Opis:
In the development of ship motion control systems, software simulations or scale model experiments in pools or open water are very often carried out in the verification and testing stages. This paper describes the process of building a software wave simulator based on data gathered on the Silm Lake near Iława, Poland, where scale ship models are used for research and training. The basis of the simulator structure is a set of shaping filters fed with Gaussian white noise. These filters are built in the form of transfer functions generating irregular wave signals for different input wind forces. To enable simulation of a wide range of wind speeds, nonlinear interpolation is used. The lake wave simulation method presented in this paper fills a gap in current research, and enables accurate modelling of characteristic environmental disturbances on a small lake for motion control experiments of scale model ships.

Elastic or acoustic wave-field modeling is an important part of seismic exploration. It can be used during the planning, processing and interpretation stages of seismic investigation. First attempts of using wave-field modeling were undertaken in the seventies by Alford, Kelly and others (Alford R M, Kelly K R and Boore D M 1974 Geophysics 39 (6) 834; Kelly K R, Ward R W, Treitel S and Alford R M 1976 Geophysics 41 2). These attempts were restricted by the limitations of computers at that time. Even now, computation for models of the standard exploration scale could last many hours, and many days in case of longer recording times. One of the best methods to overcome this disadvantage is parallelization of computations (Niccanna C and Bean C J 1997 Computers and Geosciences 23 (7) 771; Villareal A and Scales J A 1997 Computers in Physics 11 (4) 388). This paper presents the results of distributed parallelization of elastic and acoustic wave-field modeling based on a Parallel Virtual Machine.

An underwater explosion is one of the possible threat which can occure during military operations and/or civilian usage. The ballistic protection systems are the method to reduce the impact of the high explosive (HE) charge blast wave. The aim of this paper is to present the influence of the shock wave on the flexible shell. The simulation of the underwater detonation is provided with use of the Finite Element Method (FEM). The influence of the distance between the HE charge and the flexible shell on its deformation was estimated. The results of the conducted analysis including explosion were compared with those obtained for the basic model with no explosion.

Opis:
This paper presents an examination of approximation aspects of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in modeling the water wave phenomenon. Close attention is paid on consistency of the SPH formulation and its relation with a correction technique applied to improve the method accuracy. The considerations are confined to flow fields within finite domains with a free surface and fixed solid boundaries with free slip boundary conditions. In spite of a wide application of the SPH method in fluid mechanics, the appropriate modeling of the boundaries is still not clear. For solid straight line boundaries, a natural way is to use additional (virtual, ghost) particles outside the boundary and take into account mirror reflection of associated field variables. Such a method leads to good results, except for a vicinity of solid horizontal bottoms where, because of the SPH approximations in the description of pressure, a stratification of the fluid material particles may occur. In order to illustrate the last phenomenon, some numerical tests have been made. These numerical experiments show that the solid fluid bottom attracts the material particles and thus, to prevent these particles from penetration into the bottom, a mutual exchange of positions of real and ghost particles has been used in a computation procedure.

Opis:
To design breast ultrasound scanning systems or to test new imaging methods, various computer models are used to simulate the acoustic wave field propagation through a breast. The computer models vary in complexity depending on the applied approximations. The objective of this paper is to investigate how the applied approximations affect the resulting wave field. In particular, we investigate the importance of taking three-dimensional (3-D) spatial variations in the compressibility, volume density of mass, and attenuation into account. In addition, we compare four 3-D solution methods: a full-wave method, a Born approximation method, a parabolic approximation method, and a ray-based method. Results show that, for frequencies below 1 MHz, the amplitude of the fields scattering off the compressibility or density contrasts are at least 24 dB higher than the amplitude of the fields scattering off the attenuation contrasts. The results also show that considering only speed of sound as a contrast is a valid approximation. In addition, it is shown that the pressure field modeled with the full-wave method is more accurate than the fields modeled using the other three methods. Finally, the accuracy of the full-wave method is location independent whereas the accuracy of the other methods strongly depends on the point of observation.

Opis:
A numerical model of propagation of internal gravity waves in a stratified medium is applied to the problem of tsunami wave run-up onto a shore. In the model, the ocean and the atmosphere are considered as a united continuum in which the density varies with height with a saltus at the water-air interface. The problem solution is sought as a generalized (weak) solution; such a mathematical approach automatically ensures correct conditions of matching of the solutions used on a water-air interlayer. The density stratification in the ocean and in the atmosphere is supposed to be described with an exponential function, but in the ocean a scale of the density stratification takes a large value and the density changes slightly. The initial wave running to a shore is taken in the form of a long solitary wave. The wave evolution is simulated with consideration of the time-varying vertical wave structure. Near the shore, the wave breaks down, and intensive turbulent mixing develops in the water thickness. The wave breakdown effect depends on the bottom shape. In the case when the bottom slope is small and the inshore depth grows slowly with the distance from the shore, mixing happens only in the upper stratum of the fluid due to the formation of a quiet region near the bottom. When the bottom slope takes a sufficiently large value, the depth where fluid mixing takes place goes down up to 50 meters. The developed model shows that the depth of the mixing effects strongly depends on the bottom shape, and the model may be useful for investigation of the impact strong gales and hurricanes on the coastline and beaches.

The main aim of this paper is to present the effective example of coupled experimental and numerical tests. Moreover, a development process of a numerical model of a terrain vehicle suspension system is presented. Experimental tests were carried out on the machine Instron 8802 with an assistance of the high-speed camera Phantom v12. Obtained stress-strain curves were applied into the FE model to estimate material constants for Mooney-Rivlin constitutive rubber model and for numerical failure criterion. Geometry of the tire and other suspension elements were achieved using reverse engineering technology. Due to the fact that a tire is such a complex structure to be represented with numerical methods, it was important to develop a discrete model of tire as much similar to the real one as possible. Consequently, an exact tire cords pattern was implemented into the FE model of the tire, which was obtained by the assistance of a microscope and X-ray device. In the next step, numerical analyses were performed simulating the TNT explosion under the suspension system with a simplified motor-car body. Nonlinear dynamic simulations were carried out using the explicit LS-Dyna code, with central difference scheme with modified the time integration of the equation of motion. In order to simulate the blast wave propagation the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method and Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation with Jones Wilkins Lee (JWL) equation defining the explosive material were used. Finally, results from both approaches were compared.

Opis:
Ocean wave energy is known as a renewable energy resource with high power potential and without negative environmental impacts. Wave energy has a direct relationship with the ocean’s meteorological parameters. The aim of the current study is to investigate the dependency between ocean wave energy flux and meteorological parameters by using data mining methods (DMMs). For this purpose, a feed-forward neural network (FFNN), a cascade-forward neural network (CFNN), and gene expression programming (GEP) are implemented as different DMMs. The modeling is based on historical meteorological and wave data taken from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). In all models, wind speed, air temperature, and sea temperature are input parameters. In addition, the output is the wave energy flux which is obtained from the classical wave energy flux equation. It is notable that, initially, outliers in the data sets were removed by the local distribution based outlier detector (LDBOD) method to obtain the best and most accurate results. To evaluate the performance and accuracy of the proposed models, two statistical measures, root mean square error (RMSE) and regression coefficient (R), were used. From the results obtained, it was found that, in general, the FFNN and CFNN models gave a more accurate prediction of wave energy from meteorological parameters in the absence of wave records than the GEP method.

Opis:
The paper describes the SPH modeling of a plane problem of fluid flow around a rigid circular cylinder. In the model considered, the cylinder is placed in a rectangular fluid domain at a certain distance from a horizontal plane boundary, and it is subjected to fluid flow forces. The fluid motion is induced by a piston type generator. The generator - fluid system starts to move from rest at a certain moment of time. The work aims at a discrete description of the fluid flow around the cylinder and, at the same time, calculation of the pressure distribution along the circumference of the cylinder and the resultant of the pressure on the cylinder. In order to solve the initial value problem considered, a new SPH formulation of boundary conditions on the cylinder surface is proposed which match the physical condition for the fluid velocity at this boundary. For a viscous fluid, an approximate description of the stress tensor is formulated which allows to reduce the differentiation of field functions to the first order in calculating the shear forces in the SPH approach.

The paper compares the results of automatic calibration of Clark's synthetic unit hydrographs. Optimal values of model parameters were determined by the objective functions: percentage error in peak flow (PEPF), percentage error in volume (PEV), peak-weighted root mean square error (PWRMSE), sum of absolute residuals (SAB.) and sum of squared residuals (SSR). The last part of the analysis assesses the flexibility of studied model. The research was performed in the upland watershed of Grabinka - left tributary of the Wisłoka river located in Southern Poland. The analysis reveals that the smallest differences between the maximum flow in the observed and calculated flood culmination were obtained when applying PWRMSE function. This paper also indicates, that Clark's model was efficient for describing the analyzed floods.

Block-based physical modeling is a methodology for modeling physical systems with different subsystems. Each subsystem may be modeled according to a different paradigm. Connecting systems of diverse nature in the discrete-time domain requires a unified interconnection strategy. Such a strategy is provided by the well-known wave digital principle, which had been introduced initially for the design of digital filters. It serves as a starting point for the more general idea of blockbased physical modeling, where arbitrary discrete-time state space representations can communicate via wave variables. An example in musical acoustics shows the application of block-based modeling to multidimensional physical systems.
