The paper is dedicated to an aspect of territorial marketing which is called region branding. It focuses on the branding of the lubelskie voivodship. The Lubelskie is clas-sified in the public discourse as one of the „inherently backward” regions in Eastern Poland. As such, it has been subject to discursive stigmatization and institutional dis-crimination. Its case exemplifies processes of orientalism that were triggered in the country after the systemic change and – concerning the regions – reinforced after the institutionalization of new „big” regions in 1999. In the paper, the official strategy of branding Lubelskie is analyzed. The aim is to identify the ways in which the stigma of its „eastern backwardness” is treated in order to produce a new, positive and attractive image of this region to be promoted and sold as its competitive brand.

The aim of the article is the general characterization of cyberterrorism as a new and constantly evolving form of terrorism. The phenomenon was described in the context of globalization processes and the main definitions of terrorism were cited, followed by the specific factors determining cyberterrorism. The article was based on an analysis of source documents – legislation on terrorism prevention and cyberspace protection. Definitions review was performed. The results of earlier research related to the topic of work are quoted. It has been assessed that in the future the threat of cyber-attacks will be a challenge for states and international organizations. The development of modern technologies and the creation of computerized societies is a factor that provides new areas of action for terrorists. Potential targets of attacks are varied and difficult to protect. Preventive actions should be characterized by a comprehensive approach to the problem and systemic, long-term action in the international sphere.

Opis:
This article provides a comparative analysis of gender gaps in observable and reservation wages. The analysis shows that women are able to accept lower wages than men before entering the labour market. Men’s and wom-en’s differences in observable characteristics are not at all sufficient to ex-plain the gaps both in observable and reservation wages. The article thus concludes that the prevalence of gender wage gap may be a result of wom-en’s lower self-valuation and not necessarily labour market discrimination against women.

The paper discusses Karol Potkański’s study of Russia called Constantine and Methodius (1905) with reference to Tadeusz Nalepiński’s work The Spirit King of Russian. He’s coming!,Władysław Jabłonowski’s Around the Sphinx. Studies of life and world of the Russian people (1901),Two cultures. Historical and literary studies (1913), Stanisław Kutrzeba’s Sources and contrasts of Polish and Russian cultures (1916), Marian Zdziechowski’s Selected works,Bogumił Jasinowski’sEastern Christianity and Russia (1933) and others. It attempts to show the religious studies’ current in the Polish research in Russia which was open not as much to the Orthodox Church as to the Rus-sian sectarianism. The author follows ethnogenetic intuitions of Russia historians signalized after the Russian Revolution of 1905 in relation to their inquiries into widely-comprehended Russian spirituality and psychology. He records what was said about the radical dualism of Slavs and their Iranian origin. He shows it is historically justified to use religious studies’ method in Russian studies. He proves the efficiency of dualism as a model for analyzing Russian history. He indicates the key to history through the sectarian beliefs and ideas of Gnostic-Manichaean provenance.

In the opinion, the author stated that the “Göring Decree”, which discriminates against the Polish minority in Germany, has not been in force in the Federal Republic of Germany for a long time due to its incompatibility with the German Constitution. This does not change the fact that there are still unresolved issues related to the rights of the Polish minority, such as its non-recognition in German law, the non-payment of compensation to the descendants of victims of the Third Reich and the lack of compensation for the loss of property of members of the Polish minority during this period.

The Memphite ruin mounds around the mod ern town of Mit Rahina in north ern Egypt form a part of a re gion around which the cap i tal of Egypt mi grated through time. Some of these mi gra tions were the re sponses to land scape changes and the area is one that is sub ject to a num ber of types of land scape change. The delta and river sys tems as well as the deserts that sur round Mem phis changed pro foundly as global tem per a tures rose at the end of the last ice age. This pa - per sum ma rises the main land scape pro cesses that af fected the area and pro poses a model for river mi gra tion and delta-head change in the Memphite floodplain.

Present article demonstrates analysis results of ways of presenting non-equivalent phrases in the „Podręczny idiomatykon polsko-rosyjski, z. 8” by Wojciech Chlebda. The author discusses the po-ssibility of modification and further improvement of some dictionary entries and also the usage of Ø symbol in other dictionaries. The analysis conducted by the author of the present article shows that Ø symbol is used in present dictionary in three cases: literal translation of the original unit with the recom-mended use of such phrases as «какговорятвПольше», «какгласитпольскаяпоговорка», for in-stance, kto “wygląda jak pączek w maśle” Ø [ктовыглядиткакпончиквмасле]; replacing the equiva-lent with some sort of definition, for instance, becikowe pot. Ø [одноразовоепособиедляноворождённого]; transcribing the initial unit and explaining its meaning in post-text comment, for in-stance, “szmalcownik” Ø [шмальцовник]. Result of the analysis allows us to conclude that Ø symbol must be considered as ‘needed’ in translated lexicography. On the other hand, its practical usage in a present dictionary prompts some doubts. Thus, in some cases literal translation can be used as equivalent, for instance, “urlop ojcowski отцовскийотпуск”. Apart from this, it appears to the author of the article that for approximately 10 initial units there are Russian translation equivalents, for instance, “biuro ka-rier“ [na uczelni] ros. “Центрразвитиякарьеры“/ “Центркарьеры“ or “damski bokser“ “кухонныйбоксёр“/ “кухонныйбоец/ кухонныйвоин“.

Retinopatia wcześniaków jest poważnym schorzeniem siatkówki, mogącym doprowadzić do jej odwarstwienia i w konsekwencji do utraty widzenia. W patogenezie tej choroby kluczową rolę odgrywają wytwarzane w nadmiarze naczyniowo- śródbłonkowe czynniki wzrostu (VEGF, vascular endothelial growth factors). Złotym standardem leczenia jest wciąż stosowana od lat 90. XX w. laserowa fotokoagulacja obwodowej nieunaczynionej siatkówki. Wprowadzone w ostatnich latach leki anty-VEGF podawane w postaci iniekcji do ciała szklistego neutralizują wytworzone w nadmiarze czynniki VEGF. Podstawowymi zaletami tych leków są: bardzo szybkie działanie, bardzo krótka i nieskomplikowana procedura podania oraz spodziewane pełne pole widzenia. Leki są jednak wchłaniane do krwiobiegu, co może zaburzać fizjologiczne dojrzewanie narządów wewnętrznych u dziecka urodzonego przedwcześnie. Innym ważnym problemem jest pojawienie się późnych wznów retinopatii, nawet kilka miesięcy po iniekcji. Leki te powinny być stosowane rozważnie, przede wszystkim u pacjentów z retinopatią w I strefie.
Retinopathy of prematurity is a serious disease that can lead to retinal detachment and vision loss. Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) play a key role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The gold standard of treatment used since the 1990s is laser coagulation of non-vascularized retina. Anti-VEGF drugs introduced in recent years administered as intravitreal injections neutralize excess VEGF factors. The main advantage of these drugs is very fast action, very short and uncomplicated administration procedure, full field of view expected. Drugs, however, are absorbed into the bloodstream, which can affect the physiological maturation of internal organs in a child born prematurely. Another important problem is the appearance of late recurrences of retinopathy, even several months after the injection. These drugs should be used prudently, especially in patients with retinopathy in zone I.

In German-language communication studies, the long-running debate about the in- creasingly important practical relevance of the subject is currently being picked up once again. In this article a refl ection on the history of the subject since 1945 will be used to formulate a predic- tion for the possible development of the subject and the practice-related research being undertaken within it. Four basic “currencies” of academic success will be drawn upon to do this: reputation, public attention, funding, and evaluation results. Th ese assist in constructing an alternative chron- ology of the subject, which also demonstrates the social forces which aff ect the “currencies.” Th is leads to the conclusion that the current incentive structures for each individual scientist in com- munication studies could lead to a bisection of the subject. One group will orientate itself increas- ingly on the requirements of modern science-based society and predominantly solve practical problems, while the second group will remain more dedicated to the classic understanding of science.

Th e analysis of election campaigns is a long-standing tradition in communication sci- ence. Since the classic Erie County study (1944) there have been multiple studies on how the mass media cover parliamentary and presidential elections. But the studies primarily focused on elections at the national level and a growing number also at an international level. Th e role of the mass media in regional elections has been analysed considerably less oft en. One fi eld which has been neglected so far is to compare press coverage on the aforementioned three levels of the political system, namely the regional, the national, and the supranational level. Our quantitative content analyses of German newspapers (2009–2011) show if and how much election campaign coverage on these three levels diff ers. Because of these diff erences we propose to distinguish between fi rst-rate coverage (of national elections), second-rate coverage (of regional elections), and third-rate coverage (of European elec- tions). Th e gap between these levels may result in diff erent perceptions of the campaigns by the public.

The paper discusses emotional intelligence as a factor of effective teaching. Emotional intelligence, in broad interpretation, is defined as the ability to differentiate between posi-tive and negative emotions, and the ability to change one’s emotional condition from a poor to a better one. Internal and external components are inherent in the emotional com-ponent, and they can provide stress protecting and adaptive functions of this integral con-cept. Also it highlights psychological characteristics of teachers working with children with developmental disorders. Psychological requirements for specialists who work with indi-viduals with special educational needs include psychological willingness of a personality for this work. This willingness can be considered as an integrated quality of a personality including a system of motivation, knowledge, skills, certain experience, personal qualities that ensure successful activity.

The subject of the considerations are the axiological preferences of Polish youth seen in a comparative context over the last 30 years. The presented content is related to the quantitative researches review.The starting point is the period of systemic transformation, which was accompanied by a deep "cultural rupture" expressed in the conflict of values relating to the sphere of ideology, politics and economy. Young people were often characterized by a feeling of "generational abandonment", insecurity and confusion. On the other hand, the post-transformation time, symbolically initiated by Poland's accession to the European Union, entails a shift towards pragmatic and ethos orientations. Although the prolonged entry into adulthood is accompanied by moratoria, post-transformation means significant identity and social changes, which largely corresponds to the development of human capital, manifested on the level of skills, intuition and creative potential. However, it should be remembered that predicting future changes in the values of Polish society, especially young people, carries a considerable risk of unverifiability.

A near-mil len nial tree-ring chro nol ogy (AD 1147–2000) is pre sented for south-west Fin land and an a lyzed us ing dendroclimatic meth ods. This is a com pos ite chro nol ogy com pris ing sam ples both from stand ing pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) and subfossil trunks as re cov ered from the lake sed i ments, with a to tal sam ple size of 189 tree-ring sample se ries. The se ries were dendrochronologically cross-dated to ex act cal en dar years to por tray vari abil ity in tree-ring widths on inter-an nual and lon ger scales. Al though the stud ied chro nol ogy cor re lates sta tis ti cally sig nif i cantly with other long tree-ring width chro nol o gies from Fin land over their com mon pe riod (AD 1520–1993), the south-west chro nol ogy did not ex hibit sim i larly strong mid-sum mer tem per a ture or spring/early-sum mer pre cip i ta tion sig nals in com par i son to pub lished chro nol o gies. On the other hand, the south-west chro nol ogy showed high est cor re la tions to the North At lan tic Os cil la tion in di ces in win ter/spring months, this as so ci a tion fol low ing a dendroclimatic fea ture com mon to pine chro nol o gies over the re gion and ad ja cent ar eas. Paleoclimatic com par i son showed that tree-rings had var ied sim i larly to cen tral Eu ro pean spring tem per a tures. It is pos tu lated that the col lected and dated tree-ring ma te rial could be stud ied for wood sur face reflectance (blue chan nel light in ten sity) and sta ble iso topes, which both have re - cently shown to cor re late notably well with sum mer tem per a tures.
