Opis:
Amendment of soil with biochar has been shown to enhance fertility and increase crop productivity, but the specific influence of biochar on soil workability remains unclear. Select physico-mechanical and chemical properties of clay loam and sandy loam soils were measured after amendment with wood-derived biochar of two particle size ranges (0.5-425 and 425-850 μm) at five dosages ranging from 0.5 to 10% dry weight. Whereas the clay loam soil workability decreased when the finer wood-derived biochar was applied at rates of 6 or 10%, soil fertility was not enhanced. The sandy loam soil, due to Proctor compaction, significantly decreased in bulk density with 6 and 10% wood-derived biochar amendments indicating higher soil resistance to compaction.

Herein, the photocatalytic degradation of the Congo Red (CR) and Crystal Violet (CV) dyes in an aqueous solution were discussed in the presence of an indium(III) oxide (In2O3) as optical catalyst efficiency. The caproate bidentate indium(III) precursor complex has been synthesized and well interpreted by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-Vis, and thermogravimetric (TGA) with its differential thermogravimetric (DTG) studies. The microanalytical and spectroscopic assignments suggested that the associated of mononuclear complex with 1:3 molar ratio (M3+:ligand). Octahedral structure is speculated for this parent complex of the caproate anion, CH3(CH2)4COO ligand. The In2O3  NPs with nanoscale range within 10–20 nm was synthesized by a simple, low cost and eco-friendly method using indium(III) caproate complex. Indium oxide nanoparticles were formed after calcination of precursor in static air at 600°C for 3 hrs. The structural, grain size, morphological and decolorization efficiency of the synthesized NPs were characterized using the FT-IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. It was worthy mentioned that the prepared In2O3  NPs showed a good photodegradation properties against CR and CV organic dyes during 90 min.

Opis:
The sand termite, Psammotermes hypostoma Desneux is a major pest in the New Valley Governorate, Egypt. Great efforts have been taken to control the pest. We evaluated the toxicity of four selected neonicotinoids [acetamiprid (20% SP), imidacloprid (20% SL), thiamethoxam (18.6% SC), and thiamethoxam (40% WG)], and one organophosphate pesticide [chlorpyrifos (48% EC)] against P. hypostoma workers. The investigation was done under field conditions, using the palm fronds method. However, the reduction percentages in palm fronds was recorded as the height of the sandy clay formed by termite workers on palm frond surfaces, when the fronds had been treated with a different concentration of each pesticide. The results were recorded after 15, 30, 45, and 60 days. Chlorpyrifos (48% EC) was considered the most potent pesticide among all the pesticides tested, but acetamiprid (20% SP) was considered the most toxic among the neonicotinoid pesticides tested. Moreover, the formulation of thiamethoxam (18.6% SC) was more powerful than thaimethoxam (40% WG). Furthermore, the reduction percentages on palm fronds increased significantly with an increase of the exposure period (from 15 to 60 days), as a result of the surface foraging activity of the sand termite workers. These results are given as unique and encouraging trends in controlling sand termites in Egypt.

Opis:
This study was conducted during the two winter seasons (2018/2019&2019/2020) to investigate the effect of NPK and compost fertilizers on the Camelina sativa plant under Egyptian ecology. The fertilizer levels of NPK were 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%, recommended doses, whereas compost was applied at 6, 8 and 10 m3/fed to investigate the effect of these fertilizers and the interaction of both chemical and organic fertilizers on the vegetative growth, oil yield and oil components percentage, especially Linolenic acid (ω-3). The obtained results indicated that the application of 100% NPK as well as 10 m3 of compost produced the highest mean values of all vegetative characteristics compared to unfertilized plants at both samples in the two growing seasons and the other treatments. On the other hand, the results showed that all NPK treatments, i.e. 25, 50, 75, and 100% NPK significantly increased seed yield (g/plant) as compared to control, the mean values were 3.06, 4.70, 9.09 and 10.20 g/plant compared to 1.84 g/plant, respectively, for the 1st season and 3.11, 4.48, 9.27 & 10.27 g/plant comparing to 1.80 of control for the 2nd season. Compost treatments significantly increased the seed yield; the mean values were 5.10, 5.72, 5.88 and 6.42 g/plant in the 1st season and 5.09, 5.73, 5.99 and 6.32 g/plant in the 2nd season for fertilization with 0, 6, 8 and 10 m3/Fed., respectively. The maximum mean values were obtained by compost at 10 m3/fed. The interaction treatment between 100% NPK and 10 m3/fed showed the maximum mean value of seed yield which recorded 10.51 and 10.78 g/plant for the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. In contrast, the lowest values of seed yield were obtained from unfertilized plant which recorded 1.09 and 1.04 g/plant for the 1st and 2nd seasons, respectively. The promising effect of NPK fertilizer on fixed oil % and yield was evident with NPK 100%, 52.53% and 52.83% fixed oil, whereas yield was 408.63 and 413.68 l/fed.), followed by 75% NPK which produced fixed oil percentage and yield 46.82, 46.77% as well as 207.29 and 208.06 l/fed for the first and second season, respectively, compared with other treatments and control. The highest fixed oil percentages and yield (l/fed) were recorded with NPK at 100% and compost at 10 m3/fed during both seasons.

Quinoa plants, originating from the Andean mountains in South America, have a large scale of biological diversity. Along with the cultivation favorableness of quinoa, it reveals superior nutrition aspects. In comparison with cereal crops, like rice, maize, and wheat, quinoa seeds contain valuable quantities of protein of remarkable quality. The current study compared four quinoa cultivars from different origins in terms of protein composition and germinability. In addition, this study focused on the effect of different geographical cultivation areas on the protein composition of wild Egyptian quinoa seeds and three other cultivars that vary in their cultivation origins. Significant differences were observed among the quinoa varieties in the germination percentage (GP), shoot length (SL), and root length (RL). Using the technology of Near-InfraRed Spectroscopy, the highest protein value was recorded for the American variety (18.39%), followed by the Wild Egyptian variety (17.16%). The aromatic phenylalanine recorded the highest concentration of the essential amino acid bulk. The Rainbow variety contained 12.7 g-aa/kg protein, followed by the wild Egyptian variety with 4.9 g-aa/kg protein. In turn, glutamic was the most abundant amino acid of the non-essential amino acids, with 10.1, 4, 23.4, and 4 (g-aa/kg protein) for quinoa varieties, Wild Egyptian, American, Rainbow, Black, respectively. SDS-PAGE was used to identify the allelic variations in the seed storage protein profiles among the studied quinoa varieties. The studied quinoa varieties showed 23.81% of the polymorphism in the protein bands, with the mean band frequency of 0.881. The resulting protein bands fluctuated in the range between 115.02 and 16 kDa. With a similarity percentage (90%), Wild Egyptian and the Rainbow quinoa varieties can be classified in one clade.

Nutritional supplements play a role in promoting human protein synthesis, fitness recovery, and mental health protection. Pollen is considered a natural food with excellent nutritional value. The use of bee-gathered pollen as a nutritional supplement is now widespread around the world, and it is appreciated for its healing qualities. However, depending on the floral species and the region of origin, pollen has a wide range of nutritional value. It was found that clover pollen had the highest protein content (31.4 g/100 g DM), while the lowest content was observed in maize pollen (21.3%). Eucalyptus pollen had the highest lipid amount (9.49 g/100 g DM), while clover pollen had the lowest content (7.46 g/100 g). Phytochemical analysis showed that eucalyptus pollen occupied the highest total antioxidant activity (67.02%), followed by clover (58.25%) then maize (52.18%), whereas clover pollen had the highest phenolic content (1165 mg GAE/100 gm), compared with the other pollen varieties (949.4 to 1073 mg-GAE/100 gm). The contents of branched-chain amino acids were 29, 33.3, and 38.4 mg/g for maize, eucalyptus, and clover respectively, representing 17.87, 18.44, and 16.53% of total amino acids. The contents of total essential amino acids (EAAs) were 61.8, 73.0, and 83.5 mg/g for maize, eucalyptus, and clover pollen, respectively. Only eucalyptus pollen ultimately met the minimum requirements of EAAs for adults. In contrast, the other two types of pollen contained at least 3–4 limiting amounts of the essential amino acids leucine, lysine, phenylalanine, and valine. In conclusion, pollen is a good, affordable source of nutrients that can be utilized as beneficial dietary supplements for human health.

Opis:
Global agriculture is a pivotal activity performed by various communities worldwide to produce essential human food needs. Plant productivity is limited by several factors, such as salinity, water scarcity, and heat stress. Salinity significantly causes short or long-term impacts on the plant photosynthesis mechanisms by reducing the photosynthetic rate of CO2 assimilation and limiting the stomatal conductance. Moreover, disturbing the plant water status imbalance causes plant growth inhibition. Up-regulation of several plant phytohormones occurs in response to increasing soil salt concentration. In addition, there are different physiological and biochemical mechanisms of salt tolerance, including ion transport, uptake, homeostasis, synthesis of antioxidant enzymes, and osmoprotectants. Besides that, microorganisms proved their ability to increase plant tolerance, Bacillus spp. represents the dominant bacteria of the rhizosphere zone, characterised as harmless microbes with extraordinary abilities to synthesise many chemical compounds to support plants in confronting salinity stress. In addition, applying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) is a promising method to decrease salinity-induced plant damage as it could enhance the growth rate relative to water content. In addition, there is a demand to search for new salt-tolerant crops with more yield and adaptation to unfavourable environmental conditions. The negative impact of salinity on plant growth and productivity, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and changes in plant phytohormones biosynthesis, including abscisic acid and salicylic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene, cytokinins, gibberellins, and brassinosteroids was discussed in this review. The mechanisms evolved to adapt and/or survive the plants, including ion homeostasis, antioxidants, and osmoprotectants biosynthesis, and the microbial mitigate salt stress. In addition, there are modern approaches to apply innovative methods to modify plants to tolerate salinity, especially in the essential crops producing probable yield with a notable result for further optimisation and investigations.
