Opis:
In this paper a scaling approach for the solution of 2D FE models of electric machines is proposed. This allows a geometrical and stator and rotor resistance scaling as well as a rewinding of a squirrel cage induction machine enabling an efficient numerical optimization. The 2D FEM solutions of a reference machine are calculated by a model based hybrid numeric induction machine simulation approach. In contrast to already known scaling procedures for synchronous machines the FEM solutions of the induction machine are scaled in the stator-current-rotor-frequency-plane and then transformed to the torque-speed-map. This gives the possibility to use a new time scaling factor that is necessary to keep a constant field distribution. The scaling procedure is validated by the finite element method and used in a numerical optimization process for the sizing of an electric vehicle traction drive considering the gear ratio. The results show that the scaling procedure is very accurate, computational very efficient and suitable for the use in machine design optimization.

Opis:
The stability of the element of a steel welded girder subjected to bending and shear forces is considered. The considered element is a rectangular plate supported on boundary. The type of a plate boundary conditions depend on the types (thickness) of the stiffeners. Considered plate is loaded by in-plane forces causing bending and shear effects. The Finite Element Method was applied to carry out the analysis. Additionally the Boundary Element Method in terms of boundary-domain integral equation was applied to evaluate the critical shear loading.

Opis:
The article presents issues associated with an analysis of the process of delamination of fibrous composite using the Finite Element Method. Research encompassed three computer modelling sessions for delamination of the material for three different values of distance between the test force application point and the middle of the laminate. The results, encompassing the force value and displacement, were then compared to identify the correlation between these variables and the distance from the force application point. The model correctness was also verified by comparing the value of forces modelled with the real values, obtained during an experiment. On the basis of the results obtained with regard to the size of the force applied, it was concluded that the numerical model represented well the mathematical model presented by Comanho. The negative result errors were due to the increased sensitivity of the software to the laminate fracture phenomenon, occurring during the experiment. Thanks to good representation of the model, it can be used interchangeably with numerical calculations.

Opis:
Nowadays, the finite element method (FEM) – boundary element method (BEM) is used to predict the performance of structural-acoustic problem, i.e. the frequency response analysis, modal analysis. The accuracy of conventional FEM/BEM for structural-acoustic problems strongly depends on the size of the mesh, element quality, etc. As element size gets greater and distortion gets severer, the deviation of high frequency problem is also clear. In order to improve the accuracy of structural-acoustic problem, a smoothed finite-element/boundary-element coupling procedure (SFEM/BEM) is extended to analyze the structural-acoustic problem consisting of a shell structure interacting with the cavity in this paper, in which the SFEM and boundary element method (BEM) models are used to simulate the structure and the fluid, respectively. The governing equations of the structural-acoustic problems are established by coupling the SFEM for the structure and the BEM for the fluid. The solutions of SFEM are often found to be much more accurate than those of the FEM model. Based on its attractive features, it was decided in the present work to extend SFEM further for use in structural-acoustic analysis by coupling it with BEM, the present SFEM/BEM is implemented to predict the vehicle structure-acoustic frequency response analysis, and two numerical experiments results show that the present method can provide more accurate results compared with the standard FEM/BEM using the same mesh. It indicates that the present SFEM/BEM can be widely applied to solving many engineering noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) problems with more accurate solutions.

One of serious drawbacks in the bone endoprosthetics is the implant separation from bone or cement. Stress concentrations on the implant surface are deemed major factor in this process and implant shape optimization seems to be a natural way of improvement of stress disrtibution. An important tool in effective optimization algorithms is design sensitivity analysis (DSA). The discretized formulation of the problem in terms of the finite element method is presented in this paper. A three-dimensional model of femur with a cementless implant analysed. Frictionless contact and perfect bonding are assumed on the smooth and rough parts of the implant surface, respectively. Computational examples show the stress concentrations and their sensitivity to various geometric parameters of the implant.

Alternating Direction Solver
Opis:
This paper deals with the application of an Alternating Direction Solver (ADS) to a non-stationary linear elasticity problem solved with the isogeometric finite element method (IGA-FEM). Employing a tensor product B-spline basis in isogeometric analysis under some restrictions leads to a system of linear equations with a matrix possessing a tensor product structure. The ADI algorithm is a direct method that exploits this Kronecker product structure to solve the system in O (N), where N is the number of degrees of freedom (basis functions). This is asymptotically faster than state-of-the-art, general-purpose, multi-frontal direct solvers when applied to explicit dynamics. In this paper, we also present a complexity analysis of the ADS incorporating dependence on the B-spline basis of order p.

This paper presents a comparative analysis with different models of the flexspline for a harmonic hermetic drive. The flexspline is a thin-walled construction, deforming during work, so its design is a very complicated process. The paper contains a strength analysis for some selected models of this gear. Calculations were performed using the finite element method (FEM) in ADINA. The work presents stress diagrams in longitudinal intersections for susceptible wheels of different shapes for direct comparison. Suggested changes in construction of the flexspline will increase durability of a welded hermetic gear.

This paper deals with the punctureability of a steel plate by a projectile at different angles of attack. The effect of the projectile angle on the force required to penetrate a plate made of A36 steel is presented using Finite Element Method calculation software. Using Abaqus software, a dynamic model of a projectile striking a plate was modelled and the force required to penetrate a 5 mm thick steel plate was presented. The intro-duction gives an overview of the genesis of the topic and a brief historical background. The chapter on numerical analysis presents the numerical model used and how the simulation was modelled. In the conclusions, a summary of the results was formulated and conclusions were drawn regarding the observations and insights of the analysis. The force required to penetrate the plate was observed to increase with increasing projectile angle of attack and it was found that, as the angle of the plate increased, the force required to penetrate increased.

Through the finite element and experimental modal approach free vibration analysis is carried out and natural frequencies are determined. Additionally, vibration accelerations of the structure are obtained by forced vibration analysis of the model. All calculations one performed on the new reconstructed structure, and it is determined whether the reconstructed structure satisfies the vibrational standards.

Opis:
Evaluations of an earth-fill dam throughout its service life must ensure the stability of it against seepage and slope failure. This study presents the seepage and slope stability of the Koga earth-fill dam. The analyses were carried out using a finite element based PLAXIS 2D software, and covers the whole dam body; including 20 m of foundation depth. The behavior of both the body and the foundation of the dam were described using the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Assessments of safety factor and quantity of seepage through the main body of the dam and foundation were carried out at different critical loading conditions. In this study, seepage analysis was undertaken of flow rate, pore water distribution and location of phreatic line. Additional actual field data measurements and observatory investigation were also carried out. From the simulated results, the average flow rate of seepage for the entire length of the body of the dam at normal pool level was equal to 0.06085 m3/s, whereas the figure for that through the foundation of the dam was 0.01937 m3/s. Moreover, total seepage through the main body of the dam at the current reservoir level was 0.04982 m3/s, while the actually measured quantity of seepage accumulated at the downstream toe of the dam was 0.04644 m3/s. The simulated and measured seepage discharges are 93.2 % similar. Based on the result of this study, the resulting factor of safety values during end of construction, steady state condition and rapid drawdown condition were 1.6221, 1.6136 and 1.2199, respectively. Using recommended design standards: United States army corps of engineers (USACE), British dam society (BDS) and Canadian dam association (CDA), the slope stability analysis of the Koga earth dam at all critical loading conditions are safe.
