Opis:: The prime difficulty encountered during the conservation of the classical statue of the goddess Cybele was the removal of secondary stratification from its surface. Some, such as the silicate-calcite stratification, were harder than the marble out of which the statue had been executed. The application of laser beams proved to be a much more effective alternative to chemical and physical methods. The laser technique facilitated cleaning the marble surface while preserving the patina, a procedure impossible in the case of traditional methods. The supplementation of missing fragments used thermoplastic putties based on modified Paraloid B-72. This modification made it feasible to lower the temperature rendering Paraloid B-72 more flexible to a level lower than 100°C, safe for the crystalline structure of the marble.

Autor dowodzi, że ustanowienie posagu nie było darowizną. W oparciu o materiał źródłowy wskazuje na różnice pomiędzytymi instytucjami, które wynikały z różnych funkcji przez nie speł-nianych. Autor przypomina, że reguły prawne dotyczące posagu byłykonsekwencją różnych zadań i ról mężczyzny i kobiety, jaką mieliw małżeństwie. Posag, w odróżnieniu od darowizny, odgrywał rolęnie tylko indywidualną, gdyż w interesie przyszłych pokoleń czyliw interesie publicznym leżało, aby dzieci dorastały w rodzinacho dobrej sytuacji finansowej. W imperium, które prowadziło stalewojny chciano też zapewnić, aby wdowy i sieroty były zabezpieczone. W konsekwencji, z racji różnych ograniczeń dotyczących causadonandi, prawnicy rzymscy zmuszeni byli wykreować favor dotis, abywyraźnie rozróżnić dos i donatio.

Opis:: After the death of his first wife Zuzanna Sereda (1596), Janusz Ostrogski (1554-1620), Castellan of Cracow, married fifteen-year-old Katarzyna Lubomirska (1582-1611). Their wedding took place in Nowy Sacz on November 25, 1597. Katarzyna was the eldest daughter of Sebastian Lubomirski (c. 1546-1613) Castellan of Małogoszcz and żupnik of Kraków and Anna Branicka (1567-1639). It is difficult to assess whether Katarzyna’s feelings mattered for her parents while they were choosing a husband for her. Age of the bride and the age difference between spouses suggests that marriage was considered by Janusz Ostrogski as a way to sustain and strengthen links with the Lubomirskis house. Immediately after the wedding, in addition to the dowry, which included a sum of money, the daughter received trousseau. These were the things for her personal and household use, such as clothing, silver jewels, carpets, and animals. The published list of Katarzyna Lubomirska’s trousseau of 1597 shows both the Lubomirskis family fortune, as well as, penchant of the Polish nobility for rich robes and furs prevailing at the end of the 16th century . Costly garments were supplemented by rich jewels of gold and precious stones. This list of troussou is input to the development of description of the culture of everyday life, wealth, economic relations and of social differentiation within the nobility.

Opis:: Images of emperors of Julio-Claudian dynasty and especially the most famous representation of Octavian Augustus of Prima Porta, became the prototype representation of emperors-officers for the representatives of the next dynasty wielding Roman Empire. Statue of Augustus, no doubt modeled on Doryphoros – a statue made by Polykleitos (sculptor-foundry of classical Greek era) is an example of the propaganda image of the emperor. Statua loricata – a statue of Octavian in the breastplate – presents emperor during adlocutio – speech addressed to the army. Models of classical Greek sculpture exhibit at the statue of the emperor by using position called contrapposto and deification of the emperor by showing him barefoot. Among other things, lack of shoes indicates that the statue of Octavian was made after the death of the ruler. The divine pedigree of the emperor was also marked by the attributes that are on his right leg – Cupid and dolphin. Head of Augustus was also performed on the model Doryphoros, and its distinctive hairstyle is defined as a „Primaporta” type. The most important element of the Prima Porta statue of the emperor is his breastplate. Armor classified as a torso cuirass is here as long type – with the downward extension, meant to protect the lower abdominal part. Armor probably originally made of leather, on the statue of Octavian is very richly decorated with historical and mythological reliefs. In the central part of the armor was shown a scene that shows the Parthians transferring military signs (signum militare) that have been lost by Marcus Crassus in 53 BC. On both sides of middle scene, were placed two women – personifications of lands conquered by Rome. The whole presentation is observed by the images of deities: Tellus Mater – Mother of Earth, Apollo, Diana, the god of the Sun – Sol, goddess of the moon – Luna and the God of heaven – Caelus. Statue of Augustus from Prima Porta combines classical designs of sculptures of Polykleitos period and contemporary elements of the propaganda of the imperial policy of the Augustus principate. Sculpture showing the first emperor of the Roman Empire, dressed in breastplate has become an example image of the rulers shown as the leaders of the army but also showing the immense power of propaganda policy.

Opis:: Mieczysław Ludwik Potodci of Lubicz crest came from Bracław voivodship. Born in 1810 in Lwów he studied in Warsaw University and later fought in the November Uprising. For many years he ran Kociubińczyki, his Galician estate near Husiatyn. It was only by accident that he became member — correspondent of the Cracow Scientific Society. After handing over a statute of Światowid (a pagan deity) found in the waters of the Zbruch, M. L. Potocki started collecting coins and archaeological objects for his private „Museum of Antiques” . As a member of the Cracow Scientific Society he travelled a lot for scientific purposes in Lubelska Gubernyia and in Galicia. In 1864 M. L. Potocki was appoited monuments conservator in East Galicia and published several reports on conservation activities. He spent his last years in Lwów where he worked in the National Archaeological Museum. A year before his death M. L. Potocki was elected chairman of the section of archaeology and antropology. During his stay in Lubelska Gubemyia he decided to write a comprehensive monography (in two volumes) of the town and fortress of Zamość. The work was written finally in 1858—1862 and he wrote it together with Priest-Mikołaj Kulaszynski. Józef Friedlein, a Cracow book dealer, bought the manuscript from the author and wanted to have it printed but never fulfilled the task due to the shortage of funds. In 1926 Henryk Rosiński, a bibliophile from Zamość, bought the manuscript from Firedlein’s successor, Józef Munnich. After World War II and the aeath of Henryk Rosiński in Auschwitz, his sister passed on his collections including the manuscript to the Museum in Zamość, where it is still now.

Opis:: W omawianym okresie w krajach czeskich rodzina składała się zwykle z 5–7 osób. Tworzyli ją ojciec, matka i dzieci. Założenie rodziny było uwarunkowane zgodą przedstawiciela władzy zwierzchniej (na wsi) i magistratu (w miastach). Również po zniesieniu pańszczyzny w monarchii habsburskiej (1781 r.) w parafiach katolickich wymagano od urzędów zwierzchnich tzw. potwierdzenia o niekaralności, natomiast u osób poniżej 24. roku życia (wiek umownej dorosłości) do zawarcia małżeństwa konieczna była tak że zgoda opiekunów prawnych (rodziców). Partnera wybierali rodzice, kierując się głównie posiadanym przez niego majątkiem i zajmowaną pozycją społeczną. Ślub zawierały zwykle osoby pochodzące nie tylko z tej samej warstwy społecznej, ale też z tej samej miejscowości lub bliskiej okolicy. Prawo nie regulowało dolnej granicy wieku, koniecznej do zawarcia małżeństwa, jednak kawaler liczący mniej niż 20 lat należał do rzadkości, natomiast panien poniżej 20. roku życia było około 1/5. Rodzina stanowiła małą grupę społeczną tworzoną jednostkami połączonymi więzami małżeństwa, pokrewieństwa lub adopcji. Była rozumiana jako instytucja najwyższej wartości. Jej nienaruszalność gwarantowało wiele przepisów oraz tradycja. W pierwszej połowie XIX wieku kobiety wychodziły za mąż najczęściej w wieku 20–25 lat, a mężczyźni w wieku 25–30 lat. W miastach mężczyźni żenili się mając nawet około 50 lat lub więcej. W rodzinach mieszczańskich podnosił się także wiek narzeczonych, podobnie jako okres trwania narzeczeństwa. Dotyczyło to zwłaszcza urzędników; w ich przypadku założenie rodziny było uzależnione od osiągnięcia określonej pozycji. Ponadto, zgodnie z dekretem cesarskim z 1800 roku, każdy urzędnik państwowy lub miejski musiał posiadać zgodę swojego przełożonego, o ile jego pensja nie osiągnęła pewnego pułapu finansowego. W przypadku żandarmerii, żołnierzy, straży finansowej i nauczycieli pozwolenie na ślub było związane ze zdobyciem pewnej pozycji służbowej. Na Morawach, w porównaniu z Czechami, wcześniej zawierano związki małżeńskie. Około 1/10 ludności w krajach czeskich była stanu wolnego. Biorąc pod uwagę kobiety chodziło o służące, córki mniej zamożnych rzemieślników, urzędników lub panny pochodzące z zubożałych rodzin szlacheckich, które nie posiadały wystarczająco wysokiego posagu. W pierwszej połowie XIX wieku, przede wszystkim w miastach, zwiększała się liczba tzw. ślubów odroczonych. Mamy tu na myśli związki małżeńskie zawierane dopiero wówczas, kiedy para partnerów miała już kilka nieślubnych dzieci; było to szczególnie widoczne w obszarach przygranicznych zamieszkałych przez ludność niemiecką.
In the period in question, the family in the Czech Lands was usually comprised of between five and seven members – father, mother and children. Founding a family was subject to the agreement of the lord of the manor (in the countryside) or the municipal authority (in the town). „Confirmation of probity” was requested from the seigniorial authorities in Catholic parishes even after the abolition of serfdom in the Habsburg monarchy (1781), while the approval of the couple’s legal representatives (parents) was also required in the case of the marriage of people younger than twenty-four (the age of maturity). Partners were chosen by parents according to their property and social standing. People to be married were generally not only from the same social class, but also from the same place or nearby in the surrounding area. No lower age limit for marriage was stipulated by the law, though grooms younger than twenty were the exception, while around a fifth of brides were younger than twenty. The family represented a small social group comprised of individuals joined by marriage, consanguinity or adoption. It was seen as an institution to which the greatest regard was given. Its integrity was protected by a number of laws and traditions. In the first half of the nineteenth century, women usually got married between the ages of twenty and twenty-five, and men between the ages of twenty-five and thirty. The upper age limit, however, approached a figure of as much as fifty, or even exceeded it, for men living in towns. The age of brides was also higher in town families, among which couples being engaged for many years was also not unusual. This was particularly common among clerical workers, who had to attain a certain standing in order to be able to found a family. What’s more, according to the imperial decree of 1800, every state or municipal official needed the agreement of his superior if his pay had not reached a certain financial „ceiling”. A marriage licence was also conditional to the attainment of a certain service position for policemen, soldiers, financial guards and teachers. People entered into marriage earlier in Moravia than in Bohemia. Around ten percent of the population of the Czech Lands remained unmarried. As far as women were concerned, these were maids and the daughters of less affluent tradesmen, clerical workers or poor aristocratic families that did not have a sufficiently large dowry. In the first half of the nineteenth century, there was an increasing number of „deferred weddings”, particularly in the towns, when a couple became married only when they already had a number of illegitimate children; this was particularly evident in the border areas inhabited by a German population.

Opis:: Pomnik Wielkiego Buddy z miejscowości Bamyan w Afganistanie został wybudowany między III, a VII w. n. e. Dzięki swym monumentalnym rozmiarom był dziełem unikatowym na skalę światową. Stanowił największy starożytny pomnik, przedstawiający stojącą postać Wielkiego Buddy, który w 2001 roku został doszczętnie zniszczony. W prezentowanym artykule, wykorzystano zdjęcia archiwalne posągu, które zostały wykonane kamerą stereometryczną, w czasie Studenckiej Wyprawy Azjatyckiej studentów Wydziału Geodezji i Kartografii Politechniki Warszawskiej w 1974 roku. Wykorzystując oprogramowanie PhotoModeler Pro 4.0. opracowano szkieletowy i rzeczywisty model przestrzenny posągu Wielkiego Buddy. Na podstawie przedstawionego opracowania dokonano weryfikacji wykorzystania oprogramowania dla postawionego celu oraz dokonano oceny posiadanych zdjęć archiwalnych. Oszacowane błędy wyznaczenia współrzędnych punktów modelu, wahają się od kilkunastu centymetrów do kilku metrów, w zależności od położenia punktu. Uzyskano wysoką wewnętrzną spójność pomiarów punktów homologicznych, która wyniosła średnio 0.07% dla poszczególnych elementów posągu. Uwzględniając rzeczywiste rozmiary Wielkiego Buddy, oraz fakt, że niewiele jest zachowanych zdjęć archiwalnych tego pomnika, stwierdzono, że opracowane dane można uznać za wystarczająco dokładne do odbudowy zniszczonego obiektu zabytkowego.
The Great Buddha statue of Bamyan in Afghanistan was 53 meters high and therefore was considered to be the largest ancient depiction of a standing person. On the basis of the sculpture’s structure, stylistics and historical information, the date of the Great Buddha was estimated to be between the 3rd and 7th century AD. Unfortunately, in spite of its enormous historical value, it was totally destroyed at the beginning of 2001. However, because of its great artistic value, in the past some approaches to its reconstruction have been made, but they were repeatedly interrupted by military actions. Fortunately, now it seems that preparations for reconstruction of this sculpture will begin soon. Thelack of sufficient data on the shape of the statue was another problem. From literature review it appears that no accurate documentation survived. Because of that any information on the appearance and structure of the statue dating from before the destruction is very valuable and could play an important role in the statue’s physical reconstruction. The topic of this article is a presentation of the Great Buddha statue’s 3D model reconstruction based on archival copies of metric photographs, which were taken by the stereometric camera Wild C120 during the Student Asiatic Expedition organized by the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology in 1974. The 3D model of the sculpture was made with the use of the PhotoModeler Pro 4.0 software, which was designed for making 3D models of close-range objects based on monocular observations. On the basis of this project an opinion on possibilities of the use of the mentioned software in this type of tasks has been formulated. Radiometric and geometric quality of the photographic documentation, as well as its usefulness for reconstruction of the Great Buddha statue, have also been verified.

Opis:: The coronation of Maria Kazimiera Sobieska in 1676 has not substantially changed her economic status. The parliament endowed on her a lifelong right to hold the crown lands, for which she previously obtained ius comunicativum jointly with her husband. The custom that the royal couple cannot own inheritable his has been abandoned. She won the dispute about the inheritance from her first husband. The advantages of being king’s wife included entitlement to a housing aid, traditionally granted to kings’ spouses. Consequently, Maria Kazimiera Sobieska was granted three housing aids: one after the death of her first husband, Jan Zamoyski, a second after the death of Jan Sobieski, and a third – as the wife of the king of Poland. Maria Kazimiera Sobieska was actively trying to create strong financial fundaments for her and her family, taking advantage of her position as the queen. She was obtaining revenue from illegally giving away crown lands and offices by her husband Jan the Third. After the death of the king, she divided her assets between her and her sons. The revenue coming from goods accrued by her allowed her to maintain royal status after leaving the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Opis:: The article deals with the institution of dowry in the royal marriage contracts. It is based on the sources consisted of eleven preserved marital contracts of the Polish kings from 1453–1669. The dowry was designated by the formal guardian of the bride who possessed the property of which the dowry was charged. In the event of bride’s father’s death, it was done by a guardianship council or a mother with close relatives. In seven out of eleven analyzed contracts (of which six concerned wives of the Habsburg provenance) the amount of dowry was 100,000 florins. However the dowry of two Habsburgs differed from the previous amount – it amounted 45,000 florins each. Exceptionally a dowry amounted up to 200,000 florins. In the sources we did not find any data proving the effects of not keeping the provisions of the marriage agreements.
Artykuł traktuje o instytucji posagu w królewskich kontraktach małżeńskich. Podstawę źródłową stanowi 11 zachowanych umów małżeńskich z lat 1453–1669. Posag był wyznaczany przez formalnego opiekuna panny młodej, mającego w posiadaniu dobra, z których należał się posag. W przypadku śmierci ojca czyniła to rada opiekuńcza lub matka z najbliższymi krewnymi. Wśród analizowanych umów, w siedmiu przypadkach (z których sześć dotyczyło małżonek proweniencji habsburskiej) wysokość posagu wynosiła 100 000 fl. Posag dwóch Habsburżanek, żon Zygmunta III, odbiegał od podanej wysokości i wynosił po 45 000 fl . Do wyjątków należał też posag rzędu 200 000 fl . W źródłach nie napotkaliśmy informacji o zastosowaniu restrykcji przewidzianych w umowie na wypadek niedochowania warunków umowy ślubnej.

Opis:: Związek małżeński Ludwiki Marii Gonzaga z Władysławem IV Wazą wyniósł księżniczkę na szczyt hierarchii społecznej. Postanowienia kontraktów małżeńskich z 1645 i z 1649 roku były bardzo korzystne dla Ludwiki Marii. Wysokość posagu wynosiła 2 100 000 liwrów. Z tej kwoty król Polski otrzymywał 600 000 liwrów. Pozostała suma była do dyspozycji królowej. Ludwika Maria miała otrzymać od Rzeczypospolitej oprawę posagu. Zachowywała ona również prawo do własnego majątku we Francji i w Rzeczypospolitej. Pozycja prawno-majątkowa królowej stwarzała dobrą podstawę dla realizacji jej zamierzeń.
The Ludwika Maria matrimony with Władysław IV Waza took the princess out for the peak of the social hierarchy. The amount of the dowry was 2 100 000 livres. The king of Poland obtained 600 000 liwrów from this amount. The remaining amount was at the disposal of Louise Marie. The Queen was to receive from the Republic of Poland the housing of a dowry. The Queen has retained the right to property in France and in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Opis:: Kontrakt małżeński nakładał na króla obowiązek zabezpieczenia posagu królowej. W szlacheckiej Rzeczypospolitej monarcha nie miał prywatnego majątku. Decyzje o zabezpieczeniu posagu królowej podejmowała Rzeczpospolita czyli stany sejmujące. Po śmierci króla na utrzymanie królowej wdowy uchwalano oprawę wdowią. Zabezpieczenie przyznane Annie Jagiellonce stanowiło rekompensatę za zrzeczenie się przez nią prawa do spadku dynastycznego na rzecz Królestwa Polskiego. Inicjatorem zabezpieczenia posagu w okresie bezkrólewia były zgromadzenia szlacheckie, po elekcji – monarcha, wyjątkowo – sama królowa. Zainteresowani ustanowieniem reformacji byli dyplomaci tego dworu, z którego wywodziła się małżonka króla, zaś w okresie ostatniej elekcji (1764 r.) – dyplomaci rosyjscy. Odbywało się to często w trakcie ostrej walki politycznej między opozycją a królem. Zgoda na uchwalenie oprawy stawała się jedną z form presji wywieranej na władcę, mającą go skłonić do odstąpienia od pewnych zamiarów zagrażających wolnościom szlachty. Okoliczności towarzyszące każdorazowo ustanowieniu zabezpieczenia oprawy królowej były inne. Panujący musiał czasem ponawiać żądanie uchwalenia oprawy dla królowej na następnym sejmie. Praktyka pokazała, że wniosek monarchy, mimo oporu opozycji, rozstrzygany był zwykle po jego myśli.
Prenuptial contracts obliged the king to insure the queen’s dowry. Without fulfilling this condition, the queen’s dowry was not transferred to the king. In the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth the monarch did not own private assets. Decisions about insuring the queen’s dowry were taken by the Parliament of the Commonwealth (Sejm Rzeczypospolitej Szlacheckiej). After the king’s death, the maintenance of the queen widow was secured with the widow’s dowry insurance. The dowry insurance of Anna Jagiellonka constituted a compensation for her right to the family inheritance, which she renounced in favor of the Polish Kingdom. During the interregnum, the initiative to secure the queen’s dowry was taken by the Parliament after the election – by the monarch, in exceptional circumstances – the queen herself. Diplomats of the queen’s royal house insisted that the Parliament grants the dowry insurance, while during the last election (1764) this interest was represented by Russian diplomats. Securing the queen’s dowry often took place in a vehement political fight between the king and his opposition, which tried to force the king into making political concession. Circumstances in which the dowry insurance was granted were different each time. Sometimes the king had to repeat on the next parliamentary session his request to grant the insurance to the queen. The practice shows that the king’s request was usually granted, notwithstanding the resistance of the political opposition.
