    Wydana w roku 1877 klasyczna praca Lewisa Henry’ego Morgana Społeczeństwo pierwotne podejmowała problem rekonstrukcji dziejów ludzkości zgodnie z wyznacznikami nauki XVIII i XIX w. Lektura tego tekstu z perspektywy ponad stu lat pozwala na zadanie kilku ważnych pytań dotyczących filozoficznych i metodologicznych uwarunkowań postawionych przez Morgana tez. Jego dzieło, silnie wtopione w kontekst ówczesnego myślenia naukowego, okazało się jedną z najbardziej popularnych prac antropologicznych swojego czasu. Jednocześnie stało się źródłem kulturowych wyobrażeń, które do dzisiejszego dnia matrycują sposoby postrzegania wielokulturowości współczesnego świata przez człowieka Zachodu.
    Released in 1877 classical work by Lewis Henry Morgan Ancient Society took on the problem of reconstructing human history according to the benchmarks of XVIII and XIX century science. Reading of this work from a perspective of over a hundred years allows posing a few important questions, regarding philosophical and methodological determinants of Morgan’s theses. His work, strongly embedded in the context of scientific thought of that time, proved to be one of the most popular anthropological works of its era. At the same time it became a source of cultural ideas, which to this day provide the matrix of perception of contemporary multicultural world by a Western Man.

    The article defines the concept of liberalism, outlines the development of liberal concepts emphasising the most crucial ideas of this philosophical movement and political worldview. It is the 19th century which was declared as a liberal age. Later, in the interwar era, liberal tendencies were dominated by totalitarian doctrines and liberalism went through a crisis which eventually led to a liberal renewal.     The author attempts to reconstruct a short history of modern Polish literary studies not from the perspective of schools or methodological orientations that are usually applied, but from the perspective of what is known in sociology as cultural themes. This point of view offers the opportunity to (re)construct the process of continuity /discontinuity in the whole field of research focused on the problem of reference, which has been recognized as the most important one in Polish studies (as well as in Polish literature, and art) since its beginning in the first decade of the 20th century. In the broader scope the article attempts to rearticulate the definition of the discipline conventionally called “the theory of literature”, and to propose a new way of writing its history.

    Florian Znaniecki – a representative of humanistic sociology – claims in his works that a nation is a product of civilization, a cultural group, organized on the principle of leadership. As a spiritual community it can exist independently of the territory and state organization, it is historically variable, its existence is determined by culture that encompasses the entire work of a nation, all material- technical, intellectual, artistic and aesthetic products as well as a language and other symbols as means of communication, all patterns of behaviour and actions, values and ideals (freedom, justice, honor) and standards arising from them. National culture, customs, religious worship, beliefs and ideals of national historical tradition are shared values and national groups are potentially available to all members of the group. “The principle of separateness” of a nation as a cultural group is shared culture. In democratic conditions of the Third Republic of Poland circumstances for the functioning and development of various types of societies based on the criteria of identity were created. In accordance with F. Znaniecki’s intention, national and ethnic groups can develop national culture or pursue shared cultural ideals. The article is an attempt to answer the question: "To what extent are the ideas of F. Znaniecki’s national society implemented in the Third Republic of Poland?" Referring to the literature, the author presents the ideas of F. Znaniecki’s national society, selected institutions and national organizations operating in the Third Republic of Poland.

Celem artykułu jest, po pierwsze, przedstawienie ideologicznego podłoża kuchni tradycyjnej jako sztuki przekazywania wartości kulturowych, na wybranych przykładach. Po drugie, krótka charakterystyka ideologii współczesnych sieci gastronomicznych nastawionych na konsumpcję masową. Po trzecie, charakterystyka zjawiska tzw. adaptacji kulinarnej.
    The article aims at presenting cuisine as the art of transmission of cultural tradition. To investigate the problem the author starts with description of ideas, beliefs, values and culinary customs as the ground of traditional cuisine. Three chosen examples are discussed: jewish kosher cuisine, japanese washoku and chinese ,,At the round table”. Afterwards the question of the ideology of modern gastronomic chains, focused on mass consumption, are briefly characterized. The fact of culinary adaptation is taken into consideration. Finally, some conclusions as open problems are formulated to further exploration.

    Autorka wykorzystuje w artykule metodę porównawczą w jej wariancie filologicznym by wskazać istotne podobieństwa między myślą Lukrecjusza i Morgana w zakresie ujmowania rozwoju ludzkiej kultury jako całości. Zestawia „katalog wynalazków” oraz opisy zawarte w V księdze De rerum natura… Lukrecjusza z „epokami etnicznymi” wyróżnionymi przez Lewisa Henry’ego Morgana w Społeczeństwie pierwotnym… Oprócz kryteriów ich wyróżnienia oraz celów badawczych wskazanych przez autora Ligi... istotne są również używane przez niego pojęcia powolnego, stopniowego rozwoju (development) oraz postępu. Ważny jest także problem skali umysłu (scale of mind) i rozumu, jako czynników umożliwiających rozwój człowieka i jego kultury. Pod uwagę zostały wzięte zarówno bezpośrednie nawiązania do filozoficznego traktatu, jak i podobieństwa wymagające rekonstrukcji dokonywanej na podstawie drobiazgowej lektury obu dzieł: starożytnego i dziewiętnastowiecznego.
    In this article author uses a comparative method in its philological variant in order to point out significant similarities between the thoughts of Lucretius and Morgan in scope of taking human cultural development as a whole. She juxtaposes “catalog of inventions” and other descriptions included in Lucretius’ book V De rerum natura with “ethical periods” distinguished by Lewis Henry Morgan in Ancient society. Apart from the criterion of their distinction and research objectives, indicated by the author of The League of Iroquois there are important concepts of slow, gradual development and progress, as well as the problem of the scale of mind and reason, as a factor allowing for both human and cultural development. Taken under consideration here, were both direct references to the philosophical treatise as well as similarities, which required reconstruction on basis of meticulous study of both the ancient and nineteenth-century texts.

    The paper summarizes the ethno-linguistic research on the Polish words (understood as the names of Polish values, both positive and negative), and the Polish phrases (idioms and quotations seen as elements of Polish collective memory which are supposed to be explanatory instruments in the process of description of the Polish culture or, for instance, in creation of the self-portrait of a Pole). The main part of the paper is a presentation of the author’s research inspired by Anna Wierzbicka’s theory of the key words to the cultures and discussion on rules and methods of recognizing the key words and arranging them in a culturally motivated hierarchy. The author perceives the key words – in accordance with the principles of the cognitive semantics – as a linguistic expressions which constitute access sites to an entire network of culturally profiled notions. She claims that the important part of the network of Polish notions is, in the term of cognitive semantics, “profiled” and in other words “programmed” by democratic ideas of the old Polish society: the Polish noblemen (szlachta). By means of the analysis of a few texts, the author proves that there is a connection between the notions of democratic rights of liberty (wolność ) and equality (równość ) and terms and notions repeatedly used in Polish self-description: willfulness (swawola), anarchy (anarchia), rebelions (bunty), envy (zazdrość, zawiść ). Another link is found between the democratic institution of Polish sejm/sejmik (parliament) which is well established in culture and in language and characterized by speeches delivered from different points of view, and the notions of Polish quarrels (kłótnie), strifes (swary) and disputes (spory).

    The paper presents an overview of Kraków’s “Życie” (1897–1900) as a journal that featured the most important ideological and philosophical trends of the late nineteenth century. Examination of journalistic texts on cultural, social and political issue, published in the journal especially when Ludwik Szczepanski and Artur Gorski where editors-in-chief, helped to isolate major fields covered in the periodical. These include: (1) bankruptcy of the ideals of the nineteenth century; (2) antinomy of native and universal values as well as values of other cultures; (3) relationship between tradition and modernity; (4) risks associated with the development of mass culture and the dissemination of the philistine worldview; (5) possibilities of overcoming the decadent and artistic worldview. Analysis of journalistic texts devoted to the issues listed above adds to Kraków’s “Życie” being characterised as a journal showing the complexity or even – in a sense – the dialectic nature of Polish modernism.
