The monograph entitled ROUND-HEADED BORERS (COLEOPTERA: CERAMBYCIDAE) OF DOOARS, WEST BENGAL – A COMPENDIUM by Sumana Saha and Dinendra Raychaudhuri submitted for review has 141 numbered pages which contain both the body of the text, illustrations and photographs and the list of references, index of names being used in the monograph and information about the authors. The family Cerambycidae is one of the most numerous beetle families in the world. They are usually large or very large insects (this family includes the largest beetles of the world) and often richly coloured, especially tropical species. Because of their size, rich palette of colours and relative ease in their collection, these beetles enjoy a high standing among collectors and entomologists. Although this group is fairly well recognised in the world, a lot of new species of the long-horn beetles is being described every year. This primarily applies to tropical regions. However, when analysing individual countries, the situation with identification of long-horn beetles can be very different. Therefore, each new study, especially concerning tropical regions, is extremely valuable when it comes to species identification of not only long-horn beetles but also most beetle families. The monograph being submitted for review is a compendium o f knowledge about long-horn beetles that are to be found in the Dooars region, West Bengal. The examined area seems to be an extremely interesting object of research as it is situated on the border of two zoogeographic regions, Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. The authors divided the monograph into 14 chapters, presenting successively a general characteristics of the long-horn beetles, the area being examined, the terminology being used in the monograph, a taxonomic part together with the list of long-horn beetle species living within the examined area, and a key to their identification. Additionally, the authors characterised 7 species of long-horn beetles in terms of their bionomics. The final part of the monograph contains a short discussion and the list of references which includes 135 items. Within the area examined, the authors have shown 91 species of long-horn beetles, in relation to140 one being reported from West Bengal. These species have been shown from several nature reserves and Gorumara National Park. Despite using different methods of catching and a long time of in which the research took place, this result is not satisfactory. There is an impression that long-horn beetles were collected “incidentally”, during the study being targeted on other groups of invertebrates. All the protected objects being examined have been well characterised and presented on numerous photographs. An important and extremely useful element of the monograph is the key for species identification. Certainly, this element of the monograph will be used by numerous entomologists dealing with long-horn beetles of the Oriental Region. An interesting fact is a pictogram key for the Cerambycidae subfamilies and tribes being attached, as well as presentation of respective species on photographs together with biological information, habitat and geographical distribution in the world. The monograph being discussed is undoubtedly the needed publication which will facilitate the work of many entomologists specialising in the family Cerambycidae of the Oriental Region. At the same time, it is an invitation to further exploration of the wild parts of India which have been left not so much.

W artykule podjęto próbę usystematyzowania poglądów na temat globalizacji dzięki wprowadzeniu kilku kryteriów porządkujących. Omówiono zatem poziomy globalizacji, takie jak: makroekonomiczny, mezoekonomiczny, mikroekonomiczny oraz gospodarstw domowych. Na tych różnych poziomach na temat globalizacji wypowiadali się przedstawiciele dyscyplin ekonomicznych: makroekonomii, finansów oraz teorii zarządzania, prezentując różne, niekiedy przeciwne, poglądy. Wśród nich opisano poglądy pozytywne, negatywne i umiarkowane na temat związane z globalizacją. Analizowano również wpływ globalizacji na kształtowanie się poglądów o strategii przedsiębiorstw.
The paper attempts to systematise the diverse views on globalisation by introducing several classificatory criteria. The author discusses the levels of globalisation, e.g., macroeconomic, sectoral, microeconomic, and household levels. Presented are views expressed by macroeconomists, finance specialists, and management theorists. They represent different, sometimes contradictory, attitudes to globalisation and its effects: positive, negative or neutral. One of the chapters provides an analysis of the impact of globalisation on strategy theories.

The monograph on mulch and soil spiders (Araneae: Arachnida) which are to be found in the reserves of West Bengal (Jalpaiguri District) submitted for review has 222 pages of text, 2 tables, 494 black and white and 9 colour figures, and 26 colour plates. The whole treatise is supplemented with a list of references which includes 119 items, including the most important ones, such as World Spider Catalogue (2016). The final section contains an alphabetic list of Latin names being used throughout the said monograph. Within the area studied, 89 spider species have been reported that belong to 38 genera and represent 13 families. Apart from endemic species (38 species), the species brought into from other zoogeographic regions, such as Australian, Ethiopian, Nearctic or Neotropical Regions, have been reported. It is a pity that the authors did not attempt to explain the migration routes by which these foreign spiders for the area under study reached it. The treatise contains description of a newly discovered spider species that belongs to the genus Hamataliwa Keyser. Unfortunately, the authors did not fully explain the importance of this new species but only referred to a similar, previously known name. A difference in Latin names, i.e. in one or two “l”, is correct in zoological nomenclature but undoubtedly will create a lot of mistakes, especially as the two names belong to the same genus. Really beautiful and very accurate figures that characterise individual species are extremely valuable for the treatise being discussed. Also colour plates that show individual species as they occur in nature, that is before being placed in a preserving substance, are very useful. The monograph being presented greatly increases our knowledge on mulch and soil spiders of the studied reserves, and the same of the fauna of India, which is still considered one of the least recognised in terms of invertebrates.

W artykule podejmuje się próbę wyjaśnienia głównych przyczyn różnorodności poglądów na temat konkurencyjności, w tym szczególnie pojmowania konkurencyjności narodowej, używanej tu zamiennie z terminem konkurencyjności makroekonomicznej. Wśród tych przyczyn rozważa się: odmienne podejście do tej kwestii ze strony teoretyków ekonomii, jak również zarządzania, różne poziomy agregacji gospodarki (makro, mezo i mikro), na których analizuje się pojęcie konkurencyjności oraz, co najważniejsze, przeciwne teorie źródeł konkurencyjności wyznawane przez autorów opracowań. U podstaw trzech teorii konkurencyjności narodowej bada się kolejno: udział w rynku światowym, koszty i efektywność. Wśród tych teorii za najlepiej spełniającą wymogi dobrej teorii, takie jak: praktyczność, mierzalność i aplikacyjność, autor uznaje teorię efektywnościową, opracowaną przez M. Portera i od ponad dwudziestu lat nieustannie doskonaloną pod względem mierzalności i aplikacyjności.
The author makes an attempt to explain the main reasons for the great variety of theoretical concepts concerning competitiveness, with special focus on national (macroeconomic) competitiveness. Among the reasons considered here are: the different attitudes of macroeconomists and management scholars, the varying levels of economic activity (macro-, mezo- and microeconomic) and, most crucially, the different theories on the drivers of national competitiveness. Three economic categories are taken into account as the foundations for the theories of national competitiveness. These are: leading market position in the world economy, called here the 'shared theory', the 'low cost theory' and the 'productivity theory'. Assuming that a good economic theory should be tradable, measurable and applicable, the author believes that the productivity theory of national competitiveness best fulfils the above criteria. M. Porter and his team at HBS have been developing such a theory for at least twenty years, with special attention to its empirical verification by quantitative estimation and its applicability by economic policy.
