Individuals with intellectual disabilities constitute a large part of the population in which significant disorders of linguistic communication are noted. In characterizing their communication capabilities, observable difficulties in forming long utterances are emphasised. This article discusses the possibility of using syntax saturation ratio, allowing for determination of the grammatical complexity degree of utterances, in descriptions of the linguistic skills of intellectually-disabled children.Key words: syntax saturation ratio, word phrases, intellectual disability

Opis:
Results from a series of five surveys among five groups of international climate scientists about their evaluation of elements of climate models and of climate change are presented. The first survey was done in 1996, the latest in 2015/16. Thus, our snapshots of the opinions of climate scientists cover 20 years. The results describe a strong increase in agreement concerning issues of manifestation of climate change, i.e., that the warming is real and not influenced by changing measuring and reporting practices, and concerning attribution of this ongoing climate change to ongoing anthropogenic causes. On the other hand, the evaluation of the climate models has changed little in the past 20 years. There are still significant reservations with the models ability to incorporate clouds and to describe rainfall. Obviously the growing conviction of ongoing man-made climate change is based on a variety of explanations, with modelling not being the predominant line of evidence. We suggest that it may be the repeated assessments by the IPCC, based on paleoclimatic evidence and stringent statistical analysis of the instrumental record which have led to the growing consensus of the warming and its causation. We stress that the presented results concern the opinion of climate scientists with a rather broad background. Our results do not assess if the opinions of the surveyed scientists are “valid” or “right”, but they recognize the character of science being a social process.

This paper presents the results of: 1. measurements of selected parameters determining the rate of utterances, 2. comparative analyses of specific parameters in two study groups: physiologically ageing people, falling into the “old-old” category, and nine-year-old pupils with no developmental or language disorders. When gathering the study material with the use of measurement tools (the Audacity program) and its statistical processing (tests: Shapiro–Wilk, Mann–Whitney, Fisher–Snadecor), the following parameters-indicators allowing the prediction of the speech tempo were taken into consideration and analysed: 1. basic: the average speaking rate (speech sounds, syllables + duration of pauses), the average articulation rate (speech sounds, syllables), the average share of pauses in utterances (number + percentage data); 2. supplementary: the average duration of all pauses, the average duration of proper pauses, the average duration of filled pauses, the average duration of partly filled pauses.

Opis:
This paper examines the shoreline management planning policy in England and its suitability for ameliorating the diverse environmental problems associated with Nigeria‟s coastal zones. It examines the success of SMPs in England since the mid-1990s and progress achieved, with the aim of understudying the current management approach that can be transferred to Nigeria to strengthen its adoption, and as a necessary corollary, implementation of the SMPs. This paper also examines key elements of the shoreline management frameworks in England and provides answers to the question: Would shoreline management planning approach in England be appropriate and feasible in Nigeria? It further concludes that many of the action plans and principles of participation should be adoptable provided that a participatory approach that involves all stakeholders including community members and relevant sectoral ministries as well as appropriate legal framework is encouraged.

The speech of people with intellectual disability remains to be a little-explored areaof linguistic research. The article involves a description of the range of active vocabulary ofchildren with intellectual disability to a mild, moderate or severe degree. In three study trials, speech samples of subjects with intellectual disability as well as children of typical developmentwere obtained. Word declinations and then lexemes were distinguished. On the basis of thecollected data, the average use of words was determined and a statistical analysis was conductedin order to indicate significant differences between the compared groups.

Opis:
The aim of the article was to evaluate the rate of speech of people at an advanced old age and without any demential illnesses when compared to the control group of 9-years-old children without any developmental disorders. Because of the fact that the control group consisted of children, we have also made references to the notion of elderspeak – a phenomenon similar to the baby-talk – but related to the way younger people talk to senior citizens. We tested the rate of speech in 32 subjects: the experimental group comprising 16 healthy people of an advanced old age without any neurodevelopmental illnesses (the average age: 83.1) and the control group, which included 16 children without any developmental disorders (the average age: 9.0) in order to achieve a correlation in terms of the male/female ratio for the comparative analysis. The analysed parameters included: the speaking rate, the articulation rate, the numer of pauses, and the ratio of pauses within the speech samples. The estimative quantitative analysis showed insignificant differences in the parameters that influence the rate of speech in both groups. The statistical analysis also showed that there were no significant differences in the main research parameters – the speaking rate, the articulation rate, the number of pauses, and the ratio of pauses. The research hypotheses regarding the differences in the speech rate of those at an advanced old age and of the children at the age of 9 were negated by the results of the ana lyses. It has been proven that the rate of speech of the elderly who age physiologically does not differ from the rate of speech production by the children.

Opis:
The object under study was retrofitted in the late 1990s with the aim to upgrade the quality of the water sent to the distribution system in general, and the removal efficiency for iron, manganese and ammonia nitrogen in particular. The taken-in water, which comes predominantly from the Quaternary aquifer, is classified as "hard water" because of the high concentrations of iron, manganese and ammonium nitrogen (5.0 gFe/m[3], 1.5 gMn/m[3] and 2.0 gN/m[3]). The water treatment train made use of prior to the retrofit (which included aeration and single-stage filtration) yielded only iron removal to the level of about 0.3 gFe/m[3]; the concentrations of the other investigated compounds still exceeded considerably the admissible values, as they ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 gMn/m[3] and from 0.9 to 2.0 gN/m[3]. Following analysis of the pilot-plant results, an additional filtration stage, which involved a mature high-silica sand bed, was proposed. The retrofit of the treatment plant brought about a noticeable improvement of water quality. The concentrations of iron, manganese and ammonia nitrogen in the treated water amounted to 0.2 gFe/m[3], 0.05 gMn/m[3] and 0.2 gN/m[3], respectively. However owing to the incomplete separation of the tanks and to the distribution of mixed water (after the first and second stage of filtration), the concentration of manganese in the tap water slightly exceeds the admissible values.

Opis:
Observed demographic changes mean that we are becoming a ‘greying society.’ This makes it necessary to introduce new curriculum content in the vocational training of speech therapists and creates a need for specialists in the area of therapy and functional assistance of seniors. At the same time, this indicates the need for conducting extensive studies in the field of gerontological linguistics, concerning the particularities of speech related to age as well as the specific features of communication with the elderly. In this speech the authors would like to discuss one of the directions of research on language phenomena related to old age, i.e. research on the particular manner of communication of those in the senior’s close environment (family, doctors, therapists, among others) with the senior. The style of communication with a person of senior age, being a result of social stereotypes of elderly people, may increase their discomfort and indicate paternalistic and condescending treatment of those in the highest age group. This may even be a sign of ageism, i.e. social discrimination based on people’s age.
