Opis:
Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) is a visual specification language without well-defined concepts for equivalences. This necessitates the establishment of fundamental notions that underpin the equivalences of BPMN processes. The main body of the paper is centered around the principle of substitutibility in which different types of equivalences of BPMN processes are formally described. Additionally, these results provide a basis for defining the behavioural equivalence of BPMN models. Our research investigation contributes to the field of business process management by developing a tight connection between BPMN and its associated equivalence notions.

Opis:
The article deals with the problem of the pragmatic equivalence between the German particle ja and the Polish particle no; in other words, with the correspondence as well as the divergence of the usage of the particles in the same sentential and situational context. The function and category of these particles as modal particles is considered with reference to the semantic equivalence, comprising the invariant meaning of these particles in their different syntactic functions. The analysis shows that the lack of pragmatic equivalence may result from the difference in the positions of these particles in the sentence and from the function of the position in both languages, which is related to the fact that Polish is a non-positional language in contrast to German.

Opis:
This article attempts to determine the types of interlingual equivalents of Polish and German collocations and denomination units on the basis of previously identified collocational and denominational features of word compounds and to consider the possibility of using the conducted research from the field of collocational and denominational theory in translational practice. Incorrect translation of collocations, resulting largely from the lack of awareness of this phenomenon by translators, reduces the stylistic value of the translated fictional text, and in the case of a professional text, it can even lead to terminological inconsistencies. Regarding denominational units, the translator must be aware of the entire complexity of denomination and specify the denominational motives and the grammatical and onomasological structure of the particular denominational units in order to answer the question by which structures it is possible to express similar motives in the target language.

Optimality Theory
ERC set
tableau equivalence
normal form
equivalence-preserving transformations
Opis:
Many Optimality-Theoretic tableaux contain exactly the same information, and equivalence-preserving operations on them have been an object of study for some two decades. This paper shows that several of the operations proposed in the earlier literature together are actually enough to express any possible equivalence-preserving transformation. Moreover, every equivalence class of comparative tableaux (equivalently, of sets of Elementary Ranking Conditions, or ERC sets) has a unique and computable normal form that can be derived using those elementary operations in polynomial time. Any equivalence-preserving operation on comparative tableaux (ERC sets) is thus computable, and normal form tableaux may therefore represent their equivalence classes without loss of generality. Optimality Theory (OT) is a grammatical formalism based on constraint competition, formulated by Prince and Smolensky (1993) (later published as Prince and Smolensky (2004)). OT is especially popular in phonology, and is used to some extent in other branches of linguistics. In OT, a set of competing output forms {Output1, Output2,…} is generated by machine Gen for the underlying form Input. Each pair N is then evaluated against a set of constraints Con. The grammar of a particular language is modeled as an ordering of the universal set of constraints Con which determines the winning input-output pair for each Input: an input-output pair α = N wins over another pair β = M when α incurs fewer violations than β in the most highly ranked constraint where α and β differ. The input-output pairs that do not lose to any other pair are declared grammatical. The OT formalism expresses two important intuitions regarding how languages might function. First, it easily captures conditions of the form “try A; if impossible, try B; if also impossible, resort to C”, which seem to frequently occur in natural language. Second, OT allows for elegant modeling of cross-linguistic variation and language change in terms of re-ranking of a universal set of constraints. The information that a given dataset contributes constrains the possible rankings of constraints. Such information may be represented in the form of a comparative tableau (Prince 2000) or the corresponding set of Elementary Ranking Conditions, or ERC set (Prince 2002). In this paper, I present an incremental step completing the development of a full theory of equivalence classes of comparative OT tableaux, or, equivalently, ERC sets. Earlier work, especially that of Hayes (1997), Prince (2000), Prince (2002), Brasoveanu and Prince (2011)1, and Prince (2006), has established a number of results concerning how one may transform the information in an OT tableau without loss. What has not yet been done in this line of research is to establish the limits of operations that preserve equivalence. For example, the following natural question has not been answered: given two arbitrary comparative tableaux or ERC sets, can we determine whether they contain identical information?2 The present paper fills this gap: I show that any (finite) comparative tableau may be (computably, and actually quite efficiently) transformed into a normal form, which is unique for the whole equivalence class. Moreover, this transformation is possible by applying a sequence of a set of five elementary operations and their inverses already introduced in the literature. Only two of those are non-trivial, so a very small and simple set turns out to be sufficient to capture all the diversity of possible equivalence-preserving operations on tableaux. Normalization gives us a handle on equivalence classes of tableaux/ERC sets, as we show that each equivalence class contains exactly one normal form tableau. The normal form may therefore serve as the class’s representative. A test for equivalence of arbitrary tableaux (computable for finite tableaux) involves normalizing the input tableaux and comparing the resulting normal form tableaux. The original tableaux are equivalent if and only if their normal forms are identical. Thanks to the normal form theorem proved in the present paper, the space of all possible equivalence-preserving operations may be enumerated, and the same is true of the members of which equivalence class.

Babenyshev and Martins proved that two hidden multi-sorted deductive systems are deductively equivalent if and only if there exists an isomorphism between their corresponding lattices of theories that commutes with substitutions. We show that the π-institutions corresponding to the hidden multi-sorted deductive systems studied by Babenyshev and Martins satisfy the multi-term condition of Gil-F´erez. This provides a proof of the result of Babenyshev and Martins by appealing to the general result of Gil-F´erez pertaining to arbitrary multi-term π-institutions. The approach places hidden multi-sorted deductive systems in a more general framework and bypasses the laborious reuse of well-known proof techniques from traditional abstract algebraic logic by using “off the shelf” tools.

In this article, the author examines the preverb dis- in the French-Polish contrastive perspective. The first part presents theoretical issues concerning the universal theory of semantic prefixation as well as the principles and stages of semantic-traductological analysis of prefixes. The said analysis is based on the assumption that different meanings (i.e. semantic values) of the preverb in the source language should manifest themselves in the prefixed verbs translation into the target language. The second part contains the results of the application of the proposed method in the study of the preverb dis-. By examining the Polish translations of 42 verbs prefixed by dis-, found in two dictionaries, namely Great French-Polish Dictionary and Lexicon 5, the author concludes that the analysed French preverb carries 4 semantic values: the value of moving/moving away (physically or mentally) in different directions, the value of cancellation or reversal of the previous action, the value of negation and the value of interruption/deprivation. Thanks to the applied research method, it becomes also possible to notice differences in the distribution of these values in the deep structures of the French and Polish languages.

The text offers comments on legal translation and its special nature. It is argued that legal translation is much different from other types of specialised translations. Unlike the language of engineering or medicine, legal language does not only refer to the related specialised practice, i.e. the law, but constitutes legal reality, being at the same time an instrument with which legal disputes are resolved. In the context of translation, legal language is particularly challenging as the process of finding equivalence is not restricted to interlinguistic level, but invites both intralinguistic and intersemiotic considerations. Moving not only between different natural languages, but also between different legal cultures, legal translators have to face problems that can often be naturally found in intercultural communication.

Opis:
Proverbs, as peculiar mini-texts, are a subject of interdisciplinary studies. Also for linguists they are a precious field of various types of research and analyses. The article touches upon the problem of the way different proverbs, having the same semantic value, function in the language, eg. the two proverbs Jaki ojciec, taki syn (Like father, like son) and Niedaleko pada jabłko od jabłoni (An apple falls close to the apple tree) have the same meaning ‘children are like their parents’. The described phenomenon is called semantic equivalence, and, as it appears, is not a homogeneous phenomenon in the world of proverbs. There are sets of proverbs that are characterized by a real semantic identity, but one should more often talk about similarity, and not identity within one particular semantic group. This fact is made up by the following factors: the syntactic plane that decides about formal relations between parts of the proverb, and the lexical store that is connected with a particular type of imagery. Both these factors form the final and complete meaning of the given proverb. They may be the source (albeit not in every case) of additional contents of the meaning, which  is why proverbs that carry the same meaning have various functions – those of admonition, warning, reprimand, critique, praise, encouragement or assessment, etc. Hence a definite form of a proverb may determine the way and range in which it may be used and be a factor that limits interchangeability in the group of equivalents. Equivalence of proverbs undoubtedly is a proof of the language’s wealth – it is a phenomenon that makes it possible to choose the most adequate proverb, depending on the intentions of the sender and the function it is supposed to fulfil in a definite communication situation.

A few remarks on the contrastive analysis of styleThe phenomenon of style, analysed from different points of view, has been presented in this article. On the one hand, connections between stylistics and pragmalinguistics with the psychological profile of the sender have been indicated. Janusz Reykowski’s distinction of the five levels of centralisation, included in his publications, has turned out to be most useful in the pragmalinguistic analysis while describing the locutionary act, including the stylistic phenomena. On the other hand, though, a question about thepossibility and limits of the reflection of style in translation has been asked, using the text example in a German-Polish pair, and working out the criteria of evaluation. In the conclusion of the article the author is postulating the formation of a German-Polish contrastive stylistics.
