Opis:: This paper gives a critical overview of various analytical approaches dominating the field of discourse studies in the last three decades, from the perspective of their philosophical and formative bases: social constructionism and linguistics. It explores different conceptions and features of the theoretical nexus between these two bases leading to the emergence of three distinct yet apparently complementary strands of thought (i-iii). The paper starts with the account of (i) Laclau and Mouffe’s classical discourse theory and its idea of ‘discursive struggle’ – a struggle of particular ways of talking of and understanding the world in an attempt to achieve discursive (and social) hegemony. Laclau and Mouffe’s assumption that no discourse is a closed entity but rather transformed through contact with other discourses is then taken as the introductory premise to present a vast, complex and heterogeneous family of (ii) critical discourse studies. Critical discourse studies are characterized in the paper as a hub of text-analytical practices that work on the link between language and social reality from the perspective of power and empowerment, explaining how discourse partakes in the production, change and negotiations of ideologically-charged meanings. Most crucially, they establish a methodological link between social theory and linguistics, providing discourse analysis with text-analytical tools and methods. Finally, the paper discusses (iii) three recent discourse analytical models: Discourse Space Theory, Critical Metaphor Analysis and Legitimization-Proximization Model. Originally located in the cognitive-psychological strand of critical discourse studies, these new models can now be seen as fully-fledged discourse theories with their own apparatus of analysis, involving concepts from cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and social psychology. It is argued that these three new theories make a further (and thus far final) step toward consolidation of the social-theoretical and linguistic bases in contemporary discourse studies. The empirical benefits of this consolidation are discussed in the last part of the paper, which includes a brief case study where the new models are used in the analysis of Polish anti-immigration discourse.

Opis:: At the present stage of the reception of Foucault’s ideas, various theoretical and methodological trends coexist, within which the concepts of Michel Foucault are used fruitfully in empirical research. One of them is discourse studies understood as an inter- and transdisciplinary research area. This article distinguishes and describes three post-Foucauldian strategies of discourse analysis, the combined use of which in one research project is a proposal to integrate concepts scattered in Foucault’s various works. The strategies distinguished (archaeological, alethurgical, and dispositif) are characterized by the different analytical categories, understanding of discourse, and its relations with knowledge and power. The article presents selected results of the complementary use of concepts such as knowledge formation, alethurgy, confession, or the dispositif in the empirical research on the reform of higher education in Poland.

Opis:: Analiza dyskursu oferuje oprzyrządowanie badawcze odnoszące się m.in. do ustalania zawartości przekazów medialnych, reguł debat publicznych, społecznej konstrukcji rzeczywistości, sposobów przedstawiania wydarzeń i problemów społecznych w mediach czy wpływu dyskursu medialnego na opinię publiczną. Artykuł prezentuje, w jaki sposób analiza dyskursu może zostać uzupełniona analizą ramowania (framing analysis). Perspektywa ta, choć stosuje odmienną terminologię oraz alternatywne instrumentarium metodologiczne, bada często te same materiały i pozostaje zainteresowana podobnymi zagadnieniami. W szczególności analiza ramowania jest pomocna w badaniach schematów interpretacyjnych zawartych w przekazach medialnych i w różnych formach działań zbiorowych, np. aktywności tzw. nowych ruchów społecznych. Analiza ramowania zwraca uwagę na praktyki kształtowania dyskursu publicznego i odpowiada na potrzebę badań nad społecznymi procesami przypisywania znaczeń.
Discourse analysis offers research tools to identify the content of media messages, the rules governing public debates, social construction of reality, ways of representing events and social issues in the media, or the impact of media discourse on public opinion. This paper shows how discourse analysis can be supplemented by framing analysis. The latter perspective, although it uses different terminology and alternative methodological instruments, often studies the same materials and focuses on similar issues. In particular, framing analysis is helpful in reconstructing interpretative schemes which are used in media messages as well as in various forms of collective actions (e.g. in the so-called new social movements). Framing analysis pays attention to the practices involved in shaping the public discourse and responds to the need for research into the social processes of meaning ascription

Opis:: Discourse studies háve grown into a vast and mullifaceted domain of academie research. Vacillating belween interdisciplinary and eclectic, discourse studies spin around a certain common denominator which seems to be related to the very essence of discursive phenomena. Saussure, Benveniste, Harris, Humboldt and olhers had pinpointed the opposition of process vs. product, or language as it is vs. language in sociál environment, the latter being considered, e.g. by Halliday as its most natural statě and form ofexistence. Discourse studies in Russia háve evolved from multiple roots: text linguistics, psycholinguistics, stylistics, lexicology, etc. An interdisciplinary and integrational approach admits viewing discourse from both similarly “opposing” sides. Technically it is concatenating words into utterances, utterances into chains, unities, fragments, texts, etc. Functionally and effectively it is leading to new meanings being bom. The ensuing discursive effecl is a result of combining elements into a whole at some point of lime and place, by someone possessing certain sociál and individual characterislics, to achieve certain aims, etc. Discursive practices form a foundation for human praxis in generál. They serve for organizing, categorizing, archiving and interpreting human behavior.The duál nátuře of discourse might suggest a basis for dialogue and reconciliation between systemie and anthropocentrical approaches in linguistics, or even between Sciences and the humanities, in generál.

Opis:: The article deals with the problem of power and knowledge in contemporary discourse studies. The presented reflections are based on theoretical assumptions of the work by two French authors: Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu. These assumptions constitute crucial reference point for contemporary critical discourse analysis (CDA). Different ways of interpreting the workings of power/knowledge in discourse by leading CDA scholars - Teun van Dijk, Ruth Wodak and Norman Fairclough – are analyzed. The aim of the text is not only to present the CDA theoretical background and conceptual scheme but also to demonstrate how discursive violence and hidden power relations can be identified with the help of these theoretical frameworks. The power/knowledge relations in media discourse predominated by symbolic elites, who reproduce discursive order, are given particular attention in the article. Through the presented reflections the author advocates the view that the consolidation of theoretical and methodological assumptions and the negotiation of conceptual framwork are much needed in the field of CDA since it facilitates intersubjective communication in sociology.
Podjęte rozważania koncentrują się wokół problematyki władzy i wiedzy we współczesnych badaniach nad dyskursem. Teoretyczną ramą omawianych kwestii są założenia zapro- ponowane przez Michela Foucault i Pierre’a Bourdieu – stanowiące jeden z istotnych punk- tów odniesienia dla współczesnych reprezentantów krytycznej analizy dyskursu (KAD). Pod rozwagę wzięte zostały sposoby ukazywania relacji władzy–wiedzy w dyskursie u takich przedstawicieli KAD, jak Teun van Dijk, Ruth Wodak oraz Norman Fairclough. Tekst ma na celu nie tylko ukazanie odniesień teoretycznych i wypracowanej siatki pojęciowej KAD, ale też omówienie sposobów aplikacji ram konceptualnych do identyfikacji przemocy dyskursywnej i demaskowania ukrytych stosunków władzy. W szczególności zwrócona została uwaga na relacje władzy–wiedzy w dyskursie medialnym, do którego dostęp posiadają przede wszystkim elity symboliczne, uczestniczące w reprodukowaniu określonego porządku dys- kursywnego. Całości rozważań przyświeca przekonanie o konieczności dokonywania ustaleń teoretyczno-metodologicznych oraz uzgodnień na poziomie „siatki pojęciowej”, co sprzyja intersubiektywnej komunikowalności na gruncie socjologii.

Opis:: The paper constitutes a review of a collection of articles entitled ‘Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies’ published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego in 2016 under the editorship of Bożena Cetnarowska, Marcin Kuczok and Marcin Zabawa. Each section of the review contains a critical evaluation of one paper found in the volume. We conclude that although the volume could benefit from more direct discussion pertaining to the methodology of contrastive studies, each of the articles constitutes a significant contribution to its particular domain and is worth-recommending to the reader who desires to keep track of the developments within different areas of the study of language.

Opis:: This essay uses the expansion of decolonial studies in the so-called Decolonial Turn as a starting point to discuss a few recent significant criticisms against this project – notably those arising from decolonial feminism and counter-colonial thinking. The first criticism of the decolonial option refers to its rapid expansion, with a somewhat mythical portrayal of the Modernity/Coloniality project, thus risking the radical quality of initial ideas. Additionally, there is the pertinent criticism of the treatment initially given to the gender issue, which was not addressed by scholars considered to be precursors of this line of thought. Other powerful matters arose as decolonial thinking spread to different social science fields, including questioning the very possibility of criticism from academic circles. These criticisms generate profound reflections on this movement that intends to bring radical transformations to conservative academic knowledge production. Assuming that coloniality is constitutive of the present, we take these criticisms to look at decoloniality in the field of language studies. On that ground, we maintain that any epistemological breach must start from the contradictions of modernity. We believe that critical discourse studies improve understanding by situating intertextuality and interdiscursivity as inevitable aspects of every discourse, including academic theories and practices.

Opis:: Artykuł jest refleksją nad rozwojem i wyzwaniami rysującymi się przed multidyscyplinarnym środowiskiem badaczy dyskursu publicznego (dyskursów publicznych) w Polsce na przykładzie zainicjowanych w środowisku łódzkim Warsztatów Analizy Dyskursu, które następnie przerodziły się w Konsorcjum Analizy Dyskursu. Impulsem do napisania poniższych uwag była lektura redagowanej monografii zbiorowej Dyskurs elit symbolicznych. Próba diagnozy (Czyżewski i in., red., 2014, Warszawa: Wydawnictwo Akademickie Sedno), która stanowi pierwsze efekty trudnego założenia inter- i transdyscyplinarnej współpracy badaczy nie tylko reprezentujących różne dziedziny nauki, ale też różne podejścia w obrębie analizy dyskursu. Prowadzone rozważania podejmują próbę nie tylko krytycznej lektury tekstów zebranych w tomie, ale też starają się usytuować publikację w międzynarodowej perspektywie badań nad dyskursem.
This article provides reflection on the state-of-the-art and key challenges of qualitative discourse studies as a social science research method in Poland. It focuses on the so-called Workshops in Discourse Analysis [Warsztaty Analizy Dyskursu], a multidisciplinary research collaboration that, initially taking place informally at the University of Lodz, eventually evolved and became institutionalized as a national Consortium for Discourse Studies [Konsorcjum Analizy Dyskursu]. At its core, the article provides a critical review of the volume The Discourse of Symbolic Elites: Towards a Diagnosis (Dyskurs elit symbolicznych. Próba diagnozy [M. Czyżewski, K. Franczak, M. Nowicka, J. Stachowiak, eds., 2014]), which is the first major publication resulting from works of (selected) members of the aforementioned research consortium. As is argued in the article, the focal publication displays the significant amount of challenges faced by the multidisciplinary collaboration within the area of discourse studies. These challenges not only stem from the fact that discourse analysts working in Poland come from different arts & humanities and social science disciplines, but also are rooted in the fact that these researchers draw on various—and often significantly different—traditions in qualitative discourse studies, and often do not engage sufficiently in a constructive dialogue with existent and well-established approaches to discourse research. Hence, the article not only summarizes the key distinctive features of the volume under review, but also attempts to position the state-of-the-art of discourse analysis in Poland within the contemporary international landscape of (critical) discourse studies.

Opis:: Positioning Theory represents a useful approach for studying cultural conceptualizations and patterns of language use. The notion could also be implemented in cross-cultural research, for example in contrastive discourse studies. Nevertheless, cross-cultural studies of positioning are rare. The aim of this paper is to elaborate foundations for further methodological considerations and practical applications of the Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies. It gives theoretical considerations, reflects existing literature where the notion is implemented in discourse studies and presents examples from a pilot study conducted to analyse the cross-cultural potential of positioning. By doing so, it identifies the possibilities and methodological challenges of the notion that arise when it is implemented in contrastive discourse analysis, beyond its initial role in Interaction Analysis. The implementation of Positioning Theory in contrastive discourse studies seems useful to shed light on specific cultural positions as well as formal and functional patterns of discursive positioning practices and resources. A contrastive discourse analysis that aims at cross-culturally comparing positioning activities requires extensive reflections on the analytical and methodological as well as theoretical levels. A requirement for the design of such studies is the use of operationalizable categories as analysed objects. Further challenges emerge regarding implicit positioning and the need to include cultural knowledge.
Die Positionierungsforschung stellt einen nützlichen Ansatz für die Untersuchung kultureller Konzeptualisierungen und Sprachgebrauchsmuster dar, der sich auch für kulturvergleichende Studien anbieten würde. Positionierung kann sich etwa für die kontrastive Analyse von Diskursen nützlich erweisen. Trotzdem erscheinen kontrastive Untersuchungen von Positionierungsaktivitäten selten. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, Grundlagen für weitere Überlegungen und praktische Anwendungen des Positionierungsansatzes in der kontrastiven Diskurslinguistik herauszuarbeiten. Dabei geht es darum, Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen des ursprünglich gesprächs- und interaktionsanalytischen Positionierungsansatzes für seine Anwendung in kontrastiven Diskursanalysen sichtbar zu machen. Zu diesem Zweck werden theoretische Überlegungen und eine Auswertung diskurslinguistischer Arbeiten, die sich der Positionierungstheorie bedienen, vorgenommen. Zugleich werden Beispiele für die kontrastive Anwendung des Ansatzes gegeben, die aus einer Pilotstudie zum kulturvergleichenden Potenzial von Positionierungsforschung kommen. Die Implementierung des Positionierungsansatzes in die kontrastive Diskurslinguistik erscheint nützlich, um spezifische kulturelle Diskurspositionenals auch formale und funktionale Besonderheiten sprachlicher Positionierungspraktiken und -ressourcen zu beleuchten. Eine kontrastive diskurslinguistische Analyse, die auf den Vergleich von Positionierungsaktivitäten abzielt, verlangt einer vertieften Reflexion auf der analytisch-methodischen und auf der erkenntnistheoretischen Ebene. In diesem Zusammenhang ist es eine Anforderung für die Ausgestaltung einer kontrastiven diskurslinguistischen Positionierungsuntersuchung, operationalisierbare Kategorien als den Untersuchungsgegenstand zu bestimmen. Weitere Herausforderungen zeigen sich in Hinsicht auf implizite Positionierungen und die Notwendigkeit, kulturelles Wissen miteinzubeziehen.

Część głosów obu organizacji została zebrana podczas dwóch częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadów przeprowadzonych w ramach mojej pracy doktorskiej. Praca argumentuje, że mężczyźni popierający równouprawnienie płci próbują uczestniczyć w feminizmie z trudnej pozycji „cichych” podmiotów. Mówiąc dokładniej, twierdzę, że podejście „siostrzanego ruchu” w feminizmie prowadzi do nadrzędnych dyskusji na temat równości płci, w których pozycja mężczyzny jest niewypowiedziana. Opierając się na tych przesłankach, staram się przedstawić pewne refleksje na temat tego, co zostało osiągnięte i co być może zagubiło się w tym procesie.
This paper sets off to outline some reflections on the subject position occupied by pro-equality men’s groups within overarching discourses of gender equality. Discussion makes reference to the cases of Men Engage Europe and Maschile Plurale, two loosely organized networks of men that support gender equality in different ways at the EU supranational-level and the Italian national-level respectively. Fragments of the voices of these organizations were gathered during two semi-structured interview conducted in the context of my doctoral fieldwork. This paper argues that men supporting gender equality attempt to participate in feminism from the difficult position of ‘unspoken’ subjects. More specifically, I argue that the tension between narrative of inclusion and narratives of ‘sisterhood’ within feminism produce overarching discourses of gender equality in which men’s subject position is unspoken. Based on these premises, I attempt to offer some reflections on what is gained and what is perhaps lost in the process.

Opis:: This paper gives an overview of the theoretical underpinnings and current work in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). It defines CDA as a transdisciplinary, text-analytical approach to critical social research, aimed at revealing the power imbalance reflected in the use of language and patterns of dominance imposed through the use of language. Describing the most important schools and models in CDA, the paper demonstrates how critical approaches draw on recent developments in different areas of linguistics, such as pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and corpus studies. At the same time, it shows how the interdisciplinary research agenda of CDA attracts the ‘classic’ theories and tools of linguistics to new empirical territories in political/public discourse. The final part of the paper illustrates the explanatory power of the legitimization-proximization model in CDA in a case study of the discourse of the war-on-terror.

Opis:: This paper is concerned with two topics. First, it presents exploratory research on the relationship between public discourse and the world of work. Secondly, it presents a research procedure intended to be a methodological proposal for discourse analysts and sociologists of work. To begin with, the paper outlines the main theoretical problem of the study which is the process of the civilizing of objectification. Next, the purpose and procedure of the research are discussed, as well as the important and controversial issue of using elicited data in discourse analysis. The focal point of the paper is the analysis of conversations between corporate managers. They discuss a short text containing not immediately apparent manifestations of the objectification of human aspects of work. The analysis of their talk makes it possible to reconstruct two ways (two interpretative repertoires) in which participants publically account for their critical attitude towards the text. The conclusions of the research concern the possibilities and limitations of putting these two interpretative repertoires to public use. The paper ends with comments on the prospects for broadening the limits of common-sense criticism of managerial discourse with discourse analytical measures.
Artykuł poświęcony jest dwóm zagadnieniom. Po pierwsze, prezentuje eksploracyjne badania nad związkami między dyskursem publicznym a światem pracy. Po drugie, przedstawia zastosowaną w tych badaniach procedurę, mającą w zamierzeniu stanowić metodologiczną propozycję dla badaczy dyskursu i socjologów pracy. Najpierw przedstawiony zostaje podstawowy problem teoretyczny, którego dotyczyło badanie – zagadnienie cywilizowania uprzedmiotowienia. W dalszej kolejności następuje omówienie celu badań i zastosowanej procedury, a także – równie istotny, co kontrowersyjny – wątek posługiwania się w analizie dyskursu danymi wywołanymi. Centralnym punktem czynionych w artykule uwag jest analiza rozmowy korporacyjnych menedżerów. Uczestnicy rozmowy dyskutują nad tekstem zawierającym nieoczywiste przejawy uprzedmiotowienia ludzkich aspektów pracy. Analiza tej rozmowy pozwala zrekonstruować dwa sposoby (dwa repertuary interpretacyjne), przy użyciu których uczestnicy wzajemnie przekonywali się o swoim krytycznym nastawieniu do tekstu. Wnioski z badań dotyczą przede wszystkim możliwości i ograniczeń owego zmysłu krytycznego uczestników. Artykuł kończy się uwagami o ewentualnych możliwościach poszerzenia granic zdroworozsądkowej krytyki dyskursu zarządczego dzięki środkom analizy dyskursu.

Opis:: Process drama or educational drama, the use of dramatic approaches in literacy class, is not a classroom performance or a skit. It is not a classroom event where students memorize a script and perform a story for other students to watch. For Heathcote and Herbert (1985), Carroll (1986), O’Neill and Lambert (1982), Warner (2013) and Taylor (2006), or Edmiston (2013), it has become the tool to explore social issues, history, or science lessons that have “less emphasis on story and character development and more on problem-solving and living through a particular moment in time” (Wagner, 1999, p.5). Studies on classroom talks during dramatic interactions, unfortunately, are limited. After a systemic online search, three studies are selected for further analysis: Harden (2015), Epstein (2004), and Kao, et al. (2011). These three existing studies explore the discourses in educational drama settings from various contexts, participants, and texts. The three studies are examined for their positions in the extant literature, methodology, and contributions to the field. The examination reveals the predominant perspectives, methodologies, dramatic strategies, and issues frequently discussed within the field.
