The academic community was and still is a community of scholars taking various positions. Problematic was and still is the changing of ways we set these posi- tions in both, in relation to a long lasting academic tradition and in a much short- er period of academic activity of particular scholars. Some of these ways did show in a greater extent its own usability and some in lesser. In these remarks I make the attempt to point out those who did work out well and in some way still do and which ones should be history by now. However it is not all. Relatively recently ways of positioning of scholars occurred that are in some perspectives innovative and widely applied (also in Poland). Nevertheless they do have in the academic millieu its followers and radical opponents. The bibliometric positioning of scho- lars is one of those ways.

The completion of ECDIS mandatory implementation period on-board SOLAS vessels requires certain operational, functional and educational gaping holes to be solved. It especially refers to positioning and its redundancy, which represents fundamental safety factor on-board navigating vessels. The proposed paper deals with primary and secondary positioning used in ECDIS system. Standard positioning methods are described, discussing possibilities of obtained positions’ automatic and manual implementation in ECDIS, beside default methods. With the aim of emphasizing the need and importance of using secondary positioning source in ECDIS, positioning issue from the standpoint of end-users was elaborated, representing a practical feedback of elaborated topic. The survey was conducted in the form of international questionnaire placed among OOWs, ranging from apprentice officers to captains. The result answers and discussion regarding (non)usage of secondary positioning sources in ECDIS were analysed and presented. Answers and statements were elaborated focusing not only in usage of the secondary positioning system in ECDIS, but in navigation in general. The study revealed potential risks arising from the lack of knowledge and even negligence. The paper concludes with summary of findings related to discrepancies between theoretical background, good seamanship practice and real actions taken by OOWs. Further research activities are pointed out, together with planned practical actions in raising awareness regarding navigation with ECDIS.

Opis:
From the perspective of ensuring life safety, combined with the advantages of high-speed time response and energy conservation of white light emitting diodes (LEDs), the visible light indoor positioning algorithm based on fire safety is proposed in the paper. First, the model is designed which needs three LED lights arranged in a straight line and positioned in the geographically north direction on the top of the model. Then, the proposed algorithm is discussed and analyzed when the camera is located at the center of the model and facing north, when the camera is located at the center of the model and the angle is rotated, and when the camera is located at any position of the model, respectively. It can accurately calculate the current position of the camera, its response speed is fast and the positioning accuracy is high. Furthermore, this paper also verifies the practicability and reliability of the algorithm by designing the visible light indoor positioning system based on fire safety rescue in natural environment and smoke environment. The experimental results show that the positioning error does not exceed 0.70 cm in smoke environment.

This paper sets out to test the possibilities of the Positioning Theory as a means to approach small group phenomena from a micro-cultural perspective. The study draws on a transcription of a videotaped inter-professional team meeting in the field of social services. Analysis of the data was set to examine how the basic concepts of the Positioning Theory suit the analysis of in-group phenomena, what different forms of positioning are present, and how the positioning is connected to the group processes. Studying the group’s interaction shows how it is possible to approach the interaction via the basic concepts of the Positioning Theory and how the positioning is intervened with group processes, such as decision-making, arguing, and conflict. The study also offers a new theoretical and empirical perspective to the research on small group dynamics.

Thanks to the use of satellite positioning systems (including GPS) the ability to determine a user's position in open spaces has become a necessary element of everyday life. Nowadays people cannot imagine moving in an "urban jungle” with paper maps without electronic support, but dozens of years ago those maps were more popular than satellite navigation. A similar revolution may also await navigations in closed spaces such as public or commercial buildings. Because as the urbanisation process, the surfaces of various buildings grow, which significantly impedes orientation in them, especially for the blind or visually impaired users. As satellite navigation systems are burdened with errors, which increase when trying to use them in confined spaces, it becomes necessary to use more accurate technology. As a step towards solving this problem, we propose a solution supporting the navigation of users, especially the visually impaired, inside buildings. Our approach is based on using low energy Bluetooth transmitters and a method of determining the user's position using the trilateration algorithm and the appropriate placement of transmitters in a space.

This paper analyses the performance of Differential Head-Related Transfer Function (DHRTF), an alternative transfer function for headphone-based virtual sound source positioning within a horizontal plane. This experimental one-channel function is used to reduce processing and avoid timbre affection while preserving signal features important for sound localisation. The use of positioning algorithm employing the DHRTF is compared to two other common positioning methods: amplitude panning and HRTF processing. Results of theoretical comparison and quality assessment of the methods by subjective listening tests are presented. The tests focus on distinctive aspects of the positioning methods: spatial impression, timbre affection, and loudness fluctuations. The results show that the DHRTF positioning method is applicable with very promising performance; it avoids perceptible channel coloration that occurs within the HRTF method, and it delivers spatial impression more successfully than the simple amplitude panning method.

Opis:
In the end of XX century we were witnesses of the revolution in a radio-navigation, which led to the present domination of GPS. Dozens of radio-navigation systems disappeared. However now in many papers more and more often we can read an opinion, that GNSS monopoly becomes dangerous. This results from the similar sensibility of all GNSS systems on the same disturbances consequential from the similar radiofrequency band and similarly low powers of the signal. There is a growing approval in the maritime world that GNSS will not provide a required resilience because of common vulnerabilities. An anticipated radio navigation system should be a combination of systems, providing redundancy and effective work when GNSS does not work properly. Lately a lot of authors commonly pointed-out a potential advantages of modified Loran (e-Loran), however surely still it will be only a potential option, particularly for the southern hemisphere, where this system has never existed. An issue of alternative systems becomes urgent, because of the growing concern about GNSS system operation. The solution should not demand high financial effort, well fit to the existing law and utilize a present technology. The paper presents a general outlook of potential development in a present radar devices considering their use as an element of a positioning system. In this context radar seems to be an attractive option, however its utilization as an alternative for GNSS should reach considerably higher technical performances. The accessible information prove that it is possible to reach a higher accuracy of the position obtained from the modified radar in the future, especially with the suitable navigational infrastructure on shore.

This work proposes context aware handover algorithms for mobile positioning systems. The algorithms perform handover among positioning systems based on important contextual factors related to position determination with efficient use of battery. The proposed solution is implemented in the form of an Android application named Locate@nav6. The performance of the proposed solution was tested in selected experimental areas. The handover performance was compared with other existing location applications. The proposed solution performed correct handover among positioning systems in 95 percent of cases studied while two other applications performed correct handover in only 50 percent of cases studied. Battery usage of the proposed solution is less than one third of the battery usage of two other applications. The analysis of the positioning error of the applications demonstrated that, the proposed solution is able to reduce positioning error indirectly by handing over the task of positioning to an appropriate positioning system. This kept the average error of positioning below 42.1 meters for Locate@nav6 while the average error for two other applications namely Google Latitude and Malaysia maps was between 92.7 and 171.13 meters.

Provision of uninterrupted and robust Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) services is essential task of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) as an enabling technology for numerous technology and socio-economic applications, a cornerstone of the modern civilisation, a public goods, and an essential component of a national infrastructure. GNSS resilience may be accomplished only with complete understanding of the causes of GNSS positioning performance disruptions and degradations, presented in a form of applications- and scenarios-related models. Here the application of change-point detection methods is proposed and demonstrated in a selected scenario of a fast-developing ionospheric storm’s impact on GNSS positioning performance, as a novel contribution to forecasting GNSS positioning performance model development and GNSS utilisation risk mitigation.

The project of subsea exploration is a long lasting and complex process. In most of the cases the underwater operations are connected with hydrographic and construction surveys that is equivalent of geodetic survey on shore. In the industry the need of constant monitoring of underwater activity such as tracking of autonomous robots and elements of infrastructures exist. It is possible by means of underwater acoustic positioning systems. The paper presents modern underwater positioning methods widely used in offshore mining sector in the aspect of system principles, measured navigation parameters and their achievable accuracy. The underwater LBL (Long Baseline) acoustic spoolpiece (segment of pipe joining the manifold and well) metrology was described and the necessary steps to have LBL system ready for logging session such as calibration of an array of transponders (baseline calibration) and finding grid coordinates of transponders in array (box in calibration). In the summary the present research directions in the field of underwater positioning were appointed.
W artykule dokonano syntetycznej prezentacji technik pozycjonowania podwodnego obecnie stosowanych w górnictwie morskim w aspekcie zasady działania, metody wyznaczania parametru nawigacyjnego oraz uzyskiwanych dokładności. Przedstawiono przebieg wykonania metrologii podwodnej polegającej na pomiarach przeprowadzonych techniką pozycjonowania akustycznego LBL (Long Baseline).

Many radio-navigation systems dating from the seventies and eighties of the last century were replaced by a single Global Positioning System (GPS) a dozen or so years ago. However, for several years the opinion that the GPS monopoly is becoming dangerous has been expressed increasingly often in navigational literature. Even when supplemented with other systems from this group, such as Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS), it cannot be treated as the source of reliable and universally accessible navigational information. This results from the similar sensibility of all GNSS systems to the same disturbances as a consequence of using a similar band of radiofrequencies and a similarly low powered signal. There is a growing recognition in the maritime world that GNSS will not provide the resilience required because of these common vulnerabilities. The World Wide Radio Navigation System should be seen as a combination of systems, which can cooperate and work effectively even when GNSS does not work. Lately different authors commonly point-out the potential advantages of a modified Loran (e-Loran), however it still remains only a potential option – particularly in the southern hemisphere, where this system has never existed. Meanwhile as the general threat of the disturbance of GNSS systems increases, the matter of initiating alternative possibilities becomes more urgent. A proposal which combines lower financial outlays with adjustments to the existing techniques and the law in force is desirable. In this context radar seems to be the attractive option, however for utilization as an alternative to GNSS it should reach considerably higher technical performances. In the paper the general limitations in the use of existing radar as a means of ships’ positioning are presented, and information published about the investigation into the methods for overcoming these limitations is discussed. The accessible information appears to prove that a greater accuracy of position can be achieved with modified radar in the future, especially if the suitable navigational infrastructure is present on shore. However, the level of accuracy of this method does not seem to compare favorably with GNSS.

An attempt to determine the impact of developing polynomial on the accuracy of setting down a ship's position coordinates based on measurements of two bearings has been ventured in this paper. A navigation structure consisting of two aids has been analysed. A ship maneuvering within a given area was setting down her position in respect to them. As a result of this, numeral accuracy indexes were calculated. They gave principles for conclusions regarding the impact of the distance between the aids of navigation on the accuracy of setting down the position’s coordinates.
