The author focuses on those of Kraszewski’s novels connected with Italy which were written about 1863 when Kraszewski no longer treated Italy as topos. Instead, the country which he had visited many times became a more familiar place sensitizing to reading the signs from the past. From these works there emerges not only a picture of ‘Polish cause’ but more a universal one, related to the changing world in search of a new shape, which the author observed with anxiety. Italy with its ruins telling the story of antique past not only offers a probe into the sense of existence but also helps to grasp the sense and direction of modern transformations. The author portrays this way of looking on Italy, a very specific one yet at the same dependent on the existing literary accounts of the topic, by analyzing the function of the introductory parts of Kraszewski’s works, investigating the language of spatial relations as well as deciphering the metaphorical language (words such as sarcophagus, goblet, conch, shell, pearl, island).

Casket-like structured Pagan Woman by Narcyza Żmichowska is shown as a ‘feargenerating’ composition. The main thesis underlying the article is as follows: in her novel Żmichowska discusses the problem of love and art, but in fact shows the problem of evil and sin. She relies on such lively Gothic motifs as: castle, Satan, picture, look-alike and the icon of fear − the vampire. The motif of fire as an epiphany of fear will be analysed i  detail in the following discussion.

The aim of this paper was to conduct preliminary instrumental tests to determine the possibility of injection applications for thermosensitive chitosan systems, including injection needles and application conditions. Among the many biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of chitosan, the minimally invasive thermosensitive scaffolds that form in vivo are an interesting solution. Despite many studies on colloidal chitosan systems undergoing sol-gel phase transition, almost no studies have examined their injectability. It has been stated that the use of acetic acid as a solvent reduces the forces needed for injection. Moreover, the key impact of injection temperature was determined. Storing the medium at room temperature before the injectability test led to a decrease in the value of forces needed for injection. The obtained results are discussed based on the change of the rheological properties of the chitosan hydrogels.

On the one hand, adoptive family is an alternative for married couples who are not able to have progeny, on the other hand, it is an alternative for social orphans to have proper family. So as well as fulfilling a lot of functions of biological families, adoptive families also compensate for social orphanhood. Only a healthy family can face such a responsible task. According to modern psychology, pedagogics and sociology, family is a small social group, a community which follows certain rules. A healthy family is a functional family, which makes every one of its members happy and gives them possibility to fulfill their needs. There are all sorts of difficulties, failures and arguments in such a family, however, mutual relationships and the potential of its particular members motivates to look for satisfying solutions for every one of them. So, what should characterize a healthy adoptive family, what inner-family factors and outer conditions might disturb its functioning. These questions need to be tried and answered already in the diagnosing and preparation period for the adoptive parents candidates. It is also important to prepare a child (depending on age), because both the child and its future parents bring to the newly created adoptive family their genetic heritage, health condition, previous experiences and life plans, hopes, value, skills, mutual relations, ways to communicate and deal with difficulties and so on. Final court decision on adoption should not be the end, but the beginning of post-adoptive work with the new family, in order to strengthen its proper and healthy functioning.

W pracy przedstawiono badania nad żelami chitozanowymi formującymi się w fizjologicznej temperaturze ciała ludzkiego. Żele wytwarzano w oparciu o chlorek chitozanu i b-glicerofosforan sodu. W strukturę żelu wprowadzono albuminę, którą uwalniano do wody oraz buforu o pH = 10.
Thermosensitive chitosan hydrogels - a subject of this study - might be carriers of new-generation. Investigations of the possible formation of thermogels based on chitosan chloride and sodium b-glyceropho-sphate with controlled release of albumin to water and to buffer at pH = 10 are described in the paper.

In this paper, the mechanical properties of hybrid chitosan hydrogels were investigated using the texture profile analysis test. Scaffolds obtained from a polysaccharide of various molecular weights were studied, which, with the addition of glycerophosphate salt, formed a three-dimensional structure in vivo. The obtained systems were also enriched with collagen and calcium carbonate to improve the mechanical properties. The determined texture parameter values indicate that the mechanical properties of the hybrid hydrogel depend on the molecular weight of the polymer, the type of solvent and, the pH-neutralizing substance, as well as the type and concentration of the filler. Moreover, in some cases the TPA test was the only way to evaluate the mechanical properties of the obtained hydrogels due to the inability to determine the Young's modulus. Consequently, the texture analysis test is a valuable tool for selecting solutions depending on the intended application of the scaffolds.

W pracy przedstawiono możliwości wytwarzania termożeli chitozanowych w oparciu o mleczan i octan chitozanu oraz b-glicerofosforan sodu. Roztwór soli chitozanowej formuje się w postać hydrożelu w temperaturze powyżej .35 st.>°C, a więc w warunkach fizjologicznych (poniżej tej temperatury pozostaje w postaci lepkiego roztworu).
Investigations of possible formation of thcrmogels based on chitosan lactate and chloride with sodium b-glycerophosphate are presented in the paper. Solution of chitosan salt is formed into hydrogel at temperature above 35°C, i.e. in physiological conditions (below this temperature it has a form of viscous solution).

The rivers of Polesia and Volhynia (the Horyn, Styr, Sluch, Pina, Prypiat Rivers and other) are analysed in the present paper as waterways which bring along modernity and carry it further inland on the one hand, and on the other, as guards of patriarchal hierarchies, which according to Orgelbrand’s Encyclopedia, are equivalent to a civilization referred to as moral, affirming simplicity, religion, and selfless relations with others. In the descriptions of places which constitute Kraszewski’s autobiography (travelogues, memoirs, letters, journalistic and fiction works) one may observe a kind of internal tension of the perceiving subject, who continues to value antiquity, but notices with certain nostalgia the anachronism of the world “at the banks of great rivers” and recognises the need for civilizational transformation.

Opis:
Colloidal solutions of chitosan of crab origin with the addition of collagen obtained from cowhide were studied. Were presents the influence of collagen concentration and the method of preparing the sample on the obtained mechanical properties of the solutions and the observed phase transition temperature. Rheological measurements were performed to determine the viscoelastic properties and phase transition temperatures of these solutions. The study was conducted in the temperature range of 5–60°C with the use of classical techniques of rotational rheometry in the cone-plate measurement system. A significant influence of a collagen addition to chitosan chloride solutions on the viscoelastic properties of the systems was observed. The addition of collagen in all the cases increased the sol–gel phase transition temperature in comparison with the chitosan chloride solution containing β-glycerophosphate.

The thermosensitive hydrogels are widely used in tissue engineering due to their non-invasive application. Special interest of researchers, due to the specific characteristics of both materials, is aimed at composites of natural origin obtained from chitosan hydrogels combined with collagen. The mechanical properties of the thermosensitive chitosan-fish collagen hydrogels and the sol-gel phase transition parameters were determined by the rotational rheometry measurement techniques. Based on comparison of the obtained storage modulus G' curves, it was found that the addition of collagen negatively affects the mechanical properties of composite scaffolds. The addition of this protein substance decreases their elasticity. Only the smallest concentration (0.25g collagen/1 g chitosan) of collagen improves the mechanical properties of composite hydrogels, from 56 kPa to 61 kPa. Conducted non-isothermal studies allowed to conclude that the addition of collagen causes an increasing temperature of sol-gel phase transition. However, the observed changes are not a monotone function of the biopolymer concentration.
