    The paper is devoted to a consideration of the distinguishing characteristics of a city as a powerful actor within the international legal framework that has been formed over decades and centuries of world history. The development of cities, their economic growth and hierarchization of social structures has led towards the division of labor, the nature of urban leadership provoking political revolution, and the formation of city states as well as the mutual impact between a state and a city. Thereafter, the problem of their loss of autonomy and independence because of their inability to cope with problems of a transnational nature dominated by threats, and how demographic changes are dealt with are a vital part of this work.

    Artykuł porusza problematykę związaną z ochroną dziedzictwa kulturowego w postępującym procesie silnej rewitalizacji miasta. Rozważania przeprowadzono na przykładzie Matery, włoskiej miejscowości, Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury roku 2019, wpisanej na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO. Fenomen urbanistyczno-architektoniczny Matery stanowi przykład idealnie zachowanej antycznej struktury miasta, zarówno w kontekście wartości architektonicznych i urbanistycznych, jak i kulturowych. W artykule wskazano najistotniejsze czynniki wpływające na obrany kierunek działań rewitalizacyjnych, takie jak: historia miasta, położenie geograficzne wraz z analizą podłoża geologicznego miejscowości, a także relacje społeczne zachodzące między materańczykami i ich stosunek do miejsca, które zamieszkują. W analizie procesu odbudowy zwrócono uwagę na dwa główne nurty wyznaczające jego kształt, tj. zasadę zrównoważonego projektowania oraz silną partycypację lokalnej społeczności.
    This paper discusses the protection of cultural heritage in an ongoing process of a city’s dynamic revitalization. The discussion was based on Matera, an Italian city and the European Capital of Culture 2019, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The architectural and urban phenomenon of Matera is an example of a perfectly preserved ancient urban structure, both in the context of architectural, urban and cultural values. Crucial factors that affected the course of revitalization measures adopted are discussed in the paper, including: the city’s history, geographical location and an analysis of the city’s geological base, as well as the social relationships between Materans and their relation with the place they inhabit. In the analysis of the reconstruction process, particular attention was paid to two main trajectories that defined its shape, namely the principle of sustainable design and a pronounced participation of the local community.

    Opis:
    The article presents the private houses of Ptolemais’ inhabitants in the context of the history and urban development of a city with a thousand-year-long history. Four periods can be distinguished in the history of Ptolemais: the first since the creation of the city’s final spatial development plan in the 2nd century BC until the Jewish Revolt in 115–117 AD; the second in the 2nd–3rd centuries AD under the sign of development and growing aspirations of Ptolemais; the third in the 4th century AD until the first half of the 5th century AD, when the city served as the capital of the province of Libya Superior; and the fourth, from the end of the 5th century AD until the mid-7th century AD, in which Ptolemais, after a short period of crisis related to the nomad invasions, flourished again until the appearance of the Arabs, marking the end of the ancient city, although not the end of settlement in its area. Within this historical framework, changes in the city’s buildings and the transformation of private houses can be identified, and various cultural influences associated with the arrival of new residents at different times with their baggage of experience or with the more or less significant presence of representatives of the civil and military administration of the Roman Empire can be seen.

    Opis:
    Polish excavations at the site of Beit Ras (ancient Capitolias) in the governorate of Irbid, northern Jordan, investigated an area in the northern part of the ancient town, to the west of the Roman-age theater. Three seasons of fieldwork were conducted, starting in 2014 with a survey using the electric resistivity method to detect ancient structures. The presence of architectural features was noted, dated by surface finds spanning a period from the 1st–2nd through the 12th–13th centuries AD. In the next two seasons, in 2015 and 2016, excavation of three archaeological trenches led to the discovery of the remains of a winery and a section of the city wall, as well as a sequence of floors. This established a chronology of usage from the Roman to the early medieval period and proved that this part of the town was mostly domestic in character, at least during the Byzantine and early Islamic periods. Evidence of destruction of a nearby church was also found, tentatively attributed to a Sassanian raid in AD 614 or soon after.

    The article discusses issues related to the evolution and development of the Greek polis. The types of urban planning and architectural-spatial elements of the ancient city are analyzed. As a graphical application are presented some computer reconstructions performed at the Department of History and Theory of Architecture at St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
