Opis:
Pneumatic brake, which use compressed air as a working medium, is the main brake of rail vehicles. The equipment used in the braking system requires sufficiently clean, without water vapour medium to work properly. Removing water vapour from the air prevents condensation and ice formation during winter, which guarantees correct brake operation. For this purpose, adsorption dryers are used in the railways to ensure the required pressure dew point value. This article includes an overview of available compressed air drying methods, the results of calculations and bench test of the dryer prototype developed at the Institute. Assumptions and requirements for the device intended for use in railways are based on European standards and UIC cards.

Artykuł przedstawia wybrane aspekty tworzenia modelu symulacyjnego złoża fluidalnego w fontannowej suszarce do ziarna, związane z doborem odpowiednich formuł obliczeniowych, uściślających ogólny model matematyczny układu dwufazowego typu fluid-solid. W pracy umieszczono wybrane wyniki symulacji numerycznych oraz przedstawiono optymalne: konfiguracje formuł obliczeniowych dające wyniki zgodne z eksperymentem.
The paper presents some aspects dealing with the formulation of a flu-idized bed simulation model in a spouted bed grain dryer. Appropriate selection of the relevant calculation formulae enabled one to specify the general mathematical model of multiphase fluid-solid flow. Some numerical simulations as well as optimal configurations of calculation formulae, giving results consistent with the experiments, are presented in the paper.

In this study the convectional drying process of peach were investigated. Peaches were cut longitudinally into eight similar pieces and were dried in a laboratory air-drier with forced horizontal air flow. Drying experiments were carried out at temperatures of 50, 60, 70oC and for two air velocities: 1.0 and 1.2 m/s. The results are shown graphically on the charts. It was found that a greater effect on increasing the rate of drying is the drying air temperature than the increase in flow velocity. The verification of theoretical models of the first and second drying period indicates that the drying process of peach is determined by internal conditions of heat and mass transfer, therefore to describe the drying process were used models of the second period of drying. Global relative error calculated for the whole process was less than 5%.

The purpose of the paper is to present a concept of energy efficiency and financial evaluation of counter flow dryer. Energy efficiency and many other efficiency indexes of the dryer and all additional devices like heater, heat exchangers, tubing and fans are calculated. Expert system provides also the financial evaluation of the investment. Many investments could be considered. The system provides the user with suggestions about the best dryer for him/her. Expert system also enables evaluation of energy saving improvements. The energy savings for dryer installation sections are calculated. Cost savings are compared with investment value. The best energy saving project could be selected on the base of selection algorithm. Expert system could be used for existing and new-designed dryers.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the performance of a novel indirect type free convection solar dryer. The novel and a conventional indirect passive solar dryer were built. Solar irradiation and temperature of different locations were recorded. The air at the drying chamber entrance, lower space, and upper space temperatures besides the thermal efficiency of the novel dryer were 68, 39, 49 and 85%, respectively, higher than the conventional one.

Drying of food is perhaps the oldest method of food preservation. The aim of this study the analysis of the effect of changing the slope angle of trays in a tunnel dryer model on the drying rate. Real experiments were carried out for trays’ slopes of 0, 5, 10 and 15°. Carrots’ cubes were dried at a constant temperature of 60°C, with air flow velocity of 1.2 m/s. Also this process was simulated using the COMSOL Multiphysics 4.3 software. The research results showed that increasing slope angle of tray disrupted the laminar flow of the dried cubes layer through the drying air stream and forced the partial air flow through the layer. Thus, the contact surface of the heated air with the material particles and the drying rate have been increased and made it possible to shorten the duration of the drying.

The results of a numerical simulation of a spouted bed grain dryer based on the Eulerian Multiphase Model are presented. The influence of various model parameters on the height of the fountain forming in the drying chamber was analyzed. The following computer model parameters were considered: air inlet velocity, grain size and density, and the lowering of bed surface resulting from drying shrinkage and grain pack. An analysis of the approach of turbulence modeling of similar systems is included. The number of computation dimensions and numerical grids is discussed. The presented studies are based on earlier experiments conducted at a dedicated experimental station. Their main objective was to determine the basic principles of modeling fluidized beds found in grain dryers and the computer model's sensitivity to changes in its basic parameters.

Drying of sultana grape fruits was studied using a microwave dryer under the laboratory environment at the Department of Agricultural Machinery and Technologies Engineering at Suleyman Demirel University. In this study, the effects of microwave drying and fan assisted microwave drying on drying time, drying ratio of grape samples were examined. Sultana grape fruits were dried by using microwave, microwave-convective combination and convective drying, respectively. The effects of microwave drying (180, 540 and 720 W); combined convective and microwave drying (180W-100ºC, 360W-100ºC and 540 W-100ºC), convective drying (100, 150, 200ºC) on drying time, drying rate of grape samples have been investigated. The drying data were applied to four different mathematical models, namely, Midilli-Kucuk, Weibull distribution, logistic and Alıbas Equation Models. The performances of these models were compared according to the coefficient of determination (R2), standard error of estimate (SEE) and residual sum of squares (RSS), between the observed and predicted moisture ratios. The drying characteristic curves were estimated against four mathematical models and the Weibull distribution was found to be the best descriptive model for all the drying experiments of thin layer grape fruit samples except for 540W-100ºC. Alıbas model equation was also found to be the best descriptive model for combined microwave and convective drying (540W-100ºC).

Opis:
Dairy industry liquid products have short terms of validity. Therefore, it has become very popular to produce dairy products in the form of powder. This powder is obtained by a two-step spray drying method. At an initial stage, the raw material is preliminarily dried in a spray dryer (to get 10% moisture). At the following stage, it is thoroughly dried in a vibrating fluidized bed dryer (3-4% moisture). Fluidization is a process, in which dry grains of solid contact fluid to generate a fluidized bed that behaves similarly to boiling liquid. Owing to this process, powder of improved physicochemical properties is formed. The aim of our study was to describe the construction and working principles of a whey vibrating fluidized bed dryer.
Płynne produkty przemysłu mleczarskiego mają krótkie terminy przydatności do spożycia. Dlatego popularne stało się produkowanie sproszkowanych produktów mlecznych. Do produkcji tych proszków stosuje się metodę dwustopniowego suszenia rozpyłowego. W pierwszej fazie surowiec jest suszony w suszarce rozpyłowej (do 10% wilgotności), a następnie dosuszany w wibrofluidyzatorze (3-4% wilgotności). Fluidyzacja to proces kontaktowania się suchych ziaren ciała stałego z płynem, aby wytworzyć złoże fluidalne, które zachowuje się podobnie do wrzącej cieczy. Dzięki temu procesowi powstaje proszek o lepszych właściwościach fizykochemicznych. Celem niniejszej pracy jest opisanie budowy i zasady działania wibrofluidyzatora do serwatki.

The aim of this study was to encapsulate, L-ascorbic acid, in biopolymers in order to obtain (i) enhancing its encapsulation efficiency (ii) increasing drug release ratio using different pH mediums. Microparticles based on polycaprolactone, polyethylene glycol and casein are prepared by spray drying technique. Microparticles are in vitro characterized in terms of yield of production, particle size, morphology, encapsulation efficiency, and drug release. In this manner, the importance of the study is producing of a stable and effective drug encapsulation system by PCL-PEG-CS polymer mixture by spray dryer. We achieved minimum 27.540±0.656 μm particle size with 0.512 m2/g surface area, 84.05% maximum drug loading, and 68.92% drug release ratio at pH 9.6. Release profiles are fitted to previously developed kinetic models to differentiate possible release mechanisms. The Korsmeyer–Peppas model is the best described each release scenario, and the drug release is governed by non-Fickian diffusion at pH 9.6. Our study proposed as an alternative or adjuvants for controlling release of L-ascorbic acid.

Sewage sludge was dried in a rotary drum dryer under superheated steam. Particle size and moisture content were shown to have significant influences on sticking and agglomeration of the materials. Pouring partially dried sludge (70–80% moisture content, wet basis) directly into the screw feeder of the drum dryer resulted in a significant sticking to the surface of the drum and the final particle size of the product was greater than 100 mm in diameter. The moisture content of this product was slightly less than its initial value. To overcome this issue, the sludge was mixed with lignite at variety ratios and then chopped before being introduced to the feeding screw. It was found that mixing the sludge with lignite and then sieving the chopped materials through a four millimetre mesh sieve was the key to solve this issue. This technique significantly reduced both stickiness and agglomeration of the material. Also, this enabled for a significant reduction in moisture content of the final product.

Isparta rose is an agricultural product that provides world-wide awareness to our country, offering social and cultural aspects and touristic and economic contributions. Turkey and Bulgaria are two major countries that produce rose for economic return. Isparta rose (rose damascena) is a therapeutic fragrant flower used in aromatherapy applications besides oil production. The aim of this study is to determine the energy and cost analysis of drying of rose (Rosa damascena). Additionally, the energy consumption and unit cost of screening and separation was determined. Experiments were carried out in the Yakaören Rose Oil Factory of Gülbirlik, which was established in the village of Yakaören in the center of Isparta province. Temperatures of 45°C and 55°C were chosen as drying temperature in the experiment. According to the results of the research, work capacity for temperatures of 45°C and 55°C were 0.32 kg×h-1 and 0.63 kg×h-1, respectively. Specific energy consumption (SEC) for the same temperatures were 2.48 kWh×kg-1 and 8.96 kWh×kg-1, respectively. Specific moisture extraction rates (SMER) were found to be 0.402 and 0.112 kg×kWh-1. The unit drying cost was for the two drying temperatures of 45°C and 55°C are 0.51 and 1.84 Turkish liras (TL), respectively. As a result; the work capacity, SEC, MER and unit drying cost at a temperature of 55°C was found to be higher than the work capacity at a temperature of 45°C. However, SMER at 55°C was lower than drying at 45°C temperature. For this reason, rose drying at a temperature of 45 degrees is advantageous in SEC, SMER and Unit Drying Cost compared to drying roses at 55 degrees.

The cultivation of herbs in Poland is one of the newest sectors of plant production despite the centuries-old tradition of using herbs across the world. Contemporary herbal processing in Poland is primarily oriented to the production of herbal medicines, as in many other European countries. The cultivation, harvesting and processing of herbs in small and medium-sized farms require machinery and devices adjusted to the scale of production. The processing of herbal plants involves drying, which is one of the most important stages of herb preservation and the most energy-consuming process occurring in agricultural production. A comprehensive review is presented covering the various methods used in agriculture to preserve herbal plants and the classification of solar-energy and hot-air drying systems. In addition the paper presents examples of the development of solutions using low-temperature herb dryers appropriate to small and medium-sized farms.

Celem badań była ocena energochłonności i ekonomii pracy osuszaczy ziębniczych firmy Hiross oraz projektu pracowników Politechniki Poznańskiej (z rekuperacją i bez niej) przy porównywalnych parametrach powietrza sprężonego. Najniższe zużycie mocy osiągał osuszacz PP z rekuperacją. Osuszacz PP bez rekuperacji i osuszacz Hiross wykazywały prawie takie samo zużycie mocy dla powietrza o temperaturze wejściowej ok. 12°C.
The assessment of energy consumption and economy of refrigerant dryers: one of Hiross company and two designed by employees of Poznań University of Technology (with and without recuperation) having comparable compressed air parameters were studied. The lowest power consumption was reached by the PP dryer with recuperation. The PP dryer without heat recovery and the Hiross air drier showed almost the same power consumption for air inlet temperature of approx. 12°C.
