The paper discusses the historical and methodological background of Chomsky’s generative enterprise. It briefly characterizes the context in which generative grammar developed, concentrating on Frege’s logic and linguistic structuralism (Saussure’s and Bloomfield’s), and points to the differences in these approaches. The main part of the paper discusses the notion of language as defined by Chomsky, from his earlier writings (such as Syntactic Structures, 1957), through Government and Binding theory, to the more recent Minimalist Program, and studies concerned with biolinguistcs. The major claim of the paper is that the early model of generative grammar, especially its formalism and description of generative mechanisms (phrase structure rules, transformations, account of natural language recursion) has survived the test of time. Whether this will be the case with the biolinguistic claims of the more recent developments within generative grammar remains to be seen.

In this paper, we place some left restrictions on derivations in CD grammar systems with phrase- structure grammars, controlled by the regular languages. The first restriction requires that every production is always applied within the first k nonterminals in every sentential form, for some $k \ge 1$. The second restriction says how many blocks of non-terminals can be in each sentential form. The third restriction extends the second restriction and says how many blocks of non-terminals with limited length can be in each sentential form. We demonstrate that under these restrictions, the grammar systems generate different families of languages. Indeed, under the first restriction, these systems generate only context-free languages. Under the second restriction, even one-component systems characterize the entire family of recursively enumerable languages. In the end, the family of languages generated by grammar systems under the third restriction is equal to the family of languages generated by programmed grammars with context-free rules without $\epsilon$- rules of nite index.

Chomskyan revolution in Bulgarian socio-cultural and linguistic environment The term Chomskyan revolution, referring to the innovative current in modern American linguistics and Noam Chomsky as it’s leading figure, permeated the metaphorical imagery of the popular linguistic and socio-cultural spheres in the USA. This term actually surpassed specialized linguistic circles, where it designated Chomsky’s transformational-generative grammar model and normally appeared in quotation marks. However, although Chomskyan revolution came to occupy a central position in the American network of unquestioned cultural mythologemes, its Bulgarian reception was different. The overall impression in Bulgarian linguistic and socio-cultural circles regarding the revolutionary leap has been rather skeptical and reserved, although the Chomskyan grammar model itself has been introduced into research practice. Such a difference in attitudes towards the status of transformational-generative grammar in the source and a target country is discussed here in terms of motivations and basic positions. Rewolucja Chomsky’ego w bułgarskim środowisku społeczno-kulturowym i lingwistycznymTermin „rewolucja Chomsky'ego”, odnoszący się do całkowicie nowatorskiego nurtu współczesnego językoznawstwa amerykańskiego i Chomsky'ego jako jego wiodącej postaci, przeniknął do popularnej sfery językowej i społeczno-kulturowej w USA jako część ich metaforycznego imaginarium. Przekroczył on niejako granice wyspecjalizowanych środowisk lingwistycznych, które standardowo zapisywały go w cudzysłowie, i ostatecznie wyznaczył model gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej Chomsky'ego. Chociaż „rewolucja Chomsky’ego” stała się centralnym elementem amerykańskiej siatki niekwestionowanych mitologemów kulturowych, środowisko bułgarskie zareagowało inaczej. Ogólna opinia bułgarskich środowisk językoznawczych i społeczno-kulturowych na temat rewolucyjnego skoku była dość sceptyczna i pełna zastrzeżeń, chociaż sam model gramatyki Chomsky'ego został wprowadzony do praktyki badawczej. Przedmiotem artykułu jest właśnie ta odmienność postaw pod względem motywacji i stanowisk zajmowanych wobec statusu gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej w kraju źródłowym i kraju odbiorcy.

In the field of ocean engineering, the task of spatial hull modelling is one of the most complicated problems in ship design. This study presents a procedure applied as a generative approach to the design problems for the hull geometry of small vessels using elements of concurrent design with multi-criteria optimisation processes. Based upon widely available commercial software, an algorithm for the mathematical formulation of the boundary conditions, the data flow during processing and formulae for the optimisation processes are developed. As an example of the application of this novel approach, the results for the hull design of a sailing yacht are presented.

Underwater image enhancement has been receiving much attention due to its significance in facilitating various marine explorations. Inspired by the generative adversarial network (GAN) and residual network (ResNet) in many vision tasks, we propose a simplified designed ResNet model based on GAN called efficient GAN (EGAN) for underwater image enhancement. In particular, for the generator of EGAN we design a new pair of convolutional kernel size for the residual block in the ResNet. Secondly, we abandon batch normalization (BN) after every convolution layer for faster training and less artifacts. Finally, a smooth loss function is introduced for halo-effect alleviation. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our methods accomplish considerable improvements compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Im Beitrag werden die linguistischen Ansätze angefangen von de Saussure, über Chomsky bis hin zu kartographischen Forschungen von Rizzi und Cinque diskutiert. Die Sprachwissenschaft wird nach den Befürwortern der generativen Transformationsgrammatik als ein Teil der Psychologie verstanden und auf das Mentale ausgerichtet. Es wird dabei auf die Darstellung der Geschichte der Linguistik verzichtet, stattdessen konzentriert sich der Beitrag auf die Grundlagen der Entstehung und Entwicklung der generativen Transformationsgrammatik. Anschließend werden die Grundsätze einer der jüngsten Theorien, und zwar des kartographischen Ansatzes angesprochen, der im Vergleich zum Minimalistischen Vergleich Chomskys eine erweiterte Struktur der funktionalen Kategorien postuliert und infolgedessen komplexere und gleichzeitig universal gültig propagierte syntaktische Hierarchien annimmt. Der CFC-Ansatz wurde in der Kartographie vielschichtiger ausgebaut und schlägt ein Projekt der funktionalen Projektionen dar.
W artykule omówiono teorie lingwistyczne od de Saussure’a poprzez Chomsky’ego aż do modelu kartograficznego Rizzi’ego i Cinque’a. Według zwolenników gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej lingwistyka rozumiana jest jako część psychologii, ściśle związanej ze zjawiskiem mentalnym. W pracy pominięto opis historii lingwistyki, koncentrując się na podstawach powstawania i rozwoju gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej. Następnie przedstawiono jedną z najnowszych teorii, a mianowicie model kartograficzny, który w porównaniu z Programem Minimalistycznym Chomsky’ego postuluje rozszerzoną strukturę kategorii funkcjonalnych i w rezultacie zakłada bardziej rozbudowane struktury składniowe. Kartografia proponuje zatem rozszerzenie lewej peryferii i przedstawia rozwinięty projekt rzutowania kategorii funkcjonalnych.
This article discusses linguistic approaches from de Saussure trough Chomsky to cartographic approach by Rizzi and Cinque. According to the proponents of transformational-generative grammar, linguistics is understood as a part of the psychology and is oriented towards the mental. The article focuses on the evolution of transformational-generative grammar. Furthermore the principles of one of the most recent theories, namely the cartographic approach were presented, which, in comparison to Chomsky’s Minimalist Program, postulates an extended structure of the functional categories and consequently assumes more complex and universally valid propagated syntactic hierarchies. The CFC in cartography has become more complex and this new approach proposes a project of functional projections. The author presents the evolution of transformational-generative grammar. The study ends with a summary of principles of one of the last theories, the cartographic approach.

The constant development of all areas of human life forces the continuity of an awareness limited to individual selected issue, but also imposes searches in broader fields of science. The same phenomenon also did not miss the architectural design. Dynamism of changes and participation, among others, mathematics, computer sciences or biology design entered confusion and false perception of the definition of the new methods of design. The main goal of the article is to organize the principles that govern parametric, generative, evolutionary, bionic or organic design. The basis for distinguishing between these issues is to define the objectives of the initial formation of a solid object. Evolution of changes in modern design techniques is also a great record of the history of human conscious creation of an architectural form.

Der Beitrag präsentiert Anna Pilarskis Buch „Das Nullsubjekt im Polnischen. Dependenzielle Verbgrammatik und Generative Transformationsgrammatik im Modellvergleich“, in dem zwei Grammatikmodelle, die in der modernen Linguistik vertreten sind, miteinander verglichen werden sollen. Die Autorin betont ausdrücklich, dass sie keines von ihnen einer Kritik aussetzt und auch keines bevorzugt. Einer detaillierten Analyse unterzieht sie subjektlose Konstruktionen mit inkorporierter, kontextbedingter, rollenprominenter, referentieller und transformationsbedingter Subjektrealisiation. Dem Leser wird während der Lektüre jedoch sichtbar, dass sowohl die GTG als auch die DVG vor allem abgetrennt existieren und keines von den beiden Modellen im Stande ist, allein alle Aspekte des Nullsubjekts im Polnischen zu beschreiben: Sie betrachten das Problem von einer anderen Seite und bedienen sich anderer Forschungsmechanismen. Dadurch gewinnt der Leser den Eindruck, dass sie von der Autorin bei der Analyse eher abwechselnd angewandt und nicht miteinander konfrontiert werden. Deswegen wäre es vielleicht begründet, an eine integrative Auffassung beider Modelle hinsichtlich des Nullsubjektes zu denken, statt sie miteinander zu vergleichen.
The article is an analysis of Anna Pilarski’s book called „Das Nullsubjekt im Polnischen. Dependenzielle Verbgrammatik und Generative Transformationsgrammatik im Modellvergleich“ [Null-subject in Polish. A comparison of the models: Dependency Verb Grammar and Transformational Generative Grammar]. The author of the book aims to compare two grammar models present in the contemporary linguistics. Pilarski explicitly emphasises that she neither criticizes nor gives preference to any of them. The constructions analysed in detail in the book are the subjectless constructions with incorporated, context-conditioned, role-prominent, referential and transformation-conditioned realization of the subject. The reader of the book can notice that the two models, DVG and TGG, in principle exist independently and neither of them alone allows for a full description of all the aspects of null-subject in Polish since each of the two examines the null-subject phenomenon in a different way and applies different research mechanisms. Hence, during reading one can have an impression that Pilarski used the two models interchangeably, instead of confronting them with each other. Therefore, it seems reasonable to consider an integrative framework based on the two models with respect to the issue of null-subject instead of comparing DVG und TGG with one another.
Artykuł jest omówieniem książki Anny Pilarski „Das Nullsubjekt im Polnischen. Dependenzielle Verbgrammatik und Generative Transformationsgrammatik im Modellvergleich“ [Podmiot zerowy w języku polskim. Porównanie modeli dependencyjnej gramatyki czasownika i gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej], której Autorka postawiła sobie za zadanie porównanie dwóch modeli gramatyki funkcjonujących we współczesnej lingwistyce, podkreślając przy tym, że żadnego z nich nie poddaje krytyce, ale też żadnego z nich nie faworyzuje. Szczegółowemu badaniu poddane zostały bezpodmiotowe konstrukcje, w których ten rodzaj podmiotu realizowany jest na różne sposoby: może być wbudowany, zależeć od kontekstu, od roli tematycznej, od odniesienia czy też transformacji. W trakcie lektury czytelnik może zauważyć, że zarówno gramatyka transformacyjno-generatywna, jak i dependencyjna gramatyka czasownika egzystują raczej niezależnie od siebie i żadna z nich nie jest w stanie samodzielnie opisać wszystkich aspektów podmiotu zerowego w języku polskim, ponieważ analizuje to zjawisko w inny sposób i posługuje się odmiennymi mechanizmami badawczymi. W związku z tym można odnieść wrażenie, że Autorka książki stosuje oba modele zamiennie, zamiast je ze sobą zestawić. Dlatego też byłoby raczej zasadnym stworzenie w odniesieniu do podmiotu zerowego modelu integrującego, który uwzględniałby zarówno gramatykę transformacyjno-generatywną. jak i dependencyjną gramatykę czasownika, zamiast je ze sobą porównywać.

Aspects of Ferdinand de Saussure’s linguistic theorizing that have exerted a profound influence on the development of modern linguistics include his view on the relation between form and meaning/function. Indeed, the very relation underlies his concept of linguistic sign. The signifying-signified dichotomy appears to be a point of departure for a number of current theoretical paradigms. This paper attempts to point to the fact that de Saussure’s conception of the link between form and function has inspired the treatment of this relation in two modern approaches: generative grammar and construction grammar. It seems that the notion of phase, crucial to the derivational mechanism in the most recent version of Chomsky’s (1995, 2001, 2008) generative grammar, i.e. the Minimalist Program, and the concept of construction in Goldberg’s (1995, 2003, 2006) construction grammar elaborate on de Saussure’s perspective on form and meaning/function. Obviously, both modern approaches go beyond de Saussure’s conception and differ from one another due to distinct theoretical and methodological assumptions.

This paper introduces the notion of new synchronous grammars as systems consisting of two context-free grammars with linked rules instead of linked nonterminals. Further, synchronous versions of regulated grammars, specifically, matrix grammars and scattered context grammars, are discussed. From a theoretical point of view, this paper discusses the power of these synchronous grammars. It demonstrates the following main results. First, if we synchronize context-free grammars by linking rules, the grammar generates the languages defined by matrix grammars. Second, if we synchronize matrix grammars by linking matrices, the generative power remains unchanged. Third, synchronous scattered context grammars generate the class of recursively enumerable languages. From a more practical viewpoint, this paper presents linguistic application prospects. The focus is on natural language translation between Japanese and English.

An adaptive and precise peak wavelength detection algorithm for fibre Bragg grating using generative adversarial network is proposed. The algorithm consists of generative model and discriminative model. The generative model generates a synthetic signal and is sampled for training using a deep neural network. The discriminative model predicts the real fibre Bragg grating signal by the calculation of the loss functions. The maxima of loss function of the discriminative signal and the minima of loss function of the generative signal are matched and the desired peak wavelength of fibre Bragg grating is determined. The proposed algorithm is verified theoretically and experimentally for a single fibre Bragg grating peak. The accuracy has been obtained as ±0.2 pm. The proposed algorithm is adaptive in the sense that any random fibre Bragg grating peak can be identified within a short wavelength range.

Under this scenario, materials that provide such high performance, such as high entropy alloys (HEAs) or polymer derived ceramics (PDCs), have captured the attention of both industry and researchers in recent years. However, the remarkable number of resources required to develop such materials, from its design phase to its synthesis and characterization, means that the discovery of new high-performance materials is moving at a relatively low pace. This fact places emergent strategies based on artificial intelligence (AI) for the design of materials in a good position to be used to accelerate the whole process, providing an impulse in the initial phases of materials design. The enormous number of combinations of elements and the complexity of synthesizability conditions of HEAs and PDCs respectively, paves the way to the deployment of AI techniques such as Generative Models addressed in this work to create synthetic HEAs and PDCs for highly intensive industrial processes. A specific conditional tabular generative adversarial network (CTGAN) was developed to be used on tabular data to generate novel synthetic compounds for each kind of material. The generated synthetic data was based on the conventional parametric design parameters used for HEAs and PDCs, with specific datasets created for them. The real and generated data are compared, calculation of phase diagrams (CALPHAD) simulations are provided to evaluate the performance of the generated samples and a verification of the novel generated compositions is done in open materials databases available in the literature.

Opis:
Face recognition technology has been widely used in all aspects of people's lives. However, the accuracy of face recognition is greatly reduced due to the obscuring of objects, such as masks and sunglasses. Wearing masks in public has been a crucial approach to preventing illness, especially since the Covid-19 outbreak. This poses challenges to applications such as face recognition. Therefore, the removal of masks via image inpainting has become a hot topic in the field of computer vision. Deep learning-based image inpainting techniques have taken observable results, but the restored images still have problems such as blurring and inconsistency. To address such problems, this paper proposes an improved inpainting model based on generative adversarial network: the model adds attention mechanisms to the sampling module based on pix2pix network; the residual module is improved by adding convolutional branches. The improved inpainting model can not only effectively restore faces obscured by face masks, but also realize the inpainting of randomly obscured images of human faces. To further validate the generality of the inpainting model, tests are conducted on the datasets of CelebA, Paris Street and Place2, and the experimental results show that both SSIM and PSNR have improved significantly.

The locative case in Polish is regarded as a structural case. Based on the observations on verb-independent case alternations, the preposition na ‘on’ in Polish is considered as a functional category with regard to the Principles and Parameters Theory the Minimalist Program.
