Opis:
During the political changes in Vilnius County, i.e. in the territory of the Second Polish Republic (1922–1926) with the capital in Vilnius, after 1914 the Polish society hoped for full acceptance of educational institutions, operating illegally before the outbreak of WWI. Despite significant difficulties created by the German occupier, Polish education – both general and secondary – was organized. It was mean feat primarily due to the lack of teachers. In the early 20th century, two schools preparing for the teaching profession operated in Vilnius: the Nazareth Sisters and an institution organized by Agata Karpowiczówna. Recognizing the need to educate teachers, a school for women named after Queen Jadwiga was founded in 1916, and soon afterwards the Education Committee established five more schools. Meanwhile, junior and senior high schools were also established in Vilnius. On the basis of archival research carried out by the authors of the article in the Lithuanian State Historical Archive in Vilnius, numerous applications and biographies of candidates for educators, primarily in the Vilnius area, were collected and presented. This documentation is diverse as it consists of surveys regarding personal data and the course of work, applications handwritten by the candidates, opinions of former superiors but also correspondence on the basis of which. the candidate’s studies and work can be reconstructed. The above-mentioned documentation comes from 1919–1923 i.e. a period of slow stabilization of education in the area in question.

The Vilnius City Hall’s leading publication, “Biblioteczka Wileńska” Series, was published during 1929–1938. The initiative to publish it came from the Cultural and Educational Commission of the Vilnius City Council. The publishing house aimed to encourage scholars to undertake research on various aspects of the history of the city of Vilnius and to spread such knowledge in wider circles of society. Nine books were published in this series between 1929 and 1938. Except for the professor of the Stefan Batory University, literary historian Stanisław Pigoń, and the head of the State Archives in Warsaw, Major Bolesław Waligóra, the authors were young researchers and graduates of the Faculty of Humanities of the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius: Maria Łowmiańska, Sara Rabinowiczówna, Janina Rodkiewiczówna, Stefan Rosiak, Irena Zaleska-Stankiewiczowa, Bogumił Zwolski, Leonid Żytkowicz. Their work significantly contributed to the knowledge of Vilnius’ history and the general academic achievements of Vilnius historians in the interwar period.

We know the most about the Vilnius Section of the Polish Otorhinolaryngological Society because the protocols of the section meetings have been preserved. According to the protocols, 58 sessions were held during the 16 years of the Vilnius Section’s existence. During the entire period of the Section’s activity, over 250 different clinical cases were demonstrated, and more than 30 papers, inventions, new therapeutic and surgical methods were discussed and presented. Colleagues shared their experience gained abroad, internships held in foreign centers; participation in congresses in Poland and abroad were discussed. On September 26–29, 1929 as part of the 13th Congress of Polish Doctors and Naturalists in Vilnius, the Vilnius Section organized the VIII National Congress of the Society and a Section meeting.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to attempt to explain the activities of the Communist Party of Western Belarus in Vilnius during the fi rst half of the thirties of the twentieth century. The author’s aim is to show the organisation, theory and practice of this illegal party. Further-more, the intention is to present the activities of Vilnius police towards communist sym-pathizers and activists. Founded in 1923 in Vilnius, the Communist Party of Western Belaruswas a branch of The Communist Party of Poland. This organization like the polish communist party was illegal. Its aim was to combat the Polish state and to perform electioneering for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Although the name of the party could indicate a desire for independence of Belarus, in practice it was for the removal of the north eastern provinces of the Second Republic of Poland to the USSR. CPWB activity had a special dimension in Vilnius. As the region’s largest city and former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnus was home for many nations, religions and cultures. Moreover, Vil-nius was the most important fi eld for communist action. Given the number of inhabitants, industrialized multi-ethnic character, communists had the opportunity to develop wide subversive and conspiratorial work. In addition, the city was the great centre of production and distribution of communist publications, which allowed the spread of propaganda in both its administrative boundaries and in the Vilnius Voivodeship.

Opis:
The three universities – Poznań and Vilnius in Poland, Kaunas in Lithuania – had much in common: all three were founded in 1919, each promised studies in mathematics, and none possessed a native mathematician of its own. Mathematicians had to be taken from a far. Poznań relied on Zdzisław Krygowski (1872-1955), a newcomer from the Lvov polytechnic, who in the next twenty years laboriously worked up programs of studies and collected academic staff. Teaching was satisfactory (there was a course in cryptography, students of which have later broken the German Enigma) but research rather modest. In Vilnius there happened to be Wiktor Staniewicz (1866-1932), a refugee from the polytechnic in Petersburg. Being rather old and ill, he required support and that came in persons of Juliusz Rudnicki (1881-1948) and Stefan Kempisty (1892-1940), both from the Warsaw polytechnic. The three men secured satisfactory level of studies but only the arrival of Antoni Zygmund (1900-1992) in 1930 and his briliant student Józef Marcinkiewicz (1910-1940) changed the picture by adding a high level research. Kaunas offered a chair to a German mathematician Otto Volk (1881-1989) who worked there 1923-1930, offered good teaching and secured further development. Although following different roots, all three universities succeeded and the article offers some insight into their specific stories.

Józef Zawadzki, the Vilnius bookseller and the editor, the animator of many important publishing undertakings, contributed extremely effectively to sustaining and the development of the scientific‑literary movement in Lithuania in the partition age. Moreover, he became involved very actively in coming into existence and publishing periodicals. He spared no effort to publish “Vilnius Daily” (in both periods of appearing it) or “Vilnius Literary Newspaper”. All action taken in this direction resulted from Zawadzki’s belief that magazines would influence the cultural life of the country very positively and be a place of the constructive criticism, as well as publishing and book advertisements. He cared about it both as the experienced editor, for whom the evaluation of published work was extremely helpful in gradual developing publishing successive initiatives, and for the bookseller caring for the information about the available writing production so that it could get through to the widest circle of recipients and arouse their interest.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to establish which psychosocial factors at work are related to depression among female white-collar workers in Vilnius. Materials and Methods: The data was collected in a case-control study in 2002-2004. The cases were selected from patients treated at Vilnius mental health centers. The controls were randomly selected from employed Vilnius residents. A descriptive statistic and logistic regression was applied. Results: 3 psychosocial factors and possible confounders within the evaluated model were statistically reliable (model χ²: 44.47, p < 0.05 ). The adjusted odds ratio for uneven work distribution was 2.17 (95% CI: 1.38-3.51, p < 0.005), the odds ratio for possibility to control was 10.81 (95% CI: 2.13-54.71, p < 0.005), and the odds ratio for family esteem was 2.13 (95% CI: 1.01-4.59, p < 0.005). Conclusion: This study suggests that work distribution, possibility to control and family esteem, together with stressful life events and mental health disorders in the family, are related to depression among female white-collar workers.

The myth of the founding of the city of Vilnius became particularly important in Lithuanian art in the decade of the restoration of independence. After a long period of occupation, the capital of Lithuania became not only a catalyst for new formulations of national and civic identity, but also a symbol of freedom. The landscape and architecture of the Old Town of Vilnius embody the archaic Baltic imagination, which is not upstaged but, on the contrary, complemented by the Christian world of Vilnius. The restoration of independence activated the archaic Baltic imagination in Lithuanian art and literature as this kind of imagination had nurtured Lithuanians’ national self-awareness over centuries. This article focuses on two modern Lithuanian prose writers, Antanas Ramonas (1947–1993) and Ričardas Gavelis (1950–2002), whose works evoke the two most striking and different images of the same mythical Vilnius – divine and demonic, hopeful and hopeless. These two opposing images of mythical Vilnius reveal two different viewpoints on the world, on history and on the human being in modern Lithuanian literature.
