    Opis:
    The article presents a short comparative analysis of two versions of the English ro mance in verse Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – the original text from the 14th century and its modern translation by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Middle English source text uses a North-West English dialect and is an interesting example of a late revival of alliteration originally rooted in the old English tradition. Alliteration as a formal organizing principle is combined with end-rhymes which complete the structure of the poem; this is both sophisticated and rare. Tolkien’s modern rendition of the romance recognizes and respects its dominant structural elements and attempts to recreate all the formal aspects of the text as adequately as possible. The modern version, while being a translation, acquires the semi-authorial signature of Tolk ien, both a translator and scholar who creates a highly competent and historically informed rendition. The translator’s craft is particularly visible when Tolkien’s ver sion is juxtaposed with the Polish translation by Andrzej Wicher. The linguistic and cultural distance between Polish and English is larger than the distance between the original and the modern rendition in English, and, as a result, the translation of Andrzej Wicher manages to reproduce only a limited number of alliterations and hence loses many artistic features that were essential components of the original text.

    The aim of this article is to show the effect that capitalist democracies have on modern medicine and its social perception. Capitalist democracy is a leading concept used here to draw attention to a number of phenomena and problems resulting from the fact that medical activity in a large part of our world is conducted in democratic and capitalist conditions. The author refers to the actor-network theory as a general theoretical background and points out that medicine is not an autonomous sphere in modern societies but a part of an intricate network of connections that determine its shape. The examples discussed in the text include anti-vaccine movements, commercialisation of medical services and the debate on health care in the United States.

    Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej autor tłumaczy, że narrację rozumie przede wszystkim jako narzędzie do porządkowania naszego pojmowania świata. W drugiej części rekonstruuje narrację indywidualistyczną, która upowszechniła się w Polsce wraz z nadejściem systemu kapitalistycznego. W trzeciej części przedstawia możliwą kontrnarrację wobec tej indywidualistycznej wizji. Korzystając z poglądów i ustaleń badaczy krytycznie nastawionych do neoliberalnej wersji kapitalizmu – takich jak Ha-Joon Chang czy Joseph Stiglitz – podaje także merytoryczne argumenty za przyjęciem tej kontrnarracji.
    The article consists of three parts. In the first one, the author explains that he treats the concept of narration primarily as a tool for organizing our understanding of the world. In the second part, he reconstructs the individualist narrative, which became popular in Poland with the advent of the capitalist system. In the third part, he presents a possible counter-narrative to this individualistic vision. Using the views and findings of researchers critical of the neo-liberal version of capitalism – such as Ha-Joon Chang or Joseph Stiglitz – he also presents a substantive argument for accepting this counter-narrative.

    There are many case studies showing the benefits of the conceptual framework of Actor– Network Theory (ANT). It is enough to mention the classic texts by Bruno Latour on the Amazon forest and Michel Callon on scallop fishing. However, there are not many case studies discussing the circulation of knowledge in the humanities with the use of vocabulary taken from ANT. This text tries to partially fill the gap, analyzing a case encompassing the areas of both literary studies and philosophy. The main topic of the paper is the circulation of Jacques Derrida’s views – or the views attributed to Derrida – as exemplified by one of his theses. The purpose of the text is not to reflect on the value of Derrida’s reflections, but only to show how the knowledge of his thought spread from France, through the USA, to Poland, from the 1960s to the beginning of the 21st century. Besides proving that the ANT vocabulary is suitable for studying the phenomenon of the circulation of knowledge in the humanities, the case study also shows that this vocabulary should be enriched. The author of the text proposes the concept of symbolization to better understand how Derrida and the ideas attributed to him have been perceived in various texts.

    The aim of the article is to present how postconstructivism tries to overcome the dualistic distinction between nature and culture (and why this is so important issue). In order to do this, the author of the text compares postconstructivism with cultural constructivism (and its way of dealing with above-mentioned dualism). The former is represented by Bruno Latour, the latter is represented by Richard Rorty. Cultural constructivists want to weaken the nature/culture distinction by persuade us that every object of our knowledge is a cultural object and one should never use nature as an argument. Postconstructivists say that we should stop using both the notion of nature and the notion of culture in our debates.

    The topic of William Davies’s book The Happiness Industry: How the Government and Big Business Sold Us Well-Being is the notion of happiness seen from the philosophical and sociological perspective. The author argues that contemporary western societies have a tendency to individualize happiness and to use psychology and cognitive studies in a simplistic and pseudoscientific manner for business gains. Although there are also some simplifications in Davies’s own approach to those disciplines, he is able to show convincingly how risky it is to overlook the political and communal layer of happiness. At the same time he presents an interesting section of the utilitarian current in philosophy by showing how it anticipated modern discourse on happiness.
    Książka William Daviesa The Happiness Industry. How the Government and Big Business Sold Us Well-Being jest poświęcona zagadnieniu szczęścia w perspektywie filozoficzno-socjologicznej. Autor stara się dowieść, że we współczesnych społeczeństwach zachodnich istnieje niepokojąca tendencja do indywidualizowania kategorii szczęścia, a także do upraszczającego oraz pseudonaukowego posługiwania się zdobyczami psychologii oraz kognitywistki w celach biznesowych. Choć Davies sam nie unika uproszczeń, gdy pisze o wymienionych dyscyplinach, to jednak udaje mu się w przekonujący sposób pokazać ryzyko związane z pomijaniem polityczno-wspólnotowego wymiaru szczęścia. Prezentuje przy tym ciekawy wycinek utylitarystycznego nurtu w filozofii, pokazując jak antycypował on współczesny dyskurs dotyczący omawianej przez niego problematyki.

    The article titled Autor: empiryczny, modelowy czy wirtualny? [“An empirical, model, or virtual author?”] presents a discussion about the terms used in the title which was held by the article’s authors. P. Bohuszewicz defends the validity of the concepts of an empirical and a virtual author, the latter being the result of “rewriting” Umberto Eco’s idea of a model author. T. Szymon Markiewka claims that the concept of a model author and that of a virtual author are unnecessary multiplications of theoretical entities: we only need the concept of an empirical author, but we also need to remember about all the complications related to this concept.
