduced to explain the growth process of these companies together with other controlling factors such as profitability, size of the company and its earnings. As the result of the research it is found that growth potential is negatively correlated with assets and equity growth in short term, but it affects positively earnings per share growth in a longer, three-year period. It can therefore be concluded that in the sector taken into consideration, investors’ decisions reflected in the growth potential measures may be translated into company’s value growth only in a longer term.

Aim/purpose – The aim of the research is to study key location factors and changes in motives for business service offshoring. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical research was conducted on a sample of 200 managers employed in business service centers in Poland. Findings – The results of the research confirm human capital as the most important basis for the location selection of business-service offshoring to Poland. The study has revealed that the pursuit of cost reduction is currently the most important motive for the relocation of business services to Poland. It has been shown that the motives for business service offshoring undergo evolution. The importance of salary arbitrage is diminishing, while other motives are becoming increasingly crucial. In the near future, efficiency improvement and service quality are expected to become more important than cost reduction, while innovation improvement is expected to grow at the fastest rate. Research implications/limitations – In the global economy, the location of business services is becoming the subject of increasingly free choice. Transnational corporations transferring their business services implement various location strategies in search of specific advantages that reflect their expectations. The findings of the study could be extended to other transition economics. Originality/value/contribution – It is one of a few empirical studies on the evolution of motives for business service offshoring worldwide and the first performed in Poland, which has become an important host location for business service offshoring in Europe.

The aim of this article is to study and compare the importance of intermediate demand for KIBS and to examine the relation between KIBS intensity and innovativeness in the EU countries. The study refers to all the EU countries, which gives an opportunity of comparative analysis between countries, in particular between EU-15 and EU-12. The data are derived from the World Input-Output Database (WIOD) and the European Innovation Scoreboard. The analyzed period covers the years 2000–2014 (with respect to KIBS intensity), and 2002–2014 (with respect to innovativeness), which is determined by the availability of relevant data. The empirical study shows that among the EU-15 countries only those with high income can be characterized by a higher level of KIBS intensity and innovativeness than the EU-12 countries. The statistical research shows that there is a positive, statistically signifi cant correlation between KIBS intensity in the economy and its innovativeness, measured by the Summary Innovation Index.

The aim of this paper is to show that the main driving force behind the dynamic development of international service trade in recent years was an increasing role of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) in this trade. The first part of the paper focus on indicating main factors that have contributed to rapid growth of KIBS in service trade, defining KIBS trade and presenting a short review of related research. The second part of the study is empirical. The author shows an increasing role of KIBS in world service exports, as well as studies the situation in different groups of countries. The analysis refers to the exports of total KIBS and of each KIBS categories. The paper uses UNCTAD database. The analyzed period usually covers the years 2000-2013, because data on individual components of Other services have been available since 2000.
Celem pracy jest pokazanie, iż główną siłą napędową dynamicznego rozwoju międzynarodowego handlu usługami w ostatnich latach był wzrastający udział usług biznesowych opartych na wiedzy (KIBS) w tej wymianie. Pierwsza część pracy koncentruje się na wskazaniu czynników, które przyczyniły się do wzrostu znaczenie KIBS w wymianie międzynarodowej, zdefiniowaniu handlu KIBS oraz przeglądzie dotychczasowych badań w tym obszarze. Druga część pracy ma charakter empiryczny. Autorka pokazuje wzrastającą rolę KIBS w światowym eksporcie usług, jak również analizuje sytuację w poszczególnych grupach krajów. Analiza odnosi się do eksportu KIBS ogółem oraz poszczególnych kategorii KIBS. W pracy wykorzystano dane z UNCTAD. Analizowany okres to na ogół lata 2000- -2013, ponieważ od 2000 roku dostępne są dane na temat handlu w poszczególnych kategoriach Pozostałych usług.
