Opis:
St John’s Gospel identifies logos, translated as English ‘Word’, as the divine source of the wisdom or truth of the Christian message, if not with the godhead as such. However, given the cultural and intellectual influence of Greek thought on early Christian literature, one need not be surprised that these (and other) theological or metaphysical associations of Word are almost exactly replicated and prefigured in the dialogues of Plato, for whom formation of the divine aspect or element of human soul clearly turned upon access to or participation in the wisdom of logos. This paper explores the moral and spiritual connections between logos or Word, reason and soul in such Platonic dialogues as Gorgias, Republic and Theaetetus as well as the implications of conceiving education as the pursuit of such Word for ultimate human flourishing.

The Power of the Word III International Conference
Word Made Flesh : Flesh Made Word
University of Gdańsk
Opis:
Organised jointly by Heythrop College, University of London; the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London; and the Faculty of Languages of the University of Gdańsk. The third Power of the Word conference, to be held this time in Gdańsk, Poland on 12-14 September 2013, focuses on the themes of revelation, incarnation and human embodiment in relation to poetry. It seeks to take further a dialogue inaugurated by Heythrop College, University of London, in 2011, where the first conference was held, and continued at the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study (also University of London) in 2012, between theologians, philosophers, literary scholars and creative writers. The Power of the Word conferences explore connections and disconnections, continuities and discontinuities between religious experience, religious practice, theological reflection, biblical interpretation, ethics and spirituality on the one hand and poetry on the other. These explorations focus attention both on explicitly religious poetry and on that which is (sometimes emphatically) not. Central questions for this year’s conference might include, for example: is poetry, as Eliot suggested, an instance of the word made flesh? And if it is, how and under what conditions is this so? Is this idea of poetry, if it is true, applicable only to explicitly religious or devotional poetry? In what sense and to what extent might poetry be said to partake, in a Christian perspective, of the mystery of the Incarnation, as poets and theologians have claimed? On the other hand, what of the view that poetry is nothing more (nor less) than an expression in words of our embodied selves and the material world? Are these two perspectives mutually exclusive? The conference, interdisciplinary and ecumenical in scope, encourages theoretical discussion as well as analysis of specific texts and reflection on the work of particular authors, poets and thinkers of different countries, cultures and religious traditions. The beautiful Hanseatic city of Gdańsk provides a fitting setting for such reflection. Its rich cultural history involves diverse religious traditions, well evoked, for example, in Gunter Grass’s The Tin Drum. The home of the Solidarity movement, it has always been a hospitable city that has welcomed visitors and enjoyed cultural variety; while its connections with literature in English go back to Shakespeare’s time, when the city had an Elizabethan theatre stage that was used by English itinerant players. The University of Gdańsk is situated midway between the city centre and the spa town of Sopot, not far from the historic cathedral of Oliwa. Confirmed keynote speakers: Revd Professor David Brown (Institute for Theology, Imagination & the Arts, St Mary's College, University of St Andrews), Professor Michael Edwards (Collège de France), Professor Angela Leighton (Trinity College, Cambridge), Professor Tadeusz Sławek (University of Silesia), Professor Andrzej Wierciński (University of Freiburg). The article investigates the features of modern word derivation. Observations of the author of the processes of word creation, as identified in the texts of newspaper journalism and lively conversation, allow you to talk about the major innovation trends. The tendency to economy language means led to a sharp increase in the composite of the names that reflect almost all spheres of modern life. Among the active compressive methods also include abbreviation and univerbization. Active are different kinds of words derived from proper names. Significantly increased the number of occasional words that demonstrate individual and creative approach to the derivation.

This study aims to evaluate experimentally the word vectors produced by three widely used embedding methods for the word-level semantic text similarity in Turkish. Three benchmark datasets SimTurk, AnlamVer, and RG65_Turkce are used in this study to evaluate the word embedding vectors produced by three different methods namely Word2Vec, Glove, and FastText. As a result of the comparative analysis, Turkish word vectors produced with Glove and FastText gained better correlation in the word level semantic similarity. It is also found that The Turkish word coverage of FastText is ahead of the other two methods because the limited number of Out of Vocabulary (OOV) words have been observed in the experiments conducted for FastText. Another observation is that FastText and Glove vectors showed great success in terms of Spearman correlation value in the SimTurk and AnlamVer datasets both of which are purely prepared and evaluated by local Turkish individuals. This is another indicator showing that these aforementioned datasets are better representing the Turkish language in terms of morphology and inflections.

Serbo-Croat has a complex system of clitics which raise interesting problems for any theory of the interface between syntax and morphology. After summarising the data we review previous analyses (mostly within the generative tradition), all of which are unsatisfactory in various ways. We then explain how Word Grammar handles clitics: as words whose form is an affix rather than the usual ‘word-form’. Like other affixes, clitics need a word to accommodate them, but in the case of clitics this is a special kind of word called a ‘hostword’. We present a detailed analysis of Serbo-Croat clitics within this theory, introducing a new distinction between two cases: where the clitics are attached to the verb or auxiliary, and where they are attached to some dependent of the verb.

Opis:
Empty responses in free word association tests were beyond the scope of research interest in classic experiments. The results of our experiment showed that 6.14% of associations are empty answers. Precise measurement of the time of reaction of each of the participants allowed us to confirm that the empty answer was the result of an intellectual process. An analysis of associations with the stimulus would permit us to segregate those word-stimuli in which the mechanism which generates associations behaves in an atypical manner, thus indicating a difficulty in identifying the meaning of the stimulus, which may then result in a high percentage of empty answers. Yet the significant number of empty responses is not linked with any difficulty in comprehending the stimulus. We may thus conclude that the high number of empty answers in our experiment may depend on the method of conducting the experiment. The participants in the classic experiment were provided with paper forms which contained all of the stimuli in a particular order. Therefore, there was neither a time limit for a single response nor control of the order of stimuli processing. As a consequence, the method allowed backtracking, which means that participants could omit a stimulus without answering and could return to the omitted stimulus later to provide the missing answer. This backtracking possibility may explain the very low number of empty answers in the classic experiment as opposed to our method, which made backtracking impossible.

Opis:
Word-formation models of inhabitant nouns (nomina habitatorum) in contemporary Bulgarian and CzechThe article analyses the word-formation models (WFM) of the nomina habitatorum in Bulgarian and Czech. The term WFM is very similar to, but not conterminous with, the concept of word-formation type (WFT) as defined by Miloš Dokulil. WFT is understood here as superordinate in relation to WFM. WFT is defined by the same set of properties as WFM but differs from the latter according to the character of the formant; while in FM the character is physical (formal, based on sound), in WFT the character of the formant is functional and structural. The formant assigns the derivative to affixation, paradigmatic or composition word-formation pattern. As lexemes naming a person in accordance with a particular place, the nomina habitatorum constitute a subcategory within the word-formation category of nouns of belonging (nomina pertinentia). The word-formation meaning of nomina habitatorum can be represented by the paraphrase “X belongs to Y,” where X is a person and Y – a place in a broad sense. Modele słowotwórcze rzeczowników oznaczających nazwy mieszkańców (nomina habitatorum) we współczesnym języku bułgarskim i czeskimArtykuł analizuje modele słowotwórcze rzeczowników z klasy nomina habitatorum we współczesnym języku bułgarskim i czeskim. Znaczenie słowotwórcze rzeczowników z grupy nomina habitatorum można wyrazić parafrazą „X należy do Y”, gdzie X to osoba, a Y – szeroko pojęte miejsce.

Prefixed Verbs with the Meaning ‘move upwards’ in the Structure of the Verbal Derivational Paradigm in the Ukrainian LanguageThis article presents an analysis of the content and structural-semantic peculiarities of derivative prefixed verbs with the meaning ‘move upwards’. As established, the verbs under consideration are characterised by twelve derivative meanings (‘materialised action’, ‘means of action’, ‘place of action’, ‘doer of action’, ‘peculiar feature of the object of action’, ‘peculiar feature of the subject of action’, ‘the aim implied in the derivative stem’, ‘distributive character of action’, ‘causing transformation of an object into a subject by way of action’, ‘cumulative character of action’, ‘situational character of action’, ‘adverbalisation of action’), which can be separated into four part-of-speech blocks: substantive, adjective, verbal and adverbial. It has also been established that the analysed words first and foremost realise the derivative  potential at the level of substantive word formation; verbal and adjectival derivations can be considered less regular; and adverbial derivatives are the most irregular ones.Czasowniki przedrostkowe o znaczeniu ‘przemieszczać ku górze’ w strukturze paradygmatu słowotwórczego czasowników w języku ukraińskimArtykuł przedstawia analizę treści i osobliwości strukturalno-semantycznych czasowników przedrostkowych o znaczeniu ‘przemieszczać ku górze’. Jak ustalono, wykazują one dwanaście znaczeń pochodnych: ‘dokonana czynność’, ‘środki działania’, ‘miejsce czynności’, ‘wykonawca czynności’, ‘szczególna cecha przedmiotu czynności’, ‘szczególna cecha podmiotu czynności’, ‘cel implikowany w rdzeniu słowotwórczym’, ‘spowodowanie za sprawą czynności przemiany przedmiotu w podmiot’, ‘dystrybutywny charakter czynności’, ‘kumulatywny charakter czynności’, ‘sytuacyjny charakter czynności’, ‘adwerbializacja czynności’. Znaczenia te można podzielić na cztery bloki: rzeczownikowy, przymiotnikowy, czasownikowy i przysłówkowy. Ustalono również, że analizowane słowa realizują potencjał derywacyjny przede wszystkim w zakresie rzeczownikowym; derywaty czasownikowe i przymiotnikowe można uznać za mniej regularne, zaś przysłówkowe – za najbardziej nieregularne.

Words containing the sound imitation element *gra-, extracted from dictionaries of all Slavic languages and dialects are presented. Their word‑forming development is discussed from interjection through verbs calling the making of this interjection or sounds reminiscent of it, to the names of the activist, i.e. the person who makes this interjection. Then the semantic development of the discussed words is presented. The basic meaning is ‘voice of a crow’, from which the utterance of such or similar voice developed, and then the name of the one who uttered that voice. The second basic meaning in this word family is the sound of something heavy falling on a hard surface. In addition to these basic meanings, which result directly from the association with the sound heard as a gra-, there are more than a dozen secondary meanings, developed in different directions from the basic ones. Formally, this family of words is model. In terms of semantic, however, it is very extensive. A comparative method was used.

The article deals with hybrid word-building which is closely connected with lexical borrowings in the vocabulary of the Ukrainian language. The reasons for such new hybrid formations are defined. The main reasons among them are interconnections between the borrowed and own word-building resources, and the growing agglutinative tendencies in modern word-building in Ukrainian, which actually make possible the combination of elements from different languages in the new derivatives. The usage of the borrowed words, stems, and formants in Ukrainian word-building of the 1970s to the first decade of the 21st century is characterized. The peculiarities of the usage of the terms “hybrid”, “hybrid word”, “hybridization” in Ukrainian, Russian and English linguistics are clarified. The tendency for growing hybrid formation in the Ukrainian language is denoted. The types of the new hybrid derivatives are clarified.

Thanks to the participation of a large number of persons via web-based games, a large-sized evolutionary lexical network is available for French. With this resource, we tackled the question of the determination of the word usages of a term, and then we introduced the notion of similarity between these various word usages. So, for a given term, we were able to build its word usage tree: the root groups together all its possible usages and a search in the tree corresponds to a refinement of these word usages. The labelling of the various nodes of the word usage tree of a term is made during a breadth-first search: the root is labelled by the term itself and each node of the tree is labelled by a term stemming from the clique or quasi-clique this node represents. We show on a precise example that it is possible that some nodes of the tree, often leaves, cannot be labelled without ambiguity. This paper ends with an evaluation about word usages detected in our lexical network.

L2 learners may try to pick up the unknown word’s meaning from a dictionary. Many different factors, such as how important the meaning of the word is in the passage, the number of unknown words, and the reason the students are working on it, etc., affect the frequency of the student’s use of the dictionary for help. However, trying to guess the meaning of the unknown word from the context before consulting a dictionary is more beneficial since this may help the learners to pick the correct meaning relevant to the text. Using a dictionary should be limited to those unguessable words whose meanings can hinder the learner’s understanding.
