The article is a review of issues connected with business ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the last 20 years. Two decades have passed since the Sixth Polish Philosophical Congress took place in Toruń, where-for the first time in the history of Polish philosophical conventions-business ethics was recognized as a philosophical sub-discipline. It manifested itself in a special subsection of the Congress devoted to the topic, which was also kept at the next congress meetings. The paper is not a full review and most likely is not free from subjectivism. This is partly due to the fact that the subject matter falls within the scope of the philosophy of practicality-as the author interprets and refers to the philosophical system of Tadeusz Kotarbiński.

Opis:
Nicolai Hartmann is a representative of 20th-century German material ethic of values. In this paper I demonstrate the main arguments he gave against egoism and altruism. The arguments presented are as follows: a real egoistic tendency in a person does not result in the moral or axiological order or duty; egoism and altruism are related in a person; egoism and altruism are both one-sided positions. Hartmann affirms that egoism also has specific positive, indirect and direct values.

The problem of a proper relation which should occur between the pope's competencies and the council's belongs to these problems which were most vividly discussed at the turn of the Middle Ages and modern times. The question about the essence and range of the pope's office is one of main motive in the debates which were carried on within the Church then. The paper presents various aspects of the anti-conciliar attitude which grew stronger and the decreasing number of the pro-conciliar from the second half of the 15th century on. The proper ecclesiological conflict at that time did not concern the pope and the council but rather two opposing conceptions of office in the Church. According to the first (papal conception) any office within the Church comes from the pope who, having received it from Christ, hands it down to other hierarchies. In the second conception, however, Christ gave all power to the Church as a whole and then the Church hands it down to the pope. In the late Middle Ages the first conception wins a decisive approval. This leads to the ever stronger emphasizing the monarchic and absolutistic character of the office which belongs to St Peter's followers. The reign of the popes (both in the Church and in the church state) were gaining the character of absolutistic power. With the course of time other interpretation of papal monarchism than absolutistic was thought to be heterodox. There is a profound analogy between Christian Aritotelism and absolutistic interpretation of papal monarchism.

General jurisprudence is a type of thinking about law and the social bond developed by British critical legal scholars. Returning to the classical concerns of (legal) philosophy, it examines the legal aspects of social reproduction both inside and outside state law, treating posited law as a part of wider legality. It brings back to the centre the aesthetic, ethical and material aspects of legality, as well as includes the political economy of law, the legal constructions of subjectivity and the ways in which gender, race or sexuality create forms of identity both disciplining bodies and offering sites of resistance. The British Critical Legal Conference (CLC) is a school of thought committed to a plurality of theoretical approaches to law and to radical politics. The first CLC took place in 1985 and has taken place annually without interruption since. The CLC has introduced a number of themes, approaches and strategies unknown or dismissed by mainstream scholarship, including semiotics, rhetoric, literature, aesthetics and psychoanalysis. A variety of critical schools, such as postmodernism, phenomenology, postcolonialism, critical race, feminism, queer theory, art theory and history, the ethics of otherness, the ontology of plural singularity, the critique of biopolitics and post–politics have been pioneered in the CLC.

W artykule pragnę ukazać losy życiowe prof. Władysława Tatarkiewicza i ich wpływ na jego formację intelektualną, a także dokonywane przez niego wybory moralne, intelektualne. Był on wychowawcą i nauczycielem wielu polskich pokoleń intelektualistów, a jego opracowania z dziedziny etyki, historii filozofii oraz estetyki stanowią wielki skarb intelektualnej kultury polskiej. Do dnia dzisiejszego w kulturze polskiej mało znaną jest sprawa roli jaką w jego formacji intelektualnej odegrała religia katolicka i sama polska kultura narodowa. Droga życia profesora Władysław Tatarkiewicza była złożona, bogata, moralnie piękna, a w swojej treści osadzona w polskości i tradycji narodowej, katolickiej. Zasadniczą rolę w formacji Tatarkiewicza odegrało obok domu rodzinnego, żyjącego kulturą szlachecką, ziemiańską – klasyczne gimnazjum. Ukończył je w Warszawie w wieku lat siedemnastu. Przez zapoznanie się z greką, łaciną oraz literaturą klasyczną rozmiłował się w greckim ideale kalokagatheii. Tam też swoją uwagę zwrócił ku sztuce, architekturze oraz rozważaniom z dziedziny estetyki i filozofii. Jak pisał „Wychowałem się w domu wierzącym. Prawdy wiary były dla mnie w dzieciństwie i później taką samą rzeczywistością jak fakty otaczającego mię świata. Niemało ułatwiły mi życie, choć czasem myślę, że wiara religijna jest rzeczą, którą należy samemu zdobyć, a nie dziedziczyć” (Wspomnienia, s. 120).
This article portrays the life of Professor Władysław Tatarkiewicz and his life’s influence on his intellectual development, as well as his moral and intellectual choices. He was an educator and a teacher of many generations of Polish intellectuals. His works in the field of ethics, history of philosophy and aesthetics are great intellectual treasures of Polish culture. To date, little has been known about the role that the Catholic religion and Polish national culture played in his intellectual development. The life of Professor Tatarkiewicz was complex, varied, morally beautiful and embedded in Polish culture and national Catholic tradition. He came from a family of landowners and graduated from a classic high school in Warsaw at the age of seventeen. When studying Greek and Latin classical literature, he liked the Greek ideal of kalokagathia. He became interested in art, architecture, aesthetics and philosophy. As he wrote, ‘I grew up in a religious family. As a child and later, I treated the truths of faith on equal terms as the facts of the surrounding world. They did not make my life easier, but sometimes I think that religious faith is something we should get by ourselves rather than inherit’ (Wspomnienia, p. 120).

Accountants recently had the opportunity to celebrate 20 years of existence in Poland the regulating of accounting. The act was adopted by parliament in 1994. 500 years before the treaty about double accounting was reprinted by Pacioli. The edition of Tractatus XI. Particularis de computis et scripturis was an (epic) epoch-making event designating the beginning of a new field of economic sciences. The idea of the double accounting was known before, not only because of Pacioli, but also through Cotruglio, who described it 36 years earlier. Recently in accounting, as well as in the broadly understood economy, there is a particular emphasis put on ethics, moral values and professional attitudes. It is worth considering whether and on what scale they were present in the early works of Accountancy 550 years ago, how their representatives approached the subjects the beginning of a written history of accounting. The article presents the main ideas included in the guidelines Pacioli and Cotruglio regarding double accounting, and identifies if ethical guidelines were presents among others guidelines. It turns out that the author of the essential work in the history of accounting, as well as its predecessor, devoted much attention to the moral attitude of the merchant, his appropriate behavior, attitude towards customers and other people, with whom he has a business relationship.

My argument in this paper is that Charles Taylor’s view of liberty and ethics unites Isaiah Berlin’s liberal pluralism with Elizabeth Anscombe’s virtue ethics. Berlin identifies, in “Two Concepts of Liberty,” a tradition of negative liberty advocated by figures like Locke and Mill. He maintains that this concept of liberty is unique to modernity, and it is the form of liberty best suited to the political sphere. The much older concept of positive liberty, which is found in ancient philosophers like Plato and Aristotle, as well as modern thinkers like Hegel, Berlin regards as ill-suited to the political sphere. Anscombe, in “Modern Moral Philosophy,” specifically identifies and criticizes the Anglo-Saxon tradition of moral philosophy. Utilitarian thinkers like Mill are, for Anscombe, consequentialists. The virtue ethics of Aristotle gives a basis for the intrinsic goodness and badness of actions not in sentiment but reason. Charles Taylor draws upon the views of both thinkers. He advocates a liberal pluralism in a manner comparable to Berlin. However, Taylor strongly emphasizes, with Anscombe, that the most complete conception of ethical and political life must be rooted in virtue ethics and positive liberty. Thus, Taylor’s views constitute a synthesis of the approaches of his two mentors.

Accountants in Poland have recently had the opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the Accounting Act. The act was passed by the Polish Parliament in 1994. 500 years earlier, a treaty on double-entry accounting system was published by Pacioli. The publishing of Tractatus XI. Particularis de computis et scripturis was a momentous event marking the beginning of a new field of economics. Double-entry accounting was in use since Cotrugli introduce it some thirty years before Pacioli published his work. Recently, in accounting as well as in economics, emphasis has been put on ethics, moral values, and professional attitudes. It is worth considering whether, or to what extent, these were present in the early works of accountancy from 550 years ago and how accountants approached these matters at the beginning of the written history of accounting. This article presents the main ideas included in the guidelines set by Pacioli and Cotrugli regarding double-entry systems and investigates if ethical guidelines were present there. It turns out that the author of an essential work in the history of accounting, as well as his predecessor, devoted much attention to the moral attitude of the merchant, their appropriate behaviour, their attitude towards customers, and their colleagues and competitors.

The presented study includes an analysis of the category of “good” on the basis of philosophy and economics. Particular attention was paid here to the factors determining the monetary value (price) of an economic good. While achieving the assumed objective of the research, answers to the following questions were sought: What is the difference, therefore, in the interpretation of good as an axiological category and good which economics deals with? What is the basis for the valuation of goods which are the subject of economic analysis? While seeking answers to these questions, an attempt was made to justify the thesis according to which contemporary understanding of the way the market valuates goods is limited to accepting the price understood as a variable representing a kind of relationship set in a given time period.

Ewa Domańska, a distinguished historian of historiography and the methodologist of history, has provided an insightful commentary on the state of humanities and social sciences. The development of interdisciplinary research in social sciences and humanities has resulted in varying outcomes and interpenetrations. Interdisciplinary research helps the development of science. However, studies undertaken with less rigor may pose some threats into the long term. According to Domańska, the lack of qualifications and care (especially with respect to theory and methodology) may undermine the autonomy of a disciplines and the credibility of research in the given field. This timely warning prompted the author to create the project with the aim to assert the independence of the threatened disciplines and to “re-professionalize” these areas of study. This is to be achieved by emphasizing the role of theory in science-a strong embeddedness of a discipline in the theory. Domańska’s concept, in the form of a dichotomous project, seems to be a recipe for achieving this goal. It presupposes, on the one hand, a “practical methodology”, i.e. constructing the theory basing on empirical research material, and on the other hand the so-called “virtue epistemology”, which stresses an ethical aspect of the researcher’s attitude and labour. The aim of the paper is to discuss Domańska’s project and to draw attention to the originality of her concept in the context of economic and social sciences. The economic history is a peculiar discipline founded at the intersection of history and economics. Thus, it is possible to put forward the thesis that Domańska’s suggestions are relevant to the research of economic history. The author will seek to determine what cognitive opportunities arise from the ontology of economic history and their potential threats to the main disciplines of history and economics. The article will also examine if Domańska’s project is appropriate for the economic history research as it is deeply embedded in “practical methodology”, and so in theory. Next, the author aims to consider the role of new theoretical approaches in this field, and whether it is possible to formulate novel concepts within the scope of the economic history. Finally, the author will attempt to assess the significance of “virtue epistemology” or the ethical aspect of an economic historian’s work.

The main subject of the review is Mykola Ilnytskyi’s book Reading and Re-reading…, which is very important research on Ukrainian literature in contemporary humanities. The book includes four chapters in all of which fundamental interests of the researcher are described. Mykola Ilnytskyi reviews the classic texts of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko ( chapter 1 ), and the literature of the first part of the 20th century ( chapter 2 ), as well as contemporary texts ( chapters 3, 4 ). This book is not an extensive view of the history of literature of the 20th century. Its main peculiarity is the delivery of important fragments and episodes of literary history. The essays combine a liberal understanding of the subject and an unobtrusive interpretation of the texts, which reflects the unique ethical culture of the researcher. Mykola Ilnytskyi is clearly aware of the multiplicity of meanings offered byfiction, and therefore does not insist on his own right to the truth, but only offers well-founded and personally verified versions of literary plots.
