The authors of this article discuss how the works of Hermann Stehr (1864–1940), a German writer from Silesia, were received. An author, who – like Gerhart Hauptmann – stayed in Germany after the national socialists took over. That fact affected the reception of his writing: to this day, he is considered as a representative of the so-colled ‘literature of blood and land’, which the Nazis perceived as expression of „German spirit”. This article presents Stehr’s literary works from various perspectives. It shows the tragedy of the author making political choices in times, when an individual, even the most prominent, was subjected to totalitarian processes of unification and de-individualization.

The aim of the article is to present the position of Brazilian poetry in the Polish literary system using the examples of translations of poems by Carlos Drummond de Andrade. A library query has proved him to be the Brazilian poet whose works are most frequently translated into Polish. However, he remains little known in Poland, which results from both: lack of the representative publications in the mainstream and the quality of translations.

The author of the article – Yi Lijun, a distinguished translator of Polish literary works into Chinese – attempts to present the reception of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s works in China, con-centrating on the issues concerning translations. She presents vignettes of the greatest scholars’ discussing Sienkiewicz’s works, the history of reception of Sienkiewicz’s writings, as well as the methods of popularizing his novels. She concentrates on problematics concerning the process of translating Trylogy from Polish language into Chinese, pointing out the difficulties and mistakes made by translators. She discusses her own work on translating the novels of the author of Quo vadis.

Równoczesnym efektem masowej poczytności książek Stephenie Meyer była zmiana statusu literatury kierowanej do młodych czytelniczek, która z oferty marginalnej stała się jednym z najbardziej obecnie rozwijanych segmentów rynku wydawniczego.
In her article, Monika Gnieciak analyses the impact of the publication of the Twilight saga on the functioning of contemporary literary life. The controversial popularity of the saga, both among its fans and anti-fans, combined with the development of social networking sites at the time of its publication, resulted in a cultural change which caused the mechanisms of literary communication to undergo a permanent transformation. At the same time, the mass readership of Stephenie Meyer’s fiction brought about a change in the status of the young adult genre, which from a marginal literary product has developed into one of the most vibrant segments of the current publishing market.

The article presents the views of Stanislaw Szczepanowski (1845-1900) – a politician, an economist and a publicist – on the Polish XIXth century literature. Szczepanowski was an opponent of aestheticism and of cosmopolitan art. He treated literature instrumentally, seeing in it primarily a tool serving the realization of national goals. He especially valued Romantic Literature, for – in his belief – it guaranteed the continuity of culture and propounded the national ideal which integrated and activated the Polish nation. The foundation of this ideal is implementation of Christian ethical values into the political, social and economic life.

This article investigates the Spanish translation of Miron Białoszewski's Memoir from the Warsaw Uprising. I discuss the erroneous translation of the work as a “diary” according to Spanish dictionaries and literary theory works, the paratexts (introduction and afterword), and the reception of the work by the Spanish speaking community. In the last part, I examine a few passages to demonstrate how Białoszewski’s style has come to be flattened in the translation process.

In 1930 Sibilla Aleramo translated the play Dom kobiet by Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska into Italian. This three-act drama, probably the first play with only female characters in the history of theatre, was set in Warsaw the same year and was suddenly a huge success in Poland. Aleramo’s translation has remained unpublished and has been preserved (as a manuscript and a typescript draft) in the author’s archive belonging to the Fondazione Istituto Gramsci in Rome. The paper focuses on the history of this text, based mainly on the analysis of Nałkowska’s diary and unpublished letters and documents from Aleramo’s archive.

The article raises the topic of the evolving image of Venice from the perspectives of three travel accounts: by Vittorio Alfieri, Fryderyk August Moszyński, and Stanisław Dunin-Borkowski. They were all bound by the figure of the Italian playwright Alfieri. In the article, I propose a new look into the accounts from the travels of Polish intellectual elite: an enlightened journey described in the recollections by Moszyński, and a 19th-century journey depicted in the journals by Borkowski, following Alfieri as the guide. Considering his tragedies in support of national liberation, he perfectly matched the ideas in the minds of Polish artists at the turn of the 19th century. Even though the author may be forgotten today, the reception of his works, depending on the historical period, political situation, and literary streams, evolved interchangeably placing him in the spotlight and ignoring him. In the first half of the 19th century, he was a significant figure, a fact which triggers interesting observations, particularly in the context of the journeys of artists to Venice.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie oraz omówienie wyników eksperymentu związanego z percepcją emocjonalną poezji. W badaniu podjęto próbę weryfikacji hipotezy, według której pojawienie się znanego nazwiska kojarzonego jako wielki poetycki talent wpłynie na silniejsze deklaratywne natężenie przeżywanych emocji. Przebadano 110 osób (52 mężczyzn; 58 kobiet) podzielonych na cztery losowo dobrane grupy. Arkusze poszczególnych grup różniły się między sobą nazwiskiem rzekomego autora lub jego brakiem (grupa kontrolna). Wyniki udowodniły, że autorytet wpływa nie tylko na siłę deklarowanych emocji, ale też istotnie determinuje rodzaj przeżywanej emocji. Doprowadza to do wniosku, iż utworowi poetyckiemu częściej przypisujemy cechy i emocje kojarzone z jego autorem niż z samą treścią utworu.
The purpose of this article is a presentation and discussion of the results of an experiment connected with the emotional perception of poetry. This research sought to verify the hypothesis which states that revealing a famous name, associated with huge poetic talent, influences the intensity of emotions experienced. 110 people were tested (52 men, 58 women) in four randomly selected groups. Each group had a sheet of paper with the same text but with different authors' names or without any name (control group). The poem was written specially for this experiment. The next step was to measure of type and stremgth of emotions experienced on a scale of 1 to 7. The results proved that author's status not only influences the strength of emotion, but also determines the type of emotion. This suggests that more often we attribute the character and emotion of a poetic work to the author, rather than the content of the work.

The article chronologically reconstructs the process of reception of Olga Tokarczuk’s prose in China with particular focus on the period after she received the Nobel Prize for Literature.
