Opis:
As all other human activities before the advance of technology and thought, the contemporary journalism is also changing, maintaining, in the meantime, the specificity of its role: to inform, to give everyone the chance to meet people, facts, and ideas, and then make a personal opinion. But the advent of new technologies has paradoxically made it harder to tell the truth because the Internet is almost a lazy journalist who knows the computer just to have the whole world within the reach of a mouse. Having a manifold effect determining the network, it is no longer the man to decide what actually is news, but the response that it has had on the Net, and then in the world therefore is. The lack of filters on the Net means that everything that is available to those who use the Web works as or, just for the sake of knowledge, is assumed as the rank of truth – only to realize, as more frequently happens, that the error is always lurking. The United States, the country that is always in front of others and its technology, for the vast use they make of it, are perhaps the best example to understand how did the journalist profession change, but also have soothing forms of security and protection to the reader. The possibility of having a window permanently open to electronic newspapers that are published in the most remote nooks of the Earth may lead to the temptation of indulging transgressions. But if you rely on the others’ eyes, you fall in the risk of telling people not to trust strangers. But when American reporters are wrong, their own newspapers are the first to denounce them. And this is a sign of how there can not be a great democracy without great press and, therefore, a large press can only be an expression of a great democracy. One matter of great emphasis, in my opinion, is the negative use, often too casual, that makes the web, now that almost everything is allowed, even interpret a fact and not merely tell about it. A couple of years ago, most broadcasting channels around the world showed pictures of a Palestinian and his son trapped in the Gaza Strip, in a shoot-out between Islamic militants and Israeli soldiers. Eventually, as the cameras transmitted, they both died in front of the objectives of photographers. Images, as in fact happened, ’’were’’ interpreted by most of the international press, in the sense that their political values took precedence over reality. That is, the death of the two innocent people ended up in a story bigger than themselves. But the network should be considered a great opportunity, especially when, as has recently happened during the protests in Iran, in the absence of a space for official information the journalists had only one source, the Web. Twitter reported that three people died during the protests. Some sources of information broadcasted that news, some did not. And who broke the news made a choice that is explained in the trial of the first magnitude. That is why we broke the news; in this way the drama of those moments could have best been bespoken. What we come up is whether alternative sources of news, such as bloggers and Twitter, can we rank official. I do have my concerns, others do not, and this debate will obviously continue. When I talk to younger colleagues trying to explain the need to have only one reference point – the truth – I realize I am saying quite a trivial thing. There is a fact, and then there is the news. There is what is happening and what then becomes news. These are two elements that need and should be coincident, but often are not. And here the assessment of fairness and good work of a journalist must be taken into account: had he been able to tell what was real in fact as it actually or commonly happens in such a profession or, had he described it and hence has he bowed to other needs. Anyone, who has endured a past in which the lack of freedom of expression had been almost uncritically accepted, possesses thirst for knowledge, for lore. The journalist is now part of a mechanism, but should not fall into thinking that he is the most important mechanism. He is a piece of the chessboard where the interest is far greater than him and where he must stand above the ability of not falling into temptation; to feel just a part, and not more, who tells the truth. A journalist can create a character, so that he can destroy a person afterwards. But when something is about to be spilled out, he must not master other than himself and his morals. In a perfect world, the journalist should not have friends; he should only think and act upon his own head, he should forget his religion, his political beliefs. Having no masters has always been the dream for most journalists, others’ only reason why they started this profession is having their master. A world without ethics is not a world. A world without honest journalists, capable of telling the truth, even at the cost of their lives, is not a world but the kingdom of darkness, pain, not illuminated by the sun of freedom.

The aim of this paper is to discuss selected rhetorical strategies applied by journalists during television interviews, as well as to consider whether they demonstrate the professional skills of journalists, or if they should be treated as examples of violating journalistic ethics and standards. The following three interviews have been analyzed in this paper: of Tomasz Lis (with Lech Wałęsa), Monika Olejnik (with Jacek Kurski) and Jacek Żakowski (with Leszek Miller). The author presents the rhetorical strategies used by the journalists and concludes that – as strategies involving the prevention of interlocutors from speaking and presenting their views, misinterpretation of information and journalists’ malevolence – they should be considered incompatible with the ethics of journalism.

The findings of this research project on news ombudsmen are mainly based on an overview of the Dutch situation, two surveys (in 2008 and 2011) completed by members of the international Organization of News Ombudsmen, an analysis of more than 400 columns of three Dutch ombudsmen and an analyses of about three hundred comments on the columns. Key questions were: do the ombudsmen and readers’ representatives have an independent position, a statute or a weekly column? What issues are mostly being complained about? What are the main topics of their columns? Do they have the opportunity to adopt an independent and critical stand towards the editorial staff ?

Opis:
The financial crisis as a realization of self-fulfilling prophecy reveals an important ethical dilemma of journalist’s responsibility. The dilemma is expressed in a question, if one should publish the information on crisis, since the publication probably increases the degree of crisis. The difficulty to answer this question points to the shortcomings of the standard conception of moral reasoning and to an approach to the relation between general normative theory and applied ethics. Instead of the standard conception the author proposes a „grammatical” account of general/applied ethics relation, connected with the Wittgenstein’s approach to the question of necessity in mathematics and other non-descriptive disciplines.

The aim of the article is to analyse the practice of EU structural funds projects’ publicity in Lithuania, concentrating on the issue of the so called “paid articles,” used by many of the EU fund- ed projects. It is considered to be a negative practice, since in this case a big part of the information on EU funded projects is presented in a cost ineffective way. It might also reinforce the tendencies in the media to expect companies or public institutions to pay for a publication instead of relying on ethical relationships with public relations sources. The article attempts to show how the publicity measures of EU structural funds projects have adapted to the existing practices and have reinforced them.

Opis:
The article attempts to analyse the legal and ethical limitations of the freedom of speech. (1) The author concentrates on origins of the institution of censorship (ancient Rome, medieval Poland). He points out that in the Kingdom of Poland one could find rescripts, edicts and royal proclamation, which prohibited to import, sell, or read heretical books, under the threats of the confiscation of property, banishment, and even the death penalty. Then the author discusses the issue of censorship in the People’s Republic of Poland (the Law of 31 August 1981). The first part is concluded with the phenomenon of neo-censorship which is a form of self-censorship inside an editorial office toward editorial press materials. (2) The author discusses limitations of the freedom of speech by deontological norms, which are embraced by the IFJ Declaration of Principles on the Conduct of Journalists (FIJ) of 1954, the AJRP Code of Ethics of 1991, EC Resolution 1003 (1993), Media Ethics Charter of 1995, the rules of journalism ethics in Polish Television of 1996, the Journalism Code of Conduct of Polish Media Conference of 2002, the Code of Conduct in the Polish Radio of 2004, the Code of Good Practice for Press Publishers of 2005, and the AJRP Code of Ethics of 2011. (3) At the end the author discusses the ethical code for Internet users (netiquette).

Opis:
Studies on the ideas of the Reverend Józef Tischner seen from the angle of the press, radio and television show clearly that he was a public figure, especially in the 1990s. For many people – including journalists – Tischner appeared to be an authority who could raise different subjects, often controversial, and at the same time engage listeners or the audience with his speech. The significant reason for Tischner’s popularity was also the way he communicated. This article aims at showing the rev. Tischner as a public figure. The article has been based on the doctoral dissertation titled The Reverend Józef Tischner in the Polish mass media (1955–2000). Political and media studies. The dissertation was recognized in 2012 by the „Media Studies” Editorial team during the competition in doctoral dissertation on media studies

Th is study examines the questions of ethics and transparency in Russian journalism. Th e paper explains instances of non-transparent behavior among Russian journalists in light of economic hardship that Russian journalists in the province face in their everyday life. Specifi cally, this study attempts to explicate the connection between transparency, journalism ethics, and economic and social conditions in which regional journalists function in Russia. Th is paper argues that morality may depend on economic conditions of an individual and poor economic conditions tend to diminish human dignity. In turn, diminished human dignity more readily puts in jeopardy professional ethical principles and contributes to non-transparent media practices. Poor economic conditions have implications for regional journalism practice in Russia, where they create a vicious circle which Russian journalists fail to break.

The aim of this article is to clarify two important concepts of ethics with regard to profession of journalist, that is deontology and teleology, and to determinate their mutual possible relationship. Deontological and teleological types of journalism coexist and indicate the importance of philosophical and ethical basis in the work of all those who provide information in mass media. Those two important dimensions of journalism help to answer the question what the work of journalists should look like in terms of mission or profession.

Freedom of the press seems to be an undisputed value. What sometimes raises doubts is the possibility of limiting this freedom. When opposing the thesis about the unlimited freedom of the press, it is necessary to refer to the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg which shows a transition of judicial decisions from an idealistic paradigm to a realistic one. Freedom of the press is a fundamental right, referring to rationality, freedom of expression and freedom of communication. This freedom can be derived from arguments based on the idea of democracy, from the need to serve the truth and the free market of ideas connected with it, and finally from the autonomy of the individual. Freedom of speech has both an individual and a social aspect. It is not, of course, an end in itself. The assumption of deontology must not be ignored.Neither a democratic rule of law nor a society in such a state can function without freedom ofspeech. However, there are serious temptations to curtail such freedom.
