The paper formulates several critical observations about the official (established by Polish legal statutes) rules of evaluation scientific publications. These rules are based on so-called parameterization, that is, ascription of points to papers and books published by scientists. The criticism is made from the point of view of the humanities and social sciences, although some assertions have a more general character. Although the author shares the opinion that evaluation of science is necessary, he points out several disadvantages of parameterization. One of them consists in the fact that the ascription of points to publications uses a relatively weak scale, that is, based on the ordering relation. This feature essentially limits the range of mathematical operations admissible to results of measuring in such a way. This situation results in conventional character of parameterization, contrary to expectations that it successfully display the real value of scientific achievements. The paper illustrates this problem by concrete examples as well as shows that parameterization makes possible pathological cases stemming from political and world-view preferences.

The author analyses publisher’s notes, regarded here as primarily written texts (substantial aspect), localized on the fourth page of the book cover, on the back cover and/or on the flaps of the dust jacket (spatial aspect), which perform the presentational and recommendational functions. The material is subject to genelogical analysis according to the following order: canonical, alternate and adap- tive patterns. The canonical pattern is the presentation of the main text and its positive valorization. The strategies used in an alternate pattern were revealed as a result of the research. These include: authorial presentations, presentation and valorization through a biogram or reviews, direct addresses to recipient in order to personalize her/him or to unify the community, and provocations inclu- sing taboo violation. The adaptive pattern consists of antipresentations, anti- recommendations and the interiorization of other species.

Textbook sets should be designed according to the constructivist theory of learning and teaching on which the curriculum for the environmental studies subject in the Republic of Slovenia was built. With the empirical research we wanted to establish how teachers evaluate the representation of some constructivist elements in the selected textbook sets for the environmental studies subject. We collected the data on a non-accidental pattern of teachers (n=63) that were teaching the third grade in the primary school. With our research we established that in the teachers’ opinion there are differences among the textbook sets regarding the consideration of the selected constructivist elements: stimulation of pupils’ independence, guidance into more active forms and methods of work, and mainly representation of the activity of pupils, which should develop their skills and abilities.

W artykule przedstawiono zarys stanu badań recepcji wydawniczej i czytelniczej twórczości Frances Hodgson Burnett w Polsce. Zwrócono uwagę na mało znane utwory pisarki. Na przykładzie analizy wyników ankietowych badań własnych przeprowadzonych wśród gimnazjalistów i licealistów wzorcowego zespołu szkół ogólnokształcących w Gliwicach pokazano współczesne zainteresowanie tekstami F.H. Burnett. Całości dopełniła ogólna analiza literacka dzieł oraz wskazanie ich walorów biblioterapeutycznych.
The article outlines the state of research on the publishers’ and readers’ reception of Frances Hodgdon Burnett in Poland. Attention is drawn to her less known novels. Based on the results of the author of the article’s own survey conducted among middle school and secondary school students of a model General Education School Complex in Gliwice, it is shown that these texts remain of interest to a contemporary student. A literary analysis of these works complements the article and points to their biblio-therapeutic values.

Obserwowany od wielu lat nacisk na młodych naukowców, usankcjonowany przepisami prawnymi, nakłada na nich obowiązek nie tylko prowadzenia badań i działalności dydaktycznej, ale także spełnienia wymogów parametryzacyjnych. To właśnie od ilości publikacji, czasami bez względu na ich jakość, zależy ich pozycja na uczelni, a więc postęp kariery naukowej i dostęp do finansowania badań (np. uzyskania stypendium czy grantów). Nie dziwi zatem, że coraz częściej dochodzi do przypadków korzystania z kontrowersyjnych ofert tzw. drapieżnych wydawców czy organizatorów konferencji. Pozostający pod pręgierzem parametryzacyjnych wymagań naukowcy czasami nieświadomie korzystają z usług takich firm. W artykule opisano znane w świecie naukowym przypadki nieuczciwego postępowania i strategie podejmowane w tzw. grze parametrycznej, a także opisano rozwiązania mające zapobiec takim niepożądanym działaniom, które zapisano w procedowanej Ustawie 2.0.
The pressure on young scientists observed for many years, sanctioned by legal regulations, imposes the obligation on them not only to conduct research and teaching activities, but also to meet the requirements of parameterization. It is the number of publications, sometimes irrespective of their quality, that determines their position at the university, and thus the progress of a research career and access to research funding (i.e. obtaining scholarships or grants). Therefore, it is not surprising that cases of using controversial offers of the so-called predatory publishers or conference organisers are more frequent. Scientists that are under the pillory of parameterization requirements sometimes use such companies unknowingly. The article describes cases of dishonest behaviour known in the scientific world and strategies taken in the so-called parametric game, as well as solutions to prevent such unwanted activities, which were included in the 2.0 Act.

Artykuł opisuje zjawisko “drapieżnych czasopism”, przedstawia ich charakterystyczne cechy, takie jak spamowanie czy wykorzystywanie fałszywych metryk oraz opisuje spowodowane tym problemy przynoszące szkodę nauce. Drapieżne czasopisma często nie prowadzą rzetelnego procesu recenzyjnego, pozwalając na tworzenie pseudonauki pod pozorem prawdziwej nauki. Drapieżne czasopisma często mają fikcyjny zespół redakcyjny, nie są przejrzyste w kwestiach finansów oraz siedziby, zawierają plagiaty i publikują niemalże wszystko. Wydawcy drapieżnych czasopism zachowują się nieetycznie. W zakończeniu artykułu wskazane jest, jak można uniknąć bycia ofiarą drapieżnych czasopism oraz jak można walczyć z drapieżnymi czasopismami.
This paper describes the phenomenon of predatory journals, the characteristics of predatory journals, including spamming and using fake metrics, and the problems they cause for science. Predatory journals often fail to properly manage peer review, allowing pseudo-science to be published dressed up as authentic science. Predatory journals frequently have imaginary editorial boards, do not operate any quality control, are unclear about payment requirements and about ownership or location, include plagiarised content. Predatory publishers generally behave unethically. Towards the end of the paper it is discussed what can and should be done to eliminate or reduce the effects of this development and how researchers can avoid becoming victimized by them.

The new evaluation rules proposed by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education in July 2018 are set to cure some of the ailments of the existing system, notably the “punktoza” phenomenon (i.e. publishing for volume, not scientific quality). However, it should be pointed out that the method of fixing old “bugs” might in fact create some new ones. In this article I discuss three elements of the proposed regulations, namely: the principle of “inheritance of prestige”, treatment of chapters in edited volumes, and possible variants of ministerial registry of academic publishers. To address those issues empirically I use an existing dataset covering citation of books in 2009–2013 (Torres-Salinas et al. 2014). While the new evaluation rules apply relatively high value to chapters in edited volumes, they in fact have disproportionately low scientific impact. What is more, the correlation between citation of books and chapters in edited volumes is very low, casting doubt on the assumed “inheritance of publishers' prestige”. Finally, there seems to be a high risk that the registry of publishers will not reproduce the exponential distribution observed in the actual structure of scientific impact (and apparently sought by the new system), thereby jeopardizing validity of such evaluation.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie edytorskich losów książek Janiny Porazińskiej na rynku wydawniczym i dzięki temu udzielenie od-powiedzi na pytanie, czy Porazińska jest pisarką jeszcze popularną czy już za-pomnianą. Część pierwsza artykułu przybliża postać artystki oraz nakreśla rozwój jej warsztatu literackiego na przestrzeni całego życia. Ponadto, zarysowuje dotychczasowy stan badań dotyczący osoby i twórczości Porazińskiej. Część druga zawiera omówienie dziejów wydawniczych książek pisarki; prezentuje sta-tystyczne dane dotyczące nowych tytułów i ich kolejnych wydań, opatrzone bibliologicznym komentarzem, jak również zawiera próbę periodyzacji popular-ności twórczości autorki Szewczyka Dratewki. Ponadto, omawia kwestie instytucji wydawniczych i ilustratorów zaangażowanych w pracę nad książkami Porazińskiej. Całość ukazuje fenomen literacki pisarki, której książki obecne są na rynku wydawniczym od 103 lat.
The aim of this article is to present the history of publishing works of Janina Porazińska and answer the question of whether Porazińska is still a popular writer or already forgotten one. The first part introduces the charac-ter of the artist and outlines the development of her literary workshop. More-over, it presents the current state of research on the person and work of Pora-zińska. The second part contains a discussion on the history of publishing works of the writer; presents statistical data relating to new titles and their next re-leases, supplemented with a bibliological comment. The article includes an at-tempt of the periodization of the popularity of writer’s books. It also discusses the publishing institutions and illustrators involved in work with Porazińska’s books. The author portrays the literary phenomenon of the writer whose books have been on the publishing market for 103 years now.

Проблемите во преведувањето произлегуваат од културните разлики, а резултатот е слика на современото полско општество во кое има доволно критична мисла, но и вплетена историја како надоврзување на традицијата.
This commentary conserns the reasons and motivation for choosing particular novels to be translated into Macedonian. A short review of their style is given, as well as the common ground with the Macedonian literature. We describe the way of the working of the publishing houses which have decided to publish Polish literature. Problems in translation turn out to be of a cultural nature, concerning the differences and, as a result, the reader is presented with the picture of contemporary Polish society, which is overwhelmed by critical thinking, but still deals with the history as a way to further develop the tradition.

Henryk Sienkiewicz’s novel "Quo Vadis" made its way into Italy at the end of the 19 th century through the efforts of Neapolitan translator Federigo Verdinois. The first part of this paper outlines the history of the popularity of "Quo Vadis" by focusing on the operations of Milanese publishers that made the Polish novel part of their offer in a variety of ways (as translations, adaptations, reworkings, plagiarisms, etc.). Bibliometric methods are used to establish why so many publishing houses decided to publish Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Roman romance. The analysis of the bibliometric data of the published translations helped assess and describe the extent and the character of the popularity that the novel garnered among Milanese publishers. The second part of the paper relates the findings of a multi-method quantitative study of the same material. The number of word tokens was compared between the original and the translations. The lexical richness across the texts under study was compared by means of the moving average type-token ratio (MATTR). Sentence lengths were also compared, as was sentence length distribution as time series. Two different programmes ("WCopyFind and Tracer") yielded very similar results on the degree of the similarity of five-word phrases in pairs of translations, which was determined in network analysis.
L’opera "Quo vadis" di Henryk Sienkiewicz arrivò in Italia alla fine del XIX secolo grazie al traduttore napoletano Federigo Verdinois. Lo scopo della prima parte del contributo è quello di presentare la storia della popolarità del romanzo "Quo vadis" attraverso le azioni delle case editrici milanesi, le quali hanno introdotto l’opera del polacco, in varie forme, nella sua offerta editoriale (come traduzioni, adattamenti, parafrasi, plagi). La ricostruzione della storia delle traduzioni del romanzo romano di Henryk Sienkiewicz è stata possibile grazie al metodo biblometrico che è stato ustato nella prima parte dell’articolo. L’analisi dei dati bibliografici raccolti ha permesso di valutare e descrivere la grandezza e il carattere della popolarità di "Quo vadis" tra gli editori milanesi nella prima parte del XX secolo. Nella seconda parte del contributo per meglio far luce sulle complicate sorti milanesi dell’opera di Sienkiewicz abbiamo usato alcuni metodi d’analisi quantitativa. Abbiamo paragonato il numero delle parole in originale e nelle traduzioni descritte nella prima parte. La ricchezza del vocabolario di tutti i testi esaminati è stata misurata e confrontata usando il calcolo della media mobile del rapporto del numero di parole alla lunghezza del testo (MATTR). Abbiamo confrontato anche le lunghezze delle frasi come serie temporali. I due programmi diversi ("WCopyFind e Tracer"), utili per le analisi delle reti, hanno dato risultati simili per il numero delle somiglianze delle frasi di pentagrammi verbali tra le traduzioni di "Quo vadis".

The paper presents activities of the printing house founded in 1787 at the Jesuit College in Polotsk. The printing house became an academic printing house in 1812; it ceased to exist at the time of the dissolution of the Academy. The group of the most important printing house personnel, including the managing prefects and the employees directly associated with books – from the censors and the coadjutors to the printing house boys, is listed. Based on the existing inventory lists, their workshop, i.e. the printing equipment housed in all the printing house rooms, can be presented in detail, and their printing achievements, i.e. editions of the books stored in the warehouses and the academic bookshop, can be indicated.

The aim of the article is to present a base of Polish Publishers Open Access Policies as a tool supporting the scientific community in the implementation of openness policies. It is the first national platform to gather and analyze a publishing policy in the field of Open Access to Polish scientific journals. For scientists, it is a tool for searching for a Polish journal meeting certain criteria. It enables grant recipients to verify whether the journal meets the principles of Plan S. The database also provides information on the principles of using intellectual property.The functionalities of the database were analyzed based on NCN’s policy comparing them with the principles of publishing research results in Open Access. The specific criteria used in the Polish Publishers Open Access Policies database were compared with other databases: Arianta, SHERPA/RoMEO. The analysis shows that the Polish Publishers Open Access Policy is the only national database for Polish scientific journals, bringing together in one place information necessary for the scientific community on publication in Open Access. The database facilitates project preparation and implementation. Academic librarians, promoting the idea of Open Science, support the scientific community at each stage of the activity described, providing tools, knowledge base and competences.

In the years 1989–2018 the women’s press was an important element of the Polish media market which was dominated by the foreign publishers. The most important of these are Bauer Media, Edipresse Polska, Burda International. Each year the companies introduced new magazines to the market. Their total number was around 100. Most of them settled on the Polish press market and, due to a good position on the market of recipients and advertisers, generated revenue for their publishers. The author captured quantitative changes in the segment of the women’s press, analysed the involvement of the publishers in this part of the press market and highlighted the most important trends.
W latach 1989–2018 prasa kobieca była ważnym elementem polskiego rynku mediów zdominowanym przez zagranicznych wydawców. Do najważniejszych z nich należą: Bauer Media, Edipresse Polska, Burda International. Każdego roku koncerny wprowadzały nowe czasopisma. Łącznie ich liczba oscylowała w okolicach 100. Większość z nich zadomowiała się na polskim rynku prasowym i, dzięki dobrej pozycji na rynku odbiorców i reklamy, generowała przychody swoim wydawcom. W artykule autorka uchwyciła ilościowe przeobrażenia w segmencie prasy kobiecej, przeanalizowała zaangażowanie wydawców w tę część rynku prasowego oraz uwypukliła najistotniejsze tendencje.

This essay is dedicated to an eminent Polish émigré couple in Great Britain, Krystyna Bednarczyk (1923–2011) and Czesław Bednarczyk (1912–1994) who organized one of the most influential cultural centres in London starting in 1950. They initiated their publishing venture by editing small poetry collections written by young Polish poets in exile, illustrated by talented artists. The company was registered by the U.K. authorities as the Poets’ and Painters’ Press. In 1954 they rented a unit under the Arches near Charing Cross and Waterloo and turned it into a successful printing house which eventually closed in 1992. Polish writers from all over the world became their clients, as well as a number of British and other authors and publishers. From 1966 until 1980 they also printed and edited a quarterly magazine of poetry, prose, translations, graphics and artworks. Its 57 issues had contributions from over 100 Polish writers, including at least 30 native Polish poets. The essay is mainly based on published memoirs by Czesław Bednarczyk and unpublished correspondence between the editorial couple and their writer-clients. The author cites positive and negative opinions of Krystyna and Czesław Bednarczyk’s works from various sources, including well known names such as Czesław Miłosz and Jerzy Giedroyć.
