Opis:
Theoretical background: A sports career is a specific activity because it starts at an early age, lasts a relatively short time, and usually athletes are most successful when their peers are just starting to develop their typical professional careers. In previous research on the second careers of ex-athletes, mainly the top performers were described, forgetting that many athletes play in the lower leagues and sport is also their main profession. In this study, athletes who played at different levels of competition were analysed. Purpose of the article: The article aims to determine how the length of a sports career affects the second professional career of former athletes. Research methods: The studied population were Polish basketball players of working-age after finishing their sports careers. The survey was conducted online in 2021 and 301 people took part in it. The average duration of a sports career of participants was 10.13 years. Former basketball players were divided into 2 groups according to their career length. The first group consisted of those whose basketball careers lasted at least 10 years (160 people), and the second group consisted of those whose careers were shorter than 10 years (141 people). Main findings: Former players whose sports careers lasted for at least 10 years are more satisfied with them than those whose sports careers were shorter, but they assess their current career prospects worse. It may result from the fact that among those whose sports careers were shorter, a greater percentage have higher education. The results also show that those whose basketball careers were longer, are now more likely to work in the field of sport. In conclusion, it can be said that earlier retirement from sports, favours to a greater extent university graduating and also allows a faster transition to a second professional career.

Second Polish Republic, Judge’s career, Bialystok district
Opis:
This collection of memories depicts the background of the pre-war legal career of the well-known Polish civil law judge, Witold Święcicki. His experiences range from his family background and childhood; his exile to Russia in 1905; his studies; the beginnings of his professional career; marriage; and repatriation in 1918. Successive posts held by Witold Święcicki during the Second Polish Republic, as well as positions on editorial boards of legal periodicals with which he co-worked, are listed. However, more important is the description of the functioning of the judge’s house, in particular his limited social contacts, which were reduced to the group of former, current or future related lawyers. German occupation stories are sourced from his daughter’s coverage of events. A combination of historical events, which twice brought Witold Święcicki to the Bialy- stok district, are detailed. The memoir ends in 1944. The career circumstances for Witold Święcicki, were typical of the Second Polish Republic.

Opis:
In reference to cultural patterns in collectivistic societies, teaching and learning are greatly influenced by the teachers’ collectivistic or individualistic cultural orientation (Kaur & Noman, 2015). However, in dealing with both audiences and their teaching platforms, a chasm appears between methodologies and their applications since collectivistic societies are reluctant to accept methodologies perceived as mere Western innovations. In other words, a seemingly pedagogical incongruence arises where direct individualistic Western influence is perceived as unsuitable to a collectivistic mindset. One must keep in mind that family members in collectivist societies, who view themselves as part of a group rather than independent individuals, seem to feel more interdependent and mutually responsible for each other. In addition to Vygotski’s assertion that children’s cognitive development is enriched through social interaction with more skilled individuals (1978), Bandura (1982) emphasizes that the degree to which learners believe in their own self-efficacy influences their functioning cognitively, motivationally, emotionally, and their decision making process. Also, self-efficacy is perceived to accelerate the process of adapting to a new environment while learners adopt new cultural practices and consent to norms and expectations. In our exploration, second-language learners (SLLs) from collectivistic societies advance academically—English as a second language included—within the frame of sociocultural theory, since they seem to be motivated by their culturally- induced sense of obligation to honor their parents and other group members. These SLLs are positively influenced by their prior experiences with the group’s perceptions and expectations of their capability to learn an additional language (Bandura & Schunk, 1981; Schunk, 1991). Our research seems to indicate that this outcome is significantly affected by the self-efficacy and self-reliance produced by prior successes in challenging tasks that may have been mandated by the SLL’s elders. In addition, SLLs also seem to succeed in accomplishing more challenging goals as they observe their families’ values and traditions even when they are in a society that enforces individualistic values.

Opis:
Wyróżniono trzy drogi zdobycia niezależności: 1) przygotowanie do zawodu, dającego pewną możliwość podjęcia pracy zarobkowej; 2) kształcenie artystyczne; 3) naukę niejako „dla siebie”, z motywów autotelicznych. Prezentowany artykuł szczegółowo omawia pierwszą z owych dróg, poczynając od planów i oczekiwań bohaterek, poprzez okres studiów, aż do momentu podjęcia pracy zawodowej.
The article shows how the process of emancipation has been perceived by the minor (‘minorum gentium’) female novelists of the time, and indirectly – by their female readers, whose expectations surely did matter to the authors. The text concerns a fragment of a larger phenomenon – the chances of gaining an education which would allow the heroines of eight selected novels to function in the areas of job market previously occupied mostly or solely by men. Three different ways of gaining independence were distinguished: 1) learning a profession which would ensure a gainful employment; 2) artistic education; 3) an education, as it were, ‘for oneself’, without any further plans. In the following paper I have concentrated on the first of the abovementioned paths, starting from the plans and expectations of the heroines, through the period of studies up to the moment of starting work.
